[RIVALS] The Heartmakers (rookie)
Legends tell of a province, a small, inconsequetial fief, utterly mundane save for the fact that it is ruled by machines and spectres. They say the province belongs to the ghosts of two spellcrafters, who, in life were masters of creating living machines.
The first ghost's name is Heorte Prath, a dwarven wizard. When he was at school, he met an elf cleric called Oray Tano. They soon became friends, and that freindship lasted for a long time. Not too long after he met Oray, the two friends got into a dispute on how, if it was possible, to create a being of magic with the capasity to feel. In other words, how do you create a Construct with a heart?
Heorte claimed that the only way to do such a thing is through advanced arcane magic, where Oray was convinced that only the power of the Gods could give something a heart. Tired of disputing and fighting about it, the pair decided that the best way to resolve the issue is to go out and make the Constructs themselves. This healthy competition soon turned into all-out rivalry, each convinced that they were the only ones who could make a feeling machine.
Time passed, and soon the pair ran out of money. Eventually, they got their hands on a small province, and used all of the funds from the land to aid their research. They programmed a machine to take care of their affairs, then holed themselves in their tower, crafting. Eventually, they died of old age, but their ghosts still live in the tower, each convinced that only they can make the machine with a heart.
