    The Ayin, New Ajivha

Voices screamed in the distance. They weren't real. The visions were getting worse. What he'd seen in the mirrors and his dreams bled into the waking world and became difficult to tell apart from it. He fought hard to keep it from those around him, and even more so from the public of the city, and was so far succeeding as much as the toll of it all took on him.

What wasn't on fire by this point, covered in scarabs, made of cracking glass, screaming, or bloody... seemed fine.

His work itself seemed fine. The cults had been purged as far as anyone could tell and the sympathizers had been dealt with. The reclamation and construction programs were going well. Armies were being raised beside the militias and new weapons were being made by the day. Farms and cropland were carefully worked and reworked to the ever expanding specifications of the sages responsible for them.

Word of the Vatnahlifir's victory and the vast quantity of resources and manpower that were now needed to secure the Khaganate against the East came and in turn they were approved and sent.

Along with it went the Ilkhan, Mimar, with his personal interest in Mereton and the need for an overseer over the defence of such a large front. The projects in Bedlam went to he was told one of the Musir, Kaya, who he knew to have an interest in the occult and conjurers in particular.

Another leaving him to work away from the city. It was becoming lonely in the city despite the number of faces surrounding him. Perhaps it was for the better though with what he was experiencing. He continued to wait and hope he could be helped when Sinan returned and he could go back to his proper duties and quiet.

    The Ducal Palace, Xule

With the double royal wedding fast approaching, Cosimo could get little sleep as it was. And then there was the figure.

At first he had thought she was just a dream, or perhaps a hallucination brought on by the herbs he smoked. But she kept appearing, not every night but enough that he came to expect her. The shape of a woman standing over him – never moving from her spot, instead just standing and waiting. For what, he didn’t know. If he moved even the slightest muscle, then she vanished, not to be seen for at least another night.

He didn’t tell anyone. There was nobody he could really trust, except Valencia. And Valencia would no doubt blame his continued use of herbs, and he would never hear the end of it from her. So he remained silent, waiting to see if there was any change.

7 - Snow is pretty, and brings a bit of relief. It is as if the world takes a pause to grant us a respite. Though their cults are not very active during this time, I should not assume the mind wasps are idle while they are underground. It is not enough to secure the dreams of our people. We must keep them informed so that they do not fall for the wasps lies.

8 - Administrator Gram has brought to my attention a pervasive jest within the Administratum. Evidentally my emphasis on education has been likened to religion. The church of Awn, they say. I will admit that I am concerned that the Administratum is not taking this initiative seriously, but I did not rattle Gram too hard I hope.

9 - An Idea. Let us fight the yellow cults, with education. I will ask Administrator Ny, to organize an order of travelling educators. Their principle mission will be to fight the mind wasp lies, and bring knowledge to those outside our Kingdom.

17 - I have made a decision, I will allow Terris to make her hedge, but only along the western border.

26 - Terris says she has cuttings prepared, I hope I am not making a mistake.

    February 1184 (Turn 60, Winter)

As the cycle came to a close things became very predictable across the lands.

The Ajivhans continued their long and tedious efforts to reclaim loyalties and establish a perimeter through the Khaganate. The Disciples of Awn worked to rebuild the Raptor States in their image and construct a nation capable of withstanding the eroding forces of the world. The Xulians... The Xulians sought to rebuild their ancient empire and forge anew in the world.

The rest went on as they always had. The Empire of the Basalt Throne continued to shore up their forces along the coast, studying the contamination brought on by aberrant occupation from afar, working to understand the bizarre nature of it. The Rising Light under the strains of occupation on multiple fronts continued to rebuild even as pieces of it dissolved without the prophetess, work went on. The Silverplume Confederacy in the wake of revolution and syndicated factions seizing control of the means of production discussed openly the invasion of their ancient homeland and the destruction of those that had exiled them for their warped natures.

New Avringae- what could be called New Avringae wallowed in filth and corruption, or light depending upon who you asked. The Yellow god and the cults around it held full sway over what had swiftly become the wasteland known as New Avringae, and the insect-like creatures that came in the wake of the dreams and worship walked openly in the light of both day and the sickly yellow lights of the towers built in the image of those of the Rising Light.

The Navasti League, what remained of it continued to peddle their wares across the continent. A few mercenary bands descending from their navies began to work with the trading companies building off of their lineage. Life was good if not for the horrors witnessed years ago.

    The world went on.

    The Great Temple, Xule

Valencia couldn't quite believe this day had come. It seemed only yesterday that her younger brother had been a little boy, a tool in the hands of overambitious courtiers. Now he was here at his wedding, surrounded by admirers and no less than two brides-to-be.

To one side of Valencia sat Moria, dressed in his finest robes. To the other was Mariana, holding Benito in her lap. The six-month-old baby was noticeably darker in complexion than the rest of his family, taking after his late mother, but otherwise reminded her very much of her earliest memories of Cosimo. She was broken out of her train of thought, however, when the priest at the head of the temple began speaking.

"By the Grace of the Gods, His Imperial Majesty Cosimo IV, Emperor of Aurora, Guiding Light of the Argent Confederacy, King of Nova Aurora, Grand Duke of Xule, Prince of Oilean Uisce and Lot-Vos, and Hereditary Duke of Verde." The priest took a deep breath. "Do you take Nerissa of the House of Sung to be your Empress?"

"I do." Cosimo turned to look at the demure girl by his side.

"And do you take Cyrica of the House of Verde to be your Esteemed Consort?"

"I do." He gave a lingering glance at the older woman with dusk red hair standing on the other side of him. It was hard to believe that she was really a monster.

