The skies are as dreary as they were yesterday, if not drearier. Fortunately, those who do sleep slept without any further undead incursions. You all pack up your gear: both old, and new, and then head out through the northern entrance, where the Vassal, Lady Sorra and Sir Cynric await you. Behind them, an escort of knights are forming, readying to take the people to safety.

Oren stares at the gray sky sadly,I wish for the heat of the sun's rays again. From what I've heard of the Mournlands, the sun rarely reaches it. Nothing to do about it I guess. sigh Oren begins to busy himself by checking his new gun over. He had donated his old musket to the keep so they could learn more of gun smithing. Though with Rurik staying at the keep, Oren's sure they are in good hands.

"Sir Cynric tells me he'll be travelling with you through the Mournlands," Grave said.
Cynric smiled. "I plan on seeing this thing through to the end," Cynric bowed. "I am at your service, Mournland Watch."
Sir Grave turned to the caravan behind him. "A good portion of my knights shall escort the people to the safety of New Cyre, should the worst befall us. Though judging by how you handled the undead scourge, I feel you may yet handle what lies ahead."

He looks at the rest of the group. "And yer associates. Ye'll look after me friend, yes?"
He hand Oren a bag of... something. "Th' repellant, just as requested. Anyway, once this here escort takes me to th' city, I'll be off to Sharn. 'Till we meet again, lad!"

Once again, there were purple cirkles under Malvin's eyes that morning. He stiffled a yawn. He seemed unduly tired, just like the day before - perhaps he was unaccustomed to rising early.

There's a new satchel hooked to his belt under the coat. It sat open, and several rolls of parchment peeked out of the top, ready to be drawn in a hurry.

He was not in the mood for conversation, but regarded the gathering caravan impassively. I wonder if they'll be waylaid by the dead on their way. From what I saw of the knights' skill, it will not bode well for them if they are. Which of those faces will we see next on grey shapes coming shambling out of the mist?
He shook his head. It's no use to wonder. They will either die or they won't.

Oren takes the repellant from the dwarf. "Thank you, Rurik." as the gunslinger places the bag in his pack, the party may notice that Oren has a new musket. This one seems less beaten and worn then the last one. There is something else that seems different about it...

Wotan observes the gathering from atop the wall where he perched. He saw Spiker as she emerged from the woods. He nodded.
"Ah, I see you've made... modifications," said Cynric, eyeing the new rifle "Quite brilliant in design. Though it was quite deadly enough to begin with..."
Cynric greets Malvin with a nod, but his face changes to concern. "Malvin, are you all right?"

Malvin glanced at the weapon in Oren's hands. "I am fine. It seems I took the late night reading too far." Which was true, if not all of the truth.
He took a closer look at the improved rifle design. It had a somewhat bulky contraption where the base of the tube met the handle, one he couldn't immediately discern the purpose of. Perhaps it would store more of that powder of Oren's, create a bigger forward thrust with the pellets.

It was an interesting concept. "What is the advantage of that particular model, if I might ask?"

"You know those crossbows that have a clip to make them shoot faster? This is similar to that. I can shoot 5 shots before I have to put in a new clip." To demonstrate this, Oren pulls out the clip, showing paper cartridges. "These have a musket ball and a dose of gunpowder each. I can load them in and fire them off like normal."

"Fascinating. I'm impressed that you can still contain the explosions with the added moving parts." He frowned. "It is explosions that propels the balls, no?" Despite the conversation, Malvin couldn't help but throw a furtive glance at Cynric. Logically, he was aware the man was at good health, but the need to make sure he was alive was nagging at him.

Yes, they are still fired by explosions. I'm surprised you noticed that, most people think it's magic. Although, while we were here, I took the opportunity to give it a bit more of a magical boost.

Oren nods, "Indeed, but not in this case. Some people shoot lightning bolts, I shoot metal balls of steel, and now silver." As he says this last bit, he draws out what seems to be a clip of clips. "Since I heard of each devil's innate resistance to more orthodox metals, my dwarven friend here offer to make some silver alloy shots."

