    Alignment: Any
    Hit Die: 1d6

    Class Skills:
The taboo mage’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int).
    Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) × 4
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier

    Weapon and Armour Proficiency
Taboo Magi are proficient with all simple weapons, but not with any kind of armour or shield.

    Taboo Casting
Taboo magi do not have a limited number of spells prepared or known. They know any spell on their list and can cast it at any time, and these spells have no material or experience components. However, they must avoid certain taboos while their spells are active, sharply limiting their usability. Just as invisibility ends when the subject attacks, so too do the taboo mage's spells when they commit that spell's taboo, when any subject of a beneficial spell commits the taboo, or when anyone commits a taboo against the recipient of a harmful spell (usually attacking them). It is always taboo to cast another copy of the same spell.

Otherwise, taboo magi cast spells just like sorcerers, except that the highest effective spell level after metamagic is that given on the table.

    Vow
Every fifth level, the taboo mage may choose one of the following feats, even if they're not exalted good:

    • Sacred Vow
    • Vow of Abstinence
    • Vow of Chastity
    • Vow of Nonviolence
    • Vow of Peace
    • Vow of Poverty

Different than I`d thought....and some of the Taboos do not "outweigh the advantages" but simply make casting the spell totally useless (Explosive Runes for Example, or Floating Disk (unless you Rules Lawyer to lie on it instead of standing, or to kneel^^).

Needs some finet tuning regarding the Taboos. Far too "pacifistic" overall for now.

But overall fun, if not the way I imagined.

The Vows are purely optional? Do you lose their benefit permanently if you break them or are doing evil like the original?

Later: An atom walks into a bar an asks the bartender “Have you seen an electron? I left it in here last night.” The bartender says, “Are you sure?” The atom says, “I’m positive.”

The "You can't write" taboos are mainly just to make having a runes spell annoying (you can't write anything down or you use your defenses) and also you can't cast a different runes spell. The floating disk one means that you can use it to carry things.

Yeah, there's a lot of "You can't attack", but the SMX spells can attack for you, and the hands can too.

    Cool.

Well, you don't have to take the feats. A lot of them allow you to atone, and sacred vow itself doesn't actually have any conditions.

Very cool. Don't really have any advice on mechanics, but it really does a good job of making magic interesting by attaching a cost to the spells. At the same time, the cost isn't so dire as to be punishing or so light as to be worthless.

Ah, you meant "make an attack roll".
Need to clarify that, as I read it as "take no offensive action", which would also remove all damage and many other spells.
A bit clarfied this might prove a really good class me thinks.

    Thanks

Well, that's not quite true. Directing a spell in progress isn't an attack and telling a summoned creature to attack definitely isn't, but many spells (such as wall of fire) are attacks when you cast them onto a creature, though just having one isn't an attack.

Another argument for my side: reword and clarify please.

I`ll reserve final judgement until then. ;)

So if wall of fire was used as a deterrent, say to block a hallway, but placed so that casting the spell doesn't hurt any creatues, but a critter chasing you runs though it, does that count as an attack?

An attack is "Any of numerous actions intended to harm, disable, or neutralize an opponent." However, "Causing harm indirectly is not an attack. Thus, an invisible being can open doors, talk, eat, climb stairs, summon monsters and have them attack, cut the ropes holding a rope bridge while enemies are on the bridge, remotely trigger traps, open a portcullis to release attack dogs, and so forth." Beyond this, sensible English definitions of attack should be used. Dropping a wall of fire on someone to kill them is an attack; dropping a wall of fire so that enemies won't go near it is not.

You've written: "It is always taboo to cast another copy of the same spell."

What is the time frame to cast a second copy of the spell assuming the first was deactivate or wore off? Never would not be an acceptable answer since that means you would only be able to cast each spell once.

I assumed within the same encounter (or 5 minutes after the other spell ended for out of combat stuff), but yeah, thats an important question.
Never is out, obviously, but whats the time frame?

Committing a taboo is only calculated against each spell for as long as that spell is active. A taboo is like attacking during an invisibility spell (by which I mean it's specifically called out in the text as being like attacking during an invisibility spell): there's nothing to stop you, it just breaks the invisibility. If you commit a taboo after the spell has already ended, oh well. No-one cares.

Comparing the phrasing of this with the beguiler, am I right to assume this class has no spells per day limitations? So all your spells are at will? If so, that's quite interesting. For the no more than one action per round taboos, does that include free actions?

