    Spoiler: Chapter 129
    Show
It turns out the Azumabitos need at least half a day to perform all the maintenance to prepare a plane for flight when the protagonists have nowhere near that much time with the Yeagerists being able to send in more support. It's also thought that Libero is doomed. Kiyomi suggests escaping the harbor and taking a boat to the Marleyan city of Odiha where the Azumabito's own a hangar to perform maintenance there before the Rumbling reaches it.

While the others try to escape, Reiner and Annie are having some difficulty with the Yeagerists since they're all packing thunder spears. Reiner in particular takes 5 of them to his face to protect Annie who isn't used to them. A Yeagerist train full of reinforcements arrives but it gets derailed by an explosion before it can stop, to everyone's surprise.

Reiner and Annie are being torn apart by the attacks of the Yeagerist thunder spears, losing limbs off their forms and aren't going to make it until Connie and other Squad Levi members along with Pieck return to attack. In desperation, Falco transforms into the Jaw Titan for the first time. Fitting to his name, it's quite bird-like as it's covered with shaggy feathers/fur with talon-like hands with the armored jaw protruding out like a toothy beak in front of his mouth.

Floch escapes the carnage and boosts high into the air aiming one thunder spear at the base of the ship to blow it apart claiming that Eldia will be saved by him. Suddenly he's hit by a point blank explosion as Gabi snipes at his shoulder causing his thunder spear to shoot downwards harmlessly into the water. Floch then falls to his apparent death in the ocean.

As the Yeagerists are finished off, Falco attacks the others in a berserk rage as its only his first time transforming. Pieck blocks him and nearly gets her neck chomped apart. While Falco is distracted Magath climbs onto him and cuts him out. Everyone is brought onto the ship including all of the wounded shifters (Pieck has to leave her seriously wounded Cart Titan form as well). Magath tells them he's staying behind to cover them. As they leave a couple more Yeagerists appear who attack Magath but they get cut down by Shadis, who reveals himself to be the mysterious sabateur who derailed the train. He also correctly identifies that Magath stayed behind because one of the other remaining ships in the port is a speedy Marleyan cruiser which the Yeagerists would be able to catch up to the allies transport ship with and sink them.

The two lock themselves inside the ammunition chamber within the cruiser as more Yeagerists arrive and enter the ship. Magath tells Shadis that he can escape now if he wants, but he states that he was looking for a time to die, and also reveals that he was the figure watching the alliance out of the window as they left the walls, and felt proud of his students. Magath tells him that they would have all failed if it wasn't for him, saying he'd be spoken of as a hero. Shadis says the same back to Magath, who expresses regret for everything he did by ordering children to perform the attack on the walls despite his conscience. Shadis tells him that he's proud of him anyway and thinks that the others would be too. As the Yeagerists pound on the door, they share their names while Magath uses Shadis's rifle to ignite the gunpowder from one of the cannon shots, blowing the entire cruiser apart as the alliance watches in shock.

    Some extra thoughts:

    • The death of Magath is very significant since with him dead it puts a peace ending in much more doubt. Marley was run by the military (and the Tyburs in part) and with the demise of the other leaders at Liberio he was Marley's leader by default. Marley and the rest of the world might have listened to him advocating for peace with the Eldians and Paradis but with his death that option is gone now. There aren't really any other high ranking Marleyans or world leaders who are on their side. I did wonder if we were going for a peaceful ending with him being kept around but the odds are lower now.
    • Some don't think Floch is actually dead since they Never Found The Body and all that and he's really clinging to the plane so he can pop up like Gabi did to kill one of the team, but I don't know.
    • I saw someone note that Floch was trying to be a bit like Erwin even though he just kept failing mostly, having the same arm shot that Erwin lost and used much the same rousing speech to his troops in this chapter.
    • I liked this comment too: https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comme...r_129/ft05wss/ 'Its kinda nice of Magath to tell Shadis he is a hero. At that moment, Shadis probably got what he wanted all along, no longer a bystander but someone who did something heroic.' And it's true. While he had been arrogant initially as leader of the Survey Corps, he felt like a complete failure and no-one special as he had no successes (while Erwin was finding success even as his subordinate) and only got many Scouts killed which is why he stepped down and let Erwin take his place, 'fleeing' to become an instructor, thinking that he was just a mere bystander who was powerless to change anything. Now he may have finally realized that he did make a difference after all.

Also Isayama announced that about 5% of the story is left. If he's being literal that would mean about 6-7 chapters. I wouldn't be surprised if it took around that long to finish the story.

    Spoiler: Chapter 130
    Show
Everyone on the boat is devastated after Magath's death, along with the Warriors despairing that Liberio is done for. Annie stated she's got nothing to fight for anymore, believing her father to be dead, so she's quitting. Hange reminds everyone that Magath sacrificed himself so they could all save as many people as they could and not just Liberio or Marley. Annie again brings up the possibility of killing Eren, seeing that none of them want to do it, then states that she doesn't want to fight anymore, or to prepare to kill anyone there, even Eren too.

A seagull flies over the boat and we finally get shown Eren's thoughts, which take up most of the chapter.

    • We see Yelena telling Eren about Zeke's plan with the spinal fluid with Floch looking on. He tells Floch that he'll go along with the plan but just to trick Zeke and tells him to do the same. He later tells him that the plan is to kill everyone outside the walls, much to Floch's surprise. Seems that Floch really was his confidante after all.

    • He also speaks to Historia and tells her of his genocidal plan, where she yells at him in horror that it's wrong and most people outside the walls are like Eren's mother where to them they're randomly killed out of nowhere. Eren states that that he knows but it's the only way to permanently remove the cycle of revenge born from hate from the world, and tells Historia that he won't let the cycle of parent-eating child continue with her like Paradis wants either, and says he can alter her memories with the Founding Titan power if it'll make it easier. Historia protests but he reminds her that she saved him once while calling herself the worst girl in the world. Historia is shown coming up with the idea to have a child.

    • We also see him speaking to Zeke about Mikasa where Zeke muses that he thinks that Mikasa is compelled to protect Eren not because of any 'ingrained behavior' (he hasn't heard of any such thing with the Ackerman clan via research), but simply because Mikasa likes him that much. As Eren is shown slicing off his leg and putting his left eye out, and states that his friends lives will go on even after he dies and he wants them to live long, happy lives.

