Default Galactic Mercenaries, Chapter 1: A New Beginning (IC)

    Ord Mantell

    3 ABY

In a seedy corner of a shady spaceport called Vanguard Valley, set into a secluded valley formed by towering mountains, sits a small cantina. A dim neon sign flickers above the door, stating the name of the place as The Vanguard Pit.

The Valley itself attempts to appear as a legitimate settlement, but anyone familiar with the criminal underground knows better. Vanguard Valley is a haven town, where those on the run can lay low for a spell, no questions asked. In addition to docking options ranging from free and anonymous to secure and concealed, the spaceport boasts a community-owned, functional shipyard.

Many individuals and companies have attempted to lay claim to the yard over the years, but inevitably have abandoned it. Time and again, the yard had been left vacant and unclaimed. Today, it stands open and available for anyone who wants to make their own repairs or modifications without having to pay for the use of a professional yard. In return, anyone who uses the yard contributes to its upkeep.

Today, though, a small group of individuals has landed in Vanguard Valley for a reason completely separate from laying low or making cheap(er) changes to their respective vessels. Today, they come to meet an old friend thought dead. Or, at least, someone claiming to be her.

The inside of the Vanguard Pit is remarkably clean, if dimly lit. A few seedy patrons give you a once over as you enter, but no one bothers you. Per the instructions given in the message, you walk to the bar and order an obscure drink. The bartender nods knowingly and produces a flavorful beverage seated on a napkin.

The napkin itself has a room number written on it, as well as the security code for the door to that room. Heading to the back, around the corner, you find the room in question and punch in the code. The door whisks open and you step into an itermediate room. The door closes behind you before the next door opens, revealing a comfortably lit room dominated by a meeting table. The table itself is surrounded by padded chairs. In the chair furthest from the door, with her feet propped up on the table, is a familiar smiling face.

Avaris Ryt smirks at you as you enter, and motions for you to have a seat...

A small starfighter comes to a smooth landing in an open free dock. As the black and red craft, which appears to be nothing more than a cockpit and laser cannons strapped on to two massive engines, touches down, the canopy opens and a young-looking man hops out, tossing his flight helmet into the seat as he does. Meanwhile, a hatch opens on the bottom of the ship, and an R2 unit with a color scheme matching the ship drops out onto the ground.

Wally hops off of the craft as the canopy closes, and straightens his black nerfleather jacket (with read trim, of course). As he straps his holster onto his back, carrying his trusty carbine, folded for easy carry, he nods to his R2 unit with a smile, "Stay with the ship, Red. I'll keep the comm open."

Red replies with a series of beeps and whistles in the affirmative, and re-enters her hatch, connecting with the ship once more. Wally makes his way through the starport to the cantina where the message stated to be. He raises an eyebrow at all the cloak and dagger dealings, but doesn't voice any opposition.

As the door slides open, and Avaris can finally be seen, Wally shakes his head and grins, "Avaris Ryt. Aren't you supposed to be dead?" He declines the seat, instead opting to stand near the wall, where he can easily see the door.

As the Tor'kal lands, it's engines setting it gently down before shutting off, the canopy opens and emerges a black armored Mandalorian woman, armed with a sniper rifle on her back. She hops down and takes off her helmet, black hair flowing out. She had some makeup on, mostly red and pink, but nothing too complex, as if she cares about her appearance, but not enough to stress over it. She begins to walk out, making no stops on the way. As far as scum hideouts goes, this was bad. Then again, she hates must underworld hideouts, mostly because there's a fine line between heroic criminals and mercenaries and vile scum. She wanted to get her time here over with.

As she arrives at the bar and sits down, setting her helmet down next to her. She orders the drink, quickly chugs it, puts her helmet back on, and then leaves, going to head to the room she was directed to. Once she's at the door, she punches in the code before entering the room. She sits down next to Wally, nodding at them both while extending her greetings, first to Wally, "Hello, Ruusaan of clan Ordo and... she then turns her head to "dead" woman "Su cuy'gar. Literally

Wally nods to the Mandalorian woman in return as she sits down, "Wally. Nice to meet you."