Nerissa and Cyrica then took their vows in turn. Polygamous marriage might have fallen out of fashion in recent times in Xule, but as legal experts had been quick to stress, never actually legally abolished. Besides, Cosimo's word was as good as law, at least as far as the ordinary populace were concerned.

"Let this be a new beginning for the House of Verde!" the priest warbled as the crowd around her broke out into cheers. Cosimo turned and he caught her eye, giving her a quick wink. Valencia grinned back. She might not know what the future held, for good or ill, but at least for that one day, she was absolutely content with her place in the world.

    Default Update: March 1184 - February 1189 (Timeskip 2)

    March 1184 - February 1189

Three years passed as winter turned to fall. Civilization returned to the world as simple as it may be and in places began to fall to ruin as it always did. The storms settled for a time, returned, and passed again. Men were killed, rose from the dead, and were killed again until they either found peace or torment. The spirits continued to roam the lands in perpetual hunger and madness. The pain of the corruptions continued to spread.

    Life went on.

Nations fell to ruin and corruption, the army of Heathens and the people of New Avringae. Others to stagnation, such would be the fate of the cult of the Rising Light.

Those that went on continued to build and grow and spread across the continent. Ajivhans unifying their command of their people through their West and East, South and North. Armies gathering along their borders as they prepared for coming wars and the building of walls.

The Disciples of Awn began the slow reunification of the Raptor States, beginning with the East. Time would tell how their plans payed off, if they would rebuild their ancient republic and drive away the Yellow as they worked quickly to cleanse the minds of their people.

The Xulians chose their path and began the reconstruction of their ancient empire, molding it from the jungles of Nova Aurora, the remnants of the Khaloric swarm, and the Corpus Verde in the image of their island and fleeting memories of the past.

Others such as the Harconin Protectorate and the Empire of the Basalt Throne continued to work their lands and study the earth. The remnants of the Navasti further established themselves in trade across the continent. And the Silverplume, they continued to eye the mainland and their kin that had long ago exiled them.

The so-called Fifth Age of mortal reclamation went on and new nations began to rise.

    The Eastern Plains of Ajivha

Across the Eastern Plains of Ajivha wandered the Khagan of the city, long had been his labour and long had been his discussions with the Krakar known as Awn. The world was still falling apart despite time's best efforts and he wondered how much of a position he was in to fix it if an actual god was wandering the world like this. Not that he thought it was a god. He didn't feel it. Or- what he felt was very un-godlike.

Not that he could explain that to ones such as Awn helpful as his information may be on the activities of the cults and their creatures. Tunnels. Tunnels would somewhat explain what he had seen in that cave, and how they were moving as they were.

Word was sent as he moved, runners. Simple orders were given. Anything found was to be mapped and then destroyed with explosives. And everything around them. All that could be done was done.

He wandered alone on the long journey back to Saranda, occasionally coming upon a lone hunter or small band as he walked. A small village that the army had passed the previous year on the path to clearing out the cult.

Sinan was ambivalent about walking, but that was still more pleasant than alot of things on his mind. It gave him time to think or to not as he simply put one foot infront of another.

    New Ajivha

Years passed with the return of Sinan, and in time the burdens of the Ayin were eased. Little work was needed upon him or so it seemed and the visions slowly left him, as did the dreams. Sinan turned from him to the children and Amirah shortly after, correcting flaws he found in his work and developing the alterations further.

The passage of time as much as it pained him eased the suffering brought on by the nightmares he had been made aware of, of the strange nightmare world he learned Sinan lived his days in by comparison to everyone else. It was worse for him. As much as the Ayin had seen it was as he was told only a minute fraction of it.

Little changed throughout the city over the years and still his work went on. Presses were constructed and the knowledge of the city began to spread however slowly that may be, the majority being illiterate and unable to benefit from the surplus of books, manuals, and handbooks flooding what had been a rather small market before. The Janissaries and the merchants of the city ate it up though with the previous scarcity. Missionaries were quick to carry out what they were allowed across the Khaganate, mostly scripture they payed to print and farming manuals to speed construction of forest farms out in the wild.

The armies benefited immensely from the spread of arms manuals, as they armed and assembled across the Khagan's domain. A strong defensive line. It would be seen to that no army would ever again threaten the Ajivhan people. Not even spirits.

    They would be ready.

He thought he would be... atleast until the dreams of glass returned.

In their current incarnation they are primarily composed of old guard Janissaries and the recently organized or re-organized variety of forces who've served beside them over the centuries, they function as honour guard and praetorians of the city. Their standard is a black tug banner.

The Bronze Order of the Father - A knightly order founded by Sinan to honour the soldiers of New Ajivha and the deity Gangari. Their hierarchy and activities are highly tied to the Kheshig with their original members primarily Corvan Janissaries and priests within the previous Kheshig. Their standard is a green banner with a bronze star-spiral mark in the center.

The Golden Order of the City - A knightly order founded by Sinan to honour the soldiers of New Ajivha and in remembrance of Grand Ajivha. Their hierarchy and activities are highly tied to the Kheshig with their original members composed of Ajivhan descended elders of the Janissaries. The Vatnahlifir - A force stationed in Karsha formed entirely of fedayeen, warped Janissaries, and conjurers under the direct authority of Sinan. Little is known of them or their duties, however their soldiers are often believed within the Khaganate to operate within other forces and to those aware of them the mere hint of their presence is often seen as a dread omen. What's seen of them tends to be that of extremely disciplined and uniformly skilled soldiers commonly wearing a variety of black panoply armours marked heavily with pseudo-runes, one resembling an axe prominently displayed on all of them. Their standard is commonly what is assumed to be a repurposed piece of tapestry depicting a 'danse macabre.'

