Is it accurate to say Belkar has been acting as if he were in a video game? At this point I would've quoted the post detailing how Belkar is 'indifferent evil', and distinct from the villians in the story, but I can't find it...

Sounds like Belkar's starting to realise how he's in story where his actions and evil-ness matter more, and trying to shift accordingly.

Personally, I think Belkar's slow character growth is a result of him starting to actually play the game more than anything else. My 2 cp.

Pretty much. The comics are a blessing and we just thank the skies when they

So what is Belkar planning to do with the clasp?

Use it for the purpose he wanted it for and suck up the no-actual-mechanical-penalties pain.

(It is unfortunate for Belkar that he doesn't know Protection from any Alignment would protect him from mind control regardless of the controller's alignment, but he might have trouble getting an at-will Protection from Good/Protection from Law item anyway, in a settlement where the merchants treat "of course you're not evil" as something to assume.)

I don't see why this would not be a thing.

A tacit acknowledgement that the by-the-book diplomacy rules are sufficiently unbalanced and unrealistic that telling a player "this happened to your character" is insulting in a way telling the same player "your character's face just got melted by an acid arrow" is not.

I'm a bit confused. The only "personal house rule" you could read into that is the option to opt out of the D&D rule which you yourself admit exists. And the impression I've gotten from your writing is that you would also house rule this to not be a thing.
