Time seems to fly by as Mat continues to work through the night. Enraptured by his work, he finds himself finally finishing just before the dawn of the final day of their journey. The bottle almost seems to recoil as the dim light of dawn begins to shine upon it. Having a sip of a bland, but effective potion by Rudral, the ship sounds busy above them.

Mat can hear the crew in their preparation to dock in just a few short hours. A few short hours until he returns to his home land.

Mat packs his things tidily, stowing all his possessions into his trunk. He looks around his quarters one last time before dropping to the deck.

"Rudral, your knife, if you please."

Though an inquisitive look crosses the valet's face, he obeys.

Mat takes the knife in his teeth befor shimmying under the bed in a very undignified way. Using the knife and a floating orb of light to guide him, Mat works. First, he slices two wand-sized slats from the decking beneath the bed. Next, he picks an obvious spot and an inconspicuous spot in the deck beneath the bed. In the obvious spot he carves a "ML" in fine scripting swirls. In the inconspicuous spot he carves his sigil, the alchemical symbol for glass, as small as possible. Finally, Mat pulls several splinters of wood from various boards around the room, securing them in his spell component pouch for safekeeping.

After all is done, Mat brushes himself off and hands the knife back to Rudral. "Thank you, Rudral. Shall we?" Mat then walks out of the room with every ounce of noble pomp he possess and stands at the bow eagerly awaiting sight of his homeland.

The fresh smell of sea air is finally rid of the crude sand from Qadira, and now has a more earth, fresh tone. The sun finally appearing from behind the clouds as Mat exits the lower decks. Just to the northeast, he can see a city worthy of stepping his feet in: Cassomir. Green grasslands cover the majority on this city from this distant view, as The Dayrl begins to dock into Cassomir's Locker, the main dock of the city. Passing through a rough patch of jagged rocks to the south that claimed many enemy ship, he remembers his mother teaching was called "Dog's teeth". Turning north, a stone structure resembling a lighthouse, but an erratic beacon of sort, turning on and off and the worst time, gaining it's name of "Treacherous Jack".

Memories begin to flood Mat's mind and Rudral smiles next to him. Daryl walks up next to him and offers a hand of friendship before they part. He also provides Mat with his funds for the journey he took. Daryl wishes him safe journeys, and hopes their paths meet on the new roads ahead of them.

Sumina tips her hat at Mat as the ship docks. Still working with the crew, she doesn't have much time to spare during docking.

Vikeer stares at the city from the side of the deck. She has been uncharacteristically quiet the whole journey, and declined Mat's offer to renegotiate a new deal.

Mat breathes in the salt air hungrily. The smell of grass is intoxicating. The eager young Taldan tips his hat to Treacherous Jack as the Darryl sails past, giving the old boy his due.

When Darryl offers his hand, Mat takes it heartily. "Until we meet again, Darryl." That's as much as he gives the man. A handshake and a strained smile.

Mat bows formally in the old Taldan style to Sumina: hat off and grazing the deck as it flourishes; a single leg outstretched with pointed toe. The most respectful bow a noble can bestow another. She, despite their shortcomings, has given Mat so much. He's truly grateful for knowing her.

As they begin to toss mooring lines, Mat speaks to Vikeer. "It's a shame you've chosen to leave our company, Vikeer. I've learned a lot from you, truly." Mat hands the girl a small sachet filled with heavy coin. "Thirty. Consider it your severance. You should be able to find a very nice room for at least two months with that. Don't let them haggle you down. It's a fair price." Mat looks out over Cassomir appraisingly. "You know, Cassomir is a rough place for a young Vudrani girl alone. I, myself, am planning on making my way immediately to the Temple of Calistria. Might not be a bad first port of call for you too. Of course, if you have anywhere else you'd rather visit first, I'd gladly escort you and make sure you make it there safely. It's the least I can do to thank you for your service."

