    Default A Light in the Black (Serenity RPG) - OOC

    1. We're all here to have fun. I will treat each of you with respect and I hope you do the same for one another.

    2. In Character Actions equal In Character Consequences. If you decide to charge into a fire fight, there's a high probability you will get killed. As the GM, I will try my best to balance realism with fairness.

    3. The Rule of Three is in effect. As a general rule, you should wait for three (3) other people to pose after you (including the GM) before posing again. There may be some story situations which necessitate an immediate reaction, but those should be pretty evident. If I need an immediate reaction/pose out of someone, I'll let them know.

    4. If you want to have side scenes with other characters when you feel it is appropriate to progress your characters, please feel free to start another thread and PM the link.

    5. Most of you have already picked a color for your speech. I highly encourage the use of bolding and color for speech to draw it out. If you ever want to use a throw-away NPC, leave the text black and bold it.

    6. Try to keep internal thoughts at a minimum. If you want to add an internal thought here or there, that's ok - just make sure to italicize it and call it out (e.g. "Blah blah blah", he thought to himself.)

    7. I'm not a master of the Serenity RPG nor do I consider myself a perfect GM. I'm human and thus prone to mistakes. If something isn't right, let me know. If you can cite a book and page number, all the better. I'll correct any technical mistakes immediately. If you disagree with a judgment call, feel free to explain why. However, as GM, my decision is final and we should move on for the sake of the game. We may disagree, but I value your opinions as players.

    8. Feel free to PM me feedback as we go along. I'd love to hear your thoughts on directions we could take the story or ways we can improve play.

    9. If you need to be absent for more than two days straight or if your activity may become sparse, please let us know so we can plan around you.

    10. If you're going to make an overt action (e.g. jumping between two buildings), it should be pretty easy to pick up on the action. However, if you're going to take any subtle action (e.g. scanning for threats), feel free to drop it into a spoiler at the end of your pose so I make sure to note your action.

    BoomstickTM Auto-Shotgun (x2; 170 C)
    Description: Originally designed as an anti-Reaver weapon, this auto-shotty is extremely solid in its design, in order to prevent jamming, to stifle excess noise from the firing mechanism, and to allow it to be used as a handy club in case some huen dahn decides to invade your personal space. Due to the thinner firing chamber and barrel, it don't take normal shotgun rounds, instead requiring some rather special, smaller ammo; the bullet size combined with the altered chamber results in you getting more shots off before you gotta reload than normal. These special bullets are jam-packed with powerful explosive agents, making for a more powerful shrapnel spray. Due to the Reavers having apparently "borrowed" the weapon en masse from whoever they come across, this rather potent firearm has a bit of a bad reputation that most folks would rather avoid. Still, it was popular in its time, so most gun stores 'round the Rim probably still got a few boxes of ammo in the back somewhere. Might be best to stockpile it, though.

    Upgrades: +1 damage step, +50% magazine size, durability doubled, fancy ammo

    VendettaTM Heavy Pistol (x2; 36 C)
    Description: This over-sized pistol is constructed out of a lightweight metal alloy that makes it a favored weapon for gunslinger duels (at least among Core-rats with delusions of sophistication). Regardless, you can't deny that it's an effective firearm, and it's a mite easier to get away with carrying one than, say, a shotgun, or a scoped rifle, 'specially in polite company.
    Base Item: Pistol (from the Core rulebook)
    Upgrades: +1 damage step, +50% magazine size, lightweight design (1/2 weight)

    Ballistic Duster (x2; 148 C)
    Description: This snazzy-looking longcoat was a favorite of the Independent commanders during the war, although it's seen plenty of use both before the war and since. This rather expensive coat has a couple very useful hidden features: while the outermost layer is some fine-looking leather, the inside layers are mostly just layers of ballistic mesh, woven together to make it effective protection from non-bullet weapons, all without weighing you down too much; potentially even more useful, the innermost layer is a HeartLine Health Suit, which'll let a doc monitor your vitals if the coat doesn't fully protect you from something. Best of all, the Health Suit has been modified to have a bunch of backup vital readers, so even if you're shot to hell and back, as long as the coat is still vaguely intact, it should still be getting a good reading. While most of the coats in circulation come in brown (can't imagine why), a few other rustic-ish colors are available, usually rusty red, tan, light gray, and black.

    Strong, fast, tough, and stubborn...but not much for book-learning. Good with all kinds of weapons, whether guns, grenades, or dicing it up in melee, and has a good feel for who he can trust. Whether the crew can trust Sam, though...

    Those who know him know that, while he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, Sam is not without a certain degree of cunning intellect. Put a bit more simply, Sam's good at one thing: hurting people. Whether it's with his fists or his guns, Sam is practically a force of nature when it comes to close-range combat.