The Silver Order of the Daughter - A scholarly order founded by Sinan to honour the courage of those who'd fought on Karsha during an assault by aberrations on the Sarandan channel, and in honour of the deity Ashlif. Their standard is a black banner with a stylized silver tree in the center.

Their standard is a black banner with a stylized set of white scales in the center.

The Fraternal Order of the Hajal - An informal order composed of Vatnahlifir agents associated with the Ayin, and in turn those nominated by them for entrance into it. Their activities are little known and most amongst them are members of other orders associated with the Vatnahlifir, it's unsure outside of the order what exactly it is that they do or why they were founded, but there is a commonality of an interest in falconry amongst them. Their standard is a white silk banner with a stylized red bird upon it in the image of an ancient Ajivhan Hajal, rarely seen in these days.

The Occultic Order of the Broken Chain - A scholarly order founded by Sinan to honour the courage of those who'd fought on Karsha during an assault by aberrations on the Sarandan channel. Little is known of them outside of the Vatnahlifir aside from their association with the Vatnahlifir and their supposedly being composed entirely of wild mages. Their standard is a grey banner with a roughly stitched ouroboros-like chain in the center of it, always in black thread and always with several broken or shattered links upon it.

Composed of veterans and Janissarial officers, the order is specialized in Aberration hunting and strangely for their posting desert warfare. Their standard is a tan banner with a stylized grey skeleton holding a spear upon it.

The Grey Guard - A force currently stationed in the confederate city of Mosaic. The grey guard is an army primarily composed of grey coats from across the Khaganate and the Northern marshes, led by old guard Janissaries who have little interest in Sinan's new order, supported by Navasti remnants that have settled in Bandar and local Khaganians. Seen by most as what is effectively a foreign legion they are charged with with the defence of the North. Their standard is a grey and white tug banner.

The Blue Guard - A force currently stationed in the the territory of Duskwatch. The blue guard is an an auxiliary force within the Khaganian militaries primarily formed of blue coats from the Navasti enclaves in the Western Khaganate, led by old Navasti captains who turned to the Khaganate after the fall of their land and trusted Janissaries. Formed to protect the Southern Coast and the Western Khaganate in general the blue guard is little respected and often compared to the grey guard in the North, considered relatively poorly armed and unskilled by the standards of the armies in direct service to the Khagan due to their inexperience with fighting on land as their recent comrades have for centuries. Their standard is a blue and white tug banner.

The Occultic Order of the Leviathan - A scholarly order founded to reinforce the Blue guard in Duskwatch. Composed of veterans and Janissarial officers, the order is specialized in naval warfare and aberration hunting. Their standard is a blue banner with a white ouroborous in the center of it.

The Merchant Order of the Drowned - A mercenary order founded to reinforce the Blue guard. Composed of trusted mercenary companies and Janissarial officers, the order is specialized in naval warfare and siege tactics. Their standard is a patchwork blue and green banner.

The Red Guard - A force currently stationed along the Dawn wall, separating the Khaganate and Mereton. The red guard is a force within the Khaganian militaries primarily formed of red coats from across the greater Khaganate, led by their Khans and Janissarial officers posted to keep them in check. Formed to protect the Khaganate from the cults and other problems brewing in Mereton and further North, they are considered a mainline force in the Khaganate and more highly regarded by the Eastern hordes than the other militaries of the Khaganate due to their relative freedom and their lack of conscripted forces. Their standard is a red and white tug banner.

The Merchant Order of the Shield - A mercenary order founded to reinforce the Red guard holding the Dawn's wall between the Khaganate and Mereton. Composed of trusted mercenary companies and Janissarial officers, the order is specialized in siege and guerilla warfare tactics. Their standard is a red banner with a stylized silver star surrounded by a circle in the center of it.
    Spoiler: Khaganian Currencies
    Show

Kaupaloki - A coin made of simulacra crystal coated in silver living metal. Exposed crystal grown and shaped form the marks upon it. The words "in service of Ajivha, Gangari, Ashlif, Cawles, the Dead One, Katalia, Sinan, Andha, and Alhazred" in Old Ajivhan script mark both sides in a circle around the edge. On one side of the coin is a Vatnahlifir axe mark in the center and both the name and rank of the person it was issued to in Old Ajivhan script below it, on the other side is an 'Eye of Cawles' mark in the center and the date the coin was issued in the Old Ajivhan system below it.

The coins are created in New Ajivha by specially chosen Harconin workers and they are issued only to Vatnahlifir and certain agents of the Khagan. All are compulsed by Khaganian law to accept them in trade (assuming said trade is reasonable) as it is effectively redeemable for an equal favour from the Khagan (if brought to New Ajivha) and those carrying them are to be treated as his direct servants. Outside of the Khaganate, the value varies based upon ones awareness of its worth.

In practical terms they are considered by Ajivhans to be worth approximately 100 Lira or 10,000 Kurus, and are only intended to be granted to others in emergencies by those they're issued to. Actually getting their worth in goods is only ever possible when redeemed with the Khagan, and in such cases the story of how they came to return to him is something that will be examined (as will be the coin) before it's accepted.

Ajivhan Lira - A golden coin marked with Old Ajivhan script and images as determined by chosen sheikhs (typically from New Ajivha and the lands of Onchesmos around it) responsible for its production on one side and on the other an ash tree mark and the date of its production in the New Ajivhan calendar system. Minted in New Ajivha and produced in series as decided by the Vazin, it's accepted primarily in Khaganian and Confederacy cities.

Ajivhan Kurus - A coin (made of an alloy usually resembling a mix of bronze and brass) marked with Old Ajivhan script and images as determined by chosen sheikhs responsible for its production on one side and on the other an ash tree mark and the date of its production in the New Ajivhan calendar system. Minted in New Ajivha and the lands directly around it of Onchesmos in series as decided by the Vazin, it's accepted primarily in Khaganian and Confederacy cities. Commonly valued as being worth 1/100th of a Lira.

