Default Living in a Fairy Tale (IC)

Once upon a time, there was a peculiar land called Märchen, which was composed of a poorly planned governmental structure relying largely on a chain of constitutional monarchies supported by a surprisingly high-morale working class. In this land the skies were always sunny, except for the occasional atmospheric stormy weather which signified that a princess was likely undergoing dramatic emotional turmoil. Monsters roamed the uncivilized lands, and magic seeped through cracks in the earth and sky. But these were not the concerns of the common folk, who baked bread and offered pertinent wisdom to those who inquired. These are the concerns of the heroes. The heroes who seem to shine with unique charisma as a beacon of inspiration to those in times of need. There are always people in need, and there's always work for a hero to do. These days in particular, everyone seems to have a problem because everything seems to be going wrong, and the general outlook is rather Grimm.

Every kingdom has an annual gala, as a symbol that all is well in the world and to keep the public in high spirits. Of course, there are over fifty kingdoms in about a thousand miles square (each kingdom is pretty much a big castle and the surrounding few miles of villages) which means there are galas held somewhere in the country every week or so. Many an aspiring Bard makes a living mapping out the arrangements and trekking from castle to castle to live the high life and hopefully get noticed at such an event. The frequency of these parties means that really, only a few villages come under the limelight at any given time, and the focus sweeps across the country as different tales are told.

As such, there's little rhyme or reason to where a story begins, so long as there's something to do there. This story begins in one such village, on the eastern side of Märchen, a village of thatch-roofed cottages and open cobblestone streets. To the northwest of the village, just a little closer than the horizon, is the castle which is in the final stages of preparation for its gala in one week's time. More directly west is an expanse of farmlands, while to the south and southwest of the continent is a deeply forested domain. Not far to the east is the ocean, and this village makes much of its business with the seafood trade. Of prominent note in this village is the bakery, the fishery, the tavern, the library, and the church. For the villagers, work carries on as normal, though more than a few faces seem to hold their share of stress and anxiety. A Halfling in a constable's uniform patrols the streets, making inquiries at merchants of building supplies and looking dejected each time. A strong-armed Goliath sits ponderously on a bench, tapping his cleft chin. A thin Elf in clothes finer than anyone else nearby is wringing his hands and inquiring at a tailor's shop. There are likely more fellows in need should buildings be investigated and questions asked, but these are a few which would stand out to any passers-by. Not that there are any of note, or anything like that.

Garret entered the village with a sigh of relief. It had not been long since he left home, leaving his mom and younger brothers to take care of the farm, but he was quite happy now that his journey had finally begun. At long last, he was on the journey he had been desiring for years, in order to make something of himself. Now he just needed directions towards the inn, and maybe he'll learn something of interest in the process.

Noticing a particularly large person sitting on a bench nearby, he decided to approach. "Howdy, sorry to bother ya, but I just came in from outta town," He said, explaining himself. "Do ya know where I can find an inn?"

Catfolk with panther like features pads down the street towards the Goliath and the obvious stranger. Dark, sleek fur and hair, with a more narrow, square face, and despite the trend for long braids, Sair tends to keep his hair short, as he found braids caused trouble while sneaking around, which was one of his favorite past times. All of this put together means most other catfolk tend to make jokes about him looking very feminine (at least by catfolk standards, although most other races probably wouldn't notice much. He does not appear to wear armor (unless of course you happen to be using a true seeing spell). He seems to be wearing a simple outfit made of high quality fabric primarily colored in dark greys and deep purples. He does carry weapons though. A dagger at his left hip, and a spiked chain coiled at his right. He wears a single amethyst earring in his right ear, and a small silver loop in his left, and a ring on each hand.

He stops near the tailors shop and eves drops on the elf for a while. He also takes a moment to fiddle with the door of the tailor's shop, and even with the racial differences, most people would notice the mischievous grin he is trying, and failing to hide.

Holly had entered the town as the official emissary for Irontree. She was supposed to have an escort, but had already rode ahead. The lazy idiots would have slowed her down so much she wouldn't even be on time for the gala. And they had left two weeks early. Admittedly, that one was because she heard the princess of this kingdom was a beauty.

That's when she saw some halfling making rounds and asking about building supplies.

