So, recommend me some chessex dice...
I really liked my purchase of the transparent teal chessex dice, but I want to see if there is any more dice that would look very nice. Could you recommend me some cool looking, yet clear-to-read dice? Thanks!

Re: So, recommend me some chessex dice...
I've got several sets, and I've helped my girlfriend and siblings pick out a few of their own. The translucent green sets pop nicely on most tables, I've found. I also have a black/silver set with green numbers, and they're nice and legible under most lights. The green/black set with gold numbers is quite cool-looking, although the color blends tend to vary on multicolored sets, so the gold may not read well if you don't have much more than a lamp or two lighting the room. I've also got a set with various shades of green and silver swirled together (sort of like those marble-y handsoaps in some bathrooms) with silver numbers, but they're actually quite hard to read under most conditions.
The purple, blue, and smoke translucent dice are very easy to read, since they have white numbers, but I wouldn't recommend the fully-clear or yellow sets, since the white can be hard to pick up. The ivory and white opaque sets are classics. They may seem unappealing at first glance, since you can pick up a run-of-the-mill set of white d6s for a couple of bucks at pretty much any store, but the stark white with black numbers is instantly readable in most any light, even across the table. The Gemini product line is my personal favorite, but the Borealis, Cirrus, and Frosted sets have plenty of outstanding color combinations.
Based on your enjoyment of the translucent teal set, I can recommend the Gemini-line translucent teal/green with gold, although they may be somewhat harder to read on a brightly-colored surface in harsh lighting. I've got the Chessex catalog saved on my computer and phone, so if you'd like further input from me, I'm available anywhere.I do not think the way you think. If you try to apply your own mindset to the things I say, there will be miscommunications. If something I say seems odd to you or feels like it's missing steps, ask for clarification. I'm not some unreasonable, unknowable entity beyond your mortal comprehension, I'm just autistic and have memory problems.

Thanks for the recommendation! I tool a look at one set of chessex dice, and found one that seems to agree with me. It's a festive series carousel color, which on the Amazon page seems to have an oil pattern of sorts. I don't know what it looks like in actuality, though. Do you happen to have one of those kinds of dice?

It's really hard to recommend dice because it's very much a personal taste thing. I do think that if you have a FLGS and can see the dice in person that you do that rather than pick based on the Amazon marketing photos. Short of that, if you can find something photographed in "normal" light on a non-white or non-black background, you might compare that way. Most of the more common colors have been photographed by someone who isn't trying to sell the things. If you can find more than one example of a color, that might be good too.
I agree with Taffy, though, that you will get more mileage out of a dark color with white numbering. Gold numbering with something that sufficiently contrasts is good too, but you may want to look at them in normal light.

Re: So, recommend me some chessex dice...
Well, if you like the Borealis Teal with Gold, I am a big fan of several others of that line:
For bold colors, Royal Purple with Gold (CHX27467) and Magenta with Gold (CHX27424) are even deeper and richer in person than in pix, with the subtle Borealis sparkle, and the gold numbers really pop.
For a more translucent look Purple with White (CHX27407) is almost see-thru with a lot of flop in changing light, while Aquaperple with Black (CHX27420) _is_ see-thru with really fine purple sparkling on the inside. See them in person and you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, good hunting, E
P.S. The CHX codes are for the 7xpolyhedral die sets...

Re: So, recommend me some chessex dice...
I have one of those red/black with gold numbers sets. They're good if you play in a brightly lit room, but if not it's almost impossible to read them. I find this is true of most sets with gold numbers, actually... I've stopped using most of my "pretty" dice because the room we usually play in has soft indirect lighting and telling the difference between 13/16/18/19 on those d20's becomes difficult. Similarly, my old translucent smoke-with-red dice that I used to love when I was in college and playing in a room with fluorescent lighting are really bad in my current gaming environment.
By contrast, the translucent red with white numbers/blue with white numbers, purple with white numbers dice are easy to read in most any light, so I've found myself falling back on those of late.