Yes, all your spells are at will. Yes, your spell list is a fair chuck of the wiz/sor list. Free actions to talk should probably be excluded, but I'm not sure whether I should allow just any free action (staff of rapid barrage, anyone?). I dunno, what do you (and others) think?

As long as talking is not the Taboo of the spell it has to be allowed. Too much fun gone otherwise.

As for Fre actions in general: while it might be exploiteable, free actions should remain well...FREE. ^^

I like this concept. Seems like it would make a great summoner. It also seems like you'd want to grab as many metamagic feats as you could. Or at the very least heighten spell: There's no downside to heightening everything to the maximum level you could cast.

You still have not addressed this phrase: " It is always taboo to cast another copy of the same spell." as it is the last sentence under taboos. If you mean it is always taboo to cast another copy of the same spell while that spell is active, then you should state it clearly. Otherwise, you are literally saying that you can only cast each spell ONCE, which I'm pretty sure is not your intention.

Only, I literally just addressed that in this post:

If you commit a taboo after the spell has already ended, oh well. No-one cares.
Because the spell has ended already, it doesn't matter if you end the spell again later. Let's do a worked example:

    • I cast Fly. Let's call this iteration of Fly Fly1. (Fly1 enters stack. Fly1 leaves stack and the spell is cast.)
    • I attack. Fly1 ends. (Attack enters stack. Taboo trigger enters stack. Taboo trigger leaves stack and the spell ends. Fall enters stack. Fall leaves stack and I start falling. Attack leaves stack and I attack.)
    • I attack again. Fly1 ends again, but no-one cares. (Attack enters stack. Taboo trigger enters stack. Taboo trigger leaves the stack and does nothing. Attack leaves stack and I attack).
    • I cast another Fly. We'll call it Fly2. Fly1 ends for a third time, but it doesn't matter because Fly1 has already ended. Fly2 can't end, because it hasn't started yet (Fly1 ends at immediate action speed, on the basis that it's a triggered ability in the form of "When you commit a taboo"). (Fly2 enters stack. Taboo trigger enters stack. Taboo trigger leaves stack and nothing happens. Fly2 leaves stack and the spell is cast.)
    • I cast another Fly. We'll call it Fly3. Fly2 ends, and this matters. Fly1 ends for a fourth time, and that doesn't matter. Fly3 can't end, because it hasn't started yet. (Fly3 enters stack. Taboo trigger enters stack. Taboo trigger leaves stack and Fly2 ends. Fly3 leaves stack and the spell is cast.)

...and so on. In reality, you don't track whether spells that have already ended need to end again, and you probably don't really consciously use a stack. And if you can find a way to get a spell's resolution to trigger before the taboo that would end the spell, then... power to you, I guess?

It looks weird without clarification and all it does is confuse people.

Please explain all the fly spells that were cast since you can't cast fly more than once. Now I'm really confused.

"I cast another Fly. Fly2 leaves stack and the spell is cast.)"

Because I can't see how you can even cast Fly 2 until Fly 1 has ended.

You can, though. It just ends the old one. That's all that a taboo is. It doesn't mean you can't do it, only that it ends the old one. If the old one isn't active any more, that doesn't matter.

Ah, so its effectively M:TG`s old Rule for legendary Spells and Creatures.

New one comes in, old one leaves.

    Got it. ;)
A neutron walks into a bar and says, “How much for a beer?” The bartender says, “For you? No charge.”

Later: An atom walks into a bar an asks the bartender “Have you seen an electron? I left it in here last night.” The bartender says, “Are you sure?” The atom says, “I’m positive.”

Well, yes, though the reasoning is more like attacking during an invisibility spell than the old Legend Rule.

Using your heightened utterance logic, is a 1st level Mage Armor a different spell from a 2nd level Mage Armor? How about from a Quickened Mage Armor? Also, how does metamagic interact with the spells casting time? And since metamagic doesn't always raise spell levels, can you apply, say, Irresistible Spell, to your Charm Person at level 1?

The "Heightened utterance logic" is based on the clause in the law of sequence which says:

"It's also okay to use a higher-level version of an utterance while a lower-level version is still active, or vice versa, because these constitute different utterances."

This text is not present in the Taboo Magic.

I have added a sentence clarifying what the maximum spell level means.
