Default Morning's Shattered Star OOC: The Path of Desolation

The Path of Desolation - Arcane School

As the small wisp of light entered her chest, a fragment of an ancient memory entered her mind. The old familiar voice could be heard yet again in her ears like that of a recorded vision. Small flashes of visions echoed through her mind.... It was dark. But within that blackness, an immense shrouded figure stood, towering over 7ft in length, seeming made of whiping dark mist. His cloths no more then shadow-matter. He looked down upon her, as if she saw through the eyes of another. His eyes were haggered and mournful, a glowing blue light, held within the lifeless pale face of an old silver bearded man. Almost no other features could be made out from the living shadow-figure... Her thin, masculine arm moved up and dropped the small black flower bud in the mans hand, which emerged from the folds of shadow. Closing over it, before vanishing back into the misty darkness. He nodded affirmingly once, before speaking in a low gritty voice, in what sounded like a memorized, well versed-responce, spoken more times then the man cared to note. " Death...And Life. I deal in both. What'll it be...?" She recognized the voice of the man who spoke in reply. "...always the same, eh? " "If I was a less patient man, I'd end you.... again, and be done with it. But you've proven more useful then in times past.. And i'd had quite the venture preying that stupid flower from Astrok. You best make my efforts worthwhile... now answer the question....... What is this? " There was a pause. The old shadowy figure sat in a dark corner soundlessly. Then the words filled her mind, the vision vanishing leaving her only in darkness.

"...Long ago, in times that had never graced this world, or your own. The Dreamer, The Creator was betrayed by his brother. He took all his spite, his envy, his hatred, all his Sin, and created that force. He created 'Desolation'. Few could bare the burden of its maddening power. For with each 'Shard' a fraction of The Betrayer's spirit is reborn within a new vessel. Separate, unique, original and new, but with origins that are from the same. The strength you've gathered, this curse you've taken, is the as such. But unlike those before you, who had received a 'Shard of Desolation', you have taken to his spirit in full. Eventually.... in time. It will consume you, and you will be destroyed. Your spirit rent asunder like a thousand hands, a thousand souls erupting forth from your mouth, destroying you, utterly. There is no way, no power that can change this fate. Your natural affinity will give birth to The Destroyer once more... and when that madness has finally consumed your soul, you will be as a god... a World-Eater. Devouring the light of existence from the very planes which you will tread.

You have lived, in innocent ignorance of the endless litany of excessive violence that raged within the fragmented shards of the worlds that once were. Now you will be reborn as such. A fate, far more befitting for you then any man perhaps. The Betrayer... The Devourer.. The Lord of War. This is the Path of Desolation. The very force, of 'inexistance'. The Life-Stream of Annihilation. The power to unmake that which once was... leaving neither trace, nor remains, nor memory of what once was in any, and all worlds... This is what you have released upon your world... And your fate....

His voice drifted off. Pancked words could be heard from the man. "What!? ...Wha-no! Surely there is something that can be done. An answer! Tell me!" An old voice replied. " Death...And Life. I deal in both. What'll it be...?" The man screamed out. The man she had known as 'Sinofel'. "Fine! FINE! TAKE IT, TAKE THE DAMNED FLOWER! NOW TELL ME!" " Heh, so you had two... There is no way to stop what is to come. But you can face it. You can learn to control it, that your spirit might remain. You must gain a 'Shard of Creation' and fortify your spirit to contest the god who grows within your chest. You must become as The Dreamer, The Bringer of Peace....Heh." "...I don't have time for that! Do you know how long it took just to acquire THIS shard! I need time! What can I do to delay this malediction, that I may acquire the Shard?" " Death...And Life. I deal in both. What'll it be...?" "......." The sound of something could be heard, thrown upon the floor. " Resourceful, aren't we? ....You must release 'Her Children', Hensa still waits slumbering within your world. Release her, and upon her ascension I may reforge your sword, with the soul of one strong enough to belay, and contain The Devourer's curse.... "

The words faded off into the distance, but the knowledge, the memory remained. Yet, she was left with so many questions.

