    Default A Depthless Sorrow OOC

    Right then here we are!
In your first post on here please post up your character again and that will effectively become your character sheet.
Feel free to discuss bonds with each other and look to create links that could have been formed between you.
    Contextual information-
    Blackwater
    Spoiler
    Show

A significant trading post in the North of Landfell, the country in which you were born or found yourself. Named for the raging river upon which it stands, Blackwater's early wealth came from its fish and the lumber from the great forest to the west. Now it still has these resources but after the trade link was established to Herror, the land beyond the mountains further North it has become a bustling mini metropolis, expanding quickly and with the population growth comes the associated problems- an increase in criminal activity, a loss of community etc but Blackwater is still a good place to live, it has not become a haven of vice and corruption.

    The People-

    Background:
Castor is a showman. An entertainer. A libertine. He tells grand stories, some true, some exaggerated, some entirely made up. He sings songs, gets drunk, beds barmaids, and does just about everything else you'd expect from a traveling bard. He likes doing all those things. Hedonism is fun. It's also a great cover for other goals.

Like many young men, Castor longs for the unknown. But beyond that, he desires the arcane. He wants magic, knowledge, and the power and influence to shape the world. Sometimes that means delving into dangerous and forgotten places, which he usually justifies as "just looking for a good story."

Castor came to Blackwater to perform for the local winter festival, and was then side-tracked by the subsequent celebration. It's quite chilly in the winter, so Castor has decided to simply make a living here until the weather improves, or he catches word of something interesting enough to brave the snow for. He's been staying in one of the Mayor's guest rooms in the meantime, in exchange for occasional performances. (Human starting move.)

    Contacts:
    Rodgerick "Two-Fiddles"
Castor's mentor, who taught him the life of a traveling performer. Rodgerick took him on as an apprentice, and taught Castor to sing as an accompaniment to his fiddling. Rodgerick is mostly retired now, though he does break out his instrument at special events. He is a senior member of the Bard's Guild.

    Gwinvere Allaran
A former prostitute and madame, Gwinvere had a soft spot for street urchins, offering food, shelter, and often tried to set them up with jobs or places to live. Gwinvere is the one who introduced Castor to Rodgerick.

Human: May cast Sanctuary as a wizard spell.

    Spellbook:
    - Cantrips (all)
    - Lvl 1 (Sanctuary, Detect magic, Invisibility, Magic missile, Telepathy)

    Prepare Spells:
When you spend uninterrupted time (an hour or so) in quiet contemplation of your spellbook, you:
    • Lose any spells you already have prepared
    • Prepare new spells of your choice from your spellbook whose total levels don’t exceed your own level+1.
    • Prepare your cantrips which never count against your limit.

    Cast a Spell:
When you release a spell you’ve prepared, roll+Int. ✴On a 10+, the spell is successfully cast and you do not forget the spell—you may cast it again later. ✴On a 7-9, the spell is cast, but choose one:
    • You draw unwelcome attention or put yourself in a spot. The GM will tell you how.
    • The spell disturbs the fabric of reality as it is cast—take -1 ongoing to cast a spell until the next time you Prepare Spells.
    • After it is cast, the spell is forgotten. You cannot cast the spell again until you prepare spells.
Note that maintaining spells with ongoing effects will sometimes cause a penalty to your roll to cast a spell.

You may end any ongoing spell immediately and use the energy of its dissipation to deflect an oncoming attack. The spell ends and you subtract its level from the damage done to you.

