Default The Present-Continuous Verb of the Adjective Noun. 3.5

The message came to you each in different ways. A sudden whisper from a stranger on the street. A note scrawled into the margin of a tavern bill. A sudden coherent squawk from a otherwise nonsensical parrot at the river docks. A neatly lettered note under a "Kick Me" sign that became mysteriously attached to your back. But in all cases the message was the same.

"If you would be willing to attend a meeting at the house of Gnorra Hakan around the hour of eight past the noon this night, you may well hear a proposal of some interest."

In a town like Tamesis, you can't go three paces some nights without some people offering you a "proposal of some interest". Often involving young ladies. And you've learned--painfully in some cases, to ignore them. However, the name of Gnorra Hakan is not one you can just ignore. His reputation is that of a true captain of shadow industry. A crimelord of such clout that he walks among the very Oligarchs of the city as an equal. It's said that the only reason he doesn't own the Watch is because the Watch doesn't actually make any money and would be a poor investment. It is also said that everyone who draws breath in the teeming slums of the city does so only with Gnorra's permission.

But of course, people say a lot of things.

And so, severally and by divers means (that's a fancy way of saying "diverse". Not that you swam there) you find yourselves sitting in a antichamber in Gnorra's manse, shaded by cypress trees on the bluffs overlooking the river, the palaces of the oligarchs looming up (and, in your imagination, slightly away) on all sides.

A stone-faced steward, her arms bulky enough to impress an Ogre and her skin the jet black of the pure-blood Ellemanian tribes from the hill country to the west of the city, serves those that came early with spiced meats and dark, cold Valendisch ale while the last of you drift in. From what you've glimpsed of the rest of the manse, the rest of Gnorra's domestics are a little more obviously decorative and you prepared to guess he's sending a subtle message detailing this particular one to attend you. She carries a Falchion at her belt like another person might wear a dagger.

Truth to tell, you're quite glad to have a job offer. The late fighting around Ladoga seems to be winding up as a resounding victory for the Glorious Republican army (and the Valendisch High Seas Fleet, but that's not getting mentioned so much). Which means a recent flood of Imperial deserters and prisoners winding up on the streets of Tamesis and Sabrina and competing with you in the standard mercenary and bodyguard duties. Most of them are plainly bloodthirsty savages with no dignity or honour, but they are cheap. And it's not as though sending them back to the Young Empire would be a good idea.

At length, after all six of you have gathered and had a chance to chat for a few minutes, the hefty steward clears away the dishes and indicates for you to follow her.

The study of Gnorra Hakan is lit with the ruddy light of a low fire in the wall to the right, and by a brazier set against the wall on the left. Beside this latter, on a couch of velvet worked in Valendisch hawk-head motifs, reclines a woman wearing the daringly sheer, high-cut Ladogan style of dress that has recently become fashionable among the higher class of the cities courtesans. She has the sharp Valendisch facial features, but the dark skin of a Half-blood. Her hard eyes look with disinterest at each of you in turn as you file into the room.

Gnorra Hakan stands up behind his desk in the center of the room. A tall, erect Orc in a sleeveless robe of bright blood red. His face is just beginning to show the signs of age, but his arms are still thick with corded muscle. His eyes move smoothly over each of you, and his mouth curves in a smile.

"Welcome!", he says. "I'm very glad you all came. I've heard of each of you these last few weeks. Here and there. Doing this and that. And now I need you to do this and that for me." He moved out from behind his desk and stands before you. His hands just casually brushing the axes on his belt. " It will mean leaving town for a bit. It will mean beginning very soon. And it needs to be done with discretion.". He pauses to emphasize the word. "In fact, Let's say what will happen if I explain further, and you do not want to do the job I ask. Then I will have my people take you down to the docks, give you enough gold to compensate your time, and put you on a ship for Tatta, or the Empire, or the Floral Isles. Somewhere far away. Somewhere where if blab about what I am about to tell you, the word will not get back to here until after the job is done. Do you understand?"