    The Path of Desolation

The Path of Desolation grants the Magister access to terrible and destructive powers. The further down the path the greater the strength of the powers that become available, however, advancing the path provides both terrible and inherent dangers and risks to both themselves, others, and possibly the very state of existence.

    (Su:) Annihilation
The Path of Desolation does not apply any of the character's current statistics, saves, or spell save DC's. Desolation Powers cannot be resisted by any target, and thus, there is no Save DC available to the target. Creatures Immune to Magic are not Immune to Desolation Magic. Damage types applies by Desolation Magic will always apply the 'Desolation' affix such as 'Desolation Fire Damage'. This damage cannot be resisted by energy resistance, or the applicable resistance that would normally be applied. All Desolation Damage ignores DR, traits, and Miss Chances that may be provided verse creatures or outsiders such as those with Incorporeal Traits. The user of Desolation Magic does not need to be proficient with arcane casting, and Caster Level does not apply to any spells of the Desolation School.

Annihilation will always apply to Desolation Magic, and will ignore any effect, condition, resistances, attempts to identify, or otherwise mimic or cancel the use of Desolation Magic. Desolation Magic can be used in areas of Anti-Magic and is not subject to Dispelling Effects. Desolation Magic is not considered any form of spellcasting, and cannot be identified as a spell or counter-spelled. Using Desolation Magic does not provoke an Attack of Opportunity, and does not require Concentration Checks to maintain any spell cast.

    (Su:) Annihilation Gale
The Desolation Mage has learned to channel their destructive energies into spells and magics that are unrelated to Desolation Magic. With a terrible force, the Mage channels the very forces of Annihilation through their bodies, their skin cracking and revealing glowing purple light of terrible energy, that illuminates a 10ft radius.

As a Full Round Action the Desolation Mage can cast any spell or spell like ability of their choice and apply (Su:) Annihilation to it as if it was a Desolation Spell, changing the damage type, and enjoying all benefits of a Desolation Spell. The damage, and DC to resist the spell is doubled. Upon completion of the spell, the channeled energy explodes forth from them, sending them flying 10 ft through the air in the opposite direction they are facing. The Mage takes damage if she strikes an object while being thrown back, as if she had fallen from a 10ft height. In Addition, she takes 1/4th of the Total Damage the spell dealt, directly. If The spell did not deal damage, The Desolation Mage suffers the same effects, but instead takes 4d6 of Desolation Electric Damage, +1d6 equal to the spell's level. After all damage is applied. The Mage is left prone where ever she lands.

    (Su:) Annihilation Channeling
The Desolation Mage has learned to channel her Bleakness, into various forms of energy, empowering her spells. While requiring a greater amount of focus, she is capable of arcane-feats unimaginable by others, toying with the very forces of life and death.

The Desolation Mage may cast a spell she knows and has prepared as normal, but as a Full Round Action. While casting the spell she may add an additional 1d8 of any energy type to include Positive and Negative Energy types, with the 'Desolation' Affix, but does not gain the benefits of an Annihilation Spell. (This Ability Spends 1 Point of Bleakness)

(Su:) Desolation Charge - The Devouring Night
The force of Desolation Magic runs off of a force called 'Bleakness'. To use Desolation Magic, Bleakness must be spent. Bleakness is generated passively while in battle, but may be generated outside of battle as a Move Action. Bleakness is an inherently dangerous that threatens to rip the Desolation Mage's body and spirit asunder. The maximum amount of Bleakness a Desolation Mage can contain within their body is equal to their Constitution Ability Score + Gate Level. (example: 7 Constitution + Gate Level 1 = 0/8 Bleakness)

This number, represents the amount of Bleakness the mage can safely contain, however, bleakness will continue to build up and pool regardless what their personal limit is. After breaking the Mage's safe range of Bleakness Points, the following round, the Mage will begin to suffer -1 in all of her Ability Scores in addition to loosing half her current Hit Points each round. The damage to her constitution score, will also actively lower her total HP and Bleakness Pool cap. If at any point one of her Ability Scores reaches 0. The Desolation Mage dies instantly. The total Bleakness Points she has are Totaled together x Character Level x 10, to Determine a Blast Radius centered around where her body has fallen. Immediately upon death, a void opens. Consuming all within the radius of the blast. Creatures within the blast may attempt a Reflex Save. (DC30+Bleakness Points + Character Level) On a successful check, they are reduced to -10 Hit Points. If this would kill the creature, the Save is considered failed.