As she rattles off in Mandalorian, Wally activates his translation protocols, attempting to understand her words. While he knows he's heard it before, his processor crashes before it can pinpoint the meaning. Need to get that looked at...

Avaris chuckles at Wally and brings a finger to her lips, "Shhhhhh. I am dead."

She looks up and smiles at Ruusaan as she arrives and sits down. She chuckles again at the traditional greeting and nods, "As are you. I'm glad to see it. We're still waiting on a few more, so enjoy your drinks."

Eve had hitched a ride to this dive on someone else's ship, so she made sure to bring all her things with her as she stepped out. True, she didn't expect Arik to steal her things... but the months since Avaris' death hadn't been kind to any of them. So it was best to be prudent.

Eve dragging two wheeled cases along with her looked surprisingly like a young noblewoman off on holiday. When coupled with the pair of electrobinoculars around her neck, it definitely looked like she'd aimed for a safari somewhere... and missed, horribly.

The only thing spoiling that particular impression wasn't her demeanor (generally friendly) or her expression (a faint, slightly absent smile), but the compact Missile Launcher hanging off its strap against her back. That wasn't standard holiday fair...

By the time she'd reached the back room, there were three people ahead of her. Avaris, assumed dead. There was a Mandalorian. Eve's memory reported she'd seen her before. A grand total of 3 times. No words exchanged. Another of Avaris' old associates, then. A sniper, by the looks of her rifle. Interesting. And the third...

Eve's head slowly began tilting to the right as she stared at the three around the table.

So, her brother's body was still active. That was... not unexpected, really. Replica Droids turned up so rarely that she doubted the Empire would have thrown him away. But they would have memory wiped him after the Inquisitor's death, so the person ahead of her... wouldn't be the brother she'd known.

Still, delaying the inevitable wouldn't help the situation any. She then draws a rather exaggerated breath, and addressed the others. "Is this the first meeting of the Reported Dead club? I know three of us have 'died' already. How about you, verd? Are you one of the dead, as well?"

If she was right, Wally would be surprised how she would have known he was dead. If she was wrong... well, conceding the initiative to her brother wasn't that great of a loss...

Vanguard Valley. It had been almost a year since he was last here. Scyle was nursing an injury, she'd stay on the Night Mask, something to do with a Zabrak -- he never did get the full story. Nilatz would be waiting inside with the quarry, he and Yelzyn would touch down in the yellow pallor before dusk.

UB3 looked over at the sprawling port, his eyes coming to rest upon the cantina. The small transport he had rented passage on was just touching down. He took a small cylinder from his pocket and twisted its head twice, he heard a small tone sound twice indicating the frequency his Comlink was tuned to had successfully changed.

:::CCRU1 time and status until arrival?:::

    :::~#^*+~€ŁĄ~=%:::

A solid wall of encoded data slammed into his com, encapsulated in thousands of micro variable tones indecipherable and indistinguishable to his organic auditory system, rich with information, tantalizingly pregnant with information beyond his current capabilities.

Even if he could pick apart the varied tones, if he was able to ride the rising and diving waves of data crashing against his senses, even then it was doubtful his limited organic brain would be able to process the multitude of information generated in response to his simple inquiry.

:::CCRU1 initiate OLI protocols, and repeat last transmission:::

:::OLI, OLI... O, O, Op. Pur. Ray. Tur. UB3. Stay. Tus. Dee. Lay. B1. You. Nits... :::

:::CCRU1 maintain OLI protocols, and state simply, estimated time of arrival.:::

    :::Un. No. Own. Dee. Lay.:::

Arik was running late. It couldn't be a technical issue. He had just given the ship a through diagnostic with CCRU1 and Niffer. Whatever it was holding them up they were close enough for UB3 to maintain contact with CCRU1.

UB3 kept the com with CCRU1 open, switching it into passive listen mode, and flipped the switch on his collar, opening the broadcast link to his TraVoc unit.

