Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
As the wheezing form of the dwarf splutters, he breathes slightly less quickly after the touch of the rat. He coughs, and blood comes out with spit to splatter on the ground near his mouth in a wash of swirling blood and bubbling spittle. It is dark and bubbling.
"Is he dead?"
I'd thank ye all fer rescuin' meh, but...oh yer a centar. He barely moves his head at Alala's nearest hoof. Me brathers 'r all dea-- he chokes again, spitting more blood. Leas' I 'spect. Okay, say what you want about the forum die roller. This is just PURE WIN right here. Jeridexeles definitely needs to get his claws upon that gem, and NOW!!!
As the dragon scoops up the gem, the dwarf audibly breathes a sigh of relief.

He gives himself over to a fit of coughing, and blood seems to ooze out of his body: his nose, his mouth, and from unhealed holes in his gaping chest. He heaves weakly, but can do little else than let go his hand upon what is revealed to be the broken stem of a lute.
Tai has certainly pieced together scraps of knowledge about the words he's heard regarding Niellere, the name cursemistress and what the late Steelheart has referred to as cursemakers. As the rat is thinking, it all comes back to him somewhat readily.
Spoiler: He remembers....
From Spoils of the Grey Waste:
...when hags cannot remain in their covens, they can be forced to undergo a transformation that aims to bring them close to Cegilune [patron Deity of all Hags and a denizen of the Grey Waste]. Very little is known about this process or how it is manifest, except for the following: These curses take many years, but will fully transform all hags, whether annis, sea and greenhags into a true form of their greatest desire; This process forces the manifestation of their vile spirit into a physical focus of their "choice" that represents the Moon in some aspect. It could represent a moonbeam, like a pole or a spear, or it could be a curved object or a necklace, or perhaps a silver-colored dress, and so on.
There is little choice for the hag in the focus, but it becomes a part of both her former self and her new chosen identity. In exchange for greater beauty and power, the transformed Hag becomes a bearer of Cegilune's powerful curses. She must find ways to work her curses upon others every month or succumb to the enveloping wrath of the goddess. The original nature of the hag can be discerned in the aspect of curses she manifests: The green hags work their curses through fell song and music; the sea hags stalk the waters and rivers, bestowing their subtle magics upon those sentient beings that are easy to influence; the dreaded annis whatever paths lead to greater and darker powers. The hags, upon "complete" transformation, become cursemistresses, or sometimes referred to more generally as cursemakers.
The name cursemistress is a misrepresentation of the truth, however, as their curses actually stem from their attendant focus. Should its owner perish (as hags are like to do knowing their nature), this object will serve as an anchor for the Hag's soul. Any creature that physically touches the object within eight moon cycles following the focus-bearer's death risks a powerful possession by the cursemistress. Should the focus be a weapon, one must be especially cautious, as the last creature injured by the weapon is also prone to potential possession.
There was a note in the margins of the page and it read:
It is this writer's opinion that it is better to kill any creature injured by the focus of a cursemistress out of mercy, as this possession can be excruciatingly painful for both the recipient and its companions. In my travels here, our very own Cleric of Yondalla was thus possessed and managed to mentally scar or kill many of my lifelong friends and traveling companions before she was exorcised of the Hag's horrific spirit. I dare not write any more on this subject as it is still painful to recall.
The safest precaution against the focus of a cursemistress is a sheathe (if possible) and many layers of large, heavy wool cloth, sail cloth or soft leather, then multiple wards against evil, especially anti-curse charms. The only truly safe way, however, to rid yourself of such a focus is to reforge the object at near-volcanic temperatures with the presence of a Divine Circle. In our case, we...

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
When her lance struck flesh this time, Alala had been into the well-practiced routine: Drop the lance (it's faster than pulling it back out of someone's chest), spring a pace back, ready the chain and prepare to smash her skull if the lance strike hadn't been enough to take the fight out of her.
By the time she'd gotten her hands on her chain, it was abundantly clear that the lance blow was enough, what with Niellere disintegrating and everything. Alala took a moment to glance around - none of the party seemed to still be fighting. So she started by waving at Xylona, and then pointing to her throat, hoping the druid would be able to work out she wanted to be able to speak again. While she waits, she recovers the lance she'd been using. While she gives the sword an odd look, she doesn't attempt to retrieve it as well. Probably a little worried that it might try attacking her as well. Instead she busies herself checking the lance is still intact - one of the reasons she didn't have masterwork or enchanted lances is they just broke too often to be worth using expensive ones...Currently Running:

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
As Jerid and Tai start talking, Alala waves for their attention, points rather urgently at her ears, and then glares accusingly over at Xylona. Silence prevents incoming sounds as well as outgoing - she's effectively deaf either for several minutes or until someone removes the spell for her. Still, she does at least retain sufficient presence of mind to back away from the others a little, so none of them accidentally hit the silent zone around her.
At times like these, she can't help but wish she'd learned how to read lips... although even if she had, she'd probably find it hard to apply to a rat and a dragon...Last edited by whoiam; 2015-10-14 at 05:15 AM.

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Xylona frowns. Jerid, I would prefer it if you didn't even joke about killing my companion. Perhaps it's better to watch her in case. She looks around, to Tai in particular. ...Unless someone wants to offer to injure themselves instead, in which case we can just worry about that person.
She shakes her head and continues, Anyways, I'm sure I can devise a container with a few minutes' time that can hold it reliably. In the meantime, do any of the bodies have anything useful on them?
Xylona looks around, and tells Bia to look for...rocks? Rocks. She finds one, gives it to her companion to smell, and the dog runs off into the brush to find some. The Dryad busies herself with collecting rocks and returning to place them near the sword, promptly ignoring the rest of the group.

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Omar efficiently searches the bodies of the fallen people, and he finds nothing remaining of Niellere. The remains of the dwarf reveals only a blood-spattered and official-looking document, badly taken out by what appears to be un-moveable black spots.

Upon the rogue Sit, Omar manages to collect some material (that either he or Tai manages to easily recognize): 6x throwing bottles of Eyeflower Venom, Padded Leather armor that has a (powerful) aura about it, but seems like it is leaking magic. Neither Omar nor Tai cannot identify it, even magically, for some reason; A (damaged) Cloak of Blending which looks like it badly needs repair; Finally, Omar notices Sit is wearing Tempo gloves. On Ned the half-Troll, Omar finds a Ring of Disguise
Spoiler
The party, under Omar's direction, finds five dun emeralds, estimated by Tai to be about 2500 gold each, in the wreckage.
Finally, as they are about to leave the bodies, Omar spots a strange glint in ned the half-troll's throat. With the help of a sharp object, they manage to pry out a small, thumbnail-sized cylinder made of what appears to be amythest.
Spoiler: Loot Summary
6x Eyeflower Venom Throwing flasks: Contact or Inhaled poison. Fort DC 17 2d4 Wis damage primary and secondary.
Cloak of Blending: give +10 Stealth checks, and once repaired, it will also give a +10 disguise to not be noticed.
Tempo Gloves: 2x/day, extra move action (max once per hour).
A mysterious set of damaged padded leather armor that defies Identification.
Ring of Disguise: like the Hat of disguise, but in a ring form. Alter appearance as with a Disguise Self spell. As part of the disguise, the ring can also be changed in appearance to any semi-precious or non-precious stone or metal, shiny or not.
An amythest - requiring a good Knowledge check from Tai.

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Tai recognizes it as a gem that is among the type used by necromantic growing rituals. He does not, however, figure much more out other than it's *not* a regular item. He knows it is arcane in nature.
As Omar concludes his search, Xylona produces several scraps of paper and lays them down for the others to see.

Where possible, Alala had helped out during the 'looting' phase (while keeping her distance from the sword). By the time they'd finished, the Silence spell had worn off, so she could talk and hear again, yay!
...Sadly, she can't help out much with examining the gem (it just looks like non-slave stuff to her, after all, she's never even owned jewellery before). Likewise, while she can look at the map fragment (and does), she really hasn't got anything to add to the conversation. She knows what maps are, sure, but she's never gotten to use one before (and consequently has no idea how to use one, or even how atypical this one might be...)Currently Running:

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Tai
The rat takes the torn and burned paper in hand. To his sharp mind, it is almost as good as complete. He waxes pedantic, as he explains it to the others.
"First, one must understand that dwarves are extremely formal. We know they are holding a moot, so the most likely salutation would be "mootsmen" or something like that."
He moves on to the first few lines and says, "With writing they like to sound formal instead of simple. So we need a few important terms. 'demonstrating within this letter, to show our... ,' and the Dwarves like commitment, and it hasn't come up yet. So it's likely to be here. Of course, being dwarves, they may just as well have spoken of 'exemplifying' and 'devotion,' but you get the same sense. There are more synonyms for these concepts in dwarven than in any other language I can think of.
"You did a good job translating that middle, and dwarves don't like words like Important when they could use something related to architecture. So Integral might be a good word, or perhaps 'key,' which for a dwarf as often signifies 'keystone' as the key to a lock. Again, however, the sense is the same. I think the gist of the letter is very clear.
"Now as for numbers, dwarves are painfully precise – one must be, where architecture or engineering are concerned, so it carries through to other aspects of their culture and language. Consequently, we can only guess. But Abdul said something about it being fifty years since the last moot, so I say it's a fair guess to put a hundred fifty years. Now, a dwarf would not have written, 'and fifty, as that would signify a decimal: 100.50 years. That would just sound silly.
"A note like this contains multiple imperatives, so the writer will conclude with a closing to soften the tone. 'Respectfully,' perhaps? And it will be Moot councilman"

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Alala, with very little idea of how maps worked, hadn't the faintest idea what answer Xylona might be looking for. Still, she could probably help with the other point... "So how are we planning to move the sword? I can empty the main compartment of my haversack into my bag of holding, it should be big enough to hold the sword then. We should be able to push it in without having to touch it too much..." Obviously, the Centaur was still more than a little uneasy about that weapon. So sticking it a little bit outside of the mortal world had to be the safest option, right...?

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Xylona
Actually, Xylona says, we may have enough rocks to do this... She looks at the small pile of rocks she has collected with Bia's help, and reaches into her pack and pulls out a bag of sand and a foul-smelling vial of liquid. All I need to do is shape this sand and make more of it...
She shakes out some shapesand and, after focusing on it, manages to coat the sword in a thin layer of this magical sand, and appears to have a little extra left over. She then pulls out a round pan from her pack, and puts the rocks in it one by one. She opens the vial and drips the liquid on the rocks, which start to make tiny cracks and fractures, and by the time she's done with the bottle she has a large pan of more sand. She scoops the remaining Shapesand into the pan, and her eyes fill with the magical glow of energy. After a few minutes, the sand looks unchanged, but the liquid has evaporated, and the awful smell has become worse.
She concentrates upon the sand, and it jumps out of the pan and forms a solid coating around the sword. The smell will go away, with time. But it should be safe to handle.
Tai
So, I think it imperative that we continue on to the moot, with haste.
Perhaps, we should bring the dwarf's remains, as well, so the mootsmen may see what happened to him."
Agreed. Does anyone have a means of preserving bodies? Jerid, maybe that large horde of items could help, or Alala? Did you learn anything from being a Gladiator towards the means of preserving?Last edited by ~Corvus~; 2015-10-17 at 04:29 PM.

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
As Vutha waited patiently where he was for the silence to wear off, he could hear nothing, though looking at the group he spotted one looking at an amethyst-like gem and others looking at parts of a map that they pulled from the tent.
As the silence wore off, he walked toward the group while muttering something to his sword in front of his lips. It quickly retracted back to its toy like stature and he sheathed it.
He walked in between both parts and first looks at the amethyst gem
Spoiler: rolls(1d20+8)[21] arcana knowledge roll
(1d20+8)[25] psionics knowledge roll
he then looks over at the map parts and realizes something about the map and points it out without touching the map except lightly with his armor as to not destroy it while he's still big, "That flag there is the flag of the Setting Sun school. The orange scrap of Paper however is showing their temple which follows a Sine-Curve pattern as you see here."
He looks back over at the amethyst and says, "by the way, that gem there is a Lozenge of Regrowing. Normally though it's found only on My more well-known brethren's bodyguards. it's used to accelerate and capture the essence of the dying form that has it on their person. This essence could then be used to heal another body or in fact, revive them altogether. Most Rethi, my brethren, who can revive themselves in this manner are ones that end up having the most bodyguards to revive themselves quicker. It does use a mixture of Necromancy and Metacreative energies to make it, however, how to exactly use it, I have yet to figure out."Last edited by blackwind1kaze; 2015-10-18 at 07:47 PM. "Oh! Uh... let me look." Jerid digs into his haversack. Watt had nearly talked his ear off about the contents. One of them had to be useful in this situation. His claw wraps around a particular bottle bearing the label Unguent of Timelessness. "This should do the trick." He holds the bottle an inch away from Xylona's palm. "I expect to be compensated for this." Jerid nevertheless places the bottle into her hand.