Alice Gray, an athletic-looking redheaded woman carrying a longsword on her back, spends most of the time leaning on the wall, with her arms crossed at her chest, carefully watching other people invited. What looks like a spoiled kid from a good house having a rebelious phase. A mountain of muscles on a horned head. Apparently another representative of criminal underground element, so many of which she has been...questioning every night since her stay. Which reminds her she is now in a house of one of them. And he is probably either going to kill her or worse, wants to make a deal. She hopes Heironeous won't mind - after all this is just a criminal, even if rich one, she hunts actual monsters in human skin. Besides, looking at the last one of the invited, beautiful, almost etheral woman, Alice thinks their host cannot be so bad if somebody like that accepted his invitation.
Whait, no, that's second to last person gathered here. There is that gnome...is that a jester? What does this Gnorra guy wants from them? To organize birthday party to his kid?

Once they actually meet the guy and he talks, Alice still remains full of doubt. On the one hand, he made it clear it's something secret, but on the other, he could threaten to kill them and he didn't. Maybe it's not so bad? It's doubtful he wants to commit mass murder or anything.
"Weeeell." She starts, trying to sound nonchalantly. "From what I heard of you I'll give you benefit of doubt you aren't trying to commit a mass murder or anything, but there is a matter of payment. Couldn't really care about gold, but.... If you heard of me, you know I'm looking for certain people and you have a lot of influence and connections.... Say I help with this job, will you help me track them down?"

Gnorra's eyes pass from Seraphina to fix on Alice like two blank black pits. Orcs don't have terribly expressionate faces, as a rule. Gnorra seems like he'd be a good poker player. "Well, seems somebody's already wanting to alter the deal. Well, I might be amenable to that. Provisional on who it is that you're trying to track down; why it is that you're trying to track them down, and that I'm satisfied you have authority to do so." He smiles again, and his tusks glint against his lips.

"You learn a lot in my vocation, to always check who has authority. Some people--you would not believe--think a title or a name or a bag of gold lets them do whatever they want to whoever they want. Especially to my sort of people. Well, I like to teach them differently.

"However, to directly answer your question: Any mass-murdering done in the course of this job will be entirely incidental to my purposes. But, in this world, there are bad people, and there are people who stand in your way, and there are people who are better off dead. And sometimes the universe throws up a miracle of justice and makes these people all one and the same. If you take my meaning. And in answer to your question, Angeleyes".
He turns back to Seraphina. "I'd like to hear who's willing to commit to this. Because as I say, whoever hears what I say next and doesn't wish to commit to it is getting a long boat ride in their near future."

Arkom stands behind the rest with his back touching the wall once they enter the office. Not because he doesn't want to draw attention, he knows he can't do that, but because he is used to the comfort of not having someone behind him muttering that they can't see anything.
He has his armored arms crossed over his wide chest. Waiting to see the interaction between them and Gnorra. And speaks after he answers the punk girl.

"So say it already. If we accept the job, then there is job to be done. If we don't, we get a lovely paid vacation, either way we win. This is business, why disguise this as mysterious?"
Arkom voice is calm, but still strong and eager. He looks at the woman on the couch, asking himself if she was what she looked like.

While they were waiting, Arkom noticed the group of guests checking each other, the room, the guard. Wondering, making questions and mental anotations, figuring out what was going to happen after that.
He was just eating as much meat as possible, and washing it down with a little of ale.
This interview seems like it's going to be the same thing again. A waiting before the actual job is explained.

Not really more than a boy, Ardrik does everything in his power to seem important upon entering the room. Drawn up as tall as his relatively slight stature allows, he immediately makes a show of avoiding attention, skulking plainly into the most prominent well-lit corner of the room. Though his clothes are not rich, it would be hard to imagine colors more gaudy; in bright light they stand out as blue and black, and in dark they seem almost gold and white, inevitably demanding attention.
As conversation continues with no one pointing him out, he ends up having to draw attention by actually speaking. Summing up the whole of the hatred which infuses his dark soul, he pronounces his dark utterance in a hoarse whisper tinged with the horror that only eldritch knowledge such as his can impart.
"Aye...I know something of mystery. The Unknown which knowing would make known is, as I well know, something many would have known to avoid if they only knew what knowing might cause. Indeed, I am well acquainted with it. Speak clearly--no dread message can shake my weary soul."
This done, apparently in one breath based on the gradual lessening of his voice, Ardrik falls immediately into a twin fit of coughing from his whisper and gasping for air, which he conceals inexpertly by turning aside and doubling over. Apparently, being darkly mysterious takes practice.