After this we're shown the Global Allied Fleet, a massive force of cannon-bearing ships from all over the world, organized to stop the march of the titans. The ships fire on the advancing Wall Titans, but the titans just dive under the water to mostly avoid the shots, coming up under the boats to destroy them. As they stomp towards the mainland, the Marleyan soldiers see the massive form of Eren looming over the Wall Titans.

His lower half is in the form of a gargantuan ribcage where he's walking on his ribs, his upper body is also a skeletal humanoid torso that's hanging down, arms in a 90 degree position with the elbows attached to his lower half's spine by cords. His face looks similar to his Attack Titan form but it's sunken in and he has lips along with muscle over his chin and his thin hair dangles over his head. As the soldiers stare in horror, Eren thinks of them as animals and that he'll destroy every last one of them in this world.

Overall it seems that Eren doesn't have any secret plan to save other people, it's exactly as he said, he really does intend to kill everyone outside of Paradis.

    -

In other thoughts about the chapter, some noted that Eren looks a bit like a marionette with the way he's suspended from his lower body along with his arms being held up by cords, and that he is still actually a slave after all - but to his own ideals. I can see that with him rationalizing to himself in this chapter that he always wanted this along with him flipping out at Hange while in prison demanding to know if there's another way to do things. He also got visibly angry when Armin called him a slave, and Kenny also once said that 'Everyone is a slave to something'.

I think it's possible that Eren might end up realizing that he's a slave to his own thoughts, plan, visions of the future, and desire for freedom.

    Spoiler: Chapter 131
    Show
We're shown the little boy with the hat that Eren met earlier, his name is Ramzi and he's with his brother Halil. Razmi is saving up stolen money so his family can have a better life, but Halil worries that Razmi will get his left hand cut off as punishment for thievery, as we're shown that Razmi has lost his right hand since we last saw him. They're interrupted by people fleeing the matching wall titans. The Rumbling is here.

We see a flashback to Eren thinking how he's going to kill all of the people he sees in the outside world, and briefly wonders what his mother would think. He agrees that the problem would cease if all Eldians die, and that there would be far less deaths if that happened... but he couldn't accept an end like that. He sees Razmi getting beaten up by merchants and knows that he'll kill him someday, but feels that he wants to save him from the beating, but also thinks it to be conceit and that he can hardly stand for justice when he's going to kill everyone. We then see him save Razmi and he thinks how he's like Reiner, a half hearted piece of crap, no... worse than that. He puts his hands on a confused Razmi's shoulders and in tears he repeatedly tells him that he's sorry.

Back in the present, Razmi & Halil and the others are fleeing the titans and that the nearby Marleyans had fled. In the rush, Halil accidentally drops the bag of money. The two brothers run but falling rocks land on them, crushing Razmi's leg and fatally crushing Halil's head. A vision of Ymir Fritz watches on as we then see a wall titan stomp on Razmi, killing him and leaving the two brothers in a bloody smear. The other people try to flee but the titans leave nothing in their wake. This is interlaced with Eren's thoughts, who thinks that the events are to save the island, Eldia, but that it's also because he's also disappointed by the outside world. That it wasn't like the world he saw in Armin's book. He wanted to wipe it all away. We see young Eren inside the paths dimension thinking about freedom and telling Armin they were there at last. We see the real present Armin staring at him.

On the ship, Armin is interrupted from the shared vision by Annie, who offers him a seat next to her. She thanks him for talking to her for years and saying that she was so lonely in the crystal that she looked forward to his and Hitch's talks. She wondered why he'd talk to her when she couldn't talk back and weren't there "more fun and cheerful girls out there". Blushing, he tells her it's because he wanted to see her. Annie blushes and looks sad, saying she didn't get it. She thinks that its because Armin is a good person and that he was willing to not give up on monsters like her and Eren, to avoid conflict. Armin is quiet for a moment. As Annie gets up to leave, he grabs her wrist and tells her to sit. He then tells her that he doesn't like being called a good person, as before. As she sits, he tells her that he's killed a lot of people, children and civilians included, and his allies, and that he's betraying Paradis with his actions. That he's been a monster too for a long time now.

He comments on his promise to Eren to travel to see the world of the unknown, and both Annie and Armin gloomily agree that it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. A seagull lands on the railing and stares at Armin. He states that he still wants to believe that there's a world out there that they don't know about, as we see the real Eren's head inside his titan form, still with a long skeletal neck and his eyes closed with a pensive expression.

    -

So the Rumbling has definitely begun and we're already seeing the mass genocide from it. Innocents like Razmi losing their lives to Eren's plan. It's probably the most depressing chapter in the series so far. We're shown that Eren was distraight what he is doing but still feels bound to do so as he has seen it all happen in his visions of the future. Everyone's a slave to something, and Eren is a slave to his visions... and maybe himself. Is he watching through the birds too, I wonder? He temporarily connected with Armin too.

The Armin/Annie scene was very nice, with the two of them showing some feelings for each other and finding a common understanding between them both as 'monsters' amidst the world falling apart.

    Spoiler: Chapter 132
    Show
The squad arrives at the Hizuru-owned hangar in the south Marleyan city of Odiha. Armin says they should hold onto the explosives that were wrapped around the plane and store it inside the plane instead, in case they need to use them on Eren. Falco wakes up and freaks out at the loss of Liberio (his home and family) and Magath. The Rumbling has trampled nearly all of Marley at this point.

Mikasa speaks with Annie, who says again that she's absolutely done with fighting, and won't be joining them on the plane. She says that as a Marleyan Eldian she's been persecuted by the humanity they're trying to save all their life, and even if the Rumbling stops, there's no-one backing Eldians anymore, no-one to protect them from the world's persecution.

She finds herself staring at Armin in the distance as she states she can't fight anymore and wants to live out the rest of her days in peace. As Mikasa notices she's staring at Armin, Annie suddenly realizes that and blushes, making Mikasa's jaw drop. She starts to ask Annie about it but brushes it off and tells her that it's okay, but Armin is coming with them on the plane to confront Eren. Annie asks Mikasa if she's going to kill Eren, who says no, Eren's just far away from them right now and she's going to bring him back. Annie then enquires about Mikasa's lack of scarf. Mikasa says she has it but she's not wearing it now.