    Sam is a very wiry young man whose almost one solid muscle: while he's not the strongest, few people have his reactions, and you've yet to meet anybody who can take more of a beating. Unfortunately for Sam, the only thing he's got besides muscle is scars: virtually his entire body is covered in the things. From deep cuts that never fully healed, to large permanent bruises, to entire swathes of skin that seem to have been burned off long ago, Sam's skin is living testament to violence, but he doesn't seem to mind when people stare. It's when weapons start getting pulled that he reacts...which unfortunately leads to one of Sam's biggest problems: he doesn't have a really good idea of how much violence is enough, and tends to overdo it usually.

    Despite his relative inexperience (in comparison the the surplus of war veterans scattered 'round the Rim), Sam has already made a decent name for himself as a mercenary who's loyal to his employers. One of his better qualities is that he's not particularly greedy: as long as he continues eating, he's loyal to employers that deserve loyalty. For whatever reason, Sam's convinced that this lot is worth hanging with, so he's on retainer as a sort of quartermaster and security guard for the crew and their ship. Sam's a very distant, cold person most of the time, and keeps his emotions and his past to himself for the most part. One of the few exceptions is his obvious respect for the ship doctor, although whether that respect on its own extends to a more personal loyalty than that which he has to his employer is anybody's guess.
    Spoiler: The Dark Secret
    Show
    This is the story of Sam Mordred.

    Throughout his childhood, Sam's family was constantly on the move: his father Aesther had been a brilliant biochemist operating out on the Rim, working on terraforming technology way back in the day. The Alliance officers in charge of the various planets were keen on having him work on thing, so every time they'd just settled down for a few weeks, they'd need to move again. Eventually, once most planets were finally starting to settle down enough to get populated, the Alliance granted Sam's father with a nice home and lab set-up on a newly terraformed planet to perform research dictated to him by the Alliance.

    When they'd finally settled down in their new home, Sam proved to be rather antsy when sticking in one place, and ended up getting in lots of fights during his early teen years; even at that early age, Sam was a monster in combat, at least for his pre-teen peers. Unfortunately, this was a skill to be punished rather than rewarded, and Sam spent a good bit of time in detention, or suspended, leading to a sharp decline in his academic performance. Sam, for his part, just thought that everybody was too false and untrustworthy, especially compared to his sister, and his friends back on Shadow.

    Things continued rather uneventfully for a few years afterward, until Sam's parents went off-planet on a pre-scheduled vacation: the months that followed saw their new home planet descend into pure anarchy: most of the planets population seemed to suffering from increased feeling. Any happiness was ecstasy, any pain was torture, any disagreement a dire insult. As a result, they withdrew from society slowly but surely, even as the intensity of what they felt increased by the day. They couldn't really disagree anymore, so everybody just did what they were told...until the stress of their job was too much to bear, so they quit. They stopped arguing, they stopped disobeying, they stopped working...and then, when the sensation of chewing was too overpowering, they even stopped eating.

    A very tiny portion of the populace had an opposite reaction: not only were the effects of outside stimuli on their emotions and tactile senses lessened, their adrenal gland was given a boost and went into overdrive, pumping them full of extra-strength adrenaline almost constantly, allowing them a level of physical capabilities that had been beyond them before now. Over time, they would develop a semi-immunity to that level of adrenaline, and their gland would respond by increasing their dosage; several cycles later, there was almost as much adrenaline pumping through their veins as there was blood. For a while, this portion of the population was tasked with taking care of the rest, but the burden of this task combined with their increasingly erratic behavior proved a terrible combination.

    At first, you see, this adrenal boost had been seen as a gift: their pain tolerance was boosted dramatically, as was the rest of their physical capabilities. Over time, though, it came to be viewed as a curse: without feeling, life had no risk or reward. Now, the only goal in any adrenaline-fueled mind was feeling some kind of sensation, any kind of sensation. Some would cut themselves open; some would hold their arm in a fire until they could see the bone blackening; some put out their eyes, or cut off their limbs, or cut out their tongues. When physical injury couldn't elicit any kind of reaction, they turned to drastic measures, in a misguided attempt to use emotionally and morally shocking acts to shock their systems back into order. Eventually, the whole lot of them got fixated on one final idea: that, in the moment before death, you could feel the smallest sliver of something. In seeking out this idea, this portion of the populace descended to an animalistic state, with only the social pressures of pack mentality holding them back from slaughtering each other.

