Wow, thank you so much for including everybody! >w<

Hi guys c: Excited about this game!

Nelsi will speak in sky blue. (4ca4f7)
Her eventual familiar, whose name she does not know yet (Arklos the Raven), will eventually speak in dark crimson. (a50303)

By the way Carp, how did you feel about Nelsi maybe multiclassing into Witch later on?

    Spoiler: Copied From Recruitment
    Show
Nelsi is an Unchained Rogue who will soon be multiclassing into Witch.

    Spoiler: Portrait
    Show

This portrait of Nelissa was done a year ago, just before the annual Longnight ball at Whitethrone Palace. She was quite delighted when Queen Elvanna gave her permission to attend, having thought that she would be expected to work during the event. The icing on top - the queen gifted her with a beautiful gown to wear to the party.

Nelissa is armed and dangerous, but keeps it as subtle as she can - weapons that she doesn't anticipate using are stowed away, and armor is well-hidden under clothes. She has the white hair of the Jadwiga, but her features are softer than those of her kin, which was perceived as further evidence by her birth mother than she was incapable of magic and unfit to be called her daughter.

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Lady Nelissa Elvanna was born to Princess Cassisoche Elvanna and her Prince Consort. Her early childhood was quite different from that of other aristocratic children, for despite her pale hair and snow-white skin that clearly marked her as one of the Jadwiga, she seemed to lack any signs of the white winter magic that the Jadwiga were so infamous for. Her parents couldn't make her commit to lessons on utilizing magic if she had none to begin with. And so, while Nelissa experienced the same strict standard education that her cousins likely did, less was expected of her, making for a slightly freer childhood. But with those lower expectations came the disfavor of her mother. By the age of 12, Nelissa still showed no signs of magic, and she was starting to be a bit of an embarrassment to the princess. Frustrated with her apparent lack of ability, the princess promptly disowned the useless child.

As Nelissa stood on the doorstep to the Whitethrone Palace’s exit, in tears from her mother’s harsh demands that she leave immediately, a figure appeared on the grand staircase. It was none other than Queen Elvanna herself. Gently chiding Princess Cassisoche’s cruelty and reminding her of the importance that “familial ties” had in their government, she moved to comfort her distraught granddaughter. What happened next shocked everyone who witnessed it: Queen Elvanna offered for Nelissa to come live with her. The princess was furious, but Queen Elvanna would have none of it, and insisted that the offer was genuine. Overcome with gratitude at the unexpected gesture from the queen, Nelissa tearfully accepted, and moved out of the princess’s wing of the palace into the queen’s domain. While the act continues to be perceived to this day by the granddaughter in question as a truly kind, generous one, Queen Elvanna saw potential in this seemingly charitable act. She could definitely think of possible benefits from a girl with nowhere else to go, ties to the royal family, and hopefully, an undying loyalty to her if she simply took her in.

And indeed, the act worked perfectly. Within a week, Nelissa came to Queen Elvanna, lamenting how she couldn’t do anything in return for the queen’s kindness. Queen Elvanna told her, “The others might deem me a heretic for saying this, but… you don’t need magic to be of value, my dear.” The queen introduced Nelissa to the head of her small group of spies, Mierul Ardelain. Under Mierul’s tutelage, Nelissa learned how to wield swords and daggers, as well as other ways of espionage that would make her useful to the queen. Nelissa may not have been Queen Elvanna’s most capable spy (that title would probably be taken by the Three Riders), but she was certainly one of the most trusted. That trust was very much mutual. When Nelissa turned 15, she celebrated her ascent into adulthood with a pledge to Queen Elvanna – she would always remain loyal to her queen, and never do her harm.

Three years went by, with Nelissa becoming better and better. She had become a real credit to Queen Elvanna, who knew that she could always trust Nelissa to obey her. Nelissa went on various missions across Irrisen in service to her queen, ranging anywhere from mere observation to infiltration to even assassination, when Queen Elvanna deemed it necessary.

That was why it was all the more unfortunate when the time came for them to part.

But that’s not exactly right – Queen Elvanna cast Nelissa away from her side. The queen had plans, grand plans, in the making, to overthrow Baba Yaga. While the plans were still in the developmental stage, Nelissa accidentally caught the barest of glimpses of them one day. While what she saw was not nearly enough for her to make the connection to an all-out uprising against Baba Yaga, Queen Elvanna realized that in letting Nelissa grow so close to her, the girl had grown too close – and now needed to be cut away. The next day, Queen Elvanna delivered Nelissa’s dismissal to a shocked, heartbroken young woman.

This would not have been so bad by itself, but Princess Cassisoche had never forgotten how Nelissa was an instrument for much humiliation on her part. And now, Nelissa no longer had Queen Elvanna’s protection. Chased by the princess’s guards, Nelissa was forced to leave Whitethrone and flee south to Hoarwood, where Duchess Anelisha Elvanna reigned. Nelissa had done the duchess a favor a year back by uncovering a minor conspiracy, and so Duchess Anelisha offered her asylum on the condition that Nelissa use her talents for the duchess’s benefit.

Nelissa agreed, and has been in service to Duchess Anelisha Elvanna for the past couple of months. She hasn't been given any specific tasks (yet), and so she merely patrols the city and surrounding forests with the intention of reporting anything suspicious back to the duchess.

Operating under the pseudonym "Nelsi" (one she has commonly used), she stays in Hoarwood, having lost her purpose in life and with no specific directions from the duchess. And so, this night finds her at a small tavern in the city, with only a half-pint of ale for company.