Hmmm. He looks official. He's asking about building supplies. Maybe he wants tarps and such for the gala. Hmmm. Helping him out would be the right thing to do, and make a good first impression with the princess.

Is something the matter sir? Holly asked approaching the halfling.

    Fátima Almeida do Castelo

Fátima leaves the village's library, yawning and blinking at the sun's light. Wow, it is bright out here; how long as she been in there? Several hours, at least; she'd have pulled an all-nighter with those books if she wasn't so tired yesterday from traveling. Instead, she just had to get there first thing in the morning. The smell of old books is just intoxicating.

She spends a moment to look around and hide her messy auburn hair underneath a flamboyant headscarf. The gala in the kingdom is the best chance to share and learn new stories, especially with the other Lyrists who invariably gather at each kingdom's gala. She heard Wilhelm had found a long-lost document explaining an interesting story about a prince and his white doe, and she'd like to hear this story for herself. On the way to every gala, she likes stopping in the outlying villages like this one, so she has first access to the stories and the life of the small-town villagers and travelers.

She looks around. Right, there's her horse, with her hawk resting on top. Both are intimidating and watchful enough to scare away theives from her things. She walks up to her horse and hawk, and smiles. "Come on, Eleonora, Lusitan. Let's see what interesting stories we can find today."

Fátima leads her horse through the streets, looking for people interesting enough to write about in her journal that night. She spies a halfling constable, and the half-elf female knight, Holly. Hey, this looks interesting. She stops walking, to watch the red-headed knight's interactions with the halfling.

"Ho HO!" the Goliath chuckles, looking up from his musing state and standing to meet Garret. This enormous figure is tall and physically imposing, but not actively threatening. He seems to have the same hard skin as most Goliaths, but unlike most his skin is smooth rather than craggy. Most remarkable for a male of his species is that he has hair on his head, black and quite a lot of it, down to his shoulders.
"Washed in from the boonies, are we? Well you've come to a good place, friend. Wide fields, beautiful women, good food and plenty of it. You look like a respectable man who can appreciate the simple pleasures of life. Come on, I've sat here long enough already. If you're looking for the inn I'll take you there, and we'll have a bite. You have formidable tricepts; do you do dips? You lift?"
The Goliath keeps yammering about exercises as stomps down the street, glancing back every now and again to make sure Garret's still there. A few blocks down you two reach a wider, two-story building. The Goliath ducks to get in and waves to the bartender, a Dwarf who gives him a smile in return.
"Barkeep! Two spears of mutton! Give me my usual ale, and something for the boy to put a little more hair on his chest. He looks like he could use it, ha!"

Sair's Listen check is definitely good enough to hear the conversation. He also manages to lock the door, but the fancily-dressed Elf seems to be having a fairly long conversation. He'll notice the door when he leaves, probably.

    --------------------------------------------------

The muttering Halfling officer crosses off something, presumably a name on a list, on a notepad and looks at the clouds. He jumps slightly at Holly's approach, having been lost in thought.
"Oh er, thank you for your concern, but no, it's nothing that..." He pauses, looking over Holly's impressive armor and general stature. She looked like she could get things done.
"Well, I s'pose I'm not getting anywhere on m' own. But then again, I don't know if you can really help. You're from out of the area, eh? So you might not really have noticed it. But the agricultural industries in the west have been hitting hard times as of late. They're nearing harvest season, but the crop keeps getting blown away by these freak winds. I've been commissioned to contract some builders to fortify the area, create some windbreaks, y'know, but no one's up for the job. And there's the issue of materials. I have a cousin who works in the logging district further south, and he says that even their shelters are having the same issue with not standing up to the windstorms and the felled logs are rolling away. My other cousin works the quarries with the Dwarves, and he's been hunkered in alright with little complaint. But if the wheat is lost to the wind, there won't be enough for the winter or to store for planting next spring. I just don't know what to do about it..."

"Thank ya sir, I mightly appreciate it. Name's Garret, by the way." Garret said with a smile as they began to walk, keeping pace with the Goliath, glad to have met someone friendly. "Eh, most of the muscle comes from doing most of the labor back on the farm. I'm the eldest, so I had to do all the real heavy lifting. Though I did do some exercises, just to make sure I always win if I get into a playful scuffle with one of my brothers." He explained with a nostalgic smile on his face as they came to the bar.