    Throughout all this, Sam's ability to feel the people around him came into its own, letting him feel by leeching off the feelings of those that were overstimulated, letting their excess sustain him. For a while, he and his sister attended to the practically catatonic masses, until one day she couldn't hold it in any longer and attacked him. He fought back, and he won, but the psychological scars he carries from that fight are greater than any scar marking his body. That was the last time Sam felt even a sliver of emotion on his own.

    From there, he regressed like many of the others did, although he still had a measure of personal drive: he held onto the hope that, if he made his way off this planet back to civilization, he would be able to feel again by feeling through others. His time among his fellow survivors was far too terrible to speak of, but after a few years, he managed to split away from the group he'd flown the stars with, and made his way back to his old home on Shadow. Finding that he, along with everyone else on the planet, had been declared dead from a terraforming accident, Sam didn't know well enough to suspect anything, and simply continued on with his new life as an adult. Without any real identity (since he was legally dead) and without any real education outside of his combat experience, he began making a name for himself as a mercenary.

    I also suggest the Arc Light for the ship's name, based solely on nostalgia for a previous Firely game I played (an omen of good fortune, I suppose, as it ran for years and several campaigns)?

    Claiming brick red for Sami's speech. Though I do find it interesting that an ex-Browncoat prejudiced against the Alliance ended up on a ship with at least three ex-Alliance.

    As for ship names, I'm a fan of Shenjian. Or Q's suggestion. I also like Q's suggestion.

    Adrian seems like a good choice for ship owner/captain, Orson could be between ships and help him get it space worthy, or a recent hire if that fits better

    Okay - got three of the sheets up. Will try to get the other three up by tomorrow around noon CDT.

    I still need to set our starting point and planet, but the timeline will be canon to that period.

    I'll post some house rules / suggestions up to give you all a feel for how I want to run things. I think everything will be fairly reasonable and not all that shocking - just how I like to run my ship. I'm open to feedback if you think anything will be overly restrictive or whatnot.

    The ship is set, but I'll probably add a skiff of some sort on there as well. The shuttle will be a basic one, but I'll include that as well.

    I'm working off of about two hours of sleep due to allergies or strep throat or something, but while I'm coherent, is there any additional information you all will want set at this point or that I'm forgetting about?

    Looking forward to this and hope we can get started by this weekend, if not sooner.

    Reading over everyone's character sheets, it looks like we have a mechanically diverse crew, at least (quite the sausage-fest, though. ). Any thoughts on who owns the ship? It seems like Lance, Sami, Orson, and possibly Sam are the crew, while Siobhan and Adrian are sign-ons who have been incorporated in one way or another? Trying to piece out our relationships to each other, and also who Siobhan might feel particular loyalty towards.

    Should Lance have an extra 2 points somewhere in his attributes? It looks to me like his Flaws and Talents aren't balanced, and it isn't reflected in his Attribute scores, but I could be wrong.

    Also, I kind of feel like Sami's "Steady Clam" talent is a little niche? +2 step bonus to handling shellfish?

    If Adrian isn't captain/owner, dead captain seems the next best to me, he/she could have gathered the four crew, maybe an alliance leader who knew Lance and Sami,

    The Browncoat bar on U day is a good idea but Orson's solution would be forging a warrant for the troublemakers arrest and alerting the authorities, the old captain could notice him using a databook and offer him work, but he is a jobbing mechanic, Orson will sign on with any ship

    I dont know who would be the replacement captain but Lance does have high discipline and a specialty

    Ideas on relationship possibilities

    Orson would see Siobhan as a celebrity/hero and offer her all sorts of secret files and conspiracies, even knowing her style of reporting hoping he'll interest her with one, so he'd actually be pretty loyal to her. He could have worked out that one of her planned interviews was a trap for her loyalty trait.

    He'd argue a lot with Sami and maybe even come to blows but lose quickly and put their differences aside for the job

    With Lance he'd mostly avoid the war and politics, mostly talk shop

    If Sam or Orson are recent hires then Orson would be intimidated but curious, if we've both been working together then I've forged his documents and kept his secret, maybe with one or two others, Sami seems an interesting choice for fellow confidant

    Orson might see Adrian as a big brother/mentor and try to impress him and play with Giant to relax

    Proposal for how the crew came together

    Adrian found the ship while out and out about in the badlands of Athens. Vermin had torn up most of the wiring, but the mechanics were still sound. Seeing the need for a mechanic, Adrian got in touch with Orson, who in turn got Onyx Wind ready to fly. They frequented spacer bars until they came across Lance. He wasn't too happy working with a former Browncoat and a criminal, but it seemed better than burning out his liver in a crappy bar. Through him, they found Sami, as having someone good with a gun and a scalpel is of obvious help. Sam came on as hired muscle, and Siobhan could have come aboard for any number of reasons.