Levi stumbles out into the hallway, able to walk again, and states that Yelena has woken up out of her fever and that they're making her tell them where Eren is. We see a flashback between Yelena, Eren and Floch, where Yelena states part of Zeke's plan, which is to make a small scale rumbling to stomp the allied global fleet. It's exactly what Armin originally guessed Eren was going to do with the power of the rumbling funnily enough. Eren asks if that'll be enough to ensure Paradis's safety. Yelena states that losing all their warships will cause all the major nations to undergo financial collapse which will be more than enough for that. Eren doesn't respond. Yelena then adds that there's a plane research base in the mountains of southern Marley which could be a bit concerning.

Back in the present, Yelena states that it is likely that the base (Fort Salta) is Eren's next target to attack. Pieck notes that it makes sense because planes could be used to attack the Founding Titan. Yelena then asks them all to please admit that Zeke was right in that his euthanasia plan was the only way to stop the crisis and that it's obvious from the state of things right now. Hange solemnly admits that Eren had no solutions, no hope, no future for them, and that she's powerless.

Pieck asks Kiyomi to keep Gabi and Falco with her on the boat because it's safer there. Levi is having difficulty grasping his blade, but says that two fingers will be enough. Annie says her goodbyes to Reiner and Pieck. Reiner apologizes for what he put her though and they hug before he asks her to look after the two kids. Annie and Armin meet each other's gaze sadly before she walks away. As the rest of them chat amongst themselves, a soaking wet figure appears in the port - Floch. He silently raises his pistol and sprays several shots everywhere. Mikasa grabs a grappling hook and shoots him in the throat.

While Floch failed to hit anyone, he did put several bullet holes in the plane's fuel tank. One of the technicians states they can weld the holes shut but it will take an hour. As he reaches for his tools, the whole place starts shaking and they all realize to their horror that the Rumbling is nearby and headed their way. Floch begs them with his dying breaths for them not to go, that the island will be killed and that their devil is their only hope, before passing away. Hange grimly states that he's right but they still can't give up.

We see Gabi & Falco panicking at the sound of the rumbling, but Annie has barred them in their room. Armin says he'll stay behind and slow the wall titans to give them enough time to complete the repairs. Reiner says that Armin is the only chance they have of stopping Eren and that he'll do it. Hange says that they can't risk using up any more titan powers and that she will do it, saying she led them all to that point, kept moving forward while killing her comrades and that she'll take responsibility for that, appointing Armin as the 15th commander of the Survey Corps, saying that no-one else is more suited as him as a Survey Corps Commander needs to have an unyielding desire for understanding.

Hange quips that Levi is Armin's subordinate now as Levi and her mournfully part ways, her stating that it's finally her turn and she wants to look cool. Levi tells her to 'devote her heart', while Hange laughs and says that's the first time she ever heard him say that. As she jets off above the Rumbling, she states that titans really are incredible. Hange takes down a couple of the titans headed towards the hangar, giving just enough time for the plane and the boat to make their escape, slaying a total of 4 wall titans before she burns to death from their steam, with most of the plane bursting into tears as they see her flaming body fall. Levi says goodbye and asks her to keep watching them.

We cut to what appears to be an unharmed Hange lying in a footprint of the titans. Confused, she gets up as Erwin greets her saying she did her duty, along with the rest of the dead scouts including Mike, Moblit, Shadis and Sasha. She's helped to her feet as she asks Erwin if he knew how much trouble she went through because he named her Commander. He states that it must have been a lot and that they're there to listen.

So now the whole party has split up:

    • Annie, Kiyomi, Gabi, Falco, Yelena and the Hizuru technicians stay on the boat to sit things out
    • Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Jean, Connie, Reiner, Pieck and Onyankopon fly off in the plane towards Fort Salta & Eren

Also Salta backwards is Atlas so that's a definite titan themed name there.

    Spoiler: Chapter 133
    Show
On the airplane, Onyankopon informs the alliance that the fuel tank is only half full but he intends to get them to Fort Salta no matter what. As they talk about how to take down Eren, Armin says that the best option is to nuke him with the Colossal Titan but only as a last resort, he'll talk to him first. Levi points out that killing Zeke might end the Rumbling too (since Eren activated it through him) like Hange suggested, however they don't know where Zeke is. Jean and Connie state that they understand what Reiner went through now and that they're the same (having all slaughtered their friends). Reiner says that he heard the same thing from Eren on the night of the raid at Liberio and wonders if Eren wants them to stop him. The group notes that they're still able to transform and use their Titan forms despite Eren having control over them which is strange.

Suddenly the group are all drawn into the Paths Dimension. They all cry out to Eren, including Armin saying the killings can stop and they can have peace, and Connie saying he understands now that Eren was grieving when Sasha died. Appearing in his child form, Eren finally responds and says that he's not going to stop the Rumbling and he's not going to gamble with Paradis's future. That he took away the world's freedom to achieve his own. However he was not going to steal the freedom of the alliance which is why they still have the ability to transform. They're free to try and save the world but he's free to keep moving forward in his plans, and says that if neither side stops they'll inevitably fight. Armin asks why he brought them there and Eren responds that it was to tell them that there's no need to talk and that the only way to stop him is to kill him, and that they are free to do so. The group are brought back to the world and Reiner remarks that he might have been right that Eren wants them to stop him, with the group wondering what they were going to do now that they cannot bargain with him.

We next see the ship with Kiyomi and Annie talking, with the former lamenting her hand in the events. Annie thinks about her father, Eldian and Paradis comrades and last of all, Armin, saying that it's too late to do anything. Falco and Gabi appear with Falco saying he had a dream/memory from Zeke. Gabi asks her about how the Female Titan was able to gain abilities from other titans by eating them and Annie confirms it saying they experimented a lot since the Female Titan didn't have any special abilities. Falco then notes how he became a titan due to consuming Zeke's spinal fluid which caused him to take on some of the Beast Titan's traits and that his memory was one of flying above the clouds and feels that he can do the same, that long ago there must have been a winged Beast Titan, with Gabi saying how his Jaw Titan resembles a bird much unlike Porco's, and that he intends to use this power so they can fly to meet the others.

