Default [4E] By the Books - Out of Character Thread

So here's our thread everyone. The sheets I have so far are:

    In-Character Thread

    XP: 110 each

    Rolls Thread

I'll keep this thread updated with XP totals and a link for the in-character thread once we get it started. Also, I would appreciate a bit more personality and backstory on anyone who doesn't have anything about them on their sheet. It helps me know what kind of character to expect and motivate once we start.

I was wondering sakuuya, maybe our characters' backgrounds, so far being the only female humans in the party can combine in some way. Perhaps Lirre has always been in contact with the Darkwoods and has a close family friendship with them? Maybe Johan through circumstances helped Lirre in some way in her becoming a paladin of the Raven Queen? She had been in touch and occasionally doing odd jobs with the Darkwoods since. At the time when Johan and Jessica were captured you were doing an errand at Winterhaven for them and was supposed to meet them there but they got captured somehow along the way. Of course when she found out that Jessica escaped she immediately went to Treona's Tower rather than the planned raid on Gorizbadd. Given that Lady Treona is a sage and better mentor than her in regards to training and developing Jessica, it is agreed that Jessica is allowed to stay in Treona's Tower and is hired by Treona herself to keep the two together since they are family. Since then Lirre has been doing odd jobs for Treona and checking up on Jessica from time to time.

Recently Treona needed Jessica to get a component from Winterhaven from the sage Valthrun. So she sent you and Jessica there to retrieve it, and also to get Jessica out of the Tower and give her a break from her studies. With the component retrieved and after a few days of rest and relaxation, the two are headed back to the Tower.

What do you think? Maybe you could add to this? Of course it is up to you how you play your character and background. Just throwing out ideas.

Ok, sorry folks! This week has been super busy. I've got a build thrown together here, and I'll have the backstory up tomorrow. But quick version, Ekemon is a tiefling tax collector that secretly aided a rebellion to overthrow the tyrannical baron. But during the battle, the one person that knew of his involvement was killed. Known only as the evil, creepy tiefling that intimidated the good folk into forking over their money for the crown, the masses wanted him burned at the stake. He luckily escapes execution, and now travels the lands in search for knowledge.

    Spoiler: 10 Minute Background
    Show
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!

    1. A former money collector in a tyrannical barony, Ekemon is extremely sharp when it comes to numbers, and is skilled in coercion and intimidation.

    2. Ekemon's bloodline is from an ancient tiefling house that was cursed with ill luck. He is, as far as he knows, the last of his line, the others having succumbed to their blood curse in some horrific way or another. So far, Ekemon has been able to keep himself in the world of the living, mostly through honeyed words and quick thinking. He believes he has some facility in dampening the curse through an effort of will. Otherwise, bad luck seems to strike when he is around.

    3. He is of average height, with a relatively slim build. His skin is a deep red, and his eyes are solid gold orbs. Two slender horns spiral toward the back of his skull and back toward his face, the points facing forward. Ekemon typically tries to dress in finery, but while he is adventuring he sports traveling leathers and a short sword.

    4. Ekemon has no friends. Most people tend to distrust him right out due to his heritage, and his job as the baron's money collector only compounded the hate the people had for him. A lonely existence, but a relatively safe and stable one. Ekemon spent most of his time reading on history and practicing his numbers and learning languages. His only acquaintance was a secret, and died during the rebellion that ousted the baron.

    5. Ekemon enjoys his time to himself. He finds most people he encounters to be beneath him in wit and integrity, or otherwise belligerent and prejudice. He does enjoy witty humor, cunning, and independence in others, and may be ready to make friends now that everything else in his life has been turned around.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

    1. As a scholar and historian, Ekemon seeks knowledge of his tiefling heritage and of the culture of the ancient empire of Bael Turath. Most of all, he would like to find the ancient seat of power of his doomed family.

    2. *More to come*

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!

    1) Unknown to the people that he helped liberate, Ekemon secretly aided the lords in their rebellion, helping to fund the effort by moving money around. Only one man knew, and he was killed in the fighting before Ekemon's role in the coup could be revealed.

    2. Ekemon is not the last of his bloodline. At least one of his kin still lives, and has been using the blood of his family to fuel an evil ritual that empowers his curse and grants him more control over it. Over the years, he has left few, if any other than Ekemon, alive.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

    1. Heskan - A dragonborn adventurer and archaeologist, Heskan is Ekemon's main source of texts on the Turathi empire. Heskan also helped Ekemon to learn Draconic. Many Turathi texts have been lost to time, but the greatest foe of the Turathi, the dragonborn of Arkhosia, kept records of the tieflings as well. Heskan has been invaluable in Ekemon's progress as a scholar of ancient Bael Turath. The two are not exactly friends, but share a passion for history and enjoy each other's company well enough.

    2. Mord - A half-orc enforcer, Mord accompanied Ekemon on his collections in case a more... physical presence was needed. A somewhat atypical acquaintance, Ekemon grew to appreciate Mord's simple, if somewhat crude, sense of humor after a long day calculating numbers and inimidating people to pay up. The half-orc had saved Ekemon's life on one occasion, and Ekemon returned the favor. He convinced Mord to leave the city on the eve of the rebellion, paying him to make a delivery out of town. As such, Mord was spared the violent end that many who had worked for the crown experienced.

    3. Trithian - Former Master of Coin, Trithian now rots in the dungeons below the castle. Trithian loathes Ekemon, sensing something of the tiefling's ambitions to take Trithian's position from him. In the end, Trithian suspected that Ekemon was being less than truthful with his collections, but failed to prove anything. Of noble blood, Trithian was spared an execution. He is currently imprisoned beneath the castle while the new lords determine what to do with him.

