    Default Throwing Specialist Feat

Hi all, I'm new to the world of d and d and I'm reaching Level 4 on my first character. I wanted to make throwing weapons a niche of his, but there were no feats to accommodate this. I did some research on home brewing feats and wanted to know what you guys think about this (overpowered, under powered, ect) Thank you!

    Thrown Weapon Specialist
    Practiced
Add +1 to either Strength or Dexterity
    Deadeye
Bonus Action attacks made by throwing weapons are treated as normal attacks (gain proficiency and str or dex modifier to attack roll and damage roll)
    Ricochet
Once per combat, you can choose to attempt to ricochet you’re weapon off one target you hit, to another within the range of the original target. You make separate attack and damage rolls to each target, but you don't add modifiers to the damage of your second target.

Looking at this, a few things come to mind.

    1. What class are you? If you're a fighter or ranger, the two-weapon fighting style already applies to off-hand thrown weapons, so you shouldn't need the second benefit. Maybe a stupid question, but since you're new I'm not taking any chances.

    2. You say something about applying proficiency to off-hand attacks, but that shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Dual wielding without the two-weapon fighting style only removes your ability modifier from the damage roll. And unless your DM houseruled it, proficiency never gets added to the damage roll.

    3. There's no such thing as "once per combat" in 5e. It should be once per short rest.

Balance-wise, it seems alright. It's kind of hard to estimate the power of a feat, since the existing ones vary quite a bit. I think since you can only do it once per short rest, you can afford to let the ricochet attack deal full damage. Otherwise it's probably not gonna be very satisfying to use either.

However, the feat doesn't fix the main problem that throwing weapons have, which is that by the rules, you can only draw one weapon per turn. That means it's impossible to keep up making two or more thrown attacks per round. Whether this is a problem depends on whether your DM enforces it. If he does (or if you think he might start questioning it when you get more attacks per round), you should include a feature that fixes this problem. Either say you can draw a new weapon for free whenever you throw one or, if you don't mind the silliness, make the weapons bounce back to you when thrown.

Thanks for the feedback, I am a tempest cleric and I'm going for a pirate vibe, hence the throwing of my hand-axes, I just like the image of him chucking axes then bringing down the holy wrath. We play our game very loose, as in we just have a general sense of the rules. Thanks for clearing up the proficiency modifier, I was unaware of that, I like the idea of the once per short rest, and full damage, it makes it more fun.

Ill talk to our DM about the adjustments. But i do like the idea of boomerang hand axes....

Alright, sounds like a great concept. As a cleric you'll never get more than two attacks per round, and letting people draw two weapons simultaneously (one with each hand) is a very common house rule anyways. (By the normal rules you need the Dual Wielder feat to do this, but people tend to ignore this because it's needlessly restrictive.) So you should be fine there.