Gnorra gives another toothy smile as Arkom speaks, and his eyes turn to rest upon on object on his desk (a little wooden box with a brass-hinged lid, for the curious). "Why so mysterious...why indeed..." he muses softly. Then looks up at Ardrik's words and subsequently fit of coughing.

"Okay son? Had one northern Blackguard too many? Should give those things up. Anyway. Simple words, simple job. I'm keeping it quiet because I want it not screwed up. I'm an old fashioned sort and think the easiest way to not screw up a secret plan is not to tell everyone."

"Still, the Bull of Ladoga has a point. Simple job. See the young lady?"
he indicates the woman on the couch with an open-palmed hand. "I want her discretely escorted to Khamsin. I want her arriving there alive and healthy. By alive I mean not dead. That sound simple?"

As much as she knows that sounding simple and being simple are two different things, Seraphina knows better than to bring this up. Instead she says:

"It does indeed sound simple enough. Might we be introduced to our charge?" all the while Seraphina has turned her attention to the young woman in an attempt to determine her nature.

"No good deed goes unpunished." Noona thinks as she sits quietly in the study seemingly focused on the cup of tea she is sipping, while in reality she is looking at everyone and everything and not trying to scream.

Three weeks ago she had helped the old woman with the sad story. "Find my granddaughter, please", she had implored. It seemed simple enough, a young redhead who had runoff with a fisherman. But few stories were so simple, and the fisherman had turned out to be a low-level pimp on the docks. Procuring what had been lost had been difficult, the man was a light sleeper and prone to violence, and...it had ended poorly for young Geeno. It was regrettable, and she had been discreet with the body, but the fact was she was alive, the girl returned, and the boy was dead. A boy she later found out worked for a certain Mr. Gnorra Hakan, an orc whose business she tried carefully to avoid, as much as one can in this city. One does not poke sleeping dragons. She mused.

Now here she was, in the dragon's study, a bellyful of tea and a cozy fire. She had stolen from him, technically, if only accidentally, and now she was being offered a "job". She could only assume he knew, to do otherwise would be foolish, but seemed shrewd enough to understand the circustances. Hence her situation wasn't much MUCH more unpleasant. Still, Gnorra Hakan was owed, and now the payment was due.

Sounds reasonable enough, Mr. Hakan. Noona said trying to keep her best smile on. Simple rarely meant easy, but somehow Noona doubted a true refusal was an option for her.

Alice lefts sigh of relief fly from her lungs.
"Phew, for a moment there I thought...erm, doesn't matter." She collects herself quickly. "Anyway, this sounds good to me. I'm a Paladin and stuff, sorta, helping fair maidens is what I do." She jokes. "Are we going by land or sea? Do we set of tomorrow? Or maybe today?"
In a spare moment she grabs a blank sheet of paper to describe people she has been looking for. Before leaving she hands it over to Gnorra, with a note saying that they are dangerous murderers, so even if he won't track them for her, he might save some lives by warning his men about them.

Gnorra seems to give the slightest of winces at the word "charge". As if Seraphina's passed the port to the left. But he simply says; "That would be up to her. Young Lady?" the last two words are plainly addressed to the young woman.

Who is rising from the couch like a snake in silk. She doesn't stand like a courtesan. At least, maybe not the normal sort of courtesan. More like the sort that are proficient in whip. Actually, more the sort that train others to be proficient in whip.

"And here's I thinking this lot were all wet as a seal to get to grips with adventure." she says in a flat, dusky northern drawl. "Now names and social graces. Fair Maiden? Sorry. Neither. Very well." Her eyes and chin have a hard set to them as her eyes travel back and forth across the party, then centre on Seraphina. "I am Stahlena Reidresel Bel Khamsin. Somewhat to my inconvenience. And you?"