Creatures who fail the save, and the mage herself are consumed within the void and are unmade. Their existence, equipment, soul, and any memories of them within any plane of existence are removed from all entities and/or creatures who were aware of the creatures existence. No remains are left from those caught within the blast. All caught within the blast, are considered dead, and may not be resurrected, or returned by means such as Wish or Miracle. Creatures caught within this explosion are permanently removed from the game, and may not be mentioned again. Actions performed by the individuals are forgotten, or history is altered to best fit their lack of ever having existed.
    ***********************************

    Discharging
the Desolation Mage has a number of methods to regulate their ability to control the violotile energies within themselves. Standing between the brink of the void, and boundless power. She must keep a constant watch on her internal limit to avoid being consumed by the very powers she commands.

The Desolation Mage may discharge their total Bleakness Points as a Full Round Action. They may discharge 1 point as a move action, or they may discharge 1 point as an Immediate Action, but this will consume their next turn, rather then their Swift Action for the following Round.
    ***********************************

    Generating Bleakness
In combat Bleakness is generated at the beginning of Every round, and an additional point is gained each time a spell or spell like ability is used, regardless of the source.
    ***********************************

( The Gates of Desolation )

Gaining further power as a Desolation Mage requires that they walk the 'Path of Desolation'. Sacrificing many things to further their own abilities. Upon the Path waits a Guardian, and a Gate. Crossing this threshold expands the Mage's mind to new applications of their abilities and power. Gate Level is the Caster Level for use of Desolation Magic. Desolation Mages begin at GL0 and progress overtime by using Bleakness. Their devotion to the path becomes evident with their use of their magic, and the application of it. The challenges the Gate Guardians issue, will be unique and different each time, but will always require a sacrifice of some sort.

    [Gateless Magic] -Cantrips

~ [Chaos Pulse] Bleakness XP: 100
The Desolation Mage has learned to channel the basic forces of Bleakness through their body. The action is extremely taxing upon them as the energy is still unstable, yet with various amounts of focus, the Mage can unleash a pulse of force from their hand, unleashing a small diluted pulse of Bleakness upon their enemy.

The mage focuses, creating a small ball of purple light within the palm of their hand, the size of a pea, or marble, with great effort. The effort and concentration causes them to sweat attempting to channel the energy outward to create a stable expression of the energies within themselves.

With a wave of their hand they cast the small ball outward, with an explosive force, that dissipates into a sonic, semi-visual wave of force. The pulse strikes unerringly and throws whatever creature struck it with staggering force. But having no effect on inanimate objects.

    Variation: Standard
As a Full Round Action that does not provoke Attacks of Opportunity, the mage may spend one point of Bleakness and unleash a Chaos Pulse upon their target. The Mage mages a Will Save +5, to determine the striking force. The creature is thrown back 10ft. The result of the Will Save, is then applied against the opponents CMD. If successful, the target is thrown an additional 5ft back. If the Save surpasses the targets CMD by 10 or more, the target is thrown back an additional 5ft, and is knocked prone. If the Save succeeds by 10 or more, the target takes Falling damage equal to the distance thrown. The Mage is sickened for 1 round after casting the spell, as the energy is still unstable in this form.

    Bleakness Cost: 1 Point
    Range: 20 ft
    Requires: 1 Free Hand

    Variation: Burst
As a Full Round Action that does not provoke Attacks of Opportunity, the mage may spend one point of Bleakness and unleash a Chaos Pulse upon their targets. The Mage mages a Will Save +5, to determine the striking force. The creatures are thrown back 10ft. with a 10ft burst, originating from the first target struck. This variation functions the same as a standard Chaos Pulse, however the exchange of energy staggers the mage for 1d4 rounds, and they take 1d3 points of Non-lethal Desolation Electric Damage from the back lash of the crudely formed energy.

