Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast. You know only a little of Phandalin, some ancient event caused it to be abandoned, and only recently has it been reinhabited, mostly by miners seeking gold in the nearby hills. Some gold does stream from the tiny town, but you've heard no tales of anyone truly striking it rich.
Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. he then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."
You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, the late spring weather, warm and dry, making for good travel. The mud from the early spring rains has long since dried to a well-packed road, and if the occasional pot-hole causes the wagon to sway, at least its large wheels and slow pace of travel - two oxen pull the thing - keep it from being a bumpy ride.
Looking over the wagon you can see that Gundren must be planning to be underground for a good long time. It's packed full of mining supplies and food, including sacks of flour and beans, casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, plus shovels, lanterns, picks and crowbars.
While on the High Road, you've met the occasional traveler, some coming toward you on their way back to Neverwinter, and some overtaking you from behind and heading further down the road. Occasionally you've met with a patrol of the Mintarn Hammer, a mercenary outfit mostly composed of dwarves, that keep the peace in Neverwinter, and for a few days' travel beyond its borders. They merely nod and you and walk on - not many dwarves enjoy riding horses, so these patrols are generally on foot.
Earlier today, though, you've turned off the High Road and onto the Triboar Trail. Since then, traffic has ceased. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
Spoiler: Driving the WagonThe wagon is drawn by a pair of oxen. If no one is holding the reins, they stop where they are. One person needs to be up in the driver's seat in order to keep moving. No particular skill is needed to drive the wagon, so that can be any of you.
Spoiler: Marching OrderLet me know who is driving. Also there is space in the driver's seat for one other person. The others can be riding in the wagon, or anywhere around, just let me know where each of you are for the majority of the day while you travel. Also, now is a good time to set up how you guys camp - do you set a watch? If so, are there rotations, or a set schedule, or do you draw lots? Do you pitch tents? Light a campfire or lantern?
Spoiler: OOCFor the rest of today, go ahead and use this thread to introduce your characters to each other, hash out how you may have known Gundren, or why you might want to be heading to Phandalin in particular. I'll be rereading your sheets and probably IMing some of you some potential connections you have.

Orianna is sitting on a crate in the back of the wagon, humming to herself as she watches the scenery to the left, absentmindedly creating a scent of strawberries that drifts away into the air.
"So. How did you all meet Gundren? I performed at an inn he frequented, and after the.... Er....
Incident.... He offered me a job."Last edited by Black Socks; 2016-11-07 at 09:37 AM.

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
Kolin looks back from the reins of the wagon, making sure the oxen keep a steady pace. "Ah, I was only in Neverwinter about a month or so, looking for someone that needed help with a job. Sure am happy to be going to a small town again, never really was one for big cities."
I walk away from the corpse...eyelids fluttering in the wind.

Carric sits against a wall in the back of the wagon, shoulder-length honey coloured hair bound behind him, his arms folded behind his head and his eyes half shut.
"I, quite simply, help people. I offered my assistance to those who passed and conversed with and behold, one of the few who accepted my offer was our good dwarven friend!"

The sound of harness creaking, the breathing of the oxen like a bellows, the clatter of the wagon rolling over the rough road, fill the momentary silence.

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
Aelor "El" Liadon: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1000320
"Oh no, you can't just leave that hanging," says El. "Please tell us, what was The Incident. We're dying to know."
He glances back at her face and adds "Don't worry, I will be sure to share my The Incident, or maybe a few. It's going to be a long trip after all."
A little later he keeps his promise and recalls his first meeting with Gundren. "Well I first met Gundren a few years ago. You see Kosef, who is - was - a good, well we were crewmates. Anyway, Kosef had this new hat, which he was very proud of, and he'd misplaced it. And he saw this guy, who was with Gundren, wearing what looked like Kosef's hat."
"Well there some angry words, and maybe a bit of shoving, and the watch got called, and it was all looking pretty bad for us when Kosef's hat turned up. It would have been impossible to explain but Gundren was a real gentleman and, somehow, managed to sort everything with watch. Just as well, I'm pretty sure the captain would have sailed without us." El looks slightly embarrased by the end of the tale, it might not go down so well in this company.
Each morning and evening El made sure that the oxen were fed and watered. While the party travelled he mostly walked alongside the oxen, scanning the sides of the road ahead for potential and occasionally checking the beasts for problems.Last edited by aguaracu; 2016-11-07 at 05:02 PM.