" I am Seraphina often called Silversong. It is a pleasure Mistress Stahlena." Serapina says. All the while wracking her brain to remember where she has heard the name Stahlena Reidresel Bel Khamsin.

With whatever shreds of grace he can muster, Ardrik hisses from the corner.

"You may know me-" He coughs again, almost falling into a fit. Nope, he's gonna have to talk like a normal person.

"I am LeFaust known by names too terrible to speak,"
he says at a pitch that doesn't quite fall into the standard depths of the male register. "You will pardon my fit. Some curses don't fade easily."

Gnorra gets that "Oh dear. Somebody said something silly again" twinge; but Stahlena just gives a short nod that doesn't take her eyes off you. ""Mistress", will do I suppose. Long as I'm dressed like this. Best we're careful about names though. Good to see you...Silversong...Alice......LeFaust" She moves forward one step and holds out a hand for a short, abrupt shake. Her palm is hard with calluses.

"As for the practical question...Mister Hakan, if you'll permit me" she swivels to face Gnorra briefly and gives him another of those short nods, a gesture he returns. "Gnorra has passage for a party of seven booked for Sabrina on three different river-vessels. Two of those are departing at dawn, the other a more surreptitious craft departing whenever we turn up. We're free to make use of any one of them, or we could try something different and Gnorra will use them as distractions.

"If we do use one, then from Sabrina we could try a ship to Rubica, then across the passes to Shamal and along the north coast. That's what you might call the obvious way. Across to Skamanda and by land over the high steppes would be...daring"
She skins her teeth in a short smile. "Unfortunately, with the fighting around Ladoga, the Straights are a little dangerous. Too many Imperial ships gone pirate after their fleet was shattered. Taking refuge in a hundred little coves and islands. They'll mostly be all dead in a few months, but I suppose it's better than going back home and getting impaled for failure."

"Along with their entire extended family and anyone else whose name begins with the same letter." says Gnorra with a shrug. "Emperor Persinax likes to think of himself as stern but fair. In any event, if you choose a different route altogether--by land to Duna and over the mountains, say, then that's up to you. You'll have gold. But I fear my organisation doesn't extend in force beyond the city, and I will be preoccupied with another part of this business. So be prepared to make your own choices."

It's not the first time someone calls Arkom that nickname, and he wonders if Gnorra knows him from some earlier encounter or he just made it up and it was a coincidence.

Arkom looks closely to Stahlena when she introduces herself, but he ignores who she is.
After Gnorra and Stahlena seem to have finished delivering the mission and all the group asks is when, Arkom looks at the group again, and wonders... why them? He could not believe they were professionals, and half of them didn't even look they have tasted battle. I sure hope we are not one of the decoy groups to let the real ones travel safe...

"That's it?" Arkom finally asks Gnorra. "If you are willing to ask us for this job it must be that you believe in us or you just don't have a better option. Since you don't know us, my guess is the latter. So why keep your information secret?"
Arkom makes a pause, waiting for the other guests to react, but decides to continue after looking at their expressions. "Who is trying to kill her and why. Who should we deliver her to. When and where will we recieve our payment, and most importantly, how much is the payment if we accept, if we succeed, and if we refuse." Arkom smirks and rubs his metallic fingers while saying the last part.

Every second he spend there watching the interactions, the more he was sure Gnorra had few options. They were summoned individualy, they were not asked to give their weapons, Arkom had only been on Tamesis for a few weeks, so Gnorra should have a problem trusting this mission to their own men. He needed people not connected to him.
Whatever he offers, I'm sure we can ask more.

After thinking that, Arkom notices he is assuming everyone will accept, and that they would be traveling and most likely fighting together. Were they all ready to do that? His eyes unconsciously stopped over the grim kid.

Gnorra seems about to give Noona an answer when Arkom speaks. He turns to the horned one and stares with his deep black eyes. "I never said anything about anyone trying to have 'Lena killed." he says softly. "That would be you jumping to a conclusion. It may be a correct conclusion, we don't know. We do know that there's some that seem not to wish her well. I've no intention of keeping secrets from you, you just did not ask."

