Default Zodi Plays: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

And thus begins our second game thread! We'll be playing Skyward Sword, the first in the Zelda timeline and one of my favorite of the Zelda games in general. Updates proper will begin on Friday, but I said this'd come out at the start of the month so it's out now! We'll be discussing a lot of stuff in this thread (hopefully) like game design, writing, and other neat fun stuff that I come up with. As with the last thread, whoever contributes the most will get a super special surprise! So get contributing!

Zodi Plays: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword [1] ALARM BIRD, BIRD ALARM!

    Video Length: 23:24

NOTE: This video has a weird kind of cropping issue. I've fixed it in the next parts, don't worry. Just...consider it early installment weirdness like with Sproggiwood's desync. Huzzah!

This video covers the first bit of the opening tutorial. Now, considering this is the first Zelda game on the Wii to REALLY make use of the Wiimote (Twilight Princess kind of did) and also considering that "every game is someone's first" I'm completely okay with the level of tutorializing we've got in this video. It feels alright to me. That said, I also kind of need it since I'm a little rusty!

This video also shows us a sort of running theme I've noticed. Zelda really likes pushing people off things! Jeez lady, be a bit more careful.

    -------------

So, about the Loftwings. They're big ole fluffy birds with big banana beaks. Kinda silly right?

WRONG. The Loftwing is based on the Shoebill, which is I think one of the coolest birds. They are a type of stork bird, and as such actually pretty big in real life. They're super cool and great and can fly and their beaks are really strong (they typically eat their prey by decapitating them with their titular shoe shaped bill).

Shoebills also have the special ability to look super happy and amazingly pissed off depending on the angle you look at them from. It's pretty neat.

    Video Playlist

This leads to the playlist for the videos. In turn, the video's have links to the post they're from. It's a system!

    WOO, NEW THREAD!

Also, geez, Zelda, stop pushing people off of cliffs. That's a bad habit.

I wonder where that bird could've gotten off to?

I have to ask, how come the residents of Skyloft haven't all fallen to their deaths yet, given how small and perilously high the island is? Is that why there's only 20 or so NPCs in the town?
Also 23 minutes long and no Groose? I feel cheated!

I'll be sure to show why, exactly, they haven't fallen to their deaths in a later episode. Because trust me, there IS a reason, and it's pretty cool! Also I imagine most people are just extra careful.

Yes yes, Groose is next episode. Longtorial is long!

You may as well ask how the entire population gets their food and water.

Later, you might get a small non-explanation for food, but water's just sort of there despite being above the clouds.

I'm pretty sure if you look up, there are clouds even above these clouds. Given that all the areas that have water are closed in, I think it's safe to say that water is renewable. I think they primarily eat vegetables and fruits, in regards to food. Or like, the smallish sky animals that we'll be seeing later.

    Fair enough. :P

Also a bit of trivia: If you look closely at the opening cutscene, one of the Skyloft knights is actually riding a beta model of a Loftwing, looking noticeably less detailed than the finalised Loftwing models.

Okay, I should have a couple of hours free when I finish lectures (that's 6 hours from now) so I'll try and do a post with all of my thoughts on the game to that point. Would writing more in a separate spoiler be acceptable, as long as it's labeled as such?

Regardless, this has really made me want to play this game again! Too bad the Wii is at home and I'm at uni

Yeah, it would be acceptable. I'm alright with people discussing the video's out of spoilers though.

I really dislike the "forced Japanse groans", and it displeases me that it's one of the only three sounds Link is capable of making. Good thing I know this is the video he uses them the most in. I really like the figurines on Link's shelf, though.

Also, first you go through all the hassle to try and get Mia down to the balcony, and then you just throw her at the door, and that's accepted.

Actually, Groose is in this video. He and his two friends are the three people jumping off the pier at 5:25, which establishes a bit of fun continuity when you are aware of later events.

Well, there are waterfalls as large as the floating islands they fall from, so I'd say it's fair to assume there are magical springs supplying them with the water, yes.

Yeah that's a Japan thing I've basically just...entirely blocked it out.

The suffering is real, Teddy. CATS.

I don't recall seeing waterfalls but I'm silly. Also, accidently deleted it but nice catch on seeing those characters jumping off near the start.

I'd be fine with you linking this there, yeah. Speaking of which, update today!

Zodi Plays: The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword [2] Skyloft Loop

    Video Length: 24:26

In this episode...grand confusion as I forget where to go, and end up completing a full loop of the island while trying to make any sort of actual progress! Enjoy the (sped up) sights of Skyloft and it's peoples. We'll be seeing more of them eventually . Some of these people are emblematic of silly things we don't need to discuss. Some of these people are nice and friendly but look weird because they're sky children. And some people...are Groose.

After finally figuring out where to go, I obtain our first weapon, and receive a perfectly fine tutorial explaining how it works. Considering the wiimote+ add on that is required for this game, getting a good feel for how the sword works is vital. I think my sensor position is a little off from when I played it last so I have some minor issues with it at first, but rest assured I'll be swinging pretty eventually. We also get introduced to BIRD MECHANIC, which is kind of super complicated feeling and sadly I don't think as enjoyable as they where going for. That said, I do have some fun with it, and style wise it just looks beautiful. Shame the sky seems so empty at the moment.

    ------------

The pompadour, named after King Louis XV's mistress Madame de Pompadour, is factually the greatest style of hair. It began in around the 18th century, inspired by Madame De Pompadour's own styled hair. Originally a style intended only for women, it was eventually popularized for men by Elvis Presley.

It's recently, as of the 21st century, received a pretty big rise in popularity. Mostly, it would seem, with Japanese kids trying to rebel in their own way. It's typically very awesome. And ridiculous. Additionally this hair style has been used in a lot of anime because, again, pompadour's are factually the greatest hair style.

    The Groose is loose!

Also, I love how not only does the game give you the option to mock his hair, but he gets seriously offended and angry if you do!

Ahh, Groose, I really can't stand you.

Also, it seems Zelda is staying at the Knight's academy, and I'm sad you missed to 'inspect' Fledge's door.

Also also, I think you missed an interesting-looking ledge back in the cave. It probably didn't hold anything overly amazing, but still...

I'm just it likely would of just said "Fledge's room" but I'll be sure to check it out later

Don't worry, any and all interesting things in Skyloft will be explored eventually.
