I am wondering how much 45 knows given that he looked like he was getting ready to fight in the second last panel.

He may have just seen Ardon about to pull his weapon and been ready to take him out if he drew. Though he also may know more than he lets on. It has been suggested he is quite intelligent with a lot of information sources given his prediction of Ardon's death. He has to have had information on Ardon and the rest along with knowledge of the dungeon they were going to. He even predicted they were going to leave and rest. It suggests he was watching them for awhile and that he has an access to a lot of information though he apparently didn't know about Ardon being wanted until they found that poster so maybe not.

Certainly possible. It's also possible that Groffnar himself would have told him.

45 has made his hatred of Ardon, and plan to eventually kill him very plain. This was true even before Ardon showed himself to be anything other than a shady character. In light of what happened to Odie, we now know that his judgment of Ardon is wholly accurate.

Probably rashly, I'm calling time travel of some sort as the reason why. We already know that spirits such as the Guardian exists outside of linear time.

This opens up another possibility. 45 himself may be from the future. He owes a lot of money (and has been shown making payments). Why would he owe anyone anything? Material costs of forging a body comes to mind. Who would build it? A dwarf adventurer who runs a magic shop and provides enchanted goods, and who has a friendly relationship with 45 appears to be a strong candidate.

And the problem with that is that 45 didn't want to kill Ardon. He wanted to see him die, but 45 wasn't going to make it happen. 45 was merely watching. And Ardon had to manipulate him to even do that much.

on the bright side, he got them a kickarse tombstone.

not personally mind you. but they probably would have only gotten normal tombstones if he didn't kill them at that specific time.

I'm going to say.. Even if Odi was brought back, he probably wouldn't know Ardon had killed him. He would know about the Spirit, as he found that out while not brainwashed. Except the Orc-Chief-Guy was snapped out of his mind control, and then very confused for the half second until he died. Odi would simply remember blacking out as the rock heated up, and nothing else. How would he distinguish that from dying?

Can someone who is a bit more familiar with DnD stuff explain this strip? I'm vaguely familiar with Vecna and Vecna related items, but not what they do exactly. Did the bartender steal one from a cult and that's why he's alive? Was he dead for a week? Did he steal it from beyond the grave?

He was dead for a weak because Dire killed him but, unlike with the other three that died this chapter, a raise dead ritual was actually able to bring him back. (The tweet that went with the comic that showed he was alive again said "Yes Raise Dead IS a real ritual.) Him dying was the reason Peanut was able to buy the B&B in the first place (as the goblin inherited it due to being the only living employee).

I guess inheritance laws don't take into account that people can come back to life, or maybe they do and its just not in favor of the formally deceased.

As for the Eye; I believe Terry's backstory was once one of the vote incentives, but I don't really remember.

Ah well. Thanks for the info. I don't follow the twitter or backstories. Seems strange to throw that stuff into the main comic and expect people to know what's going on.

feels like it's just supposed to be a one-off joke, not something plot-relevent at all. i doubt you'll need to understand it to enjoy the story moving forward.

I'm not really an expert (and don't have time to do the research right now), but I think the eye and hand of Vecna are powerful artefacts in one of the standard D&D settings (I want to say Greyhawk, but might be wrong). Presumably Terry stole the eye from the cult at some point and performed "the forbidden ritual" to hide it from them or keep them away somehow, and it (the ritual, not the eye) got broken when he died (I guess it protects him "for the rest of his life") or something.

The comic mentioned the Forbiddance ritual. I don't know what it does in 4e, but in 3.5, it prevented planar travel and damaged enemies entering a large area, such as a building.

4e drops the damage and adds scry blocking. And for the part relevant to "died and broke the ritual," the caster has to spend a healing surge every day to keep it going, until after a year and a day it becomes permanent. If he's the ritual caster and it's been less than a year and a day, him being dead for a week meant he couldn't spend the healing surges to maintain it so it ended.

Typing on my phone is tricky enough without doublechecking another page.