Setting foot on the docks of Taldor inspires Mathwin. Home. A gentleman's land. Strong footing take next steps. The air of The Daryl seemed stale, as without looking back Mat begins walking with confidence. Vikeer, coyly accepts Mat's offer to walk to the Temple of Calistria.

    Spoiler: Map of Cassomir
    Show

Walking through the Imperial Naval shipyard, strong stout ships made by worthy Talden workers fill the docks. The docks are busy with work, as Mat notices a few ships being built and repaired on the southern edge of the shipyard.

Having been told of the small temple to Calistira in Cassomir, Mat heads directly to Abbey Green. The buildings here are some of the oldest in Cassomir, constructed of stone, brick, and mortar, and generally standing no taller than three stories. Many resident merchants live here in apartments above their stores, and Abbey Green is also occupied by some of Taldor’s finest tailors, leatherworkers, jewelcrafters, and fine
    metalworkers.

The temple he arrives at is two stories of yellow painted bricks with black banners that fall from each of the temples window. The sun is high in the sky as clerics and clergy are praying, cleaning, and tending to those in need.

A female, about Mat's height, with yellow eyes and long black hair approaches in a yellow blouse, and jet black leggings. "Good tidings travelers. Have you come to lay prayers to the Lady in the Room, or are in need?"

Even as Mat walks down the gangplank of the Darryl, he raises his palm in an arcane gesture of summoning. Motes of amber light leave his fingers and hit four nearby spots on the dock. From those four points, four hooves begin to materialize out of solid and faintly luminescent energy. Mat smiles in satisfaction as his steed forms from pure magic. He tosses in a little flair when the summoning reaches the creature's mane as he causes it to flow and drip like honey. Reaching the fine mount, Mat secures his belongings to it firmly and climbs up. Extending a hand to Vikeer, Mathwin is happy to have her riding behind him. Rudral walks beside his master.

As Mat makes his way North toward the temple of his Lady, he makes no effort to move with speed. He strolls his mount northward, admiring the ships and their shipwrights. He takes in the city, getting a feel of the place. He notes drinking and gambling establishments (for purely academic reasons). He also holds his head high and wears his signet proudly. This is Taldor. A place where someone's name means something. A place where he . . . means . . . something.

Shaking that thought out of his head, when the little parade approaches the temple, Mat's happy to see an established church, rather than the makeshift shrine from the barbaric Katheer. Mat dismounts and gives Vikeer a wholly polite and unnecessary hand down as well. When approached by the cleric, Mathwin doffs his hat and bows. Not to the waist, as this is not a member of royalty or the noble class, but far lower than someone of his station strictly needs to bow. He honors her.

"Good Morning, my lady. I am Mathwin of House Lora, first son of the Oppara line and devoted servant of the Savored Sting." Motioning to Vikeer, Mat continues. "This is Vikeer of Niswan. She has been training with and working for me while I traveled the Inner Sea. Now, she wishes to leave my employ. I suggested here as a first step for her in Cassomir. I can vouch that she is an adept ambassador for her people, a keen talent with the whip, and an exceptional teacher at the pleasurable arts."

Mat motions to Rudral, "My valet and I have just disembarked from a long and weather-beaten journey. I wish to give thanks to my Lady and perhaps learn a little more about this city. I have not visited since my youth, and I'm sure there is much to know about the goings-on about town."

Looking at the group, she smiles and nods to Vikeer, "Welcome Vikeer, please head inside, one of the clerics can help you understand where you may go." Vikeer looks to Mat, eyes full of troubled thoughts. She takes a deep breath in, and exhales "I may never have left that island if it weren't for you. For that I am thankful. I hope you've learned as much as I have." She turns quickly and enters the church.

The young woman looks towards Mat and Rudral, "Mathwin of House Lora you said? If memory serves me right, Lord Lora serves highly in then Silk business, correct? An honor to have such an established lineage come to pray at our church. I've come to know this city quite well. Perhaps I can be of assistance in both your queries. What is it you'd ask of our lady of vengeance?"

