    The Story So Far

    Spoiler
    Show

    Prologue
    Neverwinter Nights

Sergor Bersk, Liuailo Galanodel, Torinn Yarjerit, Kayjat 'Keys' Rosendoofe, Aeron, and Kit, six adventurers from various upbringings and walks of life, have each recieved a letter from a mutual acquaintance. Gundren Rockseeker, an ambitiois and enterprising young dwarf, invited the group to join him at the Driftwood Tavern in the city of Neverwinter where he explained that they would be responsible for escorting a wagon full of provisions to the town of Phandalin, keeping it safe from the bandits along the road. Not letting on any further details about what his newest opportunity might by, the dwarf and his escort rode on ahead to prepare things in advance, leaving the group to enjoy a warm meal and make their introductions before setting out on their journey the next morning.

    Chapter One
    The Road to Phandalin

The next morning the group helped the tavern workers load up their ox-drawn wagon and set out through the city's southern gates. For the first two days of their journey the adventurers followed the High Road, the major trade road that runs along the shores of the great Sea of Swords. Traveling along the road was fast paced and easy enough, though still they kept an eye out for dangers as bandits have been known to strike at unprepared travelers in hopes of an easy score. On the third day the turned eastward and began to work their way down the much smaller Triboar Trail. Just before the group decided to break for lunch at midday they happened upon a pair of horses that had been killed in the road. Further investigation found them to be the horses that Gundren and his companion had set out on. Suddenly, seeing that their distraction had worked, four goblins burst from their hiding places and rush towards the group and their wagon.

The adventurers make quick work on the goblin ambush crew, especially with a well-placed sleep spell, and soon have one of them bound and tied as a prisoner. While interrogating their captive the group gets into a minor argument in regards to what should be done with the prisoner and to cool their heads the split up and begin to scour the area. Signs point to the fact that the goblins have been using the location to ambush the road several times and they even discover a trail into the woods with marks of two humanoids being dragged. Splotch, the goblin prisoner, pleads for his release and tells the grouop that someone calling themselves The Black Spider hired the goblin clan to kipnap Gundren and bring him and his belongings to a castle in southern Neverwinter Wood. Following the trail through the woods leads the group to the golbin's hideout, a cave in the face of a large hill, but no activity is able to be seen from outside. Still conflicted about the fate of their prisoner, Aeron releases the creature but a mere moment and a half later both Torinn and Sergor strike the goblin down, killing him.

    Chapter Two
    The Cragmaw Hideout

After quickly dispatching the lazy guards outside the cavern the group begins to head into the goblin lair. Unfortunately the group runs into a few complications, Sergor causes an avalanche of rock while trying to climb a side passage and alerts a goblin lookout. After the lookout is dealt with the group rounds the corner to find more goblins working to loosen the supports on a makeshift damn holding back a large pool of water. Quick action allows a few to dodge the wave, but the others are swept out of the cave entirely and unfortunately Sergor doesnt survive. The gods do seem to grant the party some favor though as they soon encounter a wandering cleric who tends to their wounds and agrees to join the expedition. Making their way back into the maw once more, the group dispatches a small group of goblins before accidently charging into the lair of the bugbear leader Klarg. Torinn stands toe to toe with the bugbear and somehow manages to fight through the massive blows sustained from the beast's morning star. A few quick moments later and the gorup stands victorious, unscathed save for the dragonborn's wounds. While Aeron ties up the goblins and interrogates them Kit stumbles upon the secret stash of stolen money the bugbear had been keeping. With some forceful convincing, the ranger is able to get the goblins to reveal that Gundren has been taken to Cragmaw Castle but apparently Sildar is still in the lair somewhere.

Making their way across the rope bridge from before the group finds their way into the final chamber of the cave and surprises the gang of goblins holding Sildar. With a bit of fearsome threats, aided by showing the severed head of the bugbear, the group is able to convince the goblins to release the warrior. Yeemik, the goblin captain assumes control of the band of Cragmaws as the group hastily retreats from the cave and makes their way once again towards their destination of Phandalin.

    Chapter Three
    Phandalin

After spending the night at the Stonehill Innthe group splits up to begin running various errands in town. The wagon of supplies is delivered and their payments received from the provisoner who gives a few suggestions about who in town may know the location of the castle. Keys discovers the kepper of the towns shrine is looking for help in asking a banshee for the location of a long lost spellbook. Arha, Torrin, and Aeron meet first with a retired adventurer who now owns an apple orchard and then with a halfling farmer who gives them their first lead: a druid friend who would most likely know the location where Gundren was being held. Unfortunately he has traveled north to the ruins of Thundertree.