(Insert name of the city producing it) Sultani - A golden coin marked with Khaganian script and images as determined by the Sultan responsible for it on one side and on the other a Star-Spiral mark and name of the city producing it. Minted in Khaganian cities as required by local Sultans, accepted as currency primarily in Khaganian and Confederacy cities. Commonly valued as being worth less than a Lira due to its origin being perceived as lesser, varying depending upon the perceived profitability of the city.

(Insert name of the city producing it) Akce - A coin (made of an alloy usually resembling a mix of bronze and brass) marked with Khaganian script and images as determined by the Sultan responsible for it on one side and on the other a Star-Spiral mark and the name of the city producing it. Minted in Khaganian cities as required by local Sultans, accepted as currency primarily in Khaganian and Confederacy cities. Commonly valued as being worth 1/100th of the corresponding Sultani.

(Insert name of the city producing it or the Khedive responsible for it) Altin - A golden coin marked with Khaganian script and images as determined by the Khedive responsible for it on one side and on the other a lightning bolt and both the name of the city producing it and the Khedive responsible for it. Minted in Khedive controlled cities as required by local Khedives, accepted as currency primarily in Khaganian cities and those trading with the Khedive. Commonly valued as being worth less than a Sultani due to its origin being perceived as lesser, varying depending upon the perceived profitability of the city.

(Insert name of the city producing it or the Khedive responsible for it) Para - A coin (made of an alloy usually resembling a mix of bronze and brass) marked with Khaganian script and images as determined by the Khedive responsible for it on one side and on the other a lightning bolt and the name of both the city producing it and the Khedive responsible for it. Minted in Khedive controlled cities as required by local Khedives, accepted as currency primarily in Khaganian cities and those trading with the Khedive. Commonly valued as being worth 1/100th of the corresponding Altin.

    The Empire of Aurora

The next five years passed almost in a blur. Shortly after the conclusion of the royal wedding ceremony, a new settlement was reached with the occupied lands in the Balaenic Archipelago. The former rebel territories were to be separated from the Kingdom of the Corpus Verde to create their own state within Aurora: the Confederated Tribes of Balaena. The islanders once again became self-governing, with the right to monitor their own borders and deny entry to any Fallen who might come near. There was still the odd murmur of discontent, but no more than any other border region of the newly reconstituted empire.

Xule itself prospered like never before, as not only the centre of the new empire, but also the capital of the Argent Confederacy. The Imperial family swelled in size as Nerissa gave birth to two sons, Marco and Nicolo, with only eighteen months separating them in age, while a trip to the temple in the south brought forth Paola, a daughter of Cyrica. Valencia for her part was content with Mariana, not to mention her all-but-adopted illegitimate nephew Benito. With the administration of the Kingdoms of Khalorean and the Corpus Verde constantly on her mind, she had little time to devote to more children.

In the wider Auroran world, technology reached new heights. Inspired by the feats of their ancestors, a research centre was founded in Kaigarde, Nova Aurora, in which a rudimentary space program was formed. There were still many challenges to overcome, but perhaps by exploring the final frontier, the newly reunited empire could finally solve the mystery of the falling stars.

Over the 5 years, Awn united the rest of the southern raptor states reforging the ancient confederacy into a proper kingdom. 2 major public works demonstrating the potential of Awnite magic were started: The Great Hedge Wall, which was grown to mark the border to the west, and the Terris Tree Bridge, which spans the river Goldberry. The fight against the Mind Wasps were not forgotten, but changed to a different battlefield: Information. The Awnite Educators, some called them missionaries, were sent to the nearby lands to warn keep the memory of Wasps intentions, actions, and methods, in an attempt to stem the flow of people who would go over to them.

    Lukari Confederation

Duntor and Beloit are sitting in a small room towards the middle of the 1st Home Tree. It's their standard meeting spot and the small room is comfortable and cozy more then any thimg else, many was the time they had ended up falling asleep at the table or one of the comfy chairs after a long series of meetings.

The pair were in the middle of arguing at the moment trying to determine what to do with their surplus. Duntor sighs and collapses onto a chair that groans under the large rugged Luggs enormous weight "Well what do you want to do with it then Beloit, if your so against just storing our surplus and wealth for a moment when we need it? Though if I hear one more thing about this expansion you want I might throw this damn table through the wall."

The tall slim Krakari lord rolls his eyes before pointing out on the map the same spot he'd been trying to argue with the Luug about for several hours."Look my point is that we have the ability, the means, and frankly the duty to our people to expand. We can bring our way of living to others, have you seen how happy our people are? Wouldn't you like to bring that to others?

The Krakari lord smiles at the Luug man but the Duntor just snorts at him. "Ya And I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact you want the power that comes with it.

The tall Lord smirks slightly and shrugs "Well I won't lie and say it won't be a factor but there can be multiple reasons behind doing something." The smirk drops from his face as he leans in to Duntor and points to the map again "Look Dun the fact of the matter is even if you want to ignore the outside it doesn't mean they'll be willing to ignore us. If we aren't going to expand and spread our capability and way of life to others then one of these other powerful nations could. He'll they could even take us into their fold and destroy what we have here for whatever they want.

The large Luugs face is inscrutable for a moment before he leans in and softly says"So what do you think we should do first then Bel?

    The Wild

The Pale Nymph bathed in her pool within the sacred vale of Drya's Grove--beneath the leaves and above the roots of Her Sacred Tree. In a still night and only lit by the pale glow of the moon her council slowly arrived to meet her: the Ancient un-runed Luug druid Uulug, the prismatically coloured Dust Moth Khk'hkh and various Grat Tree-Singers. Whilst the druids spoke the edge of the grove crawled as the senior couple of each of the Wild's wolf packs arrived and knelt ready to hear the council's decision.