Mat gives Vikeer a nod as she heads inside. Strange, he thinks, I barely got to know the child, but she seems like she was glad to be rid of me. Ah, well. Perhaps another time . . .

Mat smiles to the lady cleric. "You know your nobility! Impressive. I am of that very house, yes. My father is Lord Lora. I would prefer to discuss my business in private if possible. The Lady in the Room surely has somewhere where we can find some privacy?"

Once away from prying ears in a separate room, Mathwin finds somewhere comfortable to sit and requests Rudral to pour two glasses of the deep Vudrani red. Offering one of the glasses to the priestess, Mat continues. "I thank you for your hospitality. I think first, I would like to tell you a abridged story. In Katheer, our last port of call, I made a very potent vow to our Lady while worshiping with her priestess. One of trickery and betrayal. One that she saw fit to reward with a substantial boon of magical protection. Now, that vow has blossomed into the potential for true vengeance, for the one I sought to betray has grievously slighted me. This debt cannot go unpaid."

Mat takes a long drink and holds out his cup to be refilled. Rudral obliges.

"First, I must give thanks to our Lady for the grace she has already shown me, and also for the gift she has now given me: Vengeance. After giving thanks, I need guidance. I will now watch the subject of my wrath sail away, whereas before I had time to bring slow and methodical betrayal to fruition. I need guidance on how to maintain the fire in my belly right now. How will I give this man his just deserts?"

"Additionally, I have been given a quest to deliver letters all over the Inner Sea. My method of conveyance is now gone. I am unsure of how quickly I'll be able to find another ship, but until I do, I must not delay in my duties. Are there any in this temple powerful enough to summon a servant of our Lady to help with this? I understand that payment would be required."

"And finally, I need help with whatever you can tell me about the goings-on of this city. Cassomir will be a port of call for longer than anticipated, and so I need some foundation of knowledge. Where can I find lodgings for someone of my station? Where are the arcane dueling grounds? Have you heard of any others from my family in the city? My sister was supposed to meet me here. Are there any rumors or announcements that have made the rounds recently. Anything would be helpful, truly."

Mat finishes his second glass and places a hand over it before Rudral can refill. "I have been very blessed by the Lady in the Room. I intend to repay her blessings with whatever means I can muster. This temple will be visited frequently and I plan to become a very generous patron. Please. Allow me that."

The priestess sips a golden mead from a small, yet tall stemmed glass, her eyes focused directly on Mat's the entire time. Matching each sip with his, she nods and seems to follow along with his plot and story. After Mat has finished, she gives a smirk. "You have the ambition of a king, and the focus of a solider. If your stories are indeed true, then you will make a fine asset to the Savored Sting." She pours a second drink for herself and begins to pace around the room, lighting candles and incenses, moving her hands on symbols of Calistria and other reliquaries.

"As for this slight upon you; many commoners have a saying 'What goes around comes around'. And we who worship a goddess of vengeance knows that it isn't that easy. But there is truth in that saying; it does 'come around'. One who wishes to truly enact true vengeance must wait and plan for the perfect retribution, or wait to find the right opportunity. If you have been blessed, as you state, then you know this well. Trust in the instincts that she has blessed upon you. The truer the revenge is to you and the slight against you, the more clear it will be to our mistress. But we teach patience. If this man truly is to leave, then you must trust it will come in time, as long as you strive to make it."

She breaths in some of the smokes from the flames and incenses, "As for your letters, I can imply that a simple courier service would not suffice, correct? We may have a member who could help, if not deliver themselves, than perhaps by other means. Who do these letter need to go to?"

"As for learning more in the city, it's always best to have your ear close to the ground. The city is always changing, best to have the latest information from those who think that the price of telling you is only an ale away. I suggest The Drunken Oak Lodge. Lauren, the bartender knows well the truths and lies that enter her tavern." She eyes Mat up and down, "And a mind for combat I see? The dueling grounds would be found in Threegates, at the Coremount School, a privately owned school for Arcane arts."