As they returned to the main street of town the group happened upon a group of Redbrand ruffians causing trouble with another adventurer and quickly jumped in to assist. They made quick work of three of the men and took the fourth captive before hauling him off to the Townmaster's Hall. There they discussed things with Sildar and the townmaster Harbin as well as interrogated the prisoner to discover that the Black Spider had paid the Redbrands to drive off any adventurers just like the goblins from the road. While the townsmaster went downstairs to lock up the bandit, the group discussed several things with Sildar, learning that he was a member of The Lords' Alliance and also on the prowl for his friend and guildmate, larno Albrek, who came to the area two months ago and hasn't been heard from sense. They also spoke with Halia Thornton who is offering a one hundred gold reward for dealing with the Redbrands but appears to have motives of her own.

A Few Notes On Post Formatting

Here's a few points on post formating just to keep things similar and easy for everyone to follow along with whats going on.

    - To the greatest extent possible, keep OoC questions and comments in the OoC thread but if something is placed in an IC post please use spoiler tags.
    - Please begin your posts with your character's name bolded. If you wish to also make this a link to your character sheet, you may.
    - Your mechanical actions such as attacks, skill checks, and spells should be tucked into a spoiler block.
    - Remember you cannot edit rolls, and if you hit the preview button it will turn your dice tags into [roll0] and such.

    - I'm gonna have a chat with spell casters about speeding up combat by having them roll the moster's saves to their spells rather than waiting on me to do so. More to come on this.

Your post should look something similar to this:

    Rook Deadeye

Drawing his sword from his belt, the half-orc glares at the small lizardlike creature emerging from the underbrush. Sweat drips from his brow from the beating mid-day sun and runs along the wicked scar in his cheek. He grins a toothy half smile and starts to charge. "You've made your last mistake vermin!

    Introductions, huh? Okay!
This is kind of my first time playing a game not using 3.5, so if that bleeds through on accident, or if I just plain mess up, do feel free to slap me about the head a bit and tell me what I did wrong
Also, feel free to call me whatever, though Trent is a nickname other people use a fair bit.
Aside from that, I'm excited for this to get going!

Edit: Ah, yes, posting frequency. I'm usually able to get at least an hour at work to myself so I can post, but I'll probably be most active after work. At the very least I should be able to post once per day, barring unforseen circumstances. However, its likely to be a lot more often than that.

This is my first time playing 5e, I just recently started running a game at home.

I've mostly been playing 4e for the last few years, which a little bit of Pathfinder here and there.

I have a desk job, so I can usually find time to post during the day, but weekends are a bit less certain.

    Good morning fellow partymembers!

BH, thanks for the opportunity to play in this game. As you know, I'm currently running this game on GitP as well, but it will be fun to get in as a player.

That said, I will do my best not to metagame!

I've been playing D&D off and on for about 25 years. I started with AD&D in the early 90's when I was in middle school, then I took a break for 3E/3.5 while I was in college/grad school. I came back into the game with the introduction of 4th edition (I was sucked in by the Acquisitions, Inc. podcasts, and now the Critical Hit podcast) and I'm currently running two 4e games and a 5e game.

I work in Compliance as my day job, so I am at a desk most of the time (and it makes me somewhat of a rules lawyer). My weekends are my own, usually, but I will check in every night regardless.

Aaaaaand, in my spare time I draw monsters and characters for my games!

Here are some examples for my recent games. I'd be happy to draw any of your characters if you're interested!

    Hi all

It's been a while since I've played DnD at all, in addition to being my first 5e game. I'm really looking forward to how this system works out - I like the basics of 3.5 (the only other version I've played), but there's just too much stuff to keep me interested.

I should be able to post once a day at minimum, though I probably won't post more than that very often. It usually takes me a while to consider anything I write.

Also I'd like to take this colour, unless someone else really wants it.

Edit: Yeah, thanks BH for the opportunity to play.

Edit 2: Sorry, I'll take this colour instead.

Dont go over thinking things too much. We're all chummy here, not like you're writing an essay. Besides you're the fighter, its pretty cut and dry.

    Oh, you guys!

Since introductions are in the mode, so to speak, what is there to know about me? Well, I've been playing D&D since I started middle school. I was first formally introduced to the game by a friend who played random dungeon crawls after school; he and I would get together with several classmates and we'd basically see how long we'd go before some eldritch nightmare ripped our PCs' faces off. These were harrowing games, and it only makes sense in retrospect that we moved on to Ravenloft once we'd matured a bit in our roleplaying skills. Mind, TPKs were no less common in this formative era.

Currently, I'm a graduate student. I do physics by day, and part of our program requirements have me work a certain number of hours for the company that pays my tuition and gives me hands-on experience with real spaceflight hardware. I'm in aerospace. It's a damn interesting job and I've gotten my hands dirty in just about every region of the IR&D process. Too bad the R&D process is so long that nothing I've worked on over the last three years will enter orbit until at least 2016!

All that said, I consider myself pretty good with numbers and a computer. Maybe not as good as these Google Docs that everyone's passing around, but then what is?