    Bleakness Cost: 1 Point
    Range: 20 ft
    Blast Radius: 10 ft
    Requires: 1 Free Hand

    Variation: Acceleration
The mage has managed to learn how to apply her Chaos Pulse on the fly, but the energies used are only half formed and often can lead to unexpected and dangerous consequences with the lack of focus, and using the volatile energy carelessly.

[ Cast as a Standard Action ] - The Mage is thrown back from the sudden jolt of released energy and must succeed a DC15 Reflex Save or fall prone.

[Cast as a Move Action ] - The Mage takes 1d3+1 points of Non-lethal Desolation Electric Damage, is thrown back 5ft in addition to a DC15 Reflex Save. If failed, the mage falls prone and is stunned for 1 round.

[ Cast as a Swift Action ] - The mage unleashes a flash of force with a swift and unprepared burst of Bleakness. The Mage must make a DC10 Will Save, if failed, they suffer 1d8+Current Bleakness Point Total of Non-lethal Desolation Electric Damage in addition to being knocked prone. The Mage must also Succeed a DC10 Fort Save or begun to vomit violently for 1d3 rounds, preventing them from performing any action except for moving 5 ft in any direction while standing, this is not a 5ft Step.

[ Cast as an Immediate Action - Desolation Gambit ] - The mage casts Chaos Pulse with a +10 Bonus instead of +5. Throwing out a violent and uncontrolled blast of Desolation energy that also inflicts 2d8+2 points of Desolation Electric Damage to their target(s).

After the spell, the Mage must Succeed a DC15 Will Save. If failed, they are struck by 2d8+2 points of Desolation Electric Damage, and fall into a violent seizure upon the ground, rendered paralyzed for 1d8+2 Rounds. The Mage is permitted a DC15 Will Save, even if unconscious to resist the Desolation Recoil. If the mage does not succeed the Will Save while paralyzed, the mage is reduced to -10 Hit Points the round following the paralysis's duration. During the duration of the paralysis the mage's body emits a 10ft radius constant blast of 2d8+2 points of Desolation Electric Damage. This damage persists until the mage succeeds the Will Save, or the Duration of the paraylsis expires. This damage does not effect the mage, and this effect does not expire with the mage's death.

    **********************************************

    ~ [Chaos Pulse: Blade]
The Desolation Mage has learned greater control of her ability to control her Bleakness, forming it into a semi-physical blade of violet energy. With it she may strike at foes and objects with unnatural force and ferocity, cleaving away her enemies and the world around them. By pointing both her pointer and middle-finger outward on either hand, a 5 to 10ft blade of light is formed. A blade may be formed with either hand.
A Chaos Blade may strike enemies up to 10 ft away, as a weapon with the reach quality. Or may be used normally as a melee weapon without penalty. While the blade is formed, the Desolation Mage threatens 10 ft around herself. Creating the Sword is a Standard Action. While the blade is summoned the Mage must spend 2 points of Bleakness per additional round the blade remains in existence, or succeed a DC20 Will Save. Failing the Will Save causes the Chaos Blade to cause 'Fragmentation' for 1d6+1 Rounds. A Chaos Blade can be formed on either hand, and be used in Two Weapon Fighting, without penalty, but incurs separate Bleakness requirements per-round to maintain, in addition to separate Will Saves, per blade created.

    [ Strikes ]
The Chaos Blade ignores hardness of objects and deals 1d8+Wis or Int Modifier in Desolation Damage. As a Desolation Spell, the blade, while created, gains the benefits of Annihilation. Any Sunder attempts or Attacks resolve against the targets Touch AC or CMD (User's Choice). Sunder Attempts with a Chaos Blade gain an additional +1d8 Damage per Gate Level the Mage possesses. When an item is destroyed, the remaining damage is dealt to the creature, if the item is worn equipment. The user must decide the primary Ability Score the blade functions from upon creation which will determine their attack modifier used for calculating Hit Bonus for CMB and Attack Attempts.