    Ritual:

    Background:
Xeno is... an oddity, even for a wizard. He was found by a peasant couple two years ago, stumbling out of the forest, half-starved, delirious and clutching a bundle of items that obviously belonged to some kind of wizard. After they'd nursed him back to health, it became obvious that he remembered next to nothing of his life before they found him. But whoever he had been, he was now a flightly, eccentric and happy-go-lucky boy, stumbling through every day with a bright smile on his face and a naive worldview that would be more fitting in a six year old.
Xeno lived for two years with the peasant couple, who came to see him as the kind, loving (But very weird) son they never had. They gave him the name Xeno, and helped him come to terms with it when he found out that his former self had apparently been a trained wizard. Armed with knowledge he could not remember learning, a spellbook he could not remember writing, and a lot of enthusiasm, Xeno spent his days re-learning his magic, and using it where he could to brighten the day of the people around him. Riverwood, the small village they lived in eventually (after a good while of uncertainty) accepted him for the almost harmless person he was, although they also learned to keep an eye on him, since his airy personality did make him somewhat accident-prone.
When two years had passed since he was found, the now 15 years old Xeno (he does not know his real age, but since the common consensus was that he was definitely not eighteen or older, he decided on fifteen) set out into the world, in the hopes of finding out more about his past. The only clue he has is the vague memory of an old man named Vitus, who Xeno is fairly convinced is also a wizard.
After some twists and turns Xeno has now ended up in the southern town of Blackwater. Although he is not sure how. He was pretty sure he started travelling north this morning...

    Contacts:
    - Martha & Wesley. The pesant couple who took Xeno in when they found him wandering the forest. Martha is a loving but stern mother, a retired warrior, and also a very talented cook. Wesley, a retired cleric, is kind and wise beyond his years. He taught the sanctuary spell to Xeno, in the hope that it would aid his travels.
They both hold positions of great respect in their village, which helped immensely in getting the villagers to trust and accept Xeno despite his peculiarities.

    - Vitus. The old man who Xeno vaguely remembers. What little he recalls shows a serious, knowledgeable and extremely powerful man. Xeno also gets a distinct feeling of fear whenever he thinks of Vitus, though he can't recall if it is fear for the old man, or fear OF him.

    22 gold
    Antitoxin
Poultices and Herbs (1 weight, 2 uses, Slow)

    Background:
Barrack's life has been one of isolation. All he has truly known is the life of a brewer and cooper at the Blackwater Brewery, a few days north of the town of Blackwater. The only time Barrack has ever seen another person is when a human or an occasional elf comes around to discuss business with his old man. Constant exercise, including barrel-lifting, stave-hammering, and combat training under the tutelage of his father turned Barrack into a burly example of dwarfish muscle. At the same time, constant beer sampling and hearty meals in winter have given the young dwarf a considerable beer gut. When not engaged in refining his palette or stretching his muscles, Barrack contented himself with sitting by the fire and listening to his father's stories of dwarven heroes and lost halls. One thing that always bothered him, however, was the absence of his mother. When Barrack asked Haldal about it, his father would always shrug it off and tell him "not to trouble yourself over it". As he grew older, Barrack came to a conclusion on his own: He had never seen a female dwarf, so there must be no such thing. When Barrack became a man, he noticed that Haldal grew melancholy as he spoke of future generations of brewers. A combination of concern for his family's business, combined with the wanderlust inspired by the boredom of his existence, had Barrack commit the unthinkable. While Haldal was away on a rare business trip, Barrack rounded up his handed-down armor and his cooper mallet and headed off on his own real-life adventure. The next day, however, had Haldal return home from arranging a marriage with a rich merchant's daughter. To say that he was upset would be an understatement...

    NPCs:
Hardal Stoutbarrel: Barrack's father and owner of Blackwater Brewery. He is a grim ex-veteran and dislikes random company. At some point in his past, Haldal left behind life in the dwarven halls and started his own brewery on the surface. Other dwarves often call him a traitor to selling fine dwarven spirits to the surface-dwellers. His life now revolves around perfecting his brew and developing new recipes for ale, mead, and any other number of beverages. When his precious brewery comes under attack from greenskin looters or thirsty bandits, he favors the use of a heavy crossbow. A black beard covers his scarred chin and flaky green eyes judge those standing before him. Barrack's running away has left the old man very distressed, though how of much of it is due to concern for his son and how much is due to the arranged marriage is anyone's guess.

