    Dust bunnies, not real ones.

Post Re: Cursed, of Course: A Fantasy Comic

And so the party starts as it means to go on, even if they hadn't meant to do that.
Once again, shoreward has provided us with a fluid, detailed piece of artistic storytelling.
Excellent as usual, Shoreward, and I'm loving where the story is heading!
Finally, a present-time Action Scene! I mean, "Somehow I don't think they agree." ! Priceless! (Poor guy, that thief.)
I do apologize for not posting as of late, I'm afraid life had caught up to me, even mid-summer.
Kantuki, you bring to mind a certain quote, regarding your response and my disagreements to it.
"And yet, I find it oddly comforting", but I digress.
    Strip 141, by the way.
Now, then. I believe I have a promise to make good on. Specifically, why I started reading this comic.
Well, let's see. I've just always enjoyed the idea of a not-unholy skeleton hero.
Most people don't tend to agree, I know, but still. I was one in Skyrim, I wrote my winning novelette for Creative Writing class based on one, and I had to play one as an introduction to Pathfinder.
    And then, there's this comic.
I know my thanking you is repetitive, Shoreward, but I don't know how else to relate to you that I enjoy this comic as much as I do because I'm finally seeing something I'd only dreamed of until now.
And there it is, the return of the cringe. Ah, well.
So thank you again, shoreward. And thank you to everyone else who took the time to read this.
Both the comic, and this post. I hope you have a nice day!

From what Pellan said, it seems like Cat is one of the weaker ranks... but even considering her considerable skill at using her powers, that electric touch looks nasty. First-rankers must be on the power level of your typical fantasy mage.

    Yeeowch.

So that... actually still doesn't really clear up what being touched by the Storm means, but it does give a much better reason of why it's treated with such respect than just "neon-blue is cool." (Neon-blue is cool, mind you).

Looks like there's more to our Stormlady than spaceyness.

Haven't had time to make comics this week, so here's one from my buffer. Hopefully business will die down in the coming weeks.

To all you budding comic writers out there, this is why I'd consider having 5 to 10 comics prepared in advance for bad weeks to be a baseline. Don't want to get caught off guard because you had one bad week and need to play catch up. That kind of thing piles up fast.

I know artist types, though. Time management is always the bane of we novices. Beat it up and take its lunch money.

Wow, brand-new to the comic and already I'm catching new strips within hours of uploading!

I really appreciate the way you're doing your world-building. It seems like we're only learning about things as they come up for the characters in the world, but we're also not being totally left in the dark. That's a balance that even some of the most respected writers in SF can struggle with, so major kudos to you.

Part of me has always wanted to indulge in a classic Epic Fantasy coming-of-age Hero's Journey with heaping dumps of world exposition, since it's what I grew up on, but I'm older these days. That kind of thing was fun back then, but it's one of the places where the growing pains of the fantasy genre really show. It doesn't tend to hold up in these days of better examples.

Still, it would make things a lot easier.

That's it, ladies and gentlemen! I'm rebooting this as a story about a farmboy! We'll begin with three prologues and a diagram of a family tree. Also, elves.

    On second thought, maybe not.

I think it's also a matter of medium - it's a lot more tolerable in a novel than in a weekly-updates webcomic (or other form of serial). This is actually something that's been bugging me as a would-be writer (though not of stereotypical fantasy) myself.

Preferably a vague, omnious one which you can twist the wording into all sorts of eldritch quad-dimensionally geometrical pretzels so the Very Bad ThingTM doesn't actually happen like everyone thought it would.

Also, why am I seeing so many skeletons with glowing eyes today? Maybe it's because of that Undertale fanfic I'm re-reading?

Oh, definitely. Exposition dumps are far less palatable in a visual medium where you can actually show at least some of what's being talked about.

Even in a story, though, you really ought to filter exposition through character and action. Get people invested in the story and the character, and they'll be more inclined care about the world they inhabit, especially when the character and the world are causing conflict with one another. You can get away with an extra paragraph here or there if it's relevant, though.

It seems pellan rolled a natural 20 on his intimidation check.
I suppose blue flaming eyes must be at least a +2.
His charisma, however, probably hands him a -1.
A wonderful comic, as usual, shoreward, and I'm glad to see that you had a contingency!
And from what I can tell, an especially detailed contingency,
considering the details such as the tent's lamp, or our mute hunter's battle-axe.
I will, as usual, enjoy what strips we have, and await the next strip when you can. Thank you for creating this story, Shoreward, we all enjoy it.
Cringe-esq, yet again. Maybe I should look into getting a Remove Curse.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope you have a nice day!
{{EDIT}} You're right about us having barely scratched the surface. I can't wait to see what else we all can come up with!

What the - is that magic? I guess minor magic isn't that uncommon here? And how does that fire monster know Pellan's name?

He killed one of these things in the very first comic, remember? I'd assume either they're like D&D summons (...sometimes) and 'killing' them just banishes them back to a fire plane or something, or this one's acquainted with the one Pellan killed in some way. Hence the title.

Edit: And yeah, now that I look back, she stole this thing when the bandits captured Pellan, back in comic 26. So it's the same monster - throwing the gem into the fire must resurrect it or something.

Check this game out! Or at least give it a thumbs up.
Why "because the plot said so" is not a good answer.

    Oh yeah. That makes sense.
