Anybody up for a simple 1st level adventure? (3.5)
I'm currently adapting a big adventure I ran for my group last year into 3.5 from my homebrew system. They said it was the best adventure they've ever played in, and felt like a module. I'm fixing some things that didn't work too well in my opinion, adjusting the dungeon's map, and filling in some holes, and it's still a WIP.
Well, I'm itching to DM something *now*, something simple and light on roleplay, where I'll mostly be making it up as I go. It will be set in a normal D&D world. You will start in a town and will be doing a local dungeon, so it's nothing you haven't seen before. The area will be similar to the heartlands in Faerun. I'll be using MM & maybe MM3 monsters, and homebrew if I feel the need.
Big 16:SpoilerOr whatever this smaller version is called
System: 3.5
Player Count: 7 or less
Style of Play: Regular? Light on roleplay, but not exactly Kick in the Door.
Allowed Content: No Incarnum, no RotD, no homebrew, no dragonfire adepts. Psionics and ToB are okay, but take it easy on psionics (there won't be any psionic items, and it will be a psionic/magic transparency world). I'm lactose intolerant, btw. Most other published 3.5 WOTC material should be okay. Ask if you're not sure.
Character Creation:
- Backstory: None. Make some if you want, but I don't care.
- Experience: Zero. You've never done anything noteworthy or dangerous.
- Wealth: Roll for starting gold.
- Ability Scores: 4d6b3 six times, reroll if your score mods total at +2 or less.
- Hitpoints/Health: Max at first, rolled thereafter.
- Alignment: Any. This means there could be internal conflict, possibly lethal, and some people might backstab the party. You'll probably need the whole party to survive, but watch your back. We're here to have fun, and this game won't be too involved, so know this coming into the game. If you can't handle this, don't play.Joining a group of dangerous people you don't know is generally inadvisable in real-life.
Note: Don't put your alignment on your sheet, PM it to me. - Posting Rate: Preferably once per day, but if I haven't responded to your last post, you're not obligated to post. I might not post every single day, and I'll lend you the same privilege, but try not to hold up the group.
Other Notes: We will be using the following races:SpoilerHumans: as PHB
Elves
+2 Dex, -2 Con
speed 35ft. with no heavier than light load
+2 vs. ench, immune to magic sleep
trance for 4 hours, -2 penalty to listen checks when trancing.
auto proficient with short bow, long bow, rapier, and longsword
+2 caster level to overcome spell resistance
+2 spellcraft
+2 craft (bowyer/fletcher) and craft (woodworking)
low light vision
detect secret doors
+2 listen, search, and spot
an elf's target has 20% less concealment, and elves reduce range-increment penalties by 2
Adult at 25, Middle-aged at 75, Old at 125, Venerable at 175 (+6d10)
Half-Elves
elven blood
+2 vs. magic sleep effects, otherwise +1 vs. enchantments
sleep for 6 hours, -5 listen penalty when sleeping.
lesser low light vision (1.5x)
+2 gather info and persuasion
+1 listen, spot, and search
+1 caster level to overcome spell resistance
+1 spellcraft
+1 craft (bowyer/fletcher) and craft (woodworking)
a half-elf's target has 10% less concealment, and half-elves reduce range-increment penalties by 1
Inspiration (Ex):SpoilerHalf-Elves gain a single Inspiration Point, useable as if they possessed the Cunning Insight and the Cunning Knowledge class features as a Factotum (Dungeonscape) of 1/4 their HD. With Cunning Insight, they use 1/4 their HD or their Int mod, whichever is higher (minimum +1).
A Half-Elf cannot make use of feats, PrCs, etc that require Inspiration Points, Cunning Insight or Cunning Knowledge.
If the half-elf is a factotum, this point is added to their pool.
Adult at 20, Middle-aged at 55, Old at 90, Venerable at 125 (+3d20)
Dwarves
+2 Con, -2 Dex
base speed 20ft.
armored ease
Darkvision 60ft.
stone cunning
weapon familiarity (maul is simple if two handed, martial if one – warhammers are simple/can choose picks instead)
stability
+2 vs. poison
+2 vs. magic
+1 attack vs. goblinoids
+2 damage vs. orcs
+4 dodge bonus to ac vs. giants
+2 appraise and craft with stone and metal
Adult at 20, Middle-aged at 55, Old at 90, Venerable at 125 (+3d20)
Gnomes
+2 Cha, -2 Wis
small (+2 hide and move silently instead of +4 hide)
base speed 20ft.
lesser low light vision (x1.5)
treat light repeating crossbows as simple weapons, heavy repeating crossbows and calculi as martial
a gnome who merely passes within 5ft. of an illusion is entitled to a save to disbelieve the illusion as if studying it
+1 attack rolls vs. goblinoids & reptilian humanoids
+4 dodge bonus to AC vs. giants
+1 bonus to thrown attacks
+2 will saves vs. illusion
+1 dc to any illusion spells cast (or caster level, caster’s choice)
+2 craft alchemy
+1 to any two craft or knowledge skills (except alchemy)
+2 decipher script
+1 disable device and open lock
Gains a single first level illusion spell that can be used Cha mod/day as a spell-like ability with a CL equal to character level.
Half orcs
+2 Str, -2 Int
+3 when charging (instead of +2)
+2 Intimidate
+2 survival
+2 saves vs. disease
Four additional skill points at 1st level, one more point per level
auto proficient handaxe, throwing axe, battleaxe, war axe when two handed, greataxe, and javelins
dark vision 60ft.
orc blood
These changes are to encourage people to play something besides humans, but feel free to make a human.
-Small creatures have +2 hide and move silently, rather than +4 hide.
-Initiative is d12, not d20.
-Hit AC for half-damage.
-Don't put ranks in appraise or professions (you'll never use them)
-We're using the giant's diplomacy fix, and we're calling it "persuasion"
Change diplomacy to persuasion on your sheets or else.
-5 ranks in Knowledge (Nobility & Royalty) grants a +2 synergy bonus to sense motive, notdiplomacypersuasion, and 5 ranks in sense motive grants a +2 synergy bonus to bluff, notdiplomacypersuasion.
-Fractional Bab and saves, and no multiclassing penalties (if we get that far).
-Combat maneuvers (bull rush, grapple, trip, etc.) against flat footed opponents gain +2.
-Strewn bodies are usually considered rubble, difficult terrain, or obstacles.
-You can take up to two flaws at first level, and two traits - from UA.
-Poison isn't evil.
-Sometimes certain actions don't require the whole action, for instance: bending down to pick up an item - this might cost two squares of movement instead of an entire move action.
-Just for my personal tastes, we're using the silver standard, which means platinum is now gold, gold is now silver, silver is now copper, and copper is now copper bits. Just roll your gold and buy your stuff as normal, then downgrade whatever coins you have left.
Don't get attached to your characters, the dice and even other players might not be kind to you, and I don't fudge dice in your favor.
However, this means that if you survive/are successful, you earned it. Good players will be granted an assured spot in my big adventure, whenever I get done with it, if they want it.
If you have any questions, ask. I don't think I forgot anything.
Recruitment should be less than a week.