    Original Image

    Spoiler: The Ten-Minute Background
    Show
    Concept Elements
    1) Exiled to a druid's life, Jawdat never met her mentor before she was captured into slavery. This unfortunate event caused something nearly unheard of: a druid without a circle.

    2) Unrelated to her druidism, but not herself she is a member of the Huw (Arkan in her native lands) religious order.

    3) A wanderer. She needs no reason to travel and feels compelled to do so even without other motivations. New sights and experiences, little glimmers of a wonderful world some forget they live in.

    4) Never home, always the stranger. Jawdat is use to being mistreated and alone though she has an increasing distaste for such occurrences.

    5) Jawdat is an adventurer by trade. Such ventures take a back seat to other aspects of her life, gold in the heart isn't worth some gold in the pocket.

    Goals
    1) Word has it that an escaped slave has made their way into Landfell. She is seeking to aid this destitute soul.

    2) Through her fault she has become indebted and was forced to give up her sword. As a weapon it is worthless, but its value is not measured in its metal.

    3) Enjoy what Huw's forest has to offer.

    Secrets
    1) Jawdat is an escaped slave. Though her owner is long dead her brand means she is property to some.

    2) Unbeknownst to her a druid is looking for her.

    3) Gm Secret.

    People
    1) Jawdat's father, mother, two brothers, and sister - Family was always a major and important part of her life. Her brothers and sisters are surely elders by now & her parents have certainly moved on.

    2) Elouise - Fellow priest of Huw & friend, she is a local that has aided Jawdat greatly, both personally and on the job. They seem to share similar passions.

    3) Lina - Slavers have always been Jawdat's personal enemy, a spirtiual one too. The two know each other, but Jawdat was not responsible for freeing the slave she looks for now.

    Memories, Mannerisms, or Quirks
    1) She harbors a lot of fond feelings for her family. The good times will always be remembered.

    2) Years of harsh treatment are burned into her mind and body.

    3) Luxuries are her soft spot & she knows it.

    Background:

Morgan was taught wizardry by none other than Master Avon the Dread Necromancer of the North. When the Fellowship of the Light came to stop his Ascension to the Void Throne, Morgan betrayed her own master, shattering his Phylactery, and ensuring that he would not Ascend. Though her Master was defeated by the Fellowship, Morgan knew better than any that death was no barrier to the power of the Dread Necromancer -- she has been on the run since. As the mountain passes and ports have been closed from ice and snow, she finds herself unable to travel any further south than the refuge of Blackwater.

    NPCs:

The Dread Necromancer of the North: Morgan's former master. He was slain in combat by the Fellowship of Light -- but he has many allies in the Void, not to mention that to a necromancer, Death is no obstacle.

Barton Dawnbringer: Paladin and commander of the Fellowship. He was taken prisoner by the Dread Necromancer and tortured for information, even as his allies were closing in on Tower Blighthome. It was during his imprisonment that the seeds for Morgan's redemption were sewn, and it is because of Barton that she chose to betray the Dread Necromancer to the forces of Good. Barton asked for Morgan's hand in marriage following the Battle of Blighthome, but she didn't like him like that. Things got weird, and she slipped away in the middle of the night to take her chances on her own.

    Spoiler: Morgan's Bonds
    Show
Castor will play an important role in the events to come. I have foreseen it! (Castor is drawn to the arcane like a moth to the flame -- it is no coincidence that he has arrived at Blackwater at this time. It is likely that Morgan will keep Castor's company, at least until such time as she can determine what his true Destiny is; or Destiny plays its hand on its own.)

Jawdat is keeping an important secret from me. (Morgan and Jawdat share a few similar experiences having served cruel masters. Morgan senses some sort of connection, but her own sinister aloofness and Jawdat's secrecy are a barrier to commiseration. This might be resolved if either they learn to trust one another, or Morgan finds a way to pry the secrets of Jawdat's origins on her own.)