We then cut to a train approaching Fort Salta and it's revealed that Annie's father Mr Leonhart is still alive and holding the Marleyan train driver hostage, and that their plan is for all the Eldian and Marleyan survivors to use the airships to escape the Rumbling. We also see that Falco's parents, Gabi's parents, Reiner's mother and Pieck's father are also alive and on the train. Suddenly they see most of the airships take off from Fort Salta, and worse, the Rumbling has arrived nearby. They then realize that it's a bombing fleet and that they're planning to attack Eren and the titans from above.

    -

As a side note, there were a few clues towards the Beast Titan being able to achieve a bird form and Falco being given flying abilities from it, some subtle and some more overt:

    • Aside from his name being Falco and his Jaw Titan looking like a bird, when we first see Falco he's looking up at birds in the sky.
    • In the aftermath of Fort Slava at the start of the Marley arc, the head of Marley's military, General Calvi (the guy who looked like Mads Mikkelsen) sarcastically commented on the possibility of a flying titan.
    • Marley's Titan Science research is only a century-or-two old compared to how much longer the Eldian Empire had the power of the Titans, so Marley may not have gotten lucky enough to get any kind of flying titan at all during their reign.
    • The intro of Season 2 of the anime showed many other giant animals besides Zeke as his ape titan. I once thought it might have been part of a general 'Beast' theme showing the Beast Titan overrunning humanity, but it might have been pointing at this in plain sight too.
    • The Uprising arc showed us many serums used by the Royal Family, including a "Strongest Titan" serum which Rod Reiss said would turn Historia into a powerful titan, and which also turned him into a gargantuan abnormal titan which was twice as big as the Colossal Titan after he consumed it. Eren consumed an "Armor Braun" serum which granted him hardening abilities like Annie and Zeke had (did it possibly come from a member of the Braun family in the past?). Along with a "Normal Titan" serum being given to Armin - all thus showing more manipulation and possible powers being taken from one titan shifter and given to another.
    • Zeke being shown with a toy monkey as a child. While it points towards him becoming the Beast Titan as we know at that point, it could also mean he has an affinity for monkeys which influenced his form.
    • Also Zeke's Beast Titan predecessor Tom Xaver said his Titan form wasn't useful in war (part of why he was only a Titan Researcher rather than a Warrior), which is strange given the combat prowess of Zeke's Beast and how he was able to brutally subdue Reiner's Armored Titan before the Battle for Shiganshina, so Xaver may have had a different Beast form.
    • Lastly the clearest indicator by far is the mural shown for the Great Titan War which outright depicts the Beast Titan in the back of the mural as a giant horse rather than an ape, hinting that it can manifest as more than one kind of creature. We know it's not symbolizing the Cart Titan because that one is also shown in the mural as a giant man on all fours carrying boulders on its back, in front of the War Hammer Titan. Perhaps Eren does not believe in Atonement. After all he is not human, he literally has time travel powers (of a sort.)

Perhaps he is asking the nature of humans to suffer and humans ability to rise against the cause of their suffering.

To get truly philosophical, (to an absurd decree) Currently but also in the past with "European" thought. Freedom is good, but also to obey is good. Then what happens in the contradiction where afreedom is good, b obeying is good, c but the "ask" that you are being asked to obey is so large, so big, that is beyond human's ability to meet the obligation of the obeying. Thus with "c" when you choose not to obey (b) for the ask is to much, exercising your freedom (a) , you are then labeled a d demon / devil per "philosophical / religious" scholars.

Per these scholars, this 4 part step of creating demons / devils of the A=>B=>C=>D is how many cultures try to solve the Paradox / Problem of Evil. To try to deal with the tensions of A and B when they come in conflict with C.

Note there are many other ways to play language games and answer this contradiction.

    ----

Perhaps Eren no longer believes in the ability for people to "be in harmony" with one another, after all the language origin of "atonement" is about "coming to harmony with one another" aka you once were in conflict / stryfe and via atonement you now have reached harmony / concordia.

    Yep

    Spoiler: Future Speculation
    Show

I believe Eren thinks he is in a groundhog's day / memory loop due to the time travel capabilities of the Attack Titan and how it can reach back in time via memories.

    1) Thus Eren is going to end the loop via killing all who opposed him.
    2) Yet he wants the freedom of people to stop him, to have the possibility of defeating him and thus eating him.
    3) This in turn will give them the ability to speak to their past attack titan holders. A voice in the head to tell them "no" do not do X, instead do Y.
    4) Yet it is up to the attack titan holders to decide if they want to listen or not.

And thus can the various attack titan holders come up with a solution "via freedom" that they will individually be satisfied with. Can Armin convince Eren to not pursue this path even after Eren has pursued this path and has eaten Eren. Literally 2000 years of history where each individual person has the power of paths up to a max of 13 years and thus we are talking at least 154 attack titan holders, and it can be farm more than 154.

Yadda, yadda, yadda Cronus myth vs Zeus vs Uranus. You know the metaphor of a green lion consuming / eating the sun. This green lion eating the sun is a common alchemical image and is seen in texts such as the Rosarium philosophorum. The symbol is a metaphor for vitriol (the green lion) purifying matter (the sun), leaving behind gold.

    Spoiler: Chapter 134
    Show
Historia is seen giving birth. The farmer appears to be in the background of the room.

All over the world we see different nations and cultures being crushed by the Rumbling, it seems like Eren has spread out all of the titans everywhere. As people flee off a cliff, a mother falls and throws her baby to safety as it is caught and briefly held up before being embraced by another in the face of the oncoming carnage.

At Fort Salta it's discovered that -all- the airships have left to bomb the titans so there's no way for the Marleyan and Eldian survivors to escape. The lead Marleyan officer at the fort gives a speech admitting the failures of Marley and how they used hatred, saying they left all their problems on the 'island of devils', and that 'the devil was born to return the hate they gave it', as we're shown Eren looming over, and that he swears not to make the same mistakes if humanity still exists tomorrow.

Karina thinks back to Reiner as a baby and falls to her knees in tears saying she just used Reiner and never did anything for him as a mother. Mr Leonhart sadly says it's the same with him.

The Marleyan officer says he hopes to end the era of hate and start an era of peace as he orders the bombing. Eren starts to move as they start dropping the bombs, and somehow spawns the Beast Titan out of one of his spines, which throws repeated showers of rocks towards the airships bringing them all down.