"Howdy." Garret called to the barkeep as he and the Goliath entered.

Holly's face falls for the briefest of instances.

Damn, No way the princess will be hearing about this. She then slightly shrugs and her smile picks back up.

Ah well helping people is it's own reward. Do you know what is causing the freak wind storms. Such as a beast, or spell? She asks the halfling.

As for stopping the damage. Have you considered ironwood?

Confident in his trick, and knowing it'll come into it's own eventually, but not hearing anything that particularly interests him, 'Sair wanders off. He does catch the words "inn" and decides to pad along some distance between the Goliath and the young human. When they get to the bar, he slips inside and finds a corner table to sit at while he watches them.

    Fátima

Fátima, still standing off and away from Holly, turns towards her hawk so that the knight and the halfling are still in her eyesight so she can know when they're done; and she strokes the bird. "Who's a pretty bird?" she whispers, straightening a feather.

With only casually paying attention to the conversation, a thought sticks out in Fátima's mind: Ironwood. She turns her eyes back towards the knight, and squints. No way. What are the chances of this? Memories of when she was younger, stuck in a room learning about the other kingdoms and their royalty and nobility come back to mind. Recognition flashes in her mind. She's a princess. No way. Wow. This is a story in the making.

"Eleonora," she says again to her bird, "What do you think? Would you listen to the story about the princess who saves the day?" The bird, of course, makes a chwirk sound because that's what birds do.

With the village square rapidly emptying out by the time Liselle reached it, she glanced between Holly and her Halfling and Fatima. Well, all she needs is someone who might have seen her quarry pass, so she elects to approach the woman talking to her animals.

    "What a fascinating bird..."

A certain... ah, 'interest'... in birds seemed to be something rather deeply ingrained in the catfolk mind. So much so that when stopping by to interrogate someone, she still couldn't help but comment upon it...

True, the meaning of her comment probably wasn't obvious. Liselle concealed her species under a full-length travelling cloak with the hood pulled far over her face. It was definitely an outfit that just screamed LOOK AT MEEEEEE! Not least because she had eschewed the traditional black for one in a riot of bright colours. And she'd added a lot of cheap-looking jewellery over the outside.

Point was, people looking at the outfit was what she wanted. People looking at her face, not so much. She had a part to play, and that part didn't involve fur. Or tails.

"Ah, my apologies. I had a question for you, Madam. Did you, by any chance, see a black-furred cat man passing this way? I am sure he came through here..."

Of course, the implication there is that she'd used her mystical, mystical powers to follow Nemissair's trail. The rather more prosiac truth is she'd been following a trail of people he'd pranked along the route. He did rather tend to make his passage obvious...

"Well, can't fault you on that one! There's many a gay time to be had with a playful scuffle between bold men, and don't you forget it!" The Goliath sets into his spear of mutton, tearing off pieces from the skewer with vigor.
"What brings you into town, Gur'et? You're a ways from home by the sound of it, and you plan to stay in the tavern. Here for the royal party? My fiancée and I are PUMPED! A chance to show off to the whole kingdom. How glorious!"
    The Dwarf bartender looks up.
"Gol-Stone, did you say the young'n's after a room?"
"Aye, or so he said to me. Gur'et, Halsey's the man to talk to if you want a room. Reasonable rates, and the food's good quality."
"There's also plenty of room. The treasure hunters and looters have slowed lately. I made enough to expand the inn, but I was hoping on the cash flow not dryin' up."
"I blame you for encouraging them, Halsey. It's thanks to you that Ihana's concerned herself with the castle."
"And the only thing better than the lure of a treasure-heavy castle is the lure of a treasure-heavy castle with a beautiful woman to accompany you! Give her my thanks, Gol-Stone." the Dwarf snorts, returning to dishwashing.

    -------------------------

"Wind is wind, is it not? I've seen no beasts with massive wings to blow our crops away. If it's a curse cast upon us, well, I'm afraid it's a bit more than I can handle. I hope it hasn't come to that."
The Halfling constable raised an eyebrow incredulously.
"Aye, Ironwood you say? I'll look into it. In the meanwhile I'll probably make do by wishing for a wall of diamond to grow from the earth and cover the wheat. That's a more feasible solution I'd say, considering that at the very least I've seen a diamond in my life. Ironwood's the stuff of stories, and not very good ones. They say that only a master of the spirits of the forest can create it, and I know of none such spirit. Apart from the one. And we aren't about to get a favor out of her."