That had been five years ago--the meeting had concluded that The Wild could no longer stand by and watch--and in that time great change had swept throughout the Grat Forests: lumbermen spoke of birds that watched them, rangers spoke of abnormally large wolf packs heading south and a local elderly lady with a large number of cats complained of Tiddles having gone missing.

    March 1189 (Turn 61, Spring)

"It is now the 1949th year of the world by the Auroran count, the 1189th year since the gods arose, and by my count the 862nd year since the first of the cataclysms. It has been fifteen years since I saw the beginning of anything resembling the civilizations of old returning to the world, and nine years since word of that thing started spreading..."

Years passed for the people of the world, and on the fifth spring dawned. Nature bloomed and the sun shone over the lands of man and beast, and as the days went on the reality of the world continued to sink in. Wonders and horrors in equal measure raked, settled, and dug into the land. Rains fell, winds blew, and waves crashed.

Word of the Yellow, long dormant, began to once again spread. As did words of miracles and saviours. As did again, stories of long drowned men washing ashore in the midst of Vayri. As did stories of Zalya wandering the borders of the ancient wastes of Ajivha.

    The world went on.

    The Ducal Palace, Xule

    "It's not fair."

Benito was getting to the age where he was starting to notice the world around him. Mariana didn't mind this, as it made him a much more interesting conversation partner, except that he kept asking the most obvious questions.

"What's not fair?" she asked, already anticipating what would come next.

"You get to be a queen, and Aunt Valencia gets to be a queen, and Uncle Cosimo gets to be an emperor and a king and a grand duke, and I'm just Benito. It's just not fair."

"That's just the way it is. When you're older, Uncle will probably make you a duke or something."

The two children were strolling through the palace gardens, enjoying the March sunshine while taking Zoli for a walk. It had been a long winter, and the giant bug was eager to stretch its legs.

"When did you become a queen?" Benito asked, wrinkling his nose.

"When I was six." Mariana only dimly remembered the day when the drider had elected her as queen. It was only as she had grown older that she had realised the true importance of that position. Even if most her father's race had disappeared into the void years ago.

"So maybe Uncle will make me a duke when I'm six?"

    "Maybe."

Mariana pulled Zoli's leash back to keep the bug from walking on the flower beds. The last thing she wanted was the gardener complaining to her mother again.

"What is a bastard?" Benito asked suddenly.

"It means your mama and papa weren't married," Mariana said in a tone of slight exasperation. Her mother Valencia didn't like to talk about it, but it wasn't as if she couldn't remember where Benito had come from. She had been six, almost seven, when the tiny baby had been brought to her mother's chambers. Now he had grown into a rambunctious little boy of five, with fish bowl brown eyes and dark woolly hair. She might have three other cousins, but none of them were anywhere near special to her as Benito. Despite his incessant questions.

"The cook's boy called me a bastard," the small boy continued, wiping his nose on his sleeve.

"He was just being mean," Mariana said quickly. They had never strictly forbidden it, but she instinctively knew that her mother and Uncle Cosimo would not appreciate her telling her small cousin about his true origins. Even though pretty much every servant and their dog knew the real story.

At that moment, Zoli leapt forward, tugging the lead out of Mariana's hands. The bug scuttled off into the undergrowth, leaving a trail of torn flowers after it.

"Zoli!" Mariana cried. She and Benito tore after it, heading deeper into the palace gardens. The giant bug disappeared from sight, and then she saw something.

"Wait," Mariana breathed. Ahead of them was her Uncle Cosimo, the Emperor of Aurora. He was sat on a bench, beside a man who she could only assume must be one of his ministers. She slowed to a halt, crouching low so neither adult would see her.

"Your Imperial Majesty, I have troubling tidings from the Confederated Tribes," the flustered-looking minister said. Mariana put her finger to her lips. Benito nodded obediently.

"Go on," Cosimo replied. In the bushes opposite, Mariana could see the faint outline of Zoli chewing something. Probably some prize tulip bulb. Fortunately, the two adults' attention seemed elsewhere.

"There have been reports of a dissident group arising in Balaena. At first we didn't think much of it, but then in the last month, there have been four attacks on Imperial soldiers. Three were fatal, but a fourth failed and our men were able to get out hands on one of them. We had to work him over a bit, but eventually he talked."

    "And?"

"He said the group is known as the Red Hand, and their leader is Lord Grimani. Unfortunately, he died of his injuries before we could get anything else out of him."

There was silence for a moment. Mariana recognised the name, but surely they couldn't mean who she thought they did? Grimani, the former regent who her mother had said had been executed before she was even born. Cosimo himself seemed stunned by the claim.

"That's... impossible!" he exclaimed. "Grimani is dead, I made sure of it." He paused. "It must be an imposter who has taken up his name."

Even from their hiding place, Mariana could see how shaken her uncle was.

"What is your command, my liege?"

"Send a special taskforce to Balaena. Get to the bottom of this, by any means necessary." Cosimo rose to his feet, and Mariana flattened herself against the ground. "I must speak with the oracle."

The emperor and his flustered minister quickly departed from the garden. Once they were out of sight, Mariana sprinted forwards and grabbed Zoli's leash with both hands.

"What was that about?" Benito asked as he caught up with her.

"I don't know," Mariana said, tying the giant bug's lead around her hand so it couldn't slip out of her grip again. "I really don't know."

    The Wild

The Harconin Protectorate... that was their southern neighbors. They didn't seem particularly threatening to their ideals compared to other nations of this age.
Their movement was growing ever larger: now three times as much of the forest paid tribute to the Nymph's order and the Wolf Pack had cut its teeth removing larger more stubborn predator packs from a forth region of the forests.