"And in any event. Those would be my secrets, and mine to tell." says Stahlena flatly. "I'm sure Mr Hakan would have much more interesting secrets. Involving more names and numbers." She crosses to the side of Gnorra desk, and briefly runs her hand over the little wooden box there, then faces the party again. "Very well. The story. Short version."

"My sister Eisenada, and myself came to Tamesis about a year ago, to study arts "appropriate and useful for young gentlewoman" at a certain exclusive academy. You can imagine the sort. Dancing. Deportment. Courtesy. Etiquette. Conversation. Conspiracy. Seduction. Lethal Violence. Lethal Non-Violence. You know". She shrugs.

"While we were away from home, a number of Khamsin people of quality had one unfortunate accident or another. Haman Veerling was killed in the recent naval fighting last month. Couple of months before that, Marik Debrecen was killed in an unsanctioned Trial of Five, and his killer forced into exile. One lovely couple with whom I wasn't personally acquainted were killed in an avalanche between Shamal and the Duna valley. All Unrelated and random. Of course"

She says tonelessly. "All of which means, owing to the arcane and occluded system of secession used by the city of Khamsin, that Eisenada and myself went from being a pair of comfortable young ladies of no great importance to Heirs Apparent to the city Mastership. An awkward situation, to suddenly become very important two thousand miles from where you should be, in a foreign city, with no guard and little coin. And it seems we might have been the last people concerned to get all the relevant news.

"Two nights ago, the penny had just about dropped for us when we were attacked crossing a park. We avoided our attackers-Imperial mercenary sorts--and began to make plans for a swift exit from the city. I made the mistake of leaving Eisenada at our dwelling to pack while I attempted--unsuccessfully--to get some use out of the Watch. Seems The Watch is afraid of politics. I returned to find our rooms ransacked, blood on the floors, and Eisenada gone.

"I made quite a sinister figure for the next few hours, wandering the city by night looking for her. I returned a little after sunrise to find this on our doorstop."
She puts a hand to the little wooden box, opens it, and draws out a human hand. It is almost a twin to the own she holds it in, though paler in complexion. The wrist has been severed with a dozen or more messy chops.

"Eisenada's.", she says quietly. "The scar on the second knuckle I put there myself. With my chin. At age six. At that point I really did begin to feel rather alone. And then I remembered Mister Hakan."

Gnorra smiles grimly. "I adventured with the late Mister Riedresel, a long time ago, before we both settled down. And I'm quite prepared to go a bit out of my way for his daughters. And because that connection well may be known, I need people not connected with me.

"Other than what 'Lena's told you. I'm embarrassed to say I am not sure yet where this plot against her and her twin originates. There's a lot in the Republic who wouldn't mind seeing a pair of Valendisch ladies come to grief, and more than a few in Valenda that might stand to profit with them out of the way."

"So, the best we've come up with so far is: I need to get home, to claim my rights. Mister Hakan will look for my sister. I'd like to do that, but if I fail, I fail us both. I don't know if she's dead or a prisoner, and I can't afford to fail now." She puts the severed hand back into the box and closes it with a click. "Money was asked about?"

When Stahlena starts, Alice smirks at the early part of the story, thinking how lucky she was to avoid some of those when she was kicked out of her home. But as the story continues, taking much darker tone, Alice's smile fades and she herself starts avoiding other's eyes, until she just turns her sight down, with sad expression on her face. She thinks of grief that had befallen her not so long ago, memories still very fresh.
"I'm impressed how well you're doing in this situation." She tries to sound like the story haven't moved her, but fails. "My sword is at your command. Or my fists. Or whatever, you get the point." She tries to sound noble, like a worthy of paladin title. And miserably fails.

the story has a decidedly strong impact on Seraphina. She has to take a second not to be sick, but very quickly recovers.