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
As the day progresses, the sun approaches its zenith, and it begins to get quite hot. The landscape slowly changes over the course of the morning, from open plains to sparse forest. Those who are scouting relish the cool shade under the scattered groves of oaks and maples, the occasional stand of pines. Game seems plentiful here; it doesn't seem like much human traffic disturbs the natural order in this region. You're truly approaching the middle of nowhere.
Spoiler: OOCSo if I have this right, Orianna and Carric are riding, Kolin is driving, El is walking with the oxen, and Lucian is scouting ahead. Not sure I caught where Rolen is. Feel free to explore any other character-building here. I'll move this forward in the morning.Last edited by Armored Walrus; 2016-11-07 at 07:29 PM.

This causes Orianna to break down in silent laughter for a moment.
"Oh, yes. Very much. Getting caught in a rather compromising position, becoming the centre of a huge scandal, and eventually a political brawl that brought down the barony in the area certainly taught him a lesson.
....And look at that! You've made me tell everything! Very clever."

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
As you can see. Lucian itŽs kind of a loner... he comes and goes... sharing a good laughter when ever heŽs around... he listens to OriannaŽs story.. after hearing how he lost the barony Lucian is grinning with approval Very well... once while in the forest, i saw 3 adventurers.. clearly new at it... planning on how to defeat a crocodile in the water. I have never seen 3 people failing so swift and poorly... i was able to save a little halfling.. the other two werenŽt so lucky.. one tried to wrestle the beast.. the other tried to jump on top from a tree... missing his mark.. and snapping his neck in the process..
As he finishes he goes scouting ahead and waiting for the caravan.

As you continue down the trail, the forest begins to grow thicker. There are no longer any gaps between copses; this is one single forest.
Spoiler: For LucianAs you come around a bend, roughly 100 feet ahead of your party, you spot two dead horses sprawled in the road about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
Kolin's ear perks up at the mention of the thugs, "I say we pay them a visit right after this. Those people probably have enough on their hands without the thugs messing things up." He felt bad that villagers in an out-of-the-way town were being terrorized, he himself knowing how hard it can be to get by sometimes.

Re: Walrus' Lost Mine of Phandelver [IC]
Continuing down the trail, you notice Lucian round a bend in the trail a few dozen yards ahead of you.
Spoiler: LucianAs you approach the dead horse, one thing becomes clear, these are definitely the horses rode by Gundren and Sildar when they left Neverwinter. They very obviously died from having been shot by the arrows. The saddlebags have been looted, and nearby lies and empty map case. This is all you are able to register before your attention is diverted by arrows flying out of the woods beyond the embankment.
Spoiler: Attack rolls[roll]Attack 1 (1d20+4)[9] Damage (1d6+2)[6] in case crit (1d6)[3]
Attack 2 (1d20+4)[5] Damage (1d6+2)[6] in case crit (1d6)[6]
Catching you completely flat-footed, two short, green-skinned humanoids in grungy leather step out from the trees about ten yards ahead of you and fire their shortbows at you, then duck back into the trees. Two more burst from cover and run toward you, each holding a shield in one hand and scimitar in the other. They get within ten feet of you and begin to circle warily, watching how you will react to the ambush.
Spoiler: OOCThe two melee goblins will take the Dodge action this round, they did not have enough movement to reach you without dashing. The bow goblins will take a bonus action to Hide once they are screened behind the trees again. Stealth rolls: Bow goblin on left side of the road: (1d20+6)[21] Bow goblin on right side of the road: (1d20+6)[8]
Suddenly you hear sounds of combat from around the bend; bowstrings snap, and a high-pitched voice bellowing what sounds like a battle-cry.
Spoiler: EditGo see the OOC thread for instructions.Last edited by Armored Walrus; 2016-11-08 at 03:48 PM.

Aelor "El" Liadon: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1000320
At the sound of fighting from around the bend El rushes forwards. Rounding the corner, he draws his axe and sprints to the elf's side.
"DEATH TO PIRATES!"
Spoiler:Movement + dash action = 60'. I think this puts El within 5' of Lucian, diagonally to one side of him.
Woohoo! First fight and the party is all over the map. That's good right?
Also, I read Lucian's spoiler to get layout, hope that's ok.
