Demigods!! Tips and advices needed!!!

So, I am creating a setting where there are demigods, heroes who did something cool enough for a God to give them a devine rank!!!
Has anyone something like that before?? If you did, how could you make them look cool without being too overpowered, because I want the players to use this option without being really stronger than the rest of the party.
Also what kind of trials should I put my players through to succeed? A series of trials or a single difficult one?
I am open to ideas!! :D

While I think it's entirely possible to balance for a group of characters who is Divine Rank 0, there isn't really a way to give one character a divine rank without it completely changing their power level with the rest of the party.

Something you might want to look into is Mythic Adventures from Pathfinder.