"I look forward to seeing how you will benefit our Lady with all this information. The world needs minds like our to move it forward." She sits back down, ready to answer any further questions.

Mathwin listens closely and heeds the advice of his spiritual counselor.

"These letters are of an extremely sensitive and covert nature. A courier would not do. Perhaps an outsider in service to our Lady? Do you have any in the temple capable of summoning and entreating a Vendenopterix? I have the means to locate the intended recipients, and could convey this information to the outsider, but I cannot reveal the secret to any other. The completion of my contract requires discretion. Once delivered, if the outsider could confirm receipt, I'd be willing to pay a great deal extra."

Mat mulls over the suggestion about lodging, information, and dueling. "Interesting. Lauren; Is she a friend of the temple? In what district does the Drunken Oak lie? And Coremount, does it have a specialty? What manner of mage does it create?"

The priestess finishes her glass of mead and picks up the glass of wine, having let it sit and aerate for a few minutes. "I do enjoy the tannins, and a sweet drink before helps extract those flavors on my palette. You are seemingly kind, although I am not naïve to assume as much of you." She smiles graciously as she sips on the wine.

"As for the services you need, you are very learned. If you intend to travel across very far distances, the Vendenopterix would not be your quickest choice. Certainly an interesting one though. I believe in the morning we can have one of our clerics bring a creature we are more familiar with, a lovely guardian called an Empusa. She should be more fit for travel and this courier. Of course, our maidens services would not go unwarranted for payment, as you said. For us to cast the spell, I think a donation of... 300 gold should suffice? You should however, bring a healthy sum of an offering, and then be prepared in your dealing to spend quite a bit more. She will not be brought to our plane for ill or boring purpose."

"As for learning more of the city, Lauren is a friend of mine, less of the church. She's a good of a place for a returned Talden to start. The tavern is in the Shipyard, 3rd green building on the left from the exit of the docks. Might be a better place to learn about your sisters arrival. I may know your family name, but until I couldn't name a single child of theirs, or many of the family's."

"Coremount Academy breeds many sorts, but is mainly a private school of higher students from," she pauses distinctly, "worthy applicants. I've had a dealing or two with some of these students, they seem to be mainly abjurers."

She finishes Mat's wine. "It seems like the city will be more lively with you around Mathwin Lora. Would you ask more of The Lady in the Room today?"

Given the instructions from Clarissa, the journey does not take long. Mat is able to find the Drunken Oak just as the sun hits the height of the sky.

As he enters, the tavern is mostly empty. A pair of human sailors sit in the corner drinking ale and playing cards, a half-elf softly playing a lute, and an older tanned human sweeping the floor and wiping tables. The bar itself is well maintained, clean and aesthetically pleasing.
Behind the bar is a tall blond women with broad shoulders and a choker with a simple gold coin looped around. She waves at you and says, "Welcome traveler, names Lauren. Care to sit and have a drink? Or you looking for a room to stay the night?"

She ponders as the quiet bar is filled with Mat's recounting of his sister, a welcome memory. The bartender follows along, "Yes...that does sound familiar. There was a girl in here a few nights ago talking with a few locals about the sights and the ships I think. She started talking about her big brother; some sort of magician? He had won some awards, I believe? "

The older man brings out a plate of food for Mat, as the warm sweet flavor of pork fills the air. "The brother was a bit of a fancy pants, in some school yes? Traveling the world or something? Handsome, but stronger headed?" She catches herself, "Is that you? Those are her words of course, not mine."

She continues cleaning the bar, "Why's it been so long since you've seen her? Seems plenty lovely, and not the type of girl you'd want to leave in the city all alone without a place to meet?"

As Mat begins to eat his amazing smelling food, Lauren wipes her hands from cleaning the bar, and places her hand on Mat's. "Oh don't worry, I'm sure she'll find you soon enough. A brother like you can't be too hard to stay away from. Even after such a journey, I'm sure she misses you very much."

She smiles, "Anything else you need Mat?"