As the survivors wait for the end, Mr Leonhart and Karina say that at least Reiner and Annie will be safe on Paradis Island. Suddenly a girl spots something on the horizon - it's the plane.

Onyankopon yells that the plane engine is nearly dead and he's going to try and crash land the plane but that the alliance needs to jump out above Eren. Suddenly they narrowly miss a shower of rocks courtesy of the Beast Titan, to Levi's rage. Armin tells everyone that their target is the Beast Titan. They all jump out of the plane as Armin yells Eren's name. As they dodge more rocks, Reiner transforms into the Armored Titan, landing directly on the Beast Titan tackling it down onto Eren's spine. Pieck also transforms into the Cart Titan while holding the belt of explosives.

The Marleyan soldiers watch in shock seeing the two titan shifters as well as the ODM gear realizing that it is Paradis forces coming to stop the Rumbling. Karina is surprised to see her son. Armin says he'll ask Eren one last time "What part of you is free" after they rip him out. The final battle has begun.

    -

On a side note, it's not yet known if the Beast Titan we see is Zeke. Some theorize that Eren is using the Warhammer Titan's power to create a Beast puppet with the real Zeke being elsewhere on/within Eren.

Read this a few days ago, it is a better recent chapter, but the show is not fun once the mystery box aspect was gone.

    Spoiler: Chapter 135
    Show
We first see a flashback to Ymir letting the pigs out of the pen. It seems she was the one who let them out after all and not just a scapegoat. But we don't know why. We then see her looking on as the Beast Titan turns into a pile of bones, confirming that the real Zeke is elsewhere. Armin prepares to blow himself up by transforming into the Colossal Titan as he tells the others to get clear, but suddenly a giant mouth appears behindh im and he finds himself bound and swallowed up by a titan's long tongue which pushes itself into his mouth, preventing his transformation. Suddenly a mass of titans start spawning from Eren's spine.

The Eldian survivors find Onyankopon in the wreckage of the plane, unconscious but still breathing. The lead Marleyan officer orders his troops to fire with the three cannons they have left as that's all they can do, and to be brave like the warriors of Paradis who are giving their lives to fight Eren there.

Reiner gets swarmed by titans which the others blow apart with thunder spears. Pieck realizes that all of the spawned titans are all replicas of the past Nine Titan Shifters, seeing ones like a rocky Armored Titan and a crocodile-like Jaw or Beast Titan, saying that Eren can probably spawn them indefinitely. She launches herself through the titan horde and wraps the explosives around Eren's neck, getting out of her Cart Titan and prepares to sacrifice herself by detonating the explosives to kill Eren. However the Cart Titan is suddenly impaled with a trident by Miss Tybur's Warhammer Titan, as the detonator tumbles out of Pieck's reach.

Reiner is then attacked by Porco's Jaw Titan followed by Marcel's Jaw Titan appearing as everyone tries to flee. We then cut to Armin who realizes that it's Ymir rather than Eren spawning the titan replicas, and that Ymir must also wish for humanity's annihilation as she is not opposing Eren in any way. He despairs that Ymir is invincible, and sees a vision of Bertolt, eyes closed with a tear running down his cheek. Suddenly to everyone's horror Bertolt's Colossal Titan manifests overhead, snatching up Reiner's titan. Reiner ejects himself as the Colossal replica bites his titan's head off before throwing the body down, sending everyone flying.

The alliance is now hanging from the underside of Eren's spines with Connie unconscious, as the titan replicas continue to attack with Mikasa fending them off. Reiner is dangling by Jean's hand and tells Jean to let him go because he can shift into the Armored Titan. Jean refuses and says that he'll end up trampled if he does that, and that while they don't have a chance of winning anymore they'll fight to the bitter end. Connie nearly gets eaten as he awakes, but gets narrowly saved by Levi. As more titans spawn in around them, Mikasa starts to make a last stand and give a speech about her strength, but suddenly gets interrupted by a mysterious voice saying she's acting a little crazy, as a winged titan appears behind them catching them all.

It's Falco's Jaw Titan, this time with a full fledged set of wings, looking even more birdlike than before. Annie is revealed to be the mysterious voice, riding on top alongside Gabi, saying she's glad that she came.

Current status of the alliance: No new deaths this chapter.
-Mikasa, Reiner, Jean, Connie and Levi are on Falco's flying Jaw Titan, along with Annie and Gabi.
-Armin has been captured and bound inside the mouth of a long-tongued titan.
-Pieck's status is unknown but she was last seen stuck on her impaled Cart Titan with the detonator to the explosives out of reach.

Some also noted that Annie doesn't seem to have her bladed ring (unless it's an art error or minor detail left out) - that perhaps Armin has it and he'll be able to use it to transform in his bound state.

It's not known if Eren is really in charge or Ymir. Or if they're working together. Or if Eren is focusing on leading the Rumbling while Ymir is protecting him.

Also the final season of the anime has just started airing as well. Supposedly it's only going to be about 16 episodes so I'm guessing that we're going to have another split cour or a movie to finish off the show since 16 eps won't be enough to cover everything.

As far as the animated Shingeki No Kyojin goes, it could go for a Gecko Ending. Though that's unlikely.

    Perhaps one hour long episodes?

    Spoiler: Chapter 136
    Show
Annie explains that the Azumabito ship sunk as it was unable to withstand Falco's transformation, however Kiyomi, Yelena and the technicians escaped on lifeboats. Reiner asks Falco if he remembers the promise he made to him and Falco does - to save Gabi from the dark future they faced. Annie starts to ask how Armin is before pausing and how Pieck is, though Mikasa tells her Armin has been captured and taken to Eren's tailbone anyway and asks for her help in getting him back, to which Annie agrees and says that she'll get Armin back.

Reiner mentions that Pieck is near Eren's skull and the explosives are wrapped around his nape, only they couldn't hit the trigger. Levi states that they'll split into 2 groups to achieve both goals - one will rescue Armin and the other will go for Eren's nape, bluntly stating to Mikasa that they can't be concerned about Eren any longer, while he, Connie and Jean sadly talk about the hopelessness of the situation. Jean finally bluntly says they need to kill Eren.

As Mikasa is completely lost at the thought of killing Eren, Annie grabs her and brings her back to reality, telling her to just focus on saving Armin and not to think about anything else (in order to help her deal with losing Eren). Gabi talks about when she blew Eren's head off with a rifle and that a 'shining centipede' jumped out of Eren's spine and connected to his head, musing that it might be the source of the titans power, and that they might see it again if they decapitate him.

