Default The Ultra-Brick Awards. Round 1

With the Brick Awards Finale, 658 was declared the Golden Brick, and 63 strips were left with no votes whatsoever, after two entire tournaments. We're here to find the most ignored bricks of all time. Even the loneliest brick deserves our love. I give you the Ultra-Brick Awards.

The format is simple: The leftovers are piled together, randomly scooped up in groups of 10 (as much as possible), and ran through. In these rounds, vote for the strip that is your most-favorite! Please bold your votes, like this. We will then hold a small vote at the end to find out who was the best of the round (declared a Fools-Golden Brick), pile up the remaining leftovers, and repeat the process with as many rounds as it takes to get a defined no-vote champion. In the likely event that this ends with several strips that receive votes and none that have zero-votes, or we have four or fewer no-vote champions, all of them with the minimum count will be declared as Super-Bricks and a final vote of least-favorite, instead of a vote for most-favorite, among these Super-Bricks will determine the Ultra-Brick. So without further ado, I present to you the Ultra-Brick Awards:

This is Round 1 and in this round there are 63 bricks remaining. This round will consist of 6 votes, alternating between 11 and 10 strips each, and a final vote of 6. The lowest strip remaining is 72 and the highest strip remaining is 992.

    117 - Delayed Gratification
    152 - Arrow Time
    163 - A Man, A Dwarf, and a Kitty
    265 - A Tale of Two Paladins
318 - The Move Action of Shame
    342 - Dangling the Bait
    356 - Knight Takes Pawn
    528 - The Ghost Screamer
769 - Because Really, That Would Be Less Improbable
    847 - Dropping the Ball
915 - Custom Framing While You Wait

Wow, I'm honestly surprised some of these haven't received any votes at all.

I narrowed it down to 117 'cause early MitD, 265 'cause Miko vs Hinjo + Belkar, and 769 'cause Ian Starshine.

In the end, I can't help but be drawn to anything with Belkar, even if it's just Belkar drawn on the wall with blood. So #265 for me.

265 Because "... and so he said 'Rectum,' I damn near killed him. And that's the story of how I became a Paladin." Is simply too funny.

I know that it's a commonly-used gag, but Rich absolutely nails it.

I really want to vote for 152, because I remember the inanity of people absolutely insisting that the strip 425 reference to Dienekes's line about fighting in the shade HAD to be a (movie) 300 reference because there was no other way Rich would reference that line.

Despite the fact that he'd demonstrably referenced the line in strip 152 years and 277 strips earlier and that this had been pointed out and that Rich had SAID it was not a movie reference.

One of those glorious moments on the forums. Added to by the fact that much of the argument is on the #439 strip discussion, and 439 completely lacks a Battle of Thermopylae reference so it was badly off topic as well as showing people being totally oblivious.

I really want to vote that way, but Roy and Julia in 342 are just too perfect. Roy's speechifying over his sister's attempts to warn him, insulting of his sister's clothes, and then her "Nothing that can't wait a few rounds big brother" is just perfect.

Struggling between 769 and 915. Both of them were favourites of mine, when they happened, for their last panel exchanges. But it's a tough choice between Ian's convoluted conspiracy theorising, and Tarquin's sociopathic narcissism. I think in the end I have to go with 769, because it revealed a lot about Ian at the time, while we already knew how bad Tarquin was.
Geez, what is it with that guy and needing to figure out all the fiddly little details?

I know, right? It's called "Suspension of Disbelief"...

Well, I can't say I'm surprised that most of these ultra-bricked. Makes it more difficult to chose, so this contest will be plenty of fun. I think I'll go with #769.

    Anyway, I vote for 265.

How can you wonder when it's all explained in the OP?

Anyway, I agree with DeliaP. I vote for 769 for Ian, and Belkar's statement about Roy being a plant

915 is a close second. "Starting two minutes ago".

Least favourite: probably 847 or even worse 356.

Well, we're at the point of this series where a lot of great pages have already been sorted. Most of the pages here... well, to be blunt, kind of deserve to be here.

Emphasis being "most". There's still some good ones here; I personally have it narrowed down to 265, 318, 342, and 769.

I think, if I were to vote for which one I want to WIN this round, I'd go 342. But instead, I'm going to try to knock one of these 63 strips out of Ultra Brick contention. I'm not surprised #318 took this long to get recognition, but that ends today. V blowing up Belkar was an entertaining running gag while it was happening, and this was one of the better ones. Plus, you know, plot importance, old-school Elan, etc.

Don't worry. It took some minor discussions between littlebum and I (and a few other people) to even figure out the format to use. I wasn't even sure how to close the loop if we had three strips all with one-vote, or something like that, until the day I posted this.

Some of these strips include the most plot-advancing strips I've seen. Very important, very useful stuff, but when I go through the archive I read these pages and then click the next page button without a second thought.

We've had people intentionally save bricks before in the other tournaments, so this is fine, but there is a line to it. I'm keeping track of the strips that have one-votes, as a backup. Since we are so close and so many of these aren't that popular, and I can see people gaming the system, I'm going by probability. To get to 63 strips after two tournaments with 1000 strips to start, the bricking rate should be (63/1000)^(1/2), or about 25%. We're still at 18%, in this round, so it's within normal variation from what I've seen since I've been watching these strips. But if the next 6 rounds don't average above 20%, I may do a run of the 1-votes and see what bricks out of those, just to stop system gaming. I don't think it's needed yet.

In the meantime, join us with the next vote!

This vote for 915 was posted last week, I swear it was, but I obviously hit "Preview" instead of "Submit" and then went to bed. Blame it on the 20-hour days I was putting in.

Too late to get on record? I realize it won't change the winner, I just wanted to participate.
