    Default Generica-Shin Megami Tensei version-P.E.A.C.H.

    Generica is a simple set of rules that can be adopted for almost any setting, especially suitable for video games. Here is the basics:

    Six stats.

    They are similar to D&D ability score, but some of them have a slightly different purpose.

    Strength-It affects your Physical Attack(PA) and slightly boosts the damage of physical abilities.
    Vitality-It affects your Physical Evade(PE) and Physical Defense(PD).
    Agility-It affects Initiative and evade.
    Intelligence-It affects your Magical Attack(MA) and slightly boosts the damage of magical abilities.
    Wisdom-It affects your Magical Evade(ME), Magical Defense(MD) and support magic(healing and buffs).
    Willpower-It affects your Status Evade(SE) Status Attack(SA) and Status Defense(SD). Unlike D&D Charisma that is useless for most classes Willpower is very useful for all classes, because it helps you resist negative effects.

    Every character starts with 20 points to distribute among this 6 stats. Maximum is 7 and minimum is 1. At level 3, and every two levels after that you add +1 to two stats of your choice.
    To gain a level your character needs to gain 10 EXP. Encounters usually provide somewhere between 2 and 5 EXP. DM can give EXP for RP actions, if it is fitting.

    Secondary stats:

    Initiative-3d6+Agility
    Physical Attack(PA)-3d6+Strength+1/2 level
    Magical Attack(MA)-3d6+Intelligence+1/2 level
    Status Attack(SA)-3d6+Willpower+1/2 level
    Physical Evade(PE)-8+Agility+Vitality+1/2 level
    Magical Evade(ME)-8+Agility+Wisdom+1/2 level
    Status Evade(SE)-8+Agility+Willpower+1/2 level
    Physical Defense(PD)-Vitality+1/2 level
    Magical Defense(MD)-Wisdom+1/2 level
    Status Defense(SD)-Willpower+1/2 level
    HP-10+level*3+Vitality*2+Strength
    MP-5+level*2+Intelligence/2+Wisdom/2+Willpower/2

    Every character regains MP every turn equal to (Intelligence+Wisdom+Willpower)/5.

    Combat mechanics

    Combat mechanics are simple. At the start of encounter every participant rolls Initiative. Turn order is simply from the highest initiative to the lowest. Once it is your turn you can perform one standard action and one minor action. Standard action is usually spent on using one of the skills that your character possess. When you use a skill you roll the appropriate attack value. If your roll is equal or higher than the target’s appropriate evade you are successful, and the effect is carried out. Some attacks have a chance to inflict a negative effect in addition to the damage they deal. Add the abilities effect modifier to the attack roll and compare it to the target’s status defense to see if the effect is applied. As long as the attack hits it deals damage, even if the effect is not applied.

    Rows, intercepting and countering

    When combat starts characters are divided in two rows-front and back. When a character is attacked an ally can use his minor action to intercept the attack. This effectively switches the target, and the ally who is intercepting takes the attack. Front row characters can intercept any attack, but back row characters can only intercept attacks aimed at an ally in the back row.
    When a character intercepts a attack he can use his next standard action to perform a counter attack. The counter attack must target the intercepted enemy and must be a single target attack. A counter attack has a +2 accuracy bonus.


    Now we can get to down to the Shin Megami Tensei goodness.

    Classes


    Avatar Tuner-Hailing from Digital Devil Saga, Avatar Tuners have the ability to morph into a demonic form, thanks to the Atma virus. They learn new abilities by equipping different Mantras and gaining enough Atma Points to unlock the power of currently equipped Mantra. They are different from the others because they can learn all the skills in the game, with enough time. However, they are limited to few active skill. Changing the active skills takes a short rest, so it can not be done when in combat.
    Persona User-Hailing from the Persona series, the Persona Users have the ability to summon the manifestation of their inner-self to protect them. Every Persona User starts with two Personas(or Personae, whatever you prefer). Only one persona can be active at any time, but you can switch your active Persona as a minor action. Your level determines how many Personas you can carry with you. Your current Persona rooster can be changed at the Velvet Room.
    Demon Tamer-This version of Demon Tamer is inspired by Devil Survivor series. Demon Tamers don’t engage their enemies themselves. Instead, they use demons to attack their enemies and support their allies. They can have maximum of two demons with them. As a minor action they can summon two demons, dismiss two demons or exchange one demon on the field for one stored demon.