Back in Fort Slava, the Marleyan soldiers see the Jaw Titan flying back towards the Rumbling, before the Eldian refugees appear behind them, led by Mr Leonhart. The two sides point guns towards each other as Mr Leonhart tries to convince both sides to back down and says they need their wounded to be treated. However the Marleyans are untrusting and the Eldians are resentful at being sent to the front lines in the past. The Marleyan commander appears (his name is revealed as Secretary Muller) with his gun held up. We hear some gunshots as the scene cuts back to the titans.

As the alliance closes in, a hoard of Warhammer replicas fires a shower of arrows, but Falco manages to speed up and evade them all. Reiner and Jean leap off above Eren's shoulders, Reiner transforming into the Armored Titan to distract all the Warhammer replicas while Jean runs towards the explosives. As the Ms Tybur replica looks towards Jean, Pieck leaps out of her ruined Cart Titan body and retransforms to destroy it. As the two get swarmed and as her titan gets destroyed, Pieck ejects and transforms again and again, stating that she's not only just good for odd jobs and that she can fight - with the Cart's enormous endurance (she's been in her titans for months at a time after all) she can transform hundreds of times and keep going as long as she isn't taken out herself. Unfortunately even with Pieck and Reiner providing distractions, Jean is still having trouble getting to the explosives with the constantly spawning titan replicas.

Meanwhile as the others try to work out which titan captured Armin, Connie spots one titan is the only one running away towards Eren's tailbone. Annie or Mikasa recognizes it as having the head of an Okapi (a mini giraffe-relative with a lengthy tongue, which explains Armin's capture). She, Mikasa and Connie jump off with Annie transforming into the Female Titan, declaring that they're going to get Armin back.

Gabi states she can take out titans with her rifle but Levi tells her not to bother, as he looks over for Zeke. He thinks about his damaged leg and then back to Erwin and how he's unable to fulfil his final order and maybe his and Erwin's time was already over, and if the other scouts sacrificed themselves to trample on others hearts and lives, but then thinks that the world without titans they dreamed of was an innocent and idealized one, otherwise it wouldn't have been worth their deaths. Levi thinks that he doesn't regret not picking Erwin, and he entrusts the future to Armin, the kid who had the same look in his eyes as him.

Back at the tailbone, as they fight the titans off Annie spots the Okapi titan preparing to circle around and run back up Eren's spine towards the head. Mikasa uses her grappling hook to grab onto Annie's hand while Annie then launches her towards the Okapi. Unfortunately more titans spawn to get in the way while her blades break on an Armored replica which Annie leaps in and kills to save her. The Okapi is then spotted running towards Bertolt's replica.

Armin is then seen above his unconscious body screaming at it to move because everyone else in the alliance is going to die, and how he's useless and he's always hated himself and how he hasn't been able to fulfil all the responsibilities and expectations he was given. It's hopeless though as his body doesn't respond. As he collapses he notices that the ground has sand on it and that he's not dead and he's in the Paths and thinks there might be something he can do here. As he turns and looks behind him to his surprise he spots a tired-looking Zeke sitting on the ground molding something out of sand. As the two greet each other Zeke states "so Ymir ate you too".

Also it has now been officially confirmed that the manga is going to end in April, so there's only 3 chapters left to go:

Kodansha USA just announced on their Twitter feed that the final chapter will be published on April 9th in the May issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine.

Back to Armin in the Titan Realm. He manages to talk to Zeke and in doing so "wake up" all the former titans. They return to the real world and starting fighting. The rumbling is stopped and Armin nukes the whole place. There is a lot of layers going on in here. Eren doesn't seem to be "awake" and the worm thing seems to the one who is running things to a large extent.

    Spoiler: Chapter 137
    Show
As he builds a sandcastle, Zeke talks about the origin of life in primordial times and we're shown the spinal worm (the real life name of this creature is Hallucigenia btw) and about how life sought numbers, to spread, abundance - and so that the purpose of life is to multiply. Life never stops frantically trying to multiply, and death is counter to that, and so creatures fear death. That this fear caused Ymir Fritz to create an undying body and to escape to a world free of death (the Paths). Zeke also says he pondered on why she kept obeying King Fritz's family and believes it was because she still felt attached to the world she left behind. That Eren understood that and he didn't, which is why Ymir went with Eren. Armin wishes to escape from the paths, but Zeke doesn't see the point in saving life since it's just about pointlessly multiplying, and that perhaps death brings relief from that manipulative cycle.

Armin looks down and sees a leaf in the sand and talks about how as a child, he, Eren and Mikasa raced to a tree on a hill. The breeze was nice and warm, running felt good, and leaves were fluttering everywhere. At that point he thought maybe he was born so that the three of them could race there, and that he felt the same when he read books at home on a rainy day, when he fed nuts to a wild squirrel and visited a market with his friends. That such trivial moments might actually be precious. Armin holds the leaf up and says even if it's got nothing to do with multiplying, it's still something previous. To Zeke's eyes, he sees the leaf as a baseball. He thinks back to his happy memory of playing catch with Tom Xaver, throwing and catching the baseball, and though it didn't mean anything, he would have rather kept on playing it. As he does so, he and Armin are suddenly approached by friendly past shifters walking up to them that they knew - Xaver, Grisha, Kruger, Ymir(Scout), Porco, Marcel and Bertolt.

Back in the real world, Pieck's hand is bitten off and she is saved by Jean. She's unable to transform until she grows her hand back. As they rush back towards Reiner they see him lying on the ground surrounded by Warhammer replicas, impaled by numerous weapons, with one Warhammer preparing to decapitate him with a scythe. Elsewhere, Annie is tackled by another replica and surrounded by more closing in with her titan's arm being torn off. Suddenly to everyone's surprise, Bertolt's Colossal replica lashes out and sends all the other replicas flying. Back at the front, Jean, Pieck and Reiner are saved by Porco, Marcel and Ymir's Jaw replicas, killing the other replicas around them. Mikasa takes the opportunity given by Bertolt to attack the Okapi titan which leaps away. Suddenly it gets shot in the head by Gabi in the middle of its jump causing to it to tumble, letting Mikasa slice its mouth open and freeing Armin. It then impales him through the leg with its tongue, so he turns around and fires a thunderspear into its mouth to kill it.