As they strive south a lone druid of the Grat was sent to speak to The Harconin Protectorate--it was said they also had Grat among their people--carrying a message:
"The Pale Nymph leads and The Wild follow. Tell us about yourselves and we shall share our own truth."

    April 1189 (Turn 62, Spring)

Word of the Yellow god and its Yellow spawn and worshipers spread and continued to spread across the lands, equal parts fear, and hate, and reverence of the mysterious deity. Known by little other than as the Yellow god, the beings heralds continued to wander the wilds as its dreams infected the minds of those on the edges. Its worshipers made their way through life and society, slowly but surely finding ways to tear at those around them and spread their sick mindset.

Time would tell how far this would go and how well others fought it.

    Halima, New Ajivha

Gears turned slowly in the complex mechanical artifice of the clock as the small hands of Halima forced their movement. Tiny rubies and thin wires were illuminated in her eyes as a small candle flickered nearby and tiny springs resisted her curious prodding.

So much had went into it over the past few years as her father carefully guided and instructed her, and so much was still to go as it ever grew in complexity. First, simple gears. Then springs, and rubies- chains, wires, quartz. Ancient vials of mercury, and acid.

Ever finer gears of silver, and more obscure designs of clockmaking tools and components were brought to her as she employed more and more features of clocks from older and older books pillaged from the ruins of the collective. Stacks of ancient engraved silver slabs resembling books dotted the workbenchess around the room.

Sleep- or the need for it ate away at her mechanical curiousity and need to innovate it some way as did the incessant botherations of Tahir wanting her to join him in his exploration of the city. The same could be said of Wilk- and Kara. They had far more interest in the fields and high towers of the city than they had of its libraries and forges. She wondered why, perhaps it was her father's-... grooming of her? That was what she thought it was with the amount of time he spent on her instructions. They were all taught by him, but he seemed to spend more time with her than he did her siblings. Teaching her of the world and what layed beyond it. Of his nature and of the machines of the past he was once patterned after in body.

He spoke of strange and terrible things, he said little of to others. Wonderous things. Horrifying things. Stories of the past, and of the future. All of it true. Or so he said.

She rubbed her small eyes and put her tools down, as she realized she was exhausted. Tomorrow would bring change. She felt it.

    The Ayin, Stonetide

"- and what can Ajivha offer that the others can't? The Aurorans have said the same and they claim to have magics..."

The Ayin shifted in his seat as the syndicate captain asked his question to the annoyance of the others, already assured of the deal before them. After a moment he replied simply with a hint of tiredness in his voice, "We sit on their border, our armies are the most experienced and armed on the continent, and we're not the Aurorans. We don't want a cut, all we want is your cooperation."

A captain opposite the first spoke up next, glaring at the first as he did so, "We're aware of what you can offer over the Aurorans already. And we're willing. Unless anyone wishes to dissent."

    No one raised their hands

"Well then," spoke the second. "We should begin the signing and send word that preparations are to begin. Correct?"

"Yes." The Ayin carefully removed the special pens, inks. waxes, and seals from the folds of his coat and placed them on the table before him, a long and carefully written treaty on the table before him.

The syndicate Krakari one by one took the pen, dipped it into the ink and signed a barely legible scrawl near the bottom. And then came his turn and so did the Ayin, a carefully practiced script of his title, and then with heated wax he placed his seal.

Wine was passed around afterward, Krakari having a tendency to alcoholism for a number of reasons and being stereotyped for it. Something they willingly indulged in.

They had joined the ever growing confederacy of nations, and the warrant of annexation was signed for the people of the raptor states. Soon would come the time where the exiles would reclaim their homeland and bring their banner upon the mainland for the first time since they came to be, their colony of poisoned exiles.

    North Coast, Xule

It was on the north coast of the island of Xule that the oracle could be found. A small wooden hut overlooking a grey pebbled beach belied the true power of its occupant. The elderly woman who resided there could have had any manor in Aurora, if she so desired. As it was, all she asked of Cosimo was a regular supply of fresh groceries, firewood and enough smoking herbs to knock out a horse.

The emperor took his seat opposite the seer. Perched on the table in front of them was a small red orb, in which Cosimo could make out faint clouds swirling. Anything more was strictly in the remit of the oracle.

    "You are troubled, my grace?"

It was an unorthodox method of address, but Cosimo was willing to overlook such niceties in this case.

"I am," he said, before adding, "Is it true? Is Lord Grimani still alive?"

The old woman looked down and stared for some time into the orb, to the point where Cosimo was about to restate the question, before she finally answered.

    "It appears so."

A childish dread threatened to overwhelm Cosimo, but he pushed it back. He was no longer a helpless seven-year-old, but the consecrated Emperor of Aurora. The closest thing on Earth to a living god. He could deal with Grimani, and the little band of malcontents the man was pulling the strings of.

"How did he survive his execution?" he asked hesitantly. "A whole crowd saw him die." The old woman tilted her head.

"Deception, it seems. Not all allies are as true as they might appear."

"So there is a threat from within?" Cosimo spoke in barely a whisper. The oracle nodded and drew in close.

"When it comes, the blade will be held by one who is close to your heart." The old woman grinned toothily. "But you need not fear. While the seas still surround Xule, as your powers surround you, no man will be able to spill even a drop of your blood!"

    The Ghost Marshes

Three gnarled men sat around the burning fire of an ancient oil drum fillied with pilfered wood and coke as the buzzing of cicadas filled the air. Atleast they hoped they were cicadas, the ancient strain of Aurora beetles once domesticated by the collective were still thick in the marshes feeding off of the remnant magics across the ruins.