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Xylona nods. I have some cloth, so if we wrap his body in it and place the ungulent in the cloth, it should do the trick. In few minutes, the remains of the dwarf have been as well-preserved as they can be and are stored in Alala's offered Bag of Holding.
Xylona consults with the others regarding the map and their position, and it is quickly understood they are near the fork that either leads north to further mountain-towns or West to the great river that leads further west.
One more thing: We have a share of items from this group. Does anyone want these items, or shall we just leave them here? I, for one, would be okay with that gem so I may study it. Perhaps I can find a way to restore my tree.

[assuming the others have told Alala what the magic items do]
"Well, the cloak and gloves sound cool, but I've already got some..." And much as she'd love the stealth and movement boosts, they probably weren't worth sacrificing strength and saves for... "Can't think I'd have much use for the rest. Not gonna wear armor if you can't tell me what the magic on it does, and by the time I'm in poison throwing range of someone, I'm also in charging range - it's usually quicker just to stick a lance in'em. Still, I have got a bit of space left, so tell you what - anything the rest of you don't have a use for, we can pad my bag of holding out with it. I'm sure those pretty stones will be worth something next time we're near a friendly market..."Currently Running:

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Omar looks skeptically at the bottles of poison...
"I can, uh, spit out all the nasty stuff I need... I suppose there might be a 'friendly market' in Dwarf Town. Assuming the dwarves are fine with Bromin choosing a random stranger as his replacement with his dying request...""Do Driderettes buy their legwarmers in bulk?"

Tai
"Mhm." The rat shrugs. "The gems are worth gold, if creatures such as us can find those who will trade. Who knows? Maybe being able to offer one might save a life some day. Why don't each of us take one.
The poison . . . if no one else wants it, I could make some use of it, perhaps. I'll put it in my pouch.
SpoilerBecause creatures with lowered will are more susceptible to charms, suggestions, and such.
I'd think one of our meleers should have the gloves and can make the best use of them.
I'll take a closer look at the padded armor tomorrow.
"Spoiler. . . when I can prepare identify

"While the extra movement would be nice for me, I can live with the ring of disguise", Vutha says after hearing what the items are.
Spoiler: GM OOCWould the Ring dull my aura while it's active or will my aura still be in play?

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
Xylona nods at the group's requests. "Perhaps we shall have time to sell any other gear in the next town before we head into the Dwarven mountains?." She also notes that since they'll be heading into humanoid areas again, she'd like some help touching up her makeup and disguises.
Spoiler: OOC note
I do expect, of course, that you all used some form of disguise!
The party travels South, along the road, for rest of the day. When they reach the fork, they begin to see various cage-carts driven by horses and mules headed north and then west to the fork. They carry humans and dwarves of various kinds that look sad or stoic, respectively. As the party continues, they see the occasional mounted and well-armored person holding a glaive and with a sword of some kind sheathed at their side. Although they all give you helmeted examinations and slow down to fiddle with something upon their saddle-belts, they do not stop you.
As the party make their way into town, the group notices that there is a lively amount of movement going on. There are armed guards on the outskirts of town, and they stop the lot of you at the gates. You recognize their armor as the same kind that you've seen patrolling on the roads, and now that you're not moving it becomes clearer what they're wearing.
Spoiler
(Ignore the crenellations)
The man tells you all, Ye all don' look like slavers, now, an' we're having an auction 'round here. And...Wha's a centaur doin here? You peoples all goin' to sell it or summin'? Don' look chained. Where'd ya find it?

Re: At the Edge of Humanity {IC}
As the guards stopped the group to examine them, Alala simply stood near the back of the group, face eyes averted, staring quietly at the floor. There were more interesting parts she could have played than just acting like she was still a slave... but they probably wouldn't have been very convincing. After all, she'd been a slave most of her life. Impersonating, say, a travelling minstrel would have been far less convincing...
As soon as the party had started seeing other traffic on the road (and didn't decide to kill them to maintain secrecy), Alala had gotten into the part. Mostly this just involved returning her weapons to her bag of holding, and doing the same for her armor, so she looked like a saddled centaur dressed in rags that had once been furs. Couldn't risk one of the carts reporting an armed Centaur, after all. Not if she was going to pretend to be a slave when she got to town...Last edited by whoiam; 2015-10-22 at 09:09 PM.