Stepping out of the transport he scanned the ships arrayed before the Catina. There. He could see the ghost of the Void Whisper he remembered stepping off onto the very same ground he was walking on now. He shook his head a bit to clear his thoughts. Weak. He mustn't dwell on such things. What was done could not be undone.

That was yesterday. Today. Today the Void Whisper was lost to the void, and in her former birth a garishly painted A-Wing. He allowed his eyes to linger a bit on the red and black ship, it had been heavily modified.

He paused a moment, mentally drinking in the vessel, every strut, bolt, crop, rivet, he noted the estimate weights, the armaments the needed thrust requisite to break atmosphere. The calculations helped to ground him in the now. Cleared his mind. He found comfort in the arc of the durasteel frame, a poetry so few appreciated.

He made his way into the cantina. His skin crawled under his environmental suit. So many organics in such a small space. Each a cypher with its own chaotic processes, it's secret thoughts, it's foreign alien and inscrutable calculus that dictated, often irrational and illogical action. Anyone might murder you for any number of reasons known only to him.

He quickly made his way to the bar, he was careful to follow the procedures dictated to the letter. Once the drink proffered was in hand he read the instructions and made his way towards the back, leaving the drink behind on the bar while shredding the napkin between his hands as he walked.

At the door he paused. His hand lightly trailed the hilt of his blaster, holstered at his hip. He hesitated. He saw Yezlyn's face for an instant. His real face. Naked. It was the first and last time he saw those eyes. There was something in them that still haunted his sleep. He saw his hands repeateedly forming the same phrase over and over in Ubenial as his mouth contorted in a silent gasp. "Why?"

UB3 raised those same hands before his face. Those same gloves. That was yesterday. There was nothing to be gained be dwelling on what could not be changed. You can't bring back the dead.

He punched in the code to the door.

The door slid open to reveal Avaris Ryt. His brow knitted beneath his helmet. You can't bring back the dead...

UB3 stumbled into the room, past a woman who looked to be on holiday, and took a seat furthest from the four occupants. He began to repeatedly run his hands over the inside of his wrists and then to the outside of his hand, along knife edge. While glancing nervously at the occupants before finally resting his gaze on Avaris.

Only one word escaped, a terse chirp piercing the silence and punctuated by a harsh beep.

    :::How?:::

Wally stands from his leaning position almost immediately as Eve enters, his face a frozen mask of shock as his processor reroute power from his facial movement servos to attempt to rectify the data his ocular sensors are providing. He manages to funnel some power away after a brief moment in order to speak, "Eve? Is that...how?"

When she speaks, however, his system starts to sort itself out, and he tilts his head at her, "I belive my technical designation was , 'Missing, presumed dead.' You, on the other hand..."

He steps towards her, scanning her chassis as best he is able without blatantly revealing their nature. To an organic, it might seem as if he wants to embrace her.

So... he had escaped with his memories intact. Huh. Well, she had to give him credit for that. She hadn't even managed to get him a warning... Must have run when her transmission cut off. Things wouldn't have ended so well if he'd still been around when the stormies came through.

"Mine was 'found on a pile of corpses, assumed dead'. Most of the blood was not, however, mine." Eve did have blood - in her synth-flesh layer, of course - and a standard issue artificial heart to keep it circulating. She had to raid a medical supplies store to keep her reservoirs topped off every once in a while.

At least she didn't have to worry about picking up the wrong blood type.

"I returned to the ship an hour later. When there was no sign of you, I assumed the stormtroopers had surprised you before they came after us. I am... pleased... to find that this was not the case."

Finally, Eve shakes her apparent astonishment, and takes a seat as well, placing the missile launcher on the table in front of her so it won't dig into her back as she sits.

"To answer your question, yes, we do know one another. We are... siblings. Although it has been some years since we last saw one another. The reason why... ought to be fairly obvious from our reactions to one another."