The armies could only do so much, eventually being pushed out or simply being too loud to loot the remains of their ancient home. Too much rotting magic permeated the land, drawing in horrors from across the seas. Something not conductive to finding the real archives and stashes. Stomping around in the hundreds gave one time to look but drew far too much attention in the long run.

So, here they were. One group of many stalking their way through the ruins, looking for something that would get their names remembered and their pockets filled.

    Malik, Xule

Malik had grown into an old man as the years passed, already older than his kindred back in the city when he had been tasked to the island of Xule. His silver hair greyed and the scales on his flesh gradually became more obvious, and seemed to become more numerous across his flesh.

Rose increasingly comforted his weary mind as the days went on and he relied on her and her connections to both the slaves of the city and those he had freed to keep order over the trading company that had grown to some prominence through his work.

Less rocks were thrown through the windows, though those that were were still as hard to follow as they had been those years ago. Diplomats came through the doors in some frequency as did court functionaries looking to gain some favour in the khaganate or to procure certain services. Eyes as they always were were everywhere.

Today he was to deliver to the second senate, the Delphic being handled by another, the word of the day. The Silverplume confederates were to join the greater confederacy of the Argent. The papers would take time to reach them, but a vote was to be held in the mean time. A pointless- almost ritual. No one he knew of would vote against it.

Soon would come the verdict on war. Or laws governing it. A silly idea.

    Terra, Isle of Balaena

Even in May, Balaena was bitterly cold. Valencia felt a pang of longing when she thought of her warm island of Xule, not to mention her two children waiting for her there. But she was the Queen of the East, anointed monarch of both the Kingdom of Khalorean and the Kingdom of the Corpus Verde, and answerable only to her brother in Xule, and so she was determined to carry out her duties. In a couple of months time, she could enjoy a much deserved break in Lyseria.

The tour had just come from the Vampire Observatory, where a ceremony had been held to officially declare sovereignty over the tiny enclave that existed in the centre of the territory. A purely symbolic act, and a fairly pointless one in Valencia's eyes, since no mortal dared to cross over the boundary that separated vampire from man. At least, no one who expected to walk out again. But Cosimo had considered it important for some reason, and so she had included the stop on her trip.

Now, she found herself opposite the High Chieftain of the Confederated Tribes of Balaena. An elderly man with a welcoming smile and a Xulian-style robe, he could almost be a lesser noble of her home island. At least he could have been, if it wasn't for the bone in his wispy beard.

"It is very good to see you, your Majesty," the old man said, his Balaenic accent unmistakable, "and you, ancient one," he added, addressing Badger. The bodyguard grunted in reply. Valencia somehow had a feeling that he didn't really appreciate the attention, but the stories of his exploits had spread far and wide. Even in the frozen north, the old Auroran tales of Badger and Daigoro were still commonly told, and to now see the man himself in the flesh was taken as a sign from the gods that the empire was destined for greatness again.

"Thank you," Valencia said smoothly. "I trust the training of the Guardians of the North has been going well?"

"Oh, it has," the high chieftain agreed. "Two score legions of men, ready to fight and die without question. Now, let me show you..."

Valencia continued to listen with half an ear, but found herself distracted by Badger. The giant man had risen to his feet, and was patrolling the perimeter of the room they were sitting in. To most people, the expression on his face would be unreadable, but having spent the last five years with him as her protector, she knew when something was up.

"Sorry, excuse me," she said quickly to the high chieftain as Badger suddenly took a step back. "Is anything the matter?" she asked.

    "Get down!"

Valencia fell to her knees, covering her head as a dart flew just inches above her exposed neck. She rolled over, just in time to see the high chieftain hit in the chest by a similar projectile. Badger snarled and threw himself through the open door. Valencia crawled over on her hands and knees to the old man.

"Are you all right?" she asked, her usual royal formalities temporarily forgotten. The chieftain gave her a grimace.

"It's a nasty one, but I've had worse."

Valencia peeled back his robes to reveal a bloody wound. She flinched. A couple of his ribs were broken at the very least. Perhaps worse. The dart was buried deep into the man - she had a feeling that removing it would not be a good idea. Besides, she was not a trained doctor.

"How is he?" Badger asked. Valencia hadn't heard him come in. She shrugged, the realisation of how close to death she had just come only just washing over her. Several tribesmen burst through the door, and Valencia stumbled back onto her feet and stepped out of their way as they rushed to attend their injured chief.

"He got away," Badger murmured. "The assassin, that is. Like he disappeared into thin air. Haven't seen anything like that for a long time."

"The Red Hand?" Valencia asked in a low voice. Despite herself, she found herself looking at their hosts in a new light. Who knew which one could be the next to come at her with a knife in hand?"

"Who else?" Badger spat on the ground. "Thin wiry man. Masked face. Almost certainly a local. Couldn't say much else about him.

"Cosimo isn't going to like this," Valencia said, shaking her head.

    The Wild

And there had been no response: disconcerting.

The wolves spread and the beasts of the land were brought under the rule of the Druid's of the Wild by bark or bite. The expansion was not broad and omnidirectional like most nations might but instead with a specific purpose: The Wild was building a ring fence, a set of trenches, a highway of resistance and the number of beasts and predators flocking to the Nymph's call was ever increasing.

    Journal of Awn
    1189/6/2
I have heard word from the college guard that someone was cut down a few paces from the front door of the school. As if this were not distressing enough, the assassin seemed to have blades for hands. I wonder if it is possible that the mind wasps have warped their followers in such a way.

    1189/6/4
It seems the man that murdered so near to home was one of the priests of the Rising Light. He was supposed to be trapped with the others. We must see if the rest of the priesthood can be saved. I will have to dispatch Valen. She is not going to like this, especially with an assassin so near, but she is trusted by the peoples of the Runeforge. Marcus is properly trained and attuned now, she will have to accept.