Let's see... My favorite RPGs are currently Mage: the Awakening, Dungeon World, and Fate. I never could get into D&D 4E, but I consider my Pathfinder skills pretty sharp, if a little exhausted. I'd much rather try this new edition than continue to struggle with the same fundamental problems that were present in 3.5.

Who knows? Maybe I'll even run it when I get my mitts on the DMG.

Edit: I draw as well. My drawthread is a little barren, but I'll post some art when I get the chance. I'd be happy to draw our party when the time becomes available.

Edit 2: As far as availability is concerned, my work entails a high degree of variability. On some days, I'll spend the entire afternoon in my office, but on others I might suit up for the cleanroom for eight solid hours. It really depends on my boss and advisor's whims. With that in mind, I'm most consistently available in the evening or early morning. I live in America, just to give you guys a rough idea of when that might be. Central time.

It's Healthcare Compliance, and it's mostly a lot of research and saying "no" to crazy ideas that people have. I liase with government entities at the local, state and federal level, and make sure that everyone plays by the rules.

Howdy folks. This is my first time playing PBP after a significant break, but I've never truly left the gitp forums. I'm excited to try more 5E.

I've played a couple sessions of 5E organized play (Encounters?) as a warlock. The relative simplicity is a nice change of pace from my traditional 3.5/PF games.

I notice we don't have a cleric, druid, or bard in this group, which might be cause for concern. If we're really worried about not having any healers, I could re-skin Keys as a bard with little difficulty. Thoughts?

Keys as a bard would be fine with me (already have entertainer background!). That said, I think we can probably just overkill anything that comes our way for now. If we level up, I could easily see myself going MC Druid actually.

Super busy at work hence typos and mistakes earlier. =X

1.) Sorry about the fighter / barbarian mix up, I knew what I meant to say I just didnt.

2.) I could tell it was vector art, which is why I guessed Illustrator. I've never messed with Inkscape though.

3.) My old tracker and map is still in my sig, but it is about time I updated me thinks.

4.) I'm fine if someone wants to tweak a character, nothing is set in stone, I promise I wasnt denying you a healer out of pure spite and evil DMiness. There were... reasons...

It took me a while to tweak my 4e map to work for 5e. The biggest issue was just putting the save modifiers in for monsters, so that my casters could roll saves when they attack monsters and save time.

Aye, I saw that you were doing that in yours and assumed that I would do something simliar. I expect there to be a few growing pains as I curse and tweak a thing or two but normally I find my grove after the first or second combat. I want to have clear and easy to use google docs for the party, but just remember that I cannot actually update them at work... this may result in my moving the thread forward but the tracker being outdated for a period of 12 hours or so until I'm home on my laptop and able to play catch up.

Also, I see that someone has already done so, but yes, feel free to take tidbits of the bread and such for trail food. I'm not super concerned with tracking it like rations and such... If nothing else its always something to roleplay when you cant think of something else.

'Rook retrieves a chunk of bread from his cloak where he had stashed it and casually gnaws on it while the others are busy discussing the mysteries of the world. Munch Munch Much.'

Yeah, it was more to indicate that my character is wary and cautious, and that he doesn't take anything, even his next meal, for granted. Most likely I will forget about the bread unless I fail on a stealth check and I can have it humorously fall out of my shirt and roll across the ground in front of the guard we're trying to sneak past.

Or until you wake up with Kit's pet mouse in your shirt trying to get some food.

Speaking of which, I'm home now, gonna eat some chow hall food thats been cold for ...um...7 hours now. Bed time is about an hour away. Juts as a heads up, so people can sorta get used to my whacky schedule.

Sounds thrilling. I'm no stranger to wacky schedules, but I think I'd go mad if I were forced to work one and eat cold "chow hall" food. Then again, my mental image of a chow hall is of a squat, tin, whitewashed building with poor ventilation, stocked with row after row of benches and sweltering in the sun*.

Could be worse. I work noon til midnight this time around. On my last deployment (Afghanistan) I worked the other shift.

I had to wake up at 11pm, go get chow ((midnight chow served breakfast food)), work for six hours, eat 'lunch' ((its now 6am and so its breakfast food again)), then work six to seven more hours before taking a 45 minute bus ride home and deciding that a 20 minute walk to get actual food wasnt worth it.

So I had omelettes, grits, and corned beef hash twice a day... for six months. To this day I cannot eat eggs plain any more. In fact I most commonly cover my scrambled eggs in A1 steak sauce because otherwise they appear to have no flavor.

Chow hall here is a big open building about the size of two basketball courts side by side, maybe a hair bigger, lined with four rows of tables on either side of a central isle. At one end is the kitchen and food lines and such. In afghanistan it was slightly more ghetto but mostly the same concept. Unless you were eating in the one near 'tent city' in which case it was very much a tent with a food line down both sides, then you took your food to one of five tents full of picnic tables.

I'm allergic to eggs. This is my personal Hell.

The canonicity of Kit's story may be called into question.

If that story isn't canon, I'll be a gecko's uncle