Mat's eyebrow raises as he is confused about the casualness of her attitude. He looks at her, and his trained eyes can see this image before him isn't quite all there. He was too focused before to notice that her clothes aren't moving with her entirely correct; to towel on her side is gently floating not quite attached. Mat's mind comes to the quick realization that is some sort of illusion! But her hand on his is real, and the soft skin of whatever is in front of him smile his seemingly sudden realization.

Mat's mind begins to race with scenes and images that are not his own. Flashing in vignettes, with different images highlighting at different times. The first that hits Mat is two children of pale youth, playing in a yard with sticks, running around in ignorance and bliss. The scene flashes and changes to tears running down a small female face, as she waves to ship leaving a familiar Talden shipyard. Clutching the hands of a dress, a motherly figure holds her close as a tall, well-groomed and bearded gentleman watches the ship stoically by their side.

Pulled from that, his minds races through scenes of countless tea times, highrise balls, and writing sessions; all accomplished through gritted teeth. After these events, you see the small girl from the vision before yelling at the well groomed gentlemen, who stands a stoic as before, non-budging. She's runs past him and into a well decorated room and flies head first into the bed in a rage. Crying into a pillow, she eventually gets up and finds a picture of the boy from earlier. Grasping it with raged filled hands, she rips it apart into small pieces. The motherly figure enters the room, but the door slams shut behind her, much to the mother and the girls surprise. The mother comforts the girl with a confused face, as the girl stares at her hands in wonder and confusion.

Pushed into seemingly another memory, the girl sits at a table at a fancy party. The stoic man from before is talking intensely across the table to another man with an royal Andoran sash across him. The conversation seem heated both men stop in defiant anger towards each other suddenly. After a second of awkward tension, the young stands. All the parties at the table seem confused, but as the young women begins to speak, eyebrows raise, expression calm, and tensions seemed eased. The stoic man for the first time lets a pleasant smile fill his face.

A series of handshakes, negotiations, and signed papers fill the visions as they race past Mat's mind. The young girl suddenly shifts into a women of tall stature and elegancy. But her face contains more than that; it has happiness on it. Not the kind you can fake. True, inspired happiness.

As the young women sits in a much more elegant room, she lights a candle in the evening. Her hand extends towards a desk 30 feet away, and a small leather book floats towards her. As she opens it, she thumbs through the pictures inside, and stops at a ripped picture of a young boy that has been pieced back together. She smiles as she looks over a letter parchment on the bed, with Mat's seal on it. The women smiles as she looks at both, as Mat is thrusted back through the visions into the material plane again.

The blond haired lady in front of Mat begins to fade away, as the hair turns to a long black braid. The skin softens into a cool pale glow, and a smile brightens the face of a person Mat once knew. "I've been told you love to make an entrance. I couldn't help but do the same. I can't tell you how good it is to see you again, brother."

Mat stands without preamble and hugs his sister. "Lissia. Oh, Little Lissia, how I missed you! Sit! Sit! Eat with me, drink with me! I'm assuming the true landlady is skulking about somewhere, giggling at your little charade! Let's celebrate! I have so much to tell you and so much more to ask!"

As the final sections of Allissa's illusion fade, she returns the hug to Mat. "I would be delighted to share a meal with my brother. As for Lauren, I convinced her to let me run the bar for a few hours. She told me that most adventurers stop by in the inn first stop, so I figured as any that this would be a good spot to find you. You didn't mention a spot to meet, and my letters were taking too long for you to respond to! So I took matters into my own hands. I knew it would work out well." Her head turns to wards the back, and she snaps her fingers. "Lauren, thank you for your hospitality, but I don't think the bartender life suits me. I will be needing another room, under my tab." A confused image of the person Mat was just talking to exits form the back in a bit of a daze. Mat has seen this look before on charmed individuals. "Some food and drink would be delightful as well!" Lauren nods her head and smiles, as a peppy induvial is restored to her right mind. She brings out a corked bottle of sparkling wine, a fine 30 year vintage from the Opparan Imperial Winery, to share between the two.
