Default Rate the Song Revival Thread

We used to have one of those. Don't really know what happened to it.

Anyway, the premise should speak for itself but in case it doesn't, let me give you the down low: The person above you has posted a link to a song, it is now your task to rate it on a scale of 0 to 10 based on your inclination towards or against it. If you can leave a short comment as to why you rated the way you did, that'd help, but it isn't totally necessary.

That done the crosshairs now land on you, and it's your turn to have your taste in music placed under the microscope. Go to YouTube or DailyMotion or Soundcloud or wherever and fetch us a song you like. Give it about a day and see how it holds up under scrutiny. Sound good?

A couple of ground rules first.
    • Posting a song with NSFW lyrics? Kindly tag it as such
    • Let's try to keep it under 10 minutes. I know that gives progressive rock the shaft but what can you do?
    • Y'all know the three post rule, right? Right
    • It would save some time if you included the artist and track name in your post, too. We have enough tabs open as it is

Now that the boring disclaimers are out of the way, I volunteer to get us started.

Hmm, I would rate it a 6. I liked her voice, It was pleasant to listen to, but it just lacked a noteworthy or memorable detail for me to latch on to, I guess. I would not mind hearing this at a coffee house or something.

Jim Croce - Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)

One of my favorite songs from this guy, what do you think?

7/10. Gorgeous 60s-70s era folk rock. Put me in the mind of Don McLean's "American Pie"

Interesting. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. Nice and mellow, and not boring: 6/10.

Music to approach things in slow motion to.

In all seriousness it's decent, but unambitious, fuzz rock. It's competent, it's pleasant. The vocals are a bit nasally, though. It's a tad incongruous. But the groove is rock solid. I can't help but feel that in a higher tempo and with less distortion it could make a fairly neat bassline for a post-punk song.

8/10. Though it's not really my kind of music, I can't argue that it had good rhythm while remaining pleasant for my ears. The more I raised the volume, I discovered new, subtler sounds, which was pretty interesting. It also reminded me of the soundtrack In Duet. Overall pretty solid yet spontaneous and pleasant. I can see this being played in a lot of places where it'll set a positive atmosphere.

Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise. Tell me what you think?

    5/10.
I'm not much of a Springsteen fan, and this track hasn't done anything anything to change my mind. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but equally there's nothing much positive that stands out about it either. Kind of fades into the background after a while.

I'm always a sucker for good post-rock, and the song had a classic rock/indie rock vibe that it danced around with a few times too. Is there anything else by these guys you'd point me towards?

If you like the song, I recommend you listen to the whole album. It's great music to put on and just relax to.

8/10. I really like the jazzy rhythm and smooth sound. It just works so well. And that piano solo that kicked in around 3:30 ... mmmmmm ...

Hmm time for a change of pace!

Any less for Joy Division is impossible. The quality of that particular recording could be better. Ian Curtis is, possibly, rock's greatest frontman. Distinct, dynamic and charismatic (in his own ways.) And that bass! That bass that codified how underground rock music would be defined from then on. Those who said Joy Division would define the next ten years of music understated it. We're still in its shadow.

The artist was decent, not a song I would have chosen to listen to, but not horrible either. I give it an average rating.

6/10. I'm not in a very folksy mood right now though. The thing that really bugged me was that the "robots" felt like they were entering uncanny valley territory. I think Kraftwerk executes that particular idea better.