    [ Chaos Focus ]
The Desolation Mage may pool together their Bleakness as a Full Round Action into a single blade. The mage may spend 1 additional point of Bleakness to reduce the DC of the blade's Will Save by 2. This only applies to the individual blade which was formed with Chaos Focus.

    [ Chaos Blade: Formation ]
    ~ (1 Bleakness) - Create Blade
~ (+1 Bleakness) - Create Blade (Swift Action)
    ~ (+1 Bleakness) - Extend Blade Blade - 10ft/GL (Swift Action)
    ~ (+5 Bleakness) - (Su:) Malediction (Swift Action) 1 Round/GL

    [First Gate Spells]

    Fragmentation I (Status)

The Desolation Mage has broken the Synchronization of their life energy, and the forces of Bleakness they channel. The very energy they summon and generate becomes poison within their veins, causing terrible damage to their body, wracking them with pain, as their flesh splits, and bleeds from wounds and lacerations that do not close. With each moment, the bleakness within them begins to burn their life energy. Slowly bringing them closer to death.

    Duration: (1d4+1) Rounds
Targeted Ability Score: (1d6) - Ability Score Damage Per Round (1d4+1)
Hit Point Damage: (1d4+1) Per Round
Bleeding: 1 Point Per Round (DC15 Heal)
(Condition): Dying - The mage cannot stabilize until bleeding has been stopped. Or a DC20 Fort Save
(Condition): Condemned - Upon an Ability Score reaching 0, the mage dies.
(Condition): Cursed - Ability Damage cannot be healed except by a Gate Guardian or Desolation Spells

    Tresk'ri-Chath: The WorldFire's Spirit

" He speaks in whisper. But speaks if you will listen. The will of Tresk'ri-Chath is absolute. Listen to his song. Listen to her whisper. Hear the balance of their raging spirit. Just. Righteous. Indifferent. Unbiased. Never shall you win their favor. Never shall you loose it. Call upon them as I have, and perhaps they may answer your call, if you would provide them but a small offering. They will not grant you mercy. Nor kindness. Only unaltered, unfiltered truth. Chance. Probability. Un-corruptible probability.... Call them, and be judged as you are."
    -Astrok'Ru

    Summoning:
The Desolation Mage may call out silently to call upon Tresk'ri-Chath. This may be done as a Movement Action or a Swift Action. (Roll 1d6 - on a 2, 4, or 6 the summoning succeeds) If The summoning succeeds the mage must pay 1 Bleakness. (A Mage may only attempt to Summon Tresk'ri-Chath Once per Turn)

Upon success, a deck of cards, made of flame encircles the Desolation Mage, granting a +10 Enchantment Bonus to AC, Saves, and Skill Checks. In addition the Mage cannot move while this effect is in effect, but they cannot take sustain damage from sources other then Desolation Damage, for 1d4 Rounds.

Draw: The Mage must draw a card randomly from the circle around her. Roll 1d6 On a 1,3, or 5 the mage is 'Scourged', and reduced to -1 Hit Points. On a 2, 4, or 6. The Mage gains a Blessing Card, which may be retained indefinitely until used. After a Draw has been performed, Tresk'ri-Chath is released, leaving the Mage with a Blessing Card or a Scourge.

Scourge (Status): The Desolation Mage has not found the favor of Tresk'ri-Chath, and instead been branded with a sigil. This Sigil bears the radiant burning sword-symbol of the deity. A Scourge grants the mage the ability to Draw an additional time while they bear the scar. However, if they are Scourged again within 24 hours of receiving a Scourge. The Desolation Mage is destroyed, their soul joining the infinite stream of the World-Fire. A blast 1d20x10ft Wide is released, in addition to dealing 10d6+Character Level+Gate Level x10 in Desolation Damage to all things caught within the blast. No save is permitted to half this damage. Creatures and objects struck must succeed a DC40 Reflex Flame or be ignited with World-Flame.