    Each class has it’s own mechanics, but they all use the same battle system.
    Avatar Tuners are the simplest, most of their flexibility comes into play before the actual combat starts. Their strengths, weaknesses and stats are fixed. They begin the game with two Tier 1 Mantras mastered, and a third one equipped. They can equip three skills from the start. At level 2, and every two levels afterwards Avatar Tuner unlocks another skill slot.
    Persona Users have their own stats. However, this are averaged out with the currently equipped Persona. They usually don’t have any strengths or weaknesses, so those are usually based on the active Persona. Their skill set is completely based on the Persona. Every Persona starts at Rank 1 with one or two skills. After every encounter every persona that was involved in the conflict receives EXP that allows the Persona to Rank Up. Maximum rank for a Persona is 8. Rank determines stats and skills of a Persona. Each Persona user starts with two awakened Personas.
    Demon Tamers gain strengths and weaknesses from their demons. They gain their skill set by combining the skills of their demons. Demons also provide bonuses and penalties to Tamer’s stats. Every Demon Tamer starts with 3 Tier 1 Demons of their choice.
    Personas do not manifest physically and demons are consider to be one with their summoner. As such they share a space, move together and do not grant additional actions per turn.
    When a creature is affected by an effect that affects his actions(charm, stone…), his initiative is reduced to zero. If the effect is removed the initiative is returned to normal. If the effects is not removed the creature takes it’s turn at the end of the round.

    Sub-Persona User
    Inspire by the upcoming Persona Q, this class serves as a variation of the standard Wild Card. This group of Persona Users have a permanent Persona of their own (that can evolve if the DM allows it), but they are still able to use the standard set of Wild Card's Personas. Their primary persona can learn up to four skills, but they start with no skills of their own. Once their persona achieves level 3 they can start learning their personal skills. Total tier of primary persona's skills can not exceed persona's level-2. Generally, primary persona can learn any skill, but DM always has the last word and can restrict some skill combinations.
    This primary persona comes with a price, naturally. This character's sub-personas can only learn up to 4 skills. This essentially means that they sacrifice some versatility for reliability. In the end, the power level should be identical. At least in theory.

    Social links
    What would a Persona game be without Social Links? On a second thought, don't answer that, it can only lead to old Vs new persona debate, and those are never productive. Anyway, optional rule for social links gives you a small boost for every rank you attain in a social link, and this boost applies only to personas of that particular Arcana. This bonuses should follow the Arcana's specialists. MD and healing boost for Priestess Arcana? Yes, please. Physical attack boost? Well, that's just proves you never played any persona game.

    Tarot cards
    Sure, the DM is free to hand out or withhold Personas as he sees fit, but tarot cards are a nice way to limit what personas your characters can use, but still maintain the illusion that they have any choice. Essentially, to summon a particular Persona you need enough cards that correspond to that Persona's Arcana. Allowing the players to trade this cards and giving them a few blank cards will give them some choice. To avoid large numbers I personally go for 1/3/5/7/10, to make it simple.

    Material cards
    This are listed as optional, but I advise every DM to let their players use them. This cards allow you to add an additional skill when awakening a persona. It is a great way to add skills like Void and Break, that might be very hard/impossible to find. Giving your players a small list of skills to pick from is encouraged.

    Tag ring modifications
    Every Avatar Tuner has a Tag Ring, that is how they access the Karma Terminal. This tag rings can support various modification. Every tag ring starts with two modification slots, and DM can choose to increase this, if he wants to give his players some extra power. Any modification must first be found and installed in order to be activated. As with skills, active modifications can be changed at any time outside of combat.

    This are items that a DM can give out as a quest reward. They are bound to a particular Tuner, and can not be traded.

    Not exactly. The battle system is my own, but it was made to emulate SMT as best as possible.

    The game is mostly finished, I just need to finish tier 5 personas and most of the demons, but the system is playable. I could use a few more optional rules, if you have some ideas, especially for Demon Tamers. Persona Users have social links/tarot cards and Avatar Tuners have tag ring modifications, but Demon Tamers don't really have anything special.

    Okay, a bit late, BUT...

    When I said a "direct port", I meant the Personas/Demons/Matras. If they're the same as the ones from the games, which seems to be the case, I can run through conversions lickety-split. If there's room for more, even, then my psychopathic inner workings will gladly provide some for you...I have a few ideas, ya' see.