UB3 followed the exchange between these two humans, "Wally" and "Eve". There was something about the woman, something familiar. It was apparent these two had a working if not familial relationship. There was another woman. A black helmet sat on the table before her.

UB3 examined the armor intently from his position, seeing if it proffered any clues as to the organic currently residing within it. It seemed he would have to wait before knowing why it was that they had been summoned and how. How had Avaris avoided death.

He returned his gaze to the second woman, designation Eve. His eyes couldn't help but linger on the weapon on the table before her. Then it clicked. Miniaturized standard long range explosive delivery system, magazine fed automatic loading system, each containing four two stage rocket propelled explosive heads containing polyhedral durasteel granules designed for maximum damage to soft targets, including lightly armored vehicles, droids, structures and of course organics. He had seen this weapon before. The same day...

His gaze returned to Avaris. The same day she had died. Organic designation Eve, was a passenger aboard Arik's ship that day. His eyes released Avaris and flitted back towards the woman Eve. As he continued to nervously rub his hands in the same arcane pattern.

His glances safely obscured by his helm, he returned to examining the other woman, the fit, shape and form of her armor matched known images and descriptions of Beskar'gam the unique armor known to be utilized by the Mandalorians. If this was in fact an actual suit of Mandalorian armor, and not simply a vainity modification, that would mean this woman was a Mandalorian. Which meant she was dangerous. Additionally if it was, in fact, authentic armor he must procure a sample of the material for metallurgical study.

Ruusaan didn't get up from her chair, but she did turned around to face the newcomers. Two sibling humans and what appeared to be a droid were who she was presented with. She understood binary, so she could make out that speech. The humans, or at least what appeared to be humans, appeared to have also been declared dead, but were really alive. Combine that with what the female asked and the mutual acquaintance's case and there seemed to be a connection that Ruusaan was contradicting. "Am I the only one here who wasn't supposedly dead?"

"Yeah, like she said. She's my sister."

Wally paces back to his spot on the wall, leaning against it once more. He glances over at his sister, a list forming in his memory of questions he needs her to answer, as well as speculations of his own. After few seconds, he recompiles it into a spreadsheet. Easier to keep track of, that way.

He lets out an exaggerated sigh and shakes his head, "I'm glad you're alive, Eve. We have some catching up to do. You're not getting your carbine back, though." He pats the butt of the blaster slung across his low back, the one he took from Eve's stash so long ago, that had kept him safe on so many hunts.

"Avaris Ryt, resurrected and I perfect health, religions have been started on less," he smiled.

"Sorry I'm late, did I miss anything?" He asked, slouching into one of the padded chairs and putting his feet up, "I really meant to be here earlier, but I had to make my losses back first, couldn't let that sullustan walk away with all my hard earned credits you know."

He winked and shifted slightly so he wasn't sitting in his blaster.

UB3 relaxed somewhat seeing Arik enter. If Arik were here that would mean that the Ardent Wing, CCRU1, and the workshop were well and arrived intact. At least he hoped so. He noticed Arik's left eye seemed to blink out of synch with the right, as he shifted slightly in his seat.

Even under the weight of the spreadsheet, Wally gets a warning signal from the look Avaris is giving him. He glances at Eve a moment before looking back. Another question to add to the list: Does Avaris know of Eve's, and thus his own, true nature? Dangerous to have too many know. Of course, some allies in the know would make things easier. Hell, without Red, he would have had limited options for his own repairs...

Binary is being emitted. Wally focuses on the sound. It's slow, plodding. It always hurts his processors to have to clock down to such speeds in order to comprehend binary when it is "spoken" at the rate a biological can understand. A third droid in the group, though? In an Ubese bodysuit? That's an oddity in and of itself.

Zev hurriedly paces into the cantina, and immediately approaches the bar with purpose. He impatiently taps his fingers lightly on the bar counter while waiting to make eye contact with the bartender, and sighs to himself.

Late, as usual. Damnit! I just had to try that new "shortcut" past Eriadu. So stupid!