(World-Flame:Ignited (Status) World-Flame deals 2d10+10 Desolation Fire Damage to all things within 10ft of it, and cannot be extinguished. Anything that is dealt damage must succeed a DC40 Reflex Save or catch fire in World-Flame. Any creature who dies of damage from World-Flame's Damage is destroyed completely and their soul joins the infinite stream of the World-Fire. Creatures whose souls merge with The World-Fire cannot be resurrected by any means, nor journey to The Great Beyond.

    Blessings:
If the Desolation Mage possesses a Blessing Card, they may expend the card as a Free Action or Immediate Action at anytime. Using a card as an Immediate Action does not consume their next available Swift Action. They may convert the card into whichever blessing they have available from the following list.

Blessing Cards are not physical objects. They cannot be destroyed, dispelled, stolen or damaged. Blessing Cards are expended upon becoming a blessing.

Mother's Rebirth Blessing: - If the Desolation Mage would be killed they are not. If an event would kill the Desolation Mage, it is altered. If the Desolation Mage is killed, they are reborn. (This Blessing May be used after death, but grants a permanent 24 hour Scourged status, that will never expire.)

Tansal'ri's Blessing: If The Desolation Mage chooses, they may switch bodies with another creature or object. If the object is inanimate, it becomes animate. If the object is not sentient, it becomes sentient. If the object has no Ability Scores, the Desolation Mage's ability scores at the time of use are applied to the object. The Desolation Mage may revert back to any previous body they inhabited before the current one, at any time. Doing so reduces the object or creature's Hit Points to 0. (This penalty is applied to the Desolation Mage's original Body upon use.)

The Blessing of the Mother of the Black Veil: The Desolation Mage at any time, may spend this blessing. Doing so prevents the result of an event that has occured in the last 6 seconds from occurring. This Blessing re-writes the event, history, and the memories of it for everyone except those the Desolation Mage selects to retain memory of the event. If the event occurs anyways, the result cannot be the same.

" I see... so you've chosen that path as well. Great things... Terrible things lay in wait upon The Path. The Guardians, were once like you. Once men. Now they stand in eternal vigil, neither mortal nor divine. Neither living nor dead. Neither created, nor destroyed. Each Guardian is more guarded, more protective of their secrets then the last, but it is only by new vessels that their life-force. The Bleakness, may return to the world.... now you must choose... What Path will you walk?"

The world was covered in an orange haze. Both aflame, by some intangible energy, and burned...destroyed. It was a massive valley, perhaps beautiful once. Now only destruction, and a lifeless stillness and quite of a dead world waited in it's place.

The Magister rose from the hard, burnt earth. The sky was nothing more then a sunless haze. No stars, no orbs of light sat in the heavens above. Only the endless stream of unnatural semi-physical fire gave light to this dead place. This was without question... another plane. The knowledge filled her mind as her senses came to. A dead plane of existence. A place that neither existed, or ever was.... Or so the whispers said. She could not understand. Yet, a voice filled her mind. She was upon the ground. The sharp wooden twigs and harsh environment seemed to have no effect upon her body. She could not 'feel' the ground. Only its existence, as a surface. She could 'feel' the blackened earth. Only see its presence. A voice spoke out. Both physically and through her mind. She looked up to see a strange knight. Clad in what appeared to be some strange sky-metal alloy, and red cloaked talbard.

" ...Welcome, young one. To the Vally of the Risen. The First Gate. I am The Gatekeeper. You have come here by your own violation. Commanded that which is not your own. Abused forces you do not understand, with little question. As I have allowed it. As I have laid in silence, watching.... "

The knight flipped through an infernal series of face-less cards. The spun about him in a dizzying motion. Before beginning to speak, in his muffled metallic voice once more.

" ...The forces you command are no toy. Not a simple parlor trick to be abused by some lackluster child of some lesser arcane tradition. So now I ask you; ' Why have you come here?'