Garret said to the two as he began to chow into his own spear of mutton with just as much vigor. "To be honest, I just left a home a few weeks ago, on ah journey to make a name for myself."

"But enough about me, what's this about the castle? Are they having trouble?" He asked, pausing from eating his mutton to think for a second. "And what are the royals here like?"

Fátima turns to Liselle. "Oh, thanks. She's a pretty smart bird."

"I...um, er," She tries to think back to if she saw a black cat-man. Maybe she did see him out of the corner of her eye? But, thinking back, he seemed to have been wandering with no specific goal in particular. That probably means he didn't really have a specific thing to do, so, logically...where would travelers go who are coming through a town like this? Either the church or the tavern. "I think I saw him, but I don't know where he was going. As a guess, I'd say either the tavern or the church, as that's where most people go."

"I wish you luck finding him,"
Fátima adds. As great it would be to go along with this paradoxical person who both draws attention to herself and tries to hide and find out what story she has with the black cat-man, staying here to find out what this princess is up to is much better.

"Ha HA! He has luck, if not brains, to choose at random the finest village of the finest stock in the land!" Gol-Stone chortles. "What name will you make for yourself, Gur'et? I'm afraid Strongest Man in the Kingdom is taken in these parts, but perhaps you would be satisfied with second?"
The Goliath returns to his mutton, while the bartender Halsey gets out a notepad.
"Aye, I can do you for a room. Our normal traveler's rate is three silver coins a night, though if you reserve a room for the week I can let it go for fifteen silver total. With folks due to come in for the gala I usually double the costs in the final week to keep up with the demand, but you've lucked out and got in just under the wire. 'Sides, friends of Gol-Stone do well around here."
The Dwarf writes out Garret's receipt, and gets a solid brass key from a cupboard below the bar.
"Do it, Gur'et, stay the week! Stay for the gala, and see the sights. Enough of Halsey's tourist trap. You're lucky enough to steer clear of trouble."
"Hehe, or lucky enough to finally find that treasure, eh?" the bartender grins, eyes glinting. "The castle you see to the northwest of town isn't the first one the kingdom's had. Through the southern forest, a few miles to the east of the loggers' base, there's a run-down ruin of this kingdom's first castle. It's been in a state of disarray for decades, longer than I've lived here, and no one knows who used to own it or what happened to them. Now, you might think whoever owned it left and took their stuff with 'em, as a normal folk would do? But the castle's still fully furnished. And that leads me to think that whatever's in the holds is still down there. So why hasn't it been snatched up yet? There have been explorers there to check out the castle. Well, that's because the castle itself doesn't want you to have it! What they say is that the stones roll and the floors shake. In the right light, the chairs and the tables and the clocks and the candlesticks all seem to move around. When the castle itself is trying to shoo off intruders, well, most intruders get shooed! But that ain't even the worst of it! No, very rarely, maybe every five or ten explorations or so, they say that a ferocious-"
"HALSEY! The kid's heard enough of your rumors and hearsay. Lost treasure? Walking rocks? The castle has no will, and it has no coin left in its walls. Let the earth reclaim it, and let those stones return to the mountain. Gur'et, you'd do well to stay away from the castle. And if you should see my fiancée Ihana, you tell her the same. That woman gets far too excited by Halsey's tall tales. Tall tales from a short man, HA!"

    Holly mused.

Perhaps I could talk to the nature spirit. Maybe she would respect my elven heritage. She replied.

But. If that didn't work, what would you think would be your backup option.

"Talk t' the spirit of the forest? Why, to find her would be a lifetime's pursuit, and if the legends are true then that lifetime would come to an end if you did! Besides, if the spirit of the forest is as formidable a guardian of nature as they say she is, well, she might not really be on our side when it comes to the logging industry chopping down the trees to make room for the expansion of the farmlands. Seems an awful long way to go for Ironwood that may or may not even exist. I think I'm better off wishing for that wall of diamond. In the meanwhile I've been walking the nearby towns like I said, seeing if I can find builders who can set up windbreaks. It's not a great solution, but if we can put off the problem until after the harvest it'll do.