It had been some weeks since Jester had any time to entertain new employment or even sit down for a proper meal with tables and cutlery for that matter, in a city like this hired cut throats generally keep busy but truly good ones that know how to keep hidden never get a chance to rest or relax. After filling himself with a startling amount of food and drink, Jester wearily rested his eyes allowing his contentment to spread over his body. Talking made him ever so tired, he preferred just getting written missives, they were to the point and no one tried to get him to bloody perform or dance like some monkey. Though it was partially his fault for the last part, the secret to being a good shadow is having some form of cover in plain sight, his was an ironic one. His parents had a sick sense of humor naming his 'Jester' considering the taller folk already looked down at their kind and giving a name like that was just painting a target his back but alas he embraced his fate and made it his own. In truth he was the lousiest Jester one could ever imagine, his jokes and puns varied from wildly offensive to utterly flat but some eerily find it funny just how bad of a jest he actually was. That worked just fine for him, his creepy, disheveled appearance allowed for him to move around easily in the street and it was a snap fitting into social functions where he actually did his real profession.

As the others droned on with their social niceties Jester softly began snoring, mouth ajar with a thin string of saliva working its way down from the corner of his mouth. He wasn't actually sleeping, just merely allowing the rest of the assembled folk to wonder what someone like him was doing here and promptly dismiss him which is exactly what he wanted. Normally he worked alone but hey it would be career suicide to refuse employment from the Underworld King Pin and Gnorra was no fool, the fact that Jester showed up in plain sight was confirmation that he accepted whatever job the Orc offered. Jester had learned to stifle any form of morality that threatened to grow in him thus allowing him a far wider pool of work to select from. Money wasn't, Jester was in his line of work for the sheer challenge and satisfaction of coming out on top, any pay that came after a job went to practical uses or was put in his stash for a more expensive purchase. Without warning an unexpected bout of gas expelled itself during this ever so touching moment, Jester only prayed it didn't draw attention to him but it was a doomed hope for the stench was already apparent to him and it was a thing of horror and beauty.

Noona's mouth went up and down as the...bloom of Jester's flower hit her fully. Noona had been focussed on Stahlina's story when the Gnome who had been pretending to nap under her chair like some overgrown house cat
    had...MY GOD.

"Ahem...well...I...what I mean to say is that I...ahem..." Noona begins to collect herself, her bubblyness replaced with a grim determination.
"My Lady, I am very sorry to hear this terrible news. Rest assured, once we have safely secured you
in Khamsim in your rightful position, I will do whatever in my power to assist Mr. Hakim in finding your sister...whatever her fate, on that you have my word That being said, the mighty Bull of Lagoda has a point, however
blunt it might be. Payment, must be discussed and plans made. We seem an unlikely bunch, but I have faith in Mr. Hakim's judgement and can already tell we are not all we seem. In light of such, I
suggest our plans captialize on this strength, and our plans are not as they seem."

Gnorra gives a long, silent look at Jester as the fragrance filters through the room, but turns back to the rest of you. "Understand that a man in my position, learns to keep it not by doing what he wants, but by knowing what he can do and where he can do it. It is understood that I rule Tamesis. And only Tamesis, and that I do not extensively expand my organisation beyond this city. In this way I come to be seen by those in other cities as a neighbour and partner, not as a threat. On this occasion this system has blindsided me. And shamed me where I should sit in most honour. This angers me, so you understand you may be assured I will not hold back on seeking Miss Eisenada Riedresel, punishing those that have hurt her, and helping you on your way. But understand as well by power diminishes the further you get from the city.

"Now, I will give you a thousand gold worth of gems and coin apiece to get started, and pledge another five thousand apiece on completion of mission. I understand that should Miss Stahlena be placed in her proper position of dignity, see could arrange more."
He turns a massive head toward the straight-backed woman.

"The Riedresels do not take pride in showing off wealth." says she quietly. "But never confuse not showing with not having. Now I appreciate your words and offered help toward seeking Eisenada, but the fact is I cannot afford to tarry here. The longer I am away from Khamsin the more likely it is that another front to this plot could be opened there. My enemies--whoever they are--might try to declare us both dead. Or spread rumours that I killed Eisenada myself, for whatever reason. I need to be in Khamsin short and sharp, and trust Gnorra to find my sister 'Nada or honour her with vengeance."

"Now. Our default plan is that I am to pose as the retainered fancy woman of the Oligarch Jenner Constantius, on a business mission on his behalf. You will be my bodyguards. Simple enough."
She stoops like a striking heron and brings up a parasol from behind the desk, its pattern matching her dress. She gives this a demure twirl over her shoulder and tries to look like a courtesan.