"If you've no intention of following The Path, then relinquish your Soul Shard to me now, and you may leave, without further delay. It is your time you spend. I've all eternity to wait. But your body does not. If you wish to return. You will answer my question. Or leave the Shard with me. "

"That depends," Eris says to the strange voice in her head as she picks herself off the ground, "on what the price I have to pay will be."

Looking up at the crimson-clad knight, Eris takes a moment to think. 'Soul Shard'? I was right then, I did get one of the fragments mentioned in the memory he gave me. And it seems like this will be the fate that awaits me should I fail to control its power...but I need to know more before I can choose anything. No matter how much power it is, it's pointless if it costs me my self!

Reaching that conclusion, she finally responds aloud to the Guardian, sounding resolved, as if she was in control of the situation. "So, I am separated from my physical body then? I'll have to be brief. I'm here because I need to become stronger. But knowledge is power, and right now, I do not know enough. Tell me about this soul shard and the power it gives me. I can't believe that the only price I must pay is as simple as being careful not to let this...'Bleakness'," she uses the word her knowledge of the Desolation Magic supplied her, "overwhelm me. If I walk this 'Path of Desolation' what will I lose?"

    The knight waits patiently letting her finish before replying;

" You know what the Soul Shard is. If the matter the matter is understanding, rather then knowing, and care little for such trivialities. I collect the shards, from those easily-shaken few like yourself. Collect them, that in time. I may be reborn as I choose. To attain Ascendance. But you are no Guardian, and this choice was my own. Naturally. This means. I am not your friend. Naturally, this means. I will do everything in my power to make your turn over that shard to me..... But as I am charged with this duty. I am not permitted to tell any Lie.

The Path, is not such a simple thing. I know not what you will loose. What you will gain. How much, or how greatly you will suffer.... Do you see a 'path' here? A place for a leisurely stroll? Do you see a massive iron 'gate'? Blocking your path. No.... here. It is just you.... and I.

Whatever fate you will find will be the one of your own making. Neither I, nor any force can set a predetermined path you shall walk. I, nor any force, can determine what you are willing to sacrifice.

...But a sacrifice must be made. To create that power within the world you dwell, something else must be unmade. For Desolation does not exist. It is brought into creation by your own will and deeds. Though learning to control the energies of our Bleakness can you tap into the very forces that unmake existence, and reshape it... And just as their is no answer to your query. There is no Truth. Only choice....

    Now... Why have you come?"

Having her answer, or at least enough of one to make her choice, she looks completely sure of herself as she says, "I'm hear to learn how to use this power and follow The Path."

The man's expressionless features don't hide his evident irritation, but still he speaks in the same unchanged metallic voice.

" ...I see. Yet you are here because, to at-least to some minor degree you have learned to control this energy.

There await you, 10 Gates. and 10 Guardians. To count myself. Each seeks to claim your Shard. Each seeks to dissuade you. For the stronger you shard becomes, the greater it's value. Each bares a different curse. My own, being incapable of telling a falsity.

You may gain knowledge of Desolation by paying tribute to a Guardian. Each Guardian has their own rules. Their own code, what they are willing to accept as payment. For what you give is remade in part into the forces you may exercise. And the rest? ....That is our fee. That with enough, we may forge shards ourselves.

To unlock a gate. Is to proceed down The Path. Where and what you wll find, I cannot know. For your choices will determine such fate. Issue a Guardian a Challenge, and you will face their Crucible. Something may be lost. Something may be gained, in both success or failure. You may attempt the Crucible as many times as you dare.

...Or you may seek to exchange something for another. And I may grant you abilities, forces, to shape and change your methods of controlling your Bleakness. Spells of Desolation within the bounds of your ability. But as of now... you are a Gateless vagrant, and your Shard is worth little. I pass my Crucible and the First Gate will be open. From which I may make exchanges for such spells. But for now, you may only refine what little you have. At a price."

Incapable of lying? I can live with that if that's what this power up costs me. Though I wonder if it's truly that simple? I suppose I'll just have to find out. Nodding to herself, she waits for him to finish his explanation, "Then, I challenge you, Guardian. What is this Crucible of yours?"