You say many strange things, though, miss. You speak of legends as though they are true, and you did not so much as bat an eye at the idea of finding a legendary spirit. Where do you hail from? And what purpose do you have here? If I didn't know better, I'd say you were some kind of a hero...

"Has anyone lost their pet? Speak up! My lionskin carpet has seen better days, and I could do with the replacement. If no one's going to call in on it, I'll give it a head start before returning to the hunt!"
Gol-Stone's remarks are met with middling amounts of amused laughter, mostly from the older, drunken patrons. It looks like Catfolk aren't highly respected here, if even recognized.
"Well as I was sayin', every so often there are reports of explorers who narrowly escaped with their lives after fleeing from a monstrous-"
"Halsey, my good man, I thought we'd decided we'd had enough of your stories! By all means let the stray wander the woods if he pleases, if he's so curious. Meanwhile, manly men like myself and Gur'et will be sharpening up for the gala. Say, Gur'et, you're a woodsman. I expect you've hunted for game, yes? How about for sport? There's a world of difference between pursuing a fat doe in the brush for her meat, and facing a wide-antlered buck in his prime. If you stop by my home later I can show you my trophies."
The Dwarf Halsey shakes his head.
"You're a man of the world for sure, Gol-Stone. And you're right, there's no need for me to go on about that silly old castle. What do I know anyway? I've told everything I know to the tourists, or to those like Ihana. There's nothing more you could learn from me that you couldn't learn in the library." Halsey shrugs, trying to catch Sair's eye.

"Why thank you for your assistance, Miss." Liselle couldn't help but notice that Fatima's attention wasn't directed towards her, and it didn't take a genius to follow her gaze and notice who held it.

So Liselle set out for the Tavern (working on the assumption that Nemissair was far more likely to be pranking the drinkers than bothering typically-humourless librarians). But she made sure her route across the square allowed her to brush past Holly on her way out.

"I think you've picked up an admirer!" A quiet whisper into Holly's ears as the catfolk walked by. Of course, anyone other than Holly would have sworn nothing was said - Liselle didn't even glance in Holly's direction as she passed!

    Yay, petty abuse of Telepathy!

And on to the Tavern. (Unless Holly or Fatima sees the need to try and stop her leaving... Can't see why they would, though. They have a halfling to keep them entertained )

"Garret." He said with a friendly smile as he shook Sair's hand. "Anyways, I think I will stay for the week, the ball sounds quite exciting, and I'm real thankful for the deal you're giving me." He then handed the necessary coinage to Halsey, a grateful smile upon his face.

It was then he heard Gol-stone go off on Sair, and he frowned. He had acted so friendly before, but he guessed that behind that there was some inner unpleasantness. In any case, the castle sounded interesting, and he kinda wanted to check it out, but that didn't mean he could part on unfriendly terms with Gol-stone. "Sure, I'll come by sometime this week and we can go hunting."

    Yay telepathy!

"Anytime," Fátima says as parting words. Yes, she definitely should have paid more attention to the person who was underneath the cloak rather than just looking at the cloak itself; would've been interesting, for sure. But things don't just happen by chance!

Now, free to think for herself instead of conversing and trying to remember, the story hunter starts to think through what she'll say as soon as the princess is done with the Constable. She'll need the right words, of course; saying the wrong thing at the wrong time just turns you out on the street with nothing gained.

(I see no reason to have Fátima stop Liselle, so she doesn't)

Holly follows the cloaked figured gait as she passes and whispers to her ear.

She then chuckles as she processes what the cloaked figured said.

With no interruptions to stop her leaving the square, Liselle continued on until she found the Tavern. Instead of entering (generally a poor idea, for one of several reasons), she found a nice spot outside that wasn't directly viewable from inside. This meant she couldn't see the people inside, true, but didn't interrupt her mindsight even a little bit. 45' range was far enough to 'spot' most (or all) of the people inside from her position leaning against the wall, and what she was looking for inside was a familiar mind.

And she could have picked it out of the crowd, quite literally, with her eyes closed.

Nemissair hisses at remark about cellar rats, and when the lionskin carpet is mention his hand drifts under the table and toward his dagger. He is about to do something truly unwise when that voice speaks in his mind. He reminds himself that revenge is a dish best severed cold, and that he'll have plenty of time to get back at this... brute. Perhaps by sneaking into his home and messing with his precious trophies. So many options...

