Vaarsuvius is a wizard, not a super wizard/sorcerer prestige class. Every hypothetical Empowered Magic Missile they prepared is a Fireball they didn't prepare.

Yes, talking is a free action, but you still need to eventually do something besides theorize and talk, of you want to be involved in the fight.

Sometimes I wonder if our DM is going easy on us for never using glitterdust or invisibility purge against our invisibility or if they just don't have the finesse to prepare such spells...

Magic Missile has the advantage of never missing and the potentially even greater advantage of being a point-target effect. If V prepared for this trip by preparing mostly Fireball spells (a highly logical choice given that any fight will be at range and that so many ice creatures are weak to fire) then V might not have anything else that doesn't risk roasting an ally.

Unfortunately, they're bent on destroying our clerically-challenged heroes.

Magic Missile has the advantage of never missing and the potentially even greater advantage of being a point-target effect.

And the advantage of only taking a first-level slot, and the advantage that it being stopped almost always means the target has spell resistance. It's a highly efficient "what am I fighting here?" spell for the slot.

Haste makes waste. Haley would have been better off if she had stood off and peppered the caster, disrupting spell casting from outside spell, and certainly melee range. She deviated from the perfectly serviceable plan of her finishing off softened up targets provided by V and now pays the iron price.

Given that their primary enemy (Xykon) is a primary caster you'd hope they would have anti-caster strategy more thoroughly ingrained.