I'll also do three rolls to be on the safe side. I'm thinking an Elf warlock, if that class is allowed.

Warlock is allowed.
For those of you rolling 5's but still having high enough stats, know that I allow Keen Intellect and Force of Personality (but not Steadfast Determination).

Re: Anybody up for a simple 1st level adventure? (3.5)
I just realized I made a slight mistake in my big 16; half-orcs get the same bonus to skills as humans, not just +1 per level (so 4 at 1st level, not 1). I hope that didn't keep anybody from making one.
I almost didn't allow ToM in my big 16, but then I changed my mind. I know I'm okay with Binders, but I don't really know what else that book has. What is RoD? I banned Races of the Dragon, which I thought was RotD... Ican't findbarely looked for that old sticky that has all the abbreviations.
Tell me which feat from BoVD, and we'll see.

Re: Anybody up for a simple 1st level adventure? (3.5)
You can only play the races I listed, and no way in baator am I allowing a truenamer. Looking at Mortalbane, I don't know what else you'd apply it to, but I think I'm gonna say no to that as well, because +2d6 is too much at 1st level. No powerful charge, while I'm at it.
I actually am sorry, but I have never heard anything of Truenamer that wasn't a joke.

Re: Anybody up for a simple 1st level adventure? (3.5)
Uhm... they're a decent class if you know how to play one.
Whatever, I'll be a half-orc barbarian ubercharger instead. I can grab a lance and should be able to have Spirited Charge at first level, Headlong Rush at fourth, and think about picking up PsW levels and taking Psionic Lion's Charge if we actually get anywhere.

I LOVE THESE RACE FIXES. Very flavorful, functional, and non-broken.

That'll do, pig. That'll do. Someone already made the Elf Scout (niiiiice, with the fix!) ... I'm thinking.
Erm - could I make a Targeteer - Dragon #310? Not sure if that suits your tastes, but its my favorite Fighter ACF and makes for a lovely archer. I'd use it to grab Point Blank Shot (1st), Precise Shot (flaw), Rapid Shot (flaw), and Vital Aim (Targeteer 1 - Dex to weapon damage at range). Classic elven archer, and would also have Hide and MS as skills (so he could play backup for the Rogue).
Alternatively, Gnomish Warlock. Didn't wanna double up on Warlock OR Scout (already staked out by others!), but it was my favorite use of the lovely gnome you've offered.
I'll think of a few others, just in case. Anything you'd like to see or that might be fun, holler!Last edited by JanusJones; 2014-02-15 at 01:45 AM.

Re: Anybody up for a simple 1st level adventure? (3.5)
Well hey, that's what I was aiming for!
I've actually posted them several times on these forums, and they've generally been negatively received. I'm proud of them, and I'm glad they're finally getting some fans. The gnomes were actually the hardest to come up with.
Targeteer is okay. If you go with that, there is a feat I allow that you might be interested in: Skilled:As an archer, you might want that for spot. Don't feel obligated to take it just because I mentioned it.SpoilerYou can only take this feat at 1st level. It gives you any skill as a class skill, no matter what classes you take, and you gain a one-time untyped +2 bonus on checks made with that skill.
As for warlock or scout, just because someone posts something doesn't mean they're going to get a spot. Post whatever you want to play, and you never know, I might choose a group that has two warlocks or two scouts.
I see gnomes as artificers, bards, beguilers, rogues, and sorcerers (focused in illusion), as well as rogue/beguilers and rogue/illusionists heading into arcane trickster, and possibly beguilers or sorcerers going into prestige bard. To a lesser extent, cloistered clerics (which I call priests) who have the Trickery and Sun domains (who are good at turning undead, with their high charismas).
EDIT: Which reminds me: I'm not picky when it comes to cleric domains. I'm using the core pantheon, plus a few other gods (like trithereon, who should have been core), but I'll allow domain combinations that can reasonably be attributed to whichever deity. Trickery and Sun, for instance, I'd allow for Garl Glittergold.