    As for Demon Tamers, I'm not sure, since my main exposure with SMT is Persona (didn't even know where Avatar Tuners cae from ). From what I saw, though, they're basically mini-Personas, the main thing being each person has multiple fighting at once. Maybe an option for keeping each Demon separate? I'm not sure how it'd work out, but two actions at the cost of two, smaller hit point pools might be something.

    Personas and Demons are taken from the game, but their stats and skills are not the same. They mostly follow what their Arcana/Race specializes in.
    There is always room for more. I allowed my players to create their own personas for minor arcana.

    As for Demon Tamers, I'm not sure, since my main exposure with SMT is Persona (didn't even know where Avatar Tuners cae from ). From what I saw, though, they're basically mini-Personas, the main thing being each person has multiple fighting at once. Maybe an option for keeping each Demon separate? I'm not sure how it'd work out, but two actions at the cost of two, smaller hit point pools might be something.
    Actually, I didn't want to do that in order to keep the balance. Crunch wise, every class represents one character. Switching personas/demons changes your stats and available options, but it doesn't give you extra actions.
    I was thinking of adding something similar to Fate system from Devil Survivor 2.
    You should definitely play Digital Devil Saga, it's my favorite part of the entire SMT franchise.

    Not really. There are a few more optional rules I might add, but the base system is finished. It doesn't have rules for adventuring/social encounter, it was intended to emulate video games so that is usually done through RP.
    I do plan other conversions (Final Fantasy and Pokemon are on top of my list at the moment), but that's just a collection of notes right now, nothing solid.

    With respect, I don't know how good an idea Social Links are. It seems best for solo games, and hard to adjudicate for games with several characters. I suppose you could have each player indicate which tarot is most appropriate for their character. It's safe to assume that the players will Social Link with each other for power. Wait, roleplaying is actually a really good thing to incentivize.

    It is also goes great with PbP format, every social link is a different thread. It also rewards higher activity, beyond just posting in the main thread.
    In my playtesting game some of my players already have rank 3 social links, and since your personal arcana rank is based on the highest social link that quite a nice boost.

    If you are still interested in the system you can join my persona game. That one has been going for a year now, it's definitely stable enough. And I can always use a dedicated controller (or whatever else you want to play), the system supports specialization.

    I hope that some observations, comments and suggestions might be of use;

    Physical and Elemental Skills

    Physical attackers, in general, are much more likely to pick up additional Vitality as a secondary stat for health to spend, improving defense against other physical attacks. Add to this that Strength increases HP as well, and physical attackers are much better suited to taking physical hits since, even though they're spending health, they have a lot of it and high PD and PE.

    Elemental Attackers, meanwhile, don't have as much need to invest in HP, and thus their skillsets can afford to be more diverse. Instead of usually going Str + Vit to be an effective striker, they may go Int + *anything,* if probably Wis or Will to get more SP. In the former case they'll be a good off-healer, buffer, and have high MD. In the latter case, they can inflict ailments and debuff effectively, while having higher SE. It's also entirely possible to see them take Int + Vit primarily, and have high PD while being able to target the physical attackers that they're blocking, to get both magic damage that bypasses the physical attacker's more-likely stat of PD, and to get a counterstrike bonus.

    Generally speaking, physical attackers are better at defending against physical and attacking non-physical users, while elemental attackers are better at trying to target weaknesses, and can viably afford to use any main defensive stat. Both have good diversity, though in different ways - PA gives more options within a limited damage type, while MA gives fewer options, but a more broad array of damage types. PA users can customize more in terms of fighting style, while MA users can afford to customize more in terms of overall character build and attribute focus. It is my opinion that the two are well balanced in regard to each other.

    Naturally they all have thier own place and uses, but there's a pretty clear problem here. That problem is that Patra is the single most common ailment cure, found on 10 base personae (Posmudi is on 4, by contrast, and there are 3 Petradis, 1 Paraldi, and none of any of the others), and is the only thing that cures 3 different conditions AND it has a multi-target version. Amrita is excusable since it's fair to *every* status condition and is tier 4, but having something so easy to access cure 3 different things when everything else is cured by only its own specific thing or Amrita is just plain wrong. Basically if anyone decides to have one status cure that isn't Amrita, then Patra or Me Patra is going to be it since they offer the most options.