Xeno is woefully misinformed about the world; I will teach him all that I can. (While Xeno is clearly a talented Wizard, Morgan feels he lacks the proper gravitas and discipline to ever truly master the Arts. This might be resolved should she teach him the importance of discipline, or if he can show her the value of spontaneity and whimsy.)

    XP: 5

    Intelligence: 17 (+2)
    Wisdom:
    9 (0)
    Charisma: 15 (+1)

    Spell Defense:
You may end any ongoing spell immediately and use the energy of its dissipation to deflect an oncoming attack. The spell ends and you subtract its level from the damage done to you.

    Ritual:
When you draw on a place of power to create a magical effect, tell the GM what you’re trying to achieve. Ritual effects are always possible, but the GM will give you one to four of the following conditions:
    • It’s going to take days/weeks/months
    • First you must ____
    • You’ll need help from ____
    • It will require a lot of money
    • The best you can do is a lesser version, unreliable and limited
    • You and your allies will risk danger from ____
    • You’ll have to disenchant ____ to do it

    Advanced moves:
    - Prodigy (Prepare Detect magic as a lvl 0 spell)

    Equipment (Load: 12/15)
    - Spellbook (1 weight)
    - 5 Dungeon rations (5 uses, 1 weight)
    - Bag of books (5 uses, 2 weight)
    - 5 healing potions
    - Staff (close, two-handed, 1 weight)
    - 3 antitoxins
    - 2 bandages
    - 2 adventuring gear (5 uses, 1 weight)
    - Super snazzy fire demon belt (2 armor, 0 weight)
    - Sculpture of Knowledge (Sculpture, 0 weight. Special properties: You gain +1 to attack/damage rolls and to arcane rolls when checking for information. During battle/after a battle, if you have lost a spell you can forgo your turn and concentrate to regain that spell to your spell list.)

    Background:
Xeno is... an oddity, even for a wizard. He was found by a peasant couple two years ago, stumbling out of the forest, half-starved, delirious and clutching a bundle of items that obviously belonged to some kind of wizard. After they'd nursed him back to health, it became obvious that he remembered next to nothing of his life before they found him. But whoever he had been, he was now a flightly, eccentric and happy-go-lucky boy, stumbling through every day with a bright smile on his face and a naive worldview that would be more fitting in a six year old.Xeno lived for two years with the peasant couple, who came to see him as the kind, loving (But very weird) son they never had. Riverwood, the small village they lived in eventually (after a good while of uncertainty) accepted him for the almost harmless person he was, although they also learned to keep an eye on him, since his airy personality did make him somewhat accident-prone.When two years had passed since he was found, the now 15 years old Xeno (he does not know his real age, but since the common consensus was that he was definitely not eighteen or older, he decided on fifteen) set out into the world, in the hopes of finding out more about his past.

    - There is obviously more to being a paladin than Sir Auren is letting on. I must uncover this new mystery that is paladin-ness.

    - I have no clue how to find out more about my past. With all he knows about stories and people, I'm sure Castor can help.

    - The Vortex has proven to be at the heart of all the troubles of this region. I must find it, and either control it or destroy it.

Alright then. We're mainly supposed to have bonds to the other PC's right? or should we also have bonds to NPC's?

Anyway, I'm thinking a fitting bond to Morgan would be something like:

"Morgan is far too serious, and spends too much time worrying over the past. I should make her smile, and teach her to enjoy life more."

This of course depends on whether it fits with you, EclecticGuru. If Morgan is already a happy and worry free person, it doesn't really fit. I'm just kinda assuming that the necromancer theme brings with it a fair bit of seriousness, which Xeno could never ignore. He will defeat all seriousness with hugs and illusional butterflies

Actually, this bond could fit with any of the others who are serious and/or grim. If anyone feels up to being the focus of Xeno's cheering and naiveté, please speak up.