As Armin is dragged down by the dead Okapi, Connie cuts through its tongue to free him and calls out to Annie to catch Armin which she does. More replicas close in but they're taken out by Kruger and Grisha's Attack replicas, along with Xaver's ram-headed Beast replica (which we've seen for the first time), followed up by Bertolt's replica again clearing more hostile replicas out. Everyone is surprised at the help. Suddenly Zeke partially emerges from one of Eren's spines and calls out to Levi, waving him over, saying that Levi wanted to meet him though he couldn't say the same.

Armin tells the others that the help is thanks to Zeke and he was able to wake up their dead friends. We see back inside paths as Armin & Zeke communicate with them as Ymir Fritz watches on, and how all Eldians are connected to each other by the path because she wants to be connected... because she wants something from them. Zeke tells Xaver that he thinks his euthanasia plan wasn't wrong but he wouldn't mind being reborn if he got to play catch with him again, and also says he thanks his father Grisha for bringing him into the world.

Armin tells Bertolt that he took his life, power and memories, everything, and that's how he knows they can't stay there. Armin & Zeke ask the dead shifters to lend them their strength. Back to the present, Zeke sees the sky and comments on what a beautiful day it is and if only he'd realized that earlier, but that after all the killing that he'd done, maybe it was asking for too much. Zeke is then decapitated by Levi, ending his life. Levi has an unhappy expression on his face. The wall titans suddenly all stop moving and the Rumbling comes to a halt (just as Hange had theorized).

Back at the front, the other hostile replicas are still active. Pieck has recovered and re-transformed to help Reiner, Porco, Marcel and Ymir cover Jean's rush back to the explosives on Eren's neck. He reaches the detonator and in an echo of long ago he calls Eren a stupid little suicidal blockhead before he detonates the explosives and blows off the head of Eren's titan. As the head falls, the Hallucigenia bursts out of the titan's neck again, appearing absolutely gigantic this time and tries to reach Eren's head. Reiner tackles it and slams it into the ground below to stop it.

Connie calls out to Jean and Pieck as it's revealed that he, Levi, Annie and Mikasa have gotten back on Falco and that Armin's about to blow Eren's body of bones apart. Jean is concerned about Reiner, but Pieck says that the Armored Titan should be able to withstand the explosion... and that Reiner's prepared for the consequences anyway and that he can't let the opportunity go to waste. We still see Reiner wrestling with the Hallucigenia with Eren's head lying in the background as Jean & Pieck make their escape with the others. We next see the friendly Jaw Titans at the front looking on as Bertolt holds up Kruger, Grisha and Xaver who is in turn holding up Armin. Armin thanks them all and says without their strength they wouldn't have been able to stop the Rumbling. He then says goodbye to Eren as he transforms into the Colossal Titan, consuming Eren's spinal body in a massive explosion, with Mikasa in tears as she watches on with the others.

    Spoiler: Chapter 138
    Show
The issue opens up with a scene of the crowd on the cliff staring at the motionless wall titans. Falco lands where the Eldians are in Fort Salta, overseeing the bones blown apart. Mikasa gets a headache and thinks back to Eren telling her he hated her because she was an Ackerman slave to him. Gabi, Pieck and Falco are reunited with their families. Annie talks with Reiner's mother who tells her that her father is there too. As Annie runs off everyone looks down to Colossal Armin and Armored Reiner. Reiner is lying on the ground while the Hallucigenia has been hurled away from him by the blast towards the base of the fort, still alive. As Armin looks on, suddenly a large explosion occurs behind him.

Everyone looks back to see Eren's titan form rise again - his giant titan head has managed to regenerate a Colossal Titan body for itself. The group worries about the Hallucigenia coming into contact with Eren again and wonder how to kill it since it managed to survive Armin's Colossal explosion. As the Alliance prepares to leave again to finish Eren, the Hallucigenia suddenly starts spouting out clouds of vapor. We then cut to the scene where Mr Leonhart is helped to his feet by Secretary Muller, and it's revealed Muller had fired his rounds into the air to make the fighting cease. As they make peace, Annie appears, her and her father seeing each other for the first time in years. However the Hallucigenia vapors rise up and smother the fort. Connie realizes to his horror that it doesn't smell like a dead titan and it's probably titanizing vapors like what was used on his home village of Ragako.

Levi orders Mikasa and Pieck to get on Falco and leave the others behind because only Ackermans and shifters are immune to the vapors. Jean, Connie and Gabi stare sadly, and resign themselves to their end as Connie remarks to Jean that he was the one who inspired their group to join the Surver Corps. Just as Annie and her father are about to make contact, all the fort Eldians spontaneously transform into titans. Onyankopon calls out to Annie in shock as she and Muller witness her titanized father. Fortunately the titans all ignore the Marleyans/etc and start jumping off the fort... because they're rushing to protect the Hallucigenia.

Reiner gets to his feet and comments about the creature summoning its troops as the Hallucigenia and the titan horde rush towards him, stating that there's no way they're getting past and wrestling with it once more as it slams into him. Armin ruefully states that Eren really loves hell and he's going to stick it out with him to the very end, as the two Colossal Titans clash. Reiner recognizes Jean, Connie, Gabi and his mom amongst the titan horde as Cart Titan Pieck and Female Titan Annie attack the Hallucigenia with him, while Falco flies up towards the Colossals carrying Mikasa and Levi.

Mikasa has another headache and starts having a vision of a happier life with Eren, sitting on a bench. He asks her why she's crying and says that the two of them abandoned everything and left the world behind, saying that Marley will invade Paradis soon, saying he couldn't ruin Historia's life with her family devouring each other, nor genocide humanity outside the walls, and he should just live the four years of life he has left with Mikasa like she suggested once. She says she's sorry and he asks her to make one more promise, to throw out her scarf once he's dead, that she has a long life ahead of her and to forget about him and be free, as titan marks appear on his face and a bird soars overhead.

Back in reality, Eren's titan smashes Armin in the face getting the upper hand in the fight, while Reiner, Pieck and Annie are getting torn into by the titan horde. Mikasa ties the scarf around her neck and thinks that she's sorry but she can't forget him, and realizes that Eren is inside his titan's mouth, stating to Armin and Levi that "she'll do it". The two Ackermans leap while Armin grabs Eren's titan holding it still (getting smashed in the face again) while Levi fires a thunderspear at its mouth blowing its top teeth apart.