That, and a good old fashion blade. Oren reaches to a handle sticking above his right shoulder and draws out a large hunting knife that seems to be more of a sword than a knife.

Oren face-palms the moment the words leave his mouth.
I've been brain baked... I am really sorry about that, I know that receiving your powers must have been painful. It's just that while in New Cyre, I came across this group that used rapiers to fight like it was a sport. They claimed that the rapiers weren't weapons because they had never drawn blood. That kind of thing just drives me crazy. A weapon is a weapon, no matter how you use it.

This takes place during the exchanges between your characters.

A strange, green skinned humanoid wearing little more than tattered clothes approaches the Vassal, bowing. "I have received word from both Arlana and Captain Covakel. They are on their way."
Grave nods to this new stranger. "Still no word from Om or Ciran?"
"No, but that doesn't surprise me," he replied.
    "I see. Thank you, Ruz."
The stranger known as Ruz bowed once more. "I am at your service, friend."
As Spiker storms off, Grave allowed the awkward silence for only an instant. "Well, now. It seems you have your work cut out for you, Halberd."
Grave now addresses those in the group who are present. "Horses will not serve you well in the Mournlands, as beasts fear to enter the strange veil that has set there. I imagine you, Briar, will have to soothe your birds as you venture there."
Grave falls silent for a moment, looking to the northeast. You all notice the clouds darken the further you look towards the horizon. "I have sent word to my former companions to rally here, to buy the people time should an even more powerful wave of undead set it's sights upon the Keep. But you must not deter from your mission, no matter what befalls us. All depends on your success."
The Vassal looks at each of you for a good long moment, before finally saying. "I wish you all... the best of luck. And if you accept... I will pray for you."

During all this, Halberd has been silent, absorbed in his own thoughts. He still has difficulty grasping the full scale of the situation revealed to him, though it does not show. Don't worry, Endbringer. We'll fix whatever this is. Maybe we'll get lucky and find some way to free you from the sword.

Finally uncrossing his arms, Halberd turns to the others and says, "I realized last night, while pounding swords, that I didn't introduce myself to you all. I'm Halberd, and I'm going to be your new... squadmate."

No leader with this bunch? Gods, this is going to be like pulling snipers out of foxholes.

Walking over to Lady Sorra, he asks, "How's the morale of the men?"

No leader with this bunch? Gods, this is going to be like pulling snipers out of foxholes.

Walking over to Lady Sorra, he asks, "How's the morale of the men?"
"It holds. They were accepted into Gr...The Vassal's knighthood for precisely that reason. They will defend the people to the last man."
Sorra looks down, her eye's shift to Grave."...I sometimes wish my will were as strong as theirs."

In a surprising gesture, Halberd lays one of his armorclad hands on Sorra's shoulder. The sergeants always used to do that. Wonder why? Well, hope it works.

Looking her in the eye, he says, "You can't let the threat of loss keep you from moving forward. You have a job to do. He wouldn't send you unless he thought the men needed you, and he won't be satisfied unless you go. Let his god worry about him, not you."

He waves his other hand at the refugee column. "Do you see all of them? Families, farmers, merchants. These are not soldiers. You have to be strong for them. For them, for Sir Grave, and for yourself." He removes the hand from her shoulder gently. "We are all in this together, which means we all have to give everything we've got. Everything you've got. Don't be looking over your shoulder and thinking of what might be."

Taking on the stentorian voice of his former sergeants, Halberd states, "Tell me, soldier, have you got your head screwed on straight? Ready to show these civvies how a real warrior holds their head high?"

Lady Sorra listens intently to Halberds words. She took time to look at the people. She smiled.
"... I can see why my husband is so fond of you. You speak wisdom... And your words strengthen." She nods in respect. "You are, indeed, a good man. I will be strong."