Bonds usually link PCs together, but can link to NPCs or organisations.
What I like about Dungeon World, like Fate, is that you can suggest and create elements together- players can say no or suggest alternatives as well as accept.

Bond brainstorming, let me know what you think.

Jawdat is used to being mistreated by people she doesn't know. I will show her that sometimes, one can depend depend on the kindness of strangers.

I've told stories before about the Fellowship of the Light and the Dread Necromancer, and Morgan was part of that struggle. Are legendary figures really larger than life? Or is that just part of the stories we tell?

Xeno seems awfully young. He'll need to prove himself before I can fully trust him in a dangerous situation.

Morgan and Xeno are both wizards - I'd like to learn magic from one or both of them.

Jawdat is an adventurer by trade. I will learn from her experience.

Looks good to me. Here are some of my own:

    - Morgan is filled with seriousness and worries. I should help her find the brighter side of things.

    - I have no clue how to find out more about my past. With all he knows about stories and people, I'm sure Castor can help.

    - Jawdat is really smart and strong. I wanna be like her. Then I wont have to worry, and can be happy all the time.

I've tried to have the Bonds reflect how naive Xenos outlook is. I'm not married to them, though, so dont hold back if there's something about it you dont like.

The Castor/Xeno bonds seem good to me. We'll have to wait and see what Elbeyon and Eclectic think about the others.

Also, anyone have thoughts on how everyone met or what we're going to work on first? I'm pretty open on what we do, but it sounds like the rest of the characters have much more specific goals.

Perhaps he's heard about her looking into the goblin raids. It's been a passing interest to her.

Perhaps the two met after Jawdat heard rumors about a young man traveling without knowing where or how. She probably would have investigated such a curious rumor (and perhaps to offer assistance to such a person).

Heh, I think these two experience bonds might cash out xp whenever it's discovered that she's rather normalish.

Maybe he's seen her hesitancy with strangers? Or perhaps he's noticed the scar on her. And while he doesn't know it's specific meaning, figured it was from something dark happening in her life. He might even think she committed some crime, or was branded for some morale trespass (scarlet letter situation).

That works. And, here I was hoping for some delicious drama. Her brand is on one of her scapulas btw. It's not visible at a glance, but if you've been around her a decent amount chances are you've seen it. Given that it's a letter in a language no one knows it probably looks like a fancy tribal tattoo except, you know, burns.

Yeah. That second one I don't really like (never have). I figured it would resolve whenever she sees Castor's implementation or lack thereof the rite.

I'm fine with all these bonds on Morgan, without need for modification.

Here are some bonds I'm proposing for Morgan:

Sweet, I go to bed- nothing, I awake and arrive at work and ta da! You guys have been hard at work!
I like the bonds so far.
    From what I'm feeling
Castor has been there the longest- maybe 2 1/2 - 3 months- performing and then hanging around. Morgan and Jawdat a bit less with Keno there the least, but all of you at least a month.

How you all met- you've probably helped out in a range of ways-
Definitely fighting Goblins- there was a read two weeks prior to the game starting and the Sheriff will have asked for your help.
In deep winter, story telling, songs, drunken boasting will have happened in one of the taverns. Games of chance and skill.
The temples have (small) libraries and places to study and the wilderness around Blackwater is filled with farmsteads, wild animals hungry for prey. Also your own interests will have caused you to meet- seeking each other out.
Mayor Hardiman has probably hosted you all at dinner at least twice as although you are becoming familiar faces in the town you're still somewhat exotic.

Makes sense. I've got no problem with the suggested bonds for my character.

I think that all the bonds look good, and the wasy we've met and interacted seems good too.