After getting off to a later-than-intended start on the day, Zev's attempts to expedite his hyperspace travel to Vanguard Valley backfired, and now he was very late. Leaving Sinner (his nickname for S19-R, his S19 astromech droid) aboard his ship, as soon as he landed in one of the free anonymous docking bays, Zev became solely focused on following through the protocol of the transmission he had received.

After finally ordering his drink and proceeding to the room (drink still in hand) he hesitates a moment before entering in the code.

Is there any way this is real? ... well, I guess there's one way to find out.

He enters the code and strides purposefully into the room, seeing a number of people gathered, some more familiar-looking than others, and there, sitting in the furthest chair...

Zev immediately cracks a wide smile and exclaims with an excited and somewhat bewildered tone:

"well I'll be damned! Gotta say Avaris, I just couldn't believe it, but sure enough, here you are!

What the hell happened? I mean, I saw the collision, and... well, we all just... you know. So what the hell happened?!"

Avaris cracks a wide smile at Zev as finally makes his appearance, "You made it! Now sit down and shut up."

Once everyone is seated, Avaris stands and addresses the room, "Six of you. Six answered the call. Half as many as I contacted, more than I thought actually would show up." She sighs before continuing, "First and foremost, the answer on everyone's mind: How did I survive? Indeed, the Snow Hawk was destroyed in the collision. I, however, was not aboard it. With some help, I'd managed to get the ship rigged to be run by one person. Once I had it set for collision? I ran like hell to the last escape pod. Managed to jettison just before impact. Spent the last year, almost a year, in hiding, getting a few affairs in order. I'd thought about reaching out before, reforming the Hawks, but I think it's probably best I don't. The Empire thinks they killed me. Might as well not give them a reason to hunt down everyone I've ever been in contact with by proving them wrong."

She spreads her arms, gesturing at the group, "That said, I'm not out of the game, just yet. I wanted to call upon some of my best and brightest to start to rebuild. A new team, new rules, etc. I'm here to act as a guide and benefactor, but the major decisions would be left up to you. I'm not interested in being the face of an organization, anymore."

Pausing for a moment, she smiles at the assembled rogues, "So. What do you say?"

"Best and brightest huh," Arik replied, "so if you're not going to be the face of the organization, who is? It's a different galaxy out there now, got any contacts in the Empire who can help keep the heat off of us?"

"Rather Impressive." Ruusaan remarked after taking in the story. She considered the offer and eventually said "Sure, count me in, but yea... if you aren't leading this, then who is? I won't sign on if one of the others is leading and he or she turns out to be less than honorable." she looks to the others "No offense meant. Some of you seem like good people."

"Well that's the whole trick, isn't it," Arik said, "seem like a good person."

Zev quickly sits down at Avaris's request, and listens dutifully to her address. (In his excitement at seeing her alive, he had completely forgotten that he had arrived so late.)

He considers her proposal carefully, while examining the reactions of the others in the room.

    "Its... Ruusaan, Right?

He says, gesturing at the woman in full armor across the table, who's name he was struggling to recall.

"I think what Avaris was suggesting is that we would all be "leading." Kinda like a board of directors or something."

Looking over at Arik he adds:

"So, the way I'm seeing it, rather than Avaris being the face of the organization... we all are?"

He then looks back at Avaris, with a hint of uncertainty.

"Is that kinda what you meant? Or am I way off..."

    He shrugs and continues enthusiastically:

"Either way, I'm all for getting the Snow Hawks back together! I've been getting pretty bored lately, ya know, without you around!"

"More or less, yeah. The Snow Hawks' major flaw was a very visible leadership figure. One person running the show. A head of the snake, so to speak, to be cut off. I'm trying to avoid that, this time."

She meets everyone's eyes before continuing on, "I want a crew, small at first, who can work together as a team. An affiliated group, not a monarchy. As the group grows, leaders will emerge. Leadership roles will be assumed or solidified. Maybe we create a council of officers? A democracy? That's up to the group, really. So long as we avoid the mistake I made, of having a single target at the head."