She's not terribly good at it. Courtesans--as far as you've seen them at a distance--have an ease and receptiveness to their pose. Stahlena, in spite of having all the trappings of luxury, seems poised to strike out at something. "It's not unusual for the rich and powerful to use their favoured courtesans as business emissaries. As both ambassador and tribute, so to speak. Jenner Constantius is known to prefer boys. However, he has a wife who is rumoured to prefer girls. And woman aren't permitted to retain courtesans. And the husband and wife are said to be willing to make arrangements for each other. And courtesans are professionally flexible. So that all fits together."

"And Jenner Constantius owes me a few favours." rumbles Gnorra, sounding amused. "Borrowing his name will be the least way he can repay one. And the whole mess is one that should make people disinclined to ask questions."

As time is not a luxury we can afford perhaps it would be best to seek out a magical mode of transport. She turns to Noona, and asks "Have you any contacts who might be able to locate such an item?"

Gnorra frowns. "I could do. Such items tend to be acquired with time and care. And money. Lots of money. The powers that be that wish to remain the powers that be keep a keen eye on such magicks, and the mages capable of producing them tend to be jealous with their power. The effort to obtain such items will attract attention. Probably long before it bears fruit". He is silent for a second. Then pulls open a draw in his desk and produces a scroll-case.

"I have such a scroll here. The cost of making people "forget" that I had it made amounted to more than ten times what it is worth. It would move four people less than half the distance you need. I want my old friend's daughter to have as much support as possible when she enters the halls of Khamsin, so I advise keeping all of you together."

"However, you may take it with my blessing. It might be needful along the way."

Understanding the gravity of the gift , Seraphina accepts the scroll, her hands tremoring ever so slightly. "Then we will only use it as a last resort." she says with resolve.

Now that we've discussed payment and a last contingency, we need to decide our route.

"I am afraid that Mr. Hakim is quite correct. Less than a handful of practitioners in the city have the power necessary to craft such an item, and none of them deal directly with the public. The Arcane Accords classify such magicks as restricted items, and those that are available are quite sought after. It would be both cost and time prohibitive as Mr. Hakim says. This scroll maybe indeed useful on our journey, if nothing else, as a contingency or clever option to get into the city. As to our route, I favor not the obvious route to Shamal, although likewise, I doubt any opposition would think us so dull as to use it. The direct route to Skamanda seems the most clever, as well as the most risky, and here I think is where our main deception should be. Personally, I think we would be best served joining a trade caravan to Duna, our numbers and identities shielded in covered wagons. In Duna, we could perhaps catch a trade caravan to Shimura, or a quick boat to Rubica. What say you?"

Alice reacts with suprise, when Seraphina places hand on her shoulder, but the girl's compassion is reassuring and appreciated. She smiles to mysterious woman, thaking her with a nod.
And then someone decides to ruin the mood. Why is this guy here again? Maybe she shouldn't judge by apperances, there is probably a reason for his pressence.
Alice listens to people making plans, this never was her thing, but she might try to help.
We could use mr. Bull's rather eye-catching apperance to our advantage - if people will keep their eyes on him, they will be lees likely to pay attention to Lady Stahlena. No offense buddy, but you're hard to miss in a crowd and that's coming from somebody with my hair." She makes joke to Arkom. She then turns to LeFaust "As for you, you could pretend to be her younger brother, who accompanies her in the journey. This way no one will question why someone of your posture is a bodyguard...no offense..... and you get to be close to her. Which, if you're half as good as you say, makes you her last line of defense."

LeFaust carefully unfolds from his (failed) calculatedly brooding hunch. "What posture?" he asks in a voice more whine than anything.

He clears his throat, and attempts to find an ominous pitch, "That, um, that said, I will certainly do that which I can in order to both guard protect! Yes, guard and protect Miss...ahem, our charge. That decided, we need to figure out who gets the scroll. It should remain with the core of the group. I am not incapable of using such a device. However, with my...affliction, I can not guarantee success."

    Bluff (1d20+21)[38]

"And also, I have to be her little brother?"

    The whine has returned.