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

    1. Things tend to go wrong around Ekemon due to his blood curse. A candle might tip over, setting alight some parchments, or the saddle might come undone while a horse is galloping beneath its rider. When calm and able to put some effort into it, Ekemon believes he can dampen this effect. In combat, he has trained to direct the bad luck toward his enemies. It is this curse that saved his life, for Ekemon convinced the mob that whoever spilled his blood would take on the curse themselves.

    2. Ekemon typically has his nose in a book, and will often keep himself apart from a group to put distance between other people and his blood curse. Also, the further he is, the more quiet it is for him to read in peace.

    3. *More to come*

    Spoiler: Image
    Show

EDIT: Found a great image. I'll have to edit my description of Ekemon to better fit the picture lol because I like it a lot.

This is actually really helpful. Part of the reason Lirre didn't have a background for so long is because I was wracking my brain for ways to connect her to the party and/or modules. (The rest of the reason is because getting a decent 10-Minute Background out of myself is like pulling teeth...) But it's up now in the link above.

I wasn't planning on making her this serious, but I think she'll play well off Merellis' character. Similarly, while I made her essentially a friend of Jessica's, her protectiveness will be a good conflict with Jessica's independence.

Yggdrasil, Pixie Bladesinger and Animal Master.

A childish sprite of greed and spite. She stole the secrets of the Bladesingers from a Sect of them in the Feywild and used that to gain the favor of the Maiden of the Moon. She has since been appointed as a Knight of the Court and has been tasked with bringing the Slaying Stone back to the Feywilds, or if that would be too dangerous, destroying the foul item.

She is joined by a faithful Raven named Lateu, and the pair make an interesting combination of gray and black.

She loves the innocence and nature of children, and tends to find herself drawn to them. While Fey are known to make promises and pacts with various mortals, Yggdrasil may be one of the few that does not make a promise or pact that is entirely in her favor.

Here's hoping she is of use to the party and can spur them on to some interesting adventures!

Ok, I've got the bare bones of a 10 minute background. Hopefully that will be enough to get started. I'm just rather busy (construction has started at my job, and we're covering people on vacation, and I have to find a new apartment by the end of the month lol). I plan to add more as time permits.

We can certainly start with what we have if everyone's comfortable with that. If you make some decisions on the fly, you can just let us know about them here.

Regarding Yggdrasil, I'm curious about the raven. Will you be using it in combat much, or is it mostly for the theme power and out of combat uses (and hilarious/adorable image of a pixie taming a bird as big as she is)?

As for Dorn, he seemed like the big bruiser type of party member that every group has at least one of. I don't know if you want to play to that type at all, but you did mention he is looking for allies to slay his father. He could be grudgingly trying to improve his social skills to accomplish this and just might make some friends out of the party members by accident! Of course, that's just one way to bring his background to fruition...

I may be using the raven a bit in combat due to him being a pretty decent way to sneak some Combat Advantage, some thievery which sits well with her past of stealing secrets.

I think the imagery of a mostly gray moth pixie, a black raven, and the fact both have greedy tendencies would work well with Yggdrasil.

Yup. Sure is! I'm glad you were able to help define Lirre's background as well by offering that invitation. I'll have our introductory post composed and up by either tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll post a link in this thread in a new post and add it to the opening post of the thread.

For plot purposes, what is the component that Treona asked Jessica and Lirre to retrieve or should I make something up? How much does Jessica understand about the Slaying Stone? She has in all probability been helping Treona research the thing, I just want to know because I do not want to metagame. She probably knows that it could strike down almost anything it influences. But how it operates and to what extent I just want to know how much she understands it. :)

And sakuuya, what is Lirre's feelings, to Jessica's knowledge, regarding Jessica's possible involvement with retrieving the Slaying Stone?

Treona has actually taught Jessica the ritual she has devised to search an area for a slaying stone, but even to her precocious apprentice, she has kept secret the ritual of how to destroy the thing as much as possible. She is also particularly tight-lipped about the exact nature of the stone's creation, though due to working together for a length of time, Jessica has gleaned that it at least involves blood or possibly even soul magic in its creation. You could roll some Arcana to try to piece together a more concrete answer from the separate bits of notes and ritual work Treona has done with Jessica on the subject.

I don't think Lirre knows anything about the stone at the outset. Since she's no ritualist, Treona tends not to share magical details, and at the start of the adventure, she's just recently reconnected with Jessica after several weeks away, so until they get to Treona, she'll only know any details Jessica shares. Jessica is aware that Lirre doesn't like it when she (Jessica) puts herself in danger, and this "slaying stone" sounds like it's probably pretty dangerous.

EDIT: Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, if anyone doesn't already get a shield bonus to AC, you get one from my expertise feat. It's not range-dependent or anything, but it doesn't help with Reflex.

    Lirre will take dark blue.

But I'm at school, so don't expect me in IC for a few hours.

So...is anyone willing to switch to a striker? Lirre probably cannot handle both roles.

I cooould switch to a Sorcerer really, but then there's some backstory that I'd need to switch out a little.

I could switch to a Hexblade, but I'd have to change my ability scores, and I'd like Ekemon to be very intelligent. Let me look things over.

With the amount of hard battlefield control you guys have, you'll probably be fine in a scrap, but they'll take a bit longer since you're not pumping the DPS. You could always roll a Radiant Mafia.