    I'd say either make separate cures for the three status conditions in question, or change Patra to be all mental status, and replace the individual condition cures with something that cures all physical status. If you want a T3 multi-target, make it reduce the duration of all active status conditions by 1 instead of curing a few of them and thereby making the ones in question unjustly weakened. The downsides to Sleep, Panic and Charm are already built into the skills without making them absurdly easy to cure! Sleep makes it hard to strategize multi-target skills, panic is unreliable, and charm only lasts 2 turns.

    As it is right now, the three skills in question may as well not be used at all until the enemy healer is incapacitated, because every healer is guaranteed to have Patra - this is not an equal trade between the attacker and defender (a turn for a turn) because the attacker has to actually roll to hit, and invest stats into being able to use the skills successfully, while just anyone can go use the "always automatically works" cure, and as I've said if something can be cured by Patra, it's all but guaranteed that it will be on the next turn, barring an ally who likes to stun the healer with Skull Cracker.


    Status and Bosses
    It is understandable that allowing bosses to be affected by ailments in the normal way may be undesirable since it can effectively shut them down and make for a far too easy and anticlimatic battle. As such, I'd suggest that in cases where appropriate, ailments applied to bosses have modified effects.

    That's pretty much what I was going for. I'm glad it worked.
    You did forget the Fragile Speedster build, Str+Agi. A very viable build that focuses on survival (through evasion) and physical offense.

    You really don't like Patra.
    I was working with what I had from the old system, and I never thought it would be a big problem. But, since you already complained about this (and you thought I wasn't listening ) I will make an adjustment to status curing skills. Each ailment will have an equivalent single target cure skill, and they will all be tier 1. Patra and Me Patra will be expanded to include Mute and possibly have a slightly higher SP cost. Nervundi and Energy Shower will be added as physical counterpart to Patra and Me Patra.
    Will that make you happy?

    I would actually nerf Poison first, because 30% health is a lot if enemy has triple health.
    This is a nice list, but bosses will already have higher stats and that includes SE, so they are less likely to be affected by ailments. Nerfing ailments further will make all controllers shift to (unmissable) debuffs.

    Here's hoping some of these observations and suggestions are useful!

    You really don't like Patra.
    I was working with what I had from the old system, and I never thought it would be a big problem. But, since you already complained about this (and you thought I wasn't listening ) I will make an adjustment to status curing skills. Each ailment will have an equivalent single target cure skill, and they will all be tier 1. Patra and Me Patra will be expanded to include Mute and possibly have a slightly higher SP cost. Nervundi and Energy Shower will be added as physical counterpart to Patra and Me Patra.

    You are correct; I REALLY don't. Truth be told, I do think that Amrita is quite sufficient for multi-target cure, since anything less than T4 that can cure more than one status type on multiple targets is very painful, but the main point is that doing what you say would make things fair between the ailments in terms of how easy or hard they are to remove, instead of nerfing some but not others.

    I would actually nerf Poison first, because 30% health is a lot if enemy has triple health.
    This is a nice list, but bosses will already have higher stats and that includes SE, so they are less likely to be affected by ailments. Nerfing ailments further will make all controllers shift to (unmissable) debuffs.
    Granted, there's the poison thing. The reason I included the list was for the sake of the rare low-SE-boss (see: Tower in current dungeon thread, with an SE verified at 18 or 19) that is vital to the encounter so much that since there isn't another option (like this list), it's granted immunity.

    And now I want to make a post about all the possible Primary+Secondary combinations, just for fun.
    That's actually a strange build. Huge SE makes it great for intercepting those nasty ailments, but it is to fragile to be in the front. It is still great for protecting fragile (read: back row casters) allies from that nasty Mute attack.

    Well, 14SP cost makes it second only to Samrecarm's 18. Even Mediarahan costs less. It's not really something you can use every round. Although I do think all skills need a slight cost bump, but I will have to do at least one more set of dungeons to verify that.

    One thing I've noticed while I've been making my dungeon: there's a ton of Status Break skills, but not very many personas which learn them (all I could find was Lilim, but I didn't check everything). I'm wondering how they're meant to fit into the system as is. Can you Charm Break a boss that should be immune to charm and let it run loose on the enemy for example, and if so, is this intended functioning?

    They are meant to remove Walls and negate innate resistance. Material cards and the new NPC social link bonuses I am implementing will make those less used (or unused) skills available. You can also make alternate personas, that have the skills you need.