When not being involved in one of the problems (goblins and whatnot), Xeno has spent most of his time either helping out around the temples (mostly the temple of Oppene, but he's offered to help at the other one too, since he didn't want them to feel left out.), or playing with and entertaining children. Prestidigitation has seen a lot of use in this respect, since illusions and bright colors make for wonderful entertainment.

That was not prescriptive- just my reading of things- she can have caught the festival if you prefer.

Just as a heads up I am away this weekend- visiting my folks. I'll be looking to start the IC thread Mon/Tues- when it's up I'll post the link in here and we can start the game.

Posting- generally once a day is fine by me- more is good if possible, weekends will be more tricky for me what with two small kids etc etc.

Feel free to discuss, refine bonds- you guys have a clear handle on this or discuss how you first met, initial impressions- did anyone impress on the goblin raid? Mayenne Silverhair, the Sheriff, fought beside you- she's a warrior- just for your info.

Just re-read this bit and realised I hadn't answered it.
The Dread Necromancer- yes you've sung songs and told stories of him. The Fellowship of the Light are an ancient order, so yes you'll know about them and they have had many great heroes across the centuries- do legends really live up to their stories? Sagas say they do, but in reality well...we'll see!
As for the recent casting down of the Necromancer and Morgan's role in this, there is still a lot of rumour about this, no one is really clear about what has happened and the Fellowship aren't speaking!

    Looks great to me!

I'd say that Castor impressed. Not so much that they're handing him the city keys or anything. But enough that Mayenne thought "Hey, he's not quite the same as all those other (hireling) minstrels. Maybe I can find a use for him elsewhere..." That sort of thing.

And of course, Castor's been hamming it up a bit in the tavern, telling tall tales. The handful of goblins has become a horde. His personal heroics are a bit more dramatic, and so forth.

Jawdat always impresses in combat. Not necessarily because of skill or success, but because she has a very flashy combat style. Turning into animals is fairly extraordinary to watch I'd think.

I guess she's been rather aimless in her efforts around town. She's not interested in playing buddy buddy or fixing mundane problems. I imagine her search for the slave in this town is nearing an end and the person was probably never here. She might have done some hard physically demanding work if the coin was good enough just to give her some change to spend. She doesn't request coin for adventurer work, but takes it if it's offered (She makes it clear she doesn't need payed too).

Morgan didn't call much attention to herself during the actual raid. She assisted, mainly by fetching arrows and crossbow bolts for the militia, and for helping guide all the noncombatants to the inn where they were fortifying.

It wasn't until after the battle that she acted in any unusual way. She was spotted trying to abscond with the body of a goblin champion to her room during the after-battle chaos. She was apprehended by Sheriff Mayenne and during questioning, it became clear that Morgan was planning on summoning forth the spirit of the dead goblin, not in the name of Openne, and certainly not to give the goblin one last chance to renounce its sins and beg for redemption; no, Morgan was instead planning on bending the spirit to her will and forcing it to reveal what it knew of the motives behind the goblin raid, and any martial intelligence it had on other goblin raiding parties, their camps, and their strategic goals in the area.

While the Sheriff agreed that the information gained could be extremely useful, she was already on thin ice with the local churches -- that and the rumors of Dread Necromancy taking place in the region had the locals a bit on edge. She ordered Morgan to not practice unsanctioned necromancy within the town limits, and released Morgan after securing a promise to that effect.

Morgan did, however, notice which unmarked grave the goblin champion ended up in, and has been quietly planning a daring grave robbery since.

While he has been both helpful and enthusiastic during his stay in Blackwater, Xeno's efforts during the goblin raid were all but impressive. While he did defend himself and help where he could, he was not very keen on fighting. He tried more than once during the raid to talk with the goblins and find a way for the two groups too coexist. Neither goblins nor villagers where interested, of course. After the battle the sheriff scolded Xeno severely because of the trouble his childish outlook had caused.
Xeno then spent the next few days being depressed, both from the scolding and due to all the wounds and hurts both goblins and villagers had suffered.
