Default The Ultimate Order of the Stick Book Tournament THE FINALS!

    Greetings playgrounders, and welcome to
The Ultimate Order of the Stick Book Tournament!
    Round 14: The Finals!
Here, you can vote for your favorite of the first eight books in a double-elimination tournament. Each week I will post a new matchup. Vote in this thread, not by PM. You get one vote per person. If your post contains more than the name or abbreviation of the book's title, I ask that you bold your vote. Votes may take the form either of the book's title, the abbreviation, or the number.

    The Contestants
    Dungeon Crawling Fools
    No Cure for Paladin Blues
    War and XP
    Don't Split the Party
    Blood Runs in the Family
On the Origins of the PCs
    The Start of Darkness
    Snips, Snails and Dragon Tales

Although BRitF has not been released, I think that we have seen enough of it from the online strips to include it in the running.

Last match, Blood Runs in the Family crushed War and XP by wormholing in an extra army.

    Current Bracket Standings: clicky!

    The Final Match:
    Start of Darkness
vs. Blood Runs in the Family

The current match will end Saturday, July 26, after which the winner will be declared
    Grand Champion of Stick!

This decision is probably the hardest one to make, out of all the close match-ups in this tournament. These two books are on the top my list of OOTS books, and they both do excellent in many of the same areas. In the end, I think I will stick with my original choice of Blood Runs in the Family.

    Good luck to both contestants!

Voting for Blood Runs in the Family.

And wow, if Start of Darkness beats out all of the actual main books, I may have to find a copy. (Not in the US, can't order online unless I want to pay twice the price of the book to get it shipped even though I'm only a few kilometres from the US.)

Start of Darkness - While the overall writing and art style may have improved since the Giant wrote it, Start of Darkness is such a vital piece to Redcloak's character that I feel that it deserves the title of "Best Order of the Stick Book". It also helps people understand why Xykon acts the way he does (to some extent), and it... well, I can't go too deep into it without spoiling parts of the book. It is, by far, the best prequel, and I consider it a near mandatory read for any fan of the comic.

Ah yes, it comes down to SoD vs BritF, as I thought it might. I think I have to go for SoD, in spite of BritF being a damn fine book.

The first time this match came up, I think I voted for SoD, because it's all muscle, whereas BRitF has some body fat. That's still more or less true, but this time, I'm switching my vote to Blood Runs in the Family.

Why? I think that, when OotS is said and done, the relentless action that stretched from Belkar smacking into Malack all the way to the fight on the Mechane will stand out as a high point. The storytelling was just so self-assured, and the Giant gave us narrative payoff after payoff after payoff--of the Malack/Durkon relationship, and Belkar/Roy, and Nale/Tarquin, and Elan/Tarquin, and Elan/Scoundrel, and on and on and on. So much of OotS led up to these moments.

Plus, despite his thumb injury, the Giant found ways to make his art more appealing than ever before.

Finally, despite SoD being the team evil book, BritF has the best team evil moment. How was Xykon going to react to Tsukiko's murder? We had no idea, and the scene is still chilling. I think the Team Evil stuff in BritF works superbly well even without the considerable benefit of SoD. It deserves the nod.

Personally, I need to go with SoD. BRitF was interesting, but it seemed to me like comparatively little changed in that book; it was more like a stepping stone to more important events, like Hel's plan and the consequences of V's deal with the fiends. It set the scene for future events. That's not bad, but it doesn't make the book stand out to me.

I don't know how often you get across the Saint Lawrence River, but if you have a trip scheduled far enough ahead of time, you could just have the book shipped to you General Delivery at the post office in Ogdensburg or somewhere. Or check if Tim's Comic & Game in Potsdam carries it (and get them to order it if they don't).

I'm in Victoria, BC. The St. Lawrence River is on the other side of the country.

Don't have any plans for a trip to Seattle anytime soon, and $200 for a there-and-back ferry trip is even more expensive - by a lot - than having the book mailed here.

I think the location under your avatar may have mislead Dr. Gamera.

    BRiTF.
The scene with Redcloak/the Resistance/Tsukiko has the intensity and character-explanation that makes SoD great, but squashed into even higher awesomeness density.

Tarquin is still great fun to watch, whatever he turns out to be in the end; the pun-duel is one of my favorite strips.
Malack's perpetual imperturbability ("Hrm") and knowledge offset that nicely; it would have been nice to see him and Redcloak meet, as two scholars willing to do anything on behalf of their gods...

We get actual dinosaurs!. Belkar's character development gets moving; Durkon gets some in the wrong direction; V's genocide comes calling; Elan, Nale and Tarquin solve their family issues once and for all; Haley at least meets hers.

There's just so much story in BRiTF, much of it awesome - even if SoD has the best storytelling per-page, it can't come close to pulling together so much plot and so many characters, some dating right from DCF and NCftPB.

A tie?!? Yes, we have a tie, 7-7!. It looks like it's up to me to break it
Although, it looks like at least on person voted for BriF without having SoD, so this may have been a somewhat biased poll. Oh well, tiebreaker time:
The Official Grand Champion of the Order of the Stick Books is...

Thanks for running this fun tournament, 137ben.

And even though I voted for BritF this time around, I have to say that your tiebreaker was completely fair, considering:

    1. The "voting without reading both" factor that you mentioned, and
    2. The fact that SoD won *all* its matches up until now, including its first match against BritF.

A most impressive showing from the print-only book.