The others had begun speaking, discussing the options, the organization, the advantages of decentralized and non personified leadership. It has its merits. It could work, a collective of sorts, but would require a level of synergy and collaboration, a level of trust and faith he doubted most were capable of. While Avaris, Arik, the Mandalorian and the newcomer spoke one phrase reverberated in his mind:

"I'd managed to get the ship rigged to be run by one person..."

"... just let the R6 here know what you'll need. I have a bit to discuss with Yezlyn while you work."

Foresight. He let his gaze linger on Avaris a few moments while they were speaking, wondering if she knew as he was installing the slave circuitry what she would be using it for.

He once again turned his gaze to those assembled, Arik, as seemingly equally comfortable with blaster bolts whizzing past or glibly chatting over a sabacc table was in his element. The newcomer likewise seemed at ease.

He noticed the Mandalorian seemed hesitant, cautious, that was good, patience and deliberation were admirable qualities -- ones that made an already dangerous individual possibly more so.

The brother and sister, Eve, and Wally seemed to be equally processing both the new information and proposal, as well as their recent reintroduction to one another.

He would wait. One mustn't be too hasty in such situations. It would be interesting to see what the others had to say, and hear a bit more about the proposed benefits countering the risks before proceeding.

Arik stayed quiet for a moment, then appeared to come to some kind of decision.

"Works for me," he said, "I assume you've got some kind of job lined up, otherwise you wouldn't have called us all together today."

Quietly, Eve reaches into one of her bags, pulling out a portable computer and switching it on. She spends a few moments typing quickly, an exercise that Wally and Avaris probably both know is just her showing off for the rest of the crowd. As she does so, a couple of data streams start up from 'the computer'.

    Spoiler: Wally
    Show

Stream 1 is unencrypted binary via a frequency she and Wally used to use. All it contains is a question: "Memory 14B900EF-7656-4088-8EAF-32C7F6028254?". Eve's clearly still a little worried about how much of Wally's old memories are intact, or she wouldn't have chosen something from so early on in his life to quiz him on...
    Spoiler: OOC

Yeah, you can assume that Eve and Wally know the IDs of some early files in each others' memories. Mostly for circumstances like this one, where they're trying to check each others' memories are still intact.

On the computer itself, she's quickly pulling up the details of one of her shell corporations. (It's not worth anything - yet - it's just a legitimate registered business that she takes some of her more legitimate wages through.) She gets into the list of directors - currently listing 'Eve (Unknown)' - pulls up the form for adding another director, and then passes the computer along to Ruusaan. "Add as many of your details as you are comfortable with being public knowledge - then plug a code cylinder - ideally - or other device with sufficient memory into the computer. It'll write a fresh corporate encryption key to the connected device. That key allows you to sign transactions or communications as being from a company director, and to perform business on the company's behalf. If any of you are lacking suitable devices, I do have a couple of spare code cylinders you can borrow. Pass the computer back to me when you're finished and I'll set it up again for the next person.

You may also wish to give some thought as to giving the business a new name. Unless you really want to be directors of the glorious mercenary company 'Wally's Core Cleaning Services'.
    "

Even in the years she'd thought Wally mind-wiped or scrapped, Eve hadn't forgotten him...

"Hey, I knew a couple of cleaning services that were no joke," Arik quipped.

"But if we're going to be doing that, probably don't want to advertise it," he added.

"Also, how is it you already have a shell company set up for this little endeavor? That's what I like about you Eve, you're just full of surprises."

"What made you think I set it up for this? Getting paid via shell company is a pretty standard setup for a reputable contractor in the core worlds. Once you're good enough to find work without having to pay a contracting agency their cut, you'll register your own company and work through that. I've registered about a dozen in my time as a freelance slicer.

You're getting one of my 'clean' ones, incidentally, not one I've used for private work before.

"That's... A lot more boring than what I had in mind," Arik replied, "let me keep my illusions next time wouldja?"

He pulled out a pazaak deck and began idly shuffling it with one hand.

    "Ace courier service?" he smirked.