Her words seem to catch the knight off guard. There is a moment of silence. After a short while he speaks. "...Are you certain? If so I will accept your challenge, but a wager must be made. A wager not of your choosing, but of chance..."

He raises up his hands, holding 4 cards in each. They were faceless flat rectangles of flame.

"You will pick, and the cards will decide your wager. Then I shall do the same. If you win said wager, the victor will take the spoils, and the looser will be bound, forced to pay, willing or not. Should you win. My Gate will be open to you, for all time. Should you fail. I will take your wager, and you may try again when you are better prepared....assuming of course, you are still capable. "

" The stakes of a challenge are much higher then that of an exchange, and inherently. The cards will choose something of great value. Nor I or you will know what that 'something' is, until after your choice is made. Once made, it cannot be unmade, not the challenge reclined.... and I will be forced to choose as well. "

" If you accept... If there is nothing you fear. Then pick, a card. From left to right, They are 1 to 8. Speak a number, and your Challenge will be accepted...."

The Knight was obviously quite hesitant himself to initiate the duel of wills. There seemed to be more to this then she had thought.

There's more to this than he's telling me...but with everything that's happened...I need more power. Anxious though she is, and certainly not fearless, the temptation proves too much to resist for the young Abyssal Apostle. My Lady Nocticula, please grant your servant the power she needs to overcome this trial so that I may be of more use to you and the world.

With her silent prayer complete, she gathers her wits and points a finger toward the far right card. "I pick number eight."

Her breath short and her limbs seem to drain of energy as the words leave her lips, though she does her best not to let the fear that she's made a grave mistake overcome her and she does her best to look composed.

He nods silently. He draws Card Number (1d7)[7]

The 8th card spins from his hand and materializes in her own. He holds up a black paper playing card into the air laughing. "...Hahaha. I Wager. Nothing!"

Eris looks as the flames die away and reveal a picture with a bloody heart pierced by an arrow. and a Waning moon. The knight puts down his hand... their's a moment of silence....

A voice fillers her mind. A soft motherly voice, gentle and whispy like the breeze of a windy summer day upon the beach.

"...And so you shall wager your years, your strength, and Vitality. Courageous are you who takes me up. Fearless are you who bare me. I will take from you, the strength of your body. Your heart, and you shall grow frail and weak. You shall live... but for but a short while longer. For the fall of two moons. And upon the third sunrise shall I embrace you as my own. "

    Card: The DeathKnell
The creature's Constitution Ability Score is reduced to 1 instantly. Granting a -5 Modifer which is applied to the creatures Hit Point Total per Hit Die they possess. The creature is left in such a frail state, while they are conscious and able to act and perform normally, though in a weakened state, they will only live for 2 days upon the Curse's initiation, dying instantly upon the beginning of the first hour of the 3'ed day.

( This Effect Cannot be Altered or removed except by a Gate Guardian )

"...The cards have been revealed. I cannot recede the Challenge now."

An icy fear grips her heart, the anxiety she'd felt as she declared her choice finally taking a tangible form, "No..." She puts a hand to her breast, her breathing, already shallow, now growing quick and unsteady. "No...No, I won't lose. Not here. I won't!"

Glaring at the Guardian, "What's the Challenge?"

" I'm a simple man. This Crucible is one of chance...."

6 Cards floated before him, like a screen.

" Ein (1) , Ze (2), Lo (3), Re (4), Kel (5), Rz (6)... Each card represents a number. The cards will randomly choose a Number. You may choose to select Odds or Evens, and I will choose the opposite. Or you may Select 3 Numbers independently. In addition, You may choose to draw a second Wager Card before we begin, if you choose to pick numbers independently, allowing you a fourth pick. "

" I have the same option, but as I've nothing to loose... I shall refrain from that...The game will begin immediately after you have made you choice, and the cards will revel, whatever they shall reveal."

" This is Sudden-Death... One match will determine the victor. Now choose."