Mikasa lands inside the titan's mouth and see's Eren's head inside, still attached to a bony spine as we saw in an earlier chapter. She rushes with her blade in hand and swings it as Eren looks at her, peaceful and emotionless. We go back to her vision with Eren slumped forward on the bench as she says "see you later, Eren", picking up his head in her hands. Back in reality we see her kissing his decapitated head on the lips, both their eyes shut, with Ymir Fritz watching on in the background with a happy smile.

Last chapter is out, and it ended about how I thought it would when:

that giant worm thing shot out of decapitated super huge Eren's titan. All the Titans turned into normal humans. It turns out Ymir could have done that at any time, but was stockholmed into loving King Fritz. I forgot to check if all the unleashed Wall Titans became humans or just died.

I feel no catharsis. No interest in the future of the world of AoT. The series isn't bad, but it's like having a nice meal and then given sand for dessert.

My feelings are summed up nicely by a Sage Hyden / Just Write video that has unfortunately been taken down by the Anime company who makes Attack on Titan even though it was up for a few weeks.

It was about the tension of show v. tell.

Me as a writer and narrator is saying X, and that X is moral and correct.
Me as an artist and plotter is saying Y and that Y is moral and correct.

They were in tension and the end result was not cathartic. Hell I will go further and argue the product is problematic to the extreme, that the author may not have the intent to make a problematic work, but you lose control of intent when your work is in the space beyond your control and people can have opinions different from another person. Your art is an echo and response to previous pieces of culture that already occurred, and in turn other pieces of art that have not happened yet.

That previous sentence is confusing so let me use a metaphor and historical example to illustrate it. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and the 2nd Austin Powers movie, The Spy Who Shagged Me both came out in 1999. These movies came out less than a month apart and Austin Powers came out after Star Wars. In Star Wars TPM we learned force powers come from midichlorians in the blood, and in Austin Powers 2 we learn Austin’s super powers come from something in his blood called Mojo. This was serendipity, this was was Jung called Synchronicity, two unrelated events yet the mind sees them as connected and it makes them connected even if there was no intent. Thus arguing it was not the artists intent to say X when you are showing Y means the artist is oblivious of the multiple ways his art can unfold.

The next part is my opinion, but it is a firmly held opinion. If you are an artist creating a story that blames all the evil in the world, where a group of people broke the axis mundi, the world pole that organizes the world, and then do a critique of this. Well that is not enough to be subtle, nor is it enough to say my intent is not to spread hate. You as the artist need to be clearer than crystal, to understand people will not get subtext or text and sometimes they stink at meaning. If you can not do that, make a story that a 10 year old can understand, then pick a different subject matter to tell your action story about. Do not birth evil and monsters into the world as an artist!

[ Same thing applies to other genres such as horror, do not make the world worse even by accident. And even if 99% of people get your message, 1% of people who are hateful are enough to spoil your story ]

    —————

Good Riddance, this could have been a fun story but I lost all fun with it more than halfway through it.

The ending got a few new pages as well to tweak it. The author said he wasn't quite happy with how it originally turned out, it makes me wonder if the anime ending will get more tweaks as well. We'll have to see.

Apparently there was a guidebook interview with Isayama last month that I hadn't noticed:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/ShingekiNoK...w_with_hajime/

The new information being (quoting the post directly):

    Spoiler: Guidebook spoilers
    Show

    • Armin's 'controversial line' was changed
    • AU School Castes confirmed Canon by Isayama
    • Panel where Eren dies, appears in Tokyo, gets runover by a bus and then reincarnated into a Final Fantasy quest
    • Guidebook reveals Eren let himself get killed
    • Some Panels are Redrawn
    • Isayama wanted to kill Levi, but his editors convinced him not to do it because it made no sense and had no impact
    • Isayama was concerned that certains things in the earlier chapters made it apparent that there was a time loop going on, with the plot of Ymir he made it clear some things cannot be changed. He adds that some drawings do seem to imply that a time loop is going on, but the final answer lies on the reader, it's up to them to decide if there is a time loop or not. He neither confirmed it or denied it.
    • AOT sekakei story: She explains first what this is. It's a type of story in which the fate of the world depends on the choices of the hero and heroine. The world crisis is directly linked to the heroes. The hero is forced to choose between the world or his love. Isayama did have this in mind when creating SNK, as Eren and Mikasa's story, but he wanted to include Armin too, so it got quite troublesome, things got too complicated for Isayama at the end of the story.

Unconfirmed Additional Context from Guidebook (speculated translations)

    • Guidebook confirms Mikasa loves Eren, it's not the Ackerman bond. No Jeankasa mention or reference
    • New ending confirmed the manga ends with the giant tree. Its all the same as the leaks. After the tree comes the school castes
    • Guidebook confirms Aruani even more
    • Guidebook confirms Farmer is the father of Historias baby
    • No explanation at all about Mikasa's family
    • Drafts had Levi confirming the titans did not exist anymore. It got erased in the published version
    • Drafts show that Armins words to the Marleyan soldiers had more effect, they started to drop their weapons. Got erased. Armin totally shat upon.
    • Drafts confirm Historia's baby is a girl.
    • Most of the Mikasa section of the guidebook is about how much she loves Eren and wants to be with him always.
    • Guidebooks states Historia saved Eren because she remembered Ymir, not because she had feelings for him
    • Louise did NOT die.
    • He never intended to show anyone married or happy because that's not SNK

Also I realised I never gave my thoughts on the ending:
    Spoiler: Ending thoughts
    Show
I liked a lot of the ending but the landing was somewhat bumpy, mainly the part where Eren was way too easily 'forgiven' and mourned for what he did and Ymir being in love with King Fritz. The link between Eren, the Hallucigenia and Ymir wasn't all that clear either.

Re the added content: I liked the Ymir part where it showed her regret over not letting the king die, and it gave some closure to her that was missing initially. I didn't like the post-ending that much though, I preferred the "uncertain yet hopeful future" theme they had going initially. At least it appears they got many decades of peace within the protagonists lifetime since we see that things only fall apart after Mikasa passes away as an elderly lady.