But in the meantime, he is much ore curious about this castle, and more importantly what treasures in might hold.

"You are clearly a busy man, Master Halsey. Perhaps I shall go read some of these 'fantastic' stories at the local library"

He nods to the dwarf, and then the human, "Mr. Garret," The he bow mockingly to the Goliath. "Until we see each other again. Or at least..." Sair scoops up Gol-stone's 2nd spear of mutton, "Until I next see you."

Then he twist the ring on his left hand, and vanishes. [Activates Ring of Invisibility]. Though I presume no one can see it, he carefully makes his way through the room and back out the door, and starts looking around for a familiar face.

On spotting Liselle, he does not reappear, but doew whisper in her ear ""Library" before padding off to find just that.

Sadly, while Liselle can track Nemissair coming and going (invisibility doesn't block mindsight), the fact that he didn't stop totally killed her chance to make weight loss jokes about his new-found invisibility. For that, some form of revenge would have to be taken.

Nemissair: "So what were you sneaking away from this time?"

While she listened for a responsive thought from Nemissair, she'd also follow his path to the library from a few meters behind.

After getting a couple of streets away, Sair deactivates his ring, and wait for his shadow to catch up. When she does, he falls into step beside her.

"I wasn't sneaking this time. I was showing off." He munches on the mutton spear as they walk.

"So how long have you been following me. I hope you're not too upset over my little joke with your camp chair. I did leave you some recompense after all."

"My word, a proper hero? I say, well, I half expected so, considering your...stature. That's impressive, certainly. But...well, can even a hero stop the weather? Well of course, I don't mean to tell you your job. If there's anything we can do for you, either should you choose to aid us in our plight or if you have other duties to attend to, it would be my honor to be of assistance. "

    --------------------

"You ought to do! Show up and I'll teach you that there's more than one way to skin a cat!" Gol-Stone chortles. He looks back at the table. "Oh, ran off with his tail between his legs, no doubt. And with your meat, no less! I don't know where those moggies come from, but the land will be better when they're where they belong. With a collar around their neck at best, or underfoot at worst. A beast is a beast, and you can't be expected to try to reason with an animal like that. They just don't have the capacity for sapient thought, not like you or I."
    Gol-Stone shrugs.
"But yes, feel free. My home isn't hard to find, it's only down the road. It's also the only building in the village with a 9-foot door frame, so. I look forward to your company, Gur'et!"
With that, Gol-Stone leaves the tavern and heads off somewhere else.

    ---------------------------

The library in the village is a thin, three-story cylindrical building made of brick, fairly unlike the rest of the wood and thatch cottages. Entering inside, the two Catfolk are nodded to indifferently by an Elf at the desk. There's a spiral staircase leading to the higher floors. The library is largely empty save for a single woman rummaging through the shelves on the second floor, though you can see her even from here. Her hair is cut short, and she wears a functional vest with innumerable pockets, as well as a satchel on her back and loops of rope at her hip. She looks highly equipped for perhaps a dungeoneering mission, but the thing that's most striking about her is, to be blunt, her stunning beauty. Something about her stature and form is enchanting, though it's difficult to put your thumb on it. Although she appears human, a vaguely celestial countenance marks her (to those who would be aware of such things) as an Aasimar.

The first question. I'm assuming the answer is yes, but is the royalty aware of the problem? Holly mused putting a finger to her lips, and heading in the direction of the castle.

Garret nodded to Gol-stone s he left, and waited a full minute before rushing out of the tavern and heading towards the library as fast as he could. It didn't take him too long until he reached his location, on account of his many years of running laps around his village as an exercise. Pausing for a second to catch his breath, he then walked into the library, looking around for the catfolk male.

"Oh good, I managed ta catch up." Garret said when e spotted him, now in the company of another catfolk. He was just about to approach them when he spotted the beauty up on the second floor, and paused. "...whoa." He said quietly in a soft voice.

Oh! This is maybe the perfect chance to interject into the conversation and draw her presence out. So, she calls out in Elven, so that Holly can definitely hear her. «Your Royal Highness!» she calls out, «If there is a nature spirit causing this, then maybe we can learn more about her in the town's library.»

There. Now, here's to hoping that it wasn't a wrong thing to say.
