LA for Planetar Angel
I was wondering if someone could advise me of a reasonable LA for a Planetar Angel

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
The Planetar has +8 LA.
EDIT: The Planetar has - LA, which I think means that it shouldn't be a PC at all.
EDIT 2: If I has to use one for a PC, I'd say maybe +10 LA. You might want a second opinion or five on that, though.Last edited by Arang; 2007-07-10 at 07:04 AM.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
The +8 LA is probably a minimum. After all, it has shape changing abilities, casts up to 9th level cleric spells, has a variety of at will powers, and has some powerful always on powers. Then you still have to add flight, a stack of resistances, and regeneration.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
Too innately powerful/weird to balance as a PC, which is what an LA of "-" means. Consider as an alternative an Astral Deva, which has 12 Hit Dice and a listed +8 Level Adjustment, meaning they start at effective character level 20.
Planetars are significantly more powerful than Devas, especially in a PC role with all their Spell-Like Abilities, free casting, and Regeneration. I'd say they're at least +12 or +14 LA, putting their ECL in the upper 20's.Spoiler

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
I agree with Nerd-o-rama. LA "-" races just shouldn't be played in most cases.
Also, you could just have 20th level Favored Soul. That would essentially approximate most of their abilities one way or another.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
A Level adjustment of - means that the race is unplayable as an ECL 20 character and hence you need to either pick a lower class or equally be playing an epic level campaign in which case the DM can determine the ECL but looking at it your looking at about +11-14 or so as its LA so a quite high ECL

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
Its for an Epic Gestalt game so the high LA isn't such an issue

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
I'd give it +12 LA. It's an incredibly powerful tool in the hands of a player.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
LA + 14
A good quick rule for outsiders is to give them an LA as high as their standard HD.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
If someone wants to play an angel, Sean K. Reynolds book "Anger of Angels" (Sword & Sorcery) has many varieties that are fleshed out a bit better than what the Monster Manuals give you. Worth a look.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
14 LA +14HD= 28ECL.
The thing is only CR-16. Which means it isn't THAT powerful. I think the +10 LA is sufficient. You're still gonna be at ECL-24 with a +10LA. Which means 4 planetars could take on a solar(sounds about right to me).I am continuing to have a social life. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: LA for Planetar Angel
LA and CR have next to nothing to do with one another.
In combat, a monster only lives for about four rounds, so he only has one chance to use his "1/day" abilities and doesn't get to use those "at will" abilities very much.
However, as a PC, a creature survives for months in-game, and gets to use those sickeningly powerful "at will" abilities any time he likes.
Compare the mind flayer's CR to his LA, for example. A mind flayer is an ECL sixteen creature!