    1189/6/8
Lord Noventa has sent word that the Khaganians have offered a new explosive for "Mining Operations". That is promising, we were never meant to fight below the ground, hopefully we can find and seal the majority of the tunnels.

    1189/6/14
The argent confederacy is to hold their convention soon. I wanted to send Valen, and perhaps attend myself, but I think it will have to be Admiral Fredrick, and Lord Noventa. I will make sure Renewer Kaush goes with them. He is the best with the refined interference pattern, in case it is needed.

    1189/6/22
I have heard from Ranger Azrath that the yellow murmers in the east have disappeared, and been replaced with shades. I will dispatch Renewer Kuabara to investigate.

Default Update: June 1189 (Turn 64, Summer)

    June 1189 (Turn 64, Summer)

Word of drowned men began to spread again, old and dragged in by the tides and vayri, they appeared in the wake of storms on the various beaches and shores across the continent. Almost always ancient seeming they spoke of broken blades and wandered in full view of the mortals who found them back into the waves seeking some kind of final rest or so it seemed. Little was known of them and when discovered seemed to inspire some kind of primal fear that few could place, beyond children who seemed to feel pity for them. The young were the majority of the few who tried to speak with the ancients, and heard their words of broken blades and monsters below the waters.

    A curiosity.

    The Ducal Palace, Xule

Cosimo's hands shook as he read the letter from Valencia. She had relayed news of the assassination attempt in formal, unemotive language, but that hardly softened the blow. The Red Hand had tried to kill Valencia. His only sister. The girl and later woman who had practically raised him after the untimely deaths of their parents. He would not stand for this. He could not stand for this.

‘What is your wish, your Majesty?’ the minister behind him asked timidly.

‘Find the Red Hand and everyone associated with them,’ Cosimo said after a pause. His hand tightened around the letter. ‘Those who give them aid. Shelter. Anything. Show them no mercy.’

    ~

    International Summit, Lyseria

Representatives from the nations gathered on the island of Lyseria. Human, halfling, krakari, luug, and many others sat the same table as equals, ready to discuss the issue of the day. Lord Darius Freeman, viceroy of Nova Aurora, was to lead the proceedings.

‘Thank you for coming,’ he said, rising to his feet to address the representatives. ‘Having lived through the first and second Brujah war, I have seen with my own eyes the suffering conflict can bring. Therefore today, I bring a proposal to regulate future wars, whenever they may arise.’

He brought out a piece of parchment.

‘The protection of non-combatants, particularly that of women and children, is a priority. So too is the fair treatment of prisoners of war. We propose a treaty that would mandate minimum standards for nations to adhere to during wartime. This treaty, the Lyserian Convention of the Laws of War, would be backed by an international court based here in Lyseria, administered by the impartial Order of Lyseria. One judge for each participatory nation would sit on the court, and then a head priest of the order would also sit, if a tie-breaker was needed.’

‘I have a question,’ a female krakari with braided feathers asked. ‘What of nations who refuse to sign the treaty?’

‘These standards would only apply in situations where both nations have signed and ratified the treaty,’ Lord Darius said, ‘in order that the restraint of civilised nations is not taken advantage of.’ He sat down again. ‘Now, we welcome your thoughts on these proposals.’

    The Wild

As the armies of wolves had swept across the forest ever expanding and ever pushing they slowed. It had been an explosion and some creatures had died in expanding their Leaders ideals to those that dwelled within the forests of the North West. As each day the boundaries of their control expanded the Druid Council became a few among the many and The Pale Nymph realized she was not entirely representative of their home any longer--new thoughts and believes needed to be represented and she told her people to go and find those that had them and were willing to voice them.

They brought back druids, wise creatures and animals that ran packs, hives or herds--all of them had valuable knowledge to share. Similarly a procession was sent to their neighbor and the Pale Nymphs closest advisor, the Prismatic Moth, was sent to represent their nations best interests and come to an agreement with them as to how they can continue to co-exist peacefully.

    Malik, Lyseria

Reactions were mixed among the Ajivhan and Khaganian representatives to the various proposed laws of war. As they were amongst those of the Harconin, Silverplume, and Basalt.

The Khaganians for the part questioned the meanings of various distinctions and in turn slight alterations were proposed to the definitions of various words used in the treaty and the wording surrounding them. No pattern was apparent to their suggestions and in turn demands, they seemed more interested in finding and patching possible loopholes when asked for explanation. Being experts at taking advantage of such problems in their own system of law this would make sense.

Of course there were other more pressing matters on their part. The desire was strong to supplant the Lyserian judge with that of an Ajivhan Justiciar with their role in the confederacy being head of matters of war and internal security. There was also the apparent desire to classify wild mages and their ilk as weapons of war rather than as people when it came to matters of war and any such laws surrounding them, in their mind despite the strides made for them by the Khagan to be seen as inherent risks on the battlefield with no way to ensure that one could ever be disarmed on the battlefield.

And in that line of thought there was discussion on the place of spirits aberrant or otherwise, most from Ajivha thought their use at all on the battlefield criminal. Unholy. A painful and torturous end as sustenance for an abomination, giving no thought to the corpus at the place of the table.

The treatment of POWs, as well as the treatment of revenants also came up in the discussions. It was seemed unreasonable for the non-Ajivhan Khaganians to spend more effort on them than they did their own people. The Ajivhans themselves seemed to have no issue with the thought of caring for survivors, deserters, and surrendering forces.

The Harconin seemed to have little issue with the proposed laws and regulations, though opinions varied and some supported the suggestions of the Khaganians.
