Awesome! Classic non-dashing swordsman Elan. Doing something totally awesome and then screwing up.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
Great strip. Hinjo couldn't have said that he wasn't warned-and Elan should definitely stick to singing.

This was classic Elan. Brilliant.
9/10 as far as OOTS comics go, in my opinion.Eventually I'll return. Eventually.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
Agreed. Elan has to learn that a pre-battle speech is not meant to be true, just to be inspiring

Man, that was like every motivational army speech rolled into one. I was half-expecting to see "For Adun! For Aiur!" at the end.Last edited by Turcano; 2007-03-02 at 10:02 PM.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
Aiy-yi-yi. He was doing so well there. Then he shot himself in the foot. Poor Elan.
Let's see, I recognized Julius Caesar, Henry IV, George Patton, Dylan Thomas, and William Wallace. I had no idea Elan had so many levels in Channel (Historical Figure).
Good comic!

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
This one made me laugh out loud. Way to screw up the big dramatic moment, Elan. And bringing back the potions gag is just brilliant.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
I think the fact that his speech *almost* worked amazingly well just proves that Elan is awesome. The fact that he slipped up a little at the end (
) just proves that he's still Elan. <3

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
I think the best part is that it was already such a horrible mishmash -- but at least it was a horrible mishmash of things people pretty much wanted to hear -- and it got a rousing reception.
And then Elan had to overthink it out loud one too many times.
(Hah, did you expect to see a serious sentence containing "Elan" and "overthink" together.)
Besides, yes, it is an almost universal truth that pre-battle cries/speeches are usually much more rousing than sensical. ("You may take our lives but you'll never take our freedom" has got to be right up there -- sounds great, feels great, but on a *realistic* level... yeah.) Which was, after all, the point... just trust Elan to make it funny. And sad.
Go Giant.
Edit: Wow, yeah, I guess that's what bardic ranks in Knowledge (history) are for -- not only do they give you +2 to bardic knowledge checks, but they allow you to shamelessly crib from Great Speeches in History (or Fictionalized Versions thereof, at least).
Re-edit: Yeah, the reference to the "volume selling" of potions was cute.Last edited by tiercel; 2007-03-02 at 10:06 PM.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
Yep, typical Elan.
I haven't seen it in a long time, but wasn't the "we won't vanish into the night" thingy independence day?
Also, it's funny - Elan truly screwed up a dramatic moment. Well, once you turn away from the bard path, forever it will screw up your dramatics...Last edited by Cifer; 2007-03-02 at 10:10 PM.

Re: OOTS #421 - The Discussion Thread
Wow. Definitely an Elan moment, but I can't decide if the Dashing Swordsman outfit enhances or detracts from it. I'm going to have to say it's better, it makes Elan more distinctive, and blue/white is definitely his color.
"...I worry that modern gaming is gradually shrinking the wide spectrum of gameplay mechanics into a single narrow red bar with "KILL" written on it sideways. Exploration, navigation, puzzles, platforming, all gradually shrinking away until only one thing remains, being taken by the hand from room to room, moving on only when nothing remains alive in each one." - Yhatzee Crosshaw