    Spoiler: Personality
    Show
Due to her early childhood, Nelissa is very used to having structure in her day. This is enforced even more when she begins working for Queen Elvanna. Her parents' lessened degree of supervision when it came to Nelissa (due to her lack of magic) meant that she was not as carefully examined as she might have otherwise been, and freer and happier because of it. Thus, she bears many similarities to the other Jadwiga - appreciation for the type of regiment that persists in Irrisen, a need for self-improvement to stay ahead of any who would wish her harm, acceptance that she must work with the various creatures that inhabit Irrisen (or make them work with you), rather than against - but she lacks their streak of cruelty.

Although she has spent much of her life in service to sinister monarchs, Nelissa is actually a kind soul. She served Queen Elvanna out of gratitude and with the belief that the queen truly had her – and everyone’s – best interests at heart. She carried out whatever orders the queen gave her (though Queen Elvanna was also careful not to give her jobs that were too grotesque, knowing that to do so could shake the valuable loyalty Nelissa had), under the understanding that they were for the good of the nation. That is why she is so hurt by her essential banishment, though she still considers the vow she made entirely valid – she continues to look out for her queen, even from afar.

Although outsiders would consider Irrisen's various policies manipulative and evil, Nelissa sees them as the status quo - one that she is just too used to, and thus one she has never even thought about questioning. This is partly due to the fact that much of Irrisen's citizens behave the same way, and largely due to her time at the palace. She sought to emulate the kindness that the queen showed her when she took her in, but she also accepts the way things are with almost no internal conflict, except for the most cruel aspects of this status quo. Thus, while she tries to be kind, this kindness acts within these limits. Queen Elvanna would have her believe that everything, even the most cruel laws, fit into the complicated task of running a nation. So while she might feel the tiniest twinge of sympathy for the child sacrificed during the Baptism of Ice, overall she understands that it is an important custom and something that holds Irrisen together. And you don't just go breaking custom.

In truth, though, Nelissa feels a bit lost lately. Her life, her everything, was for Queen Elvanna - and now that's gone. She even paid worship to the deities that the Queen expected her to, even though it took some twisting of those deities' philosophies. She's caught between fervently wishing to return to the queen's side, and wondering if she should dare try to find something else to live for.

Nelissa is a very careful person, as her profession called for great caution and preparedness. She's a very focused individual when she has a task to put her efforts into, as she would often adopt a single-minded attitude when given an "important" job (every job was important) from the queen. She also tries to be helpful to others when she can (i.e. when being helpful doesn't conflict with the queen's orders).

    Spoiler: On the Locket
    Show

Nelissa still carries around the locket that Queen Elvanna gave to her the day Nelissa was accepted into her service. It is made of white gold, and lightly encrusted with precious gemstones. Previously, it carried an Attentive Mirror inside it, so that she could communicate with the queen. Since her dismissal, the mirror has been extracted and it is merely a very nicely-made, unmagical locket.

    Spoiler: Multiclass?
    Show
Considering her background, it is entirely possible that Nelsi is a very late bloomer concerning magic. She may multiclass into Witch later on (probably Witch, NOT Winter Witch. There's a reason her magic hasn't happened yet, and it's because she's just different from the other aristocratic Winter Witches. I would explain this as: All of the familiars offered to her showed allegiance to the Jadwiga for their winter magic, but she is not a Winter Witch, none of them took an interest in her. Her family would have offered familiars approved by them, which means they were likely similar in personality to her mother and father, hence the rejection. Any attempts to exert the authoritative commands that her kin are well-known for failed, leading her mother to believe that she was truly incapable. And she never showed natural aptitude for it, but the right familiar could bring that out), should the situation allow it. No higher than 4 levels of Witch. Rather than focus on debuffing, she will probably take some hexes that buff the party.

Taking the Deception Patron (due to Baba Yaga's deception regarding the ultimate fate of her daughters) for that 4th level Invisibility.

Preferred Familiar - Raven for speech (which would make learning spells from it easier fluff-wise). I could picture a Raven who thinks very highly of himself eyeing her asking, "Now, a little thing like you, born into the Jadwiga, unable to cast a single spell? This must be one of the most ridiculous things I've laid eyes on yet." and taking an interest in her for being an oddity. Fluffwise, I'd propose that he met Nelissa a couple of years ago while she was working in some city outside of Whitethrone. He took notice of her then, but didn't pay her any mind other than a once-over due to her connections to the Jadwiga. However, it turns out that the raven was previously human, and who was turned into a raven due to minor acts that were perceived as treason. After Nelissa has been ejected from the palace and their paths cross again, he takes a renewed interest in her since she's no longer connected to the Jadwiga in that way. While he's not spiteful (I'd picture him as True Neutral, accepting his fate and with enough curiosity to take notice of Nelissa), he decides that he'd love to get one over on the Winter Witches by taking in this challenge and raising her to be able to perform magic after all. His different perspective on the Winter Witches of Irrisen would also be an opportunity for Nelissa to grow outside of the bubble she's been in, perhaps realizing that trying to exert total control isn't always the best possible method.

*Would need Arcane Armor Proficiency Feat

    Planned Hexes: Flight, Ward, Fortune

Planned Stored Spells: Cantrips, Mage Armor, Obscuring Mist, Enlarge Person, Unseen Servant, Mount, Charm Person, Cure Moderate Wounds, Web, Ironskin, Glitterdust

    Patron Spells: 2 - Ventriloquism 4 - Invisibility

Despite her strong ties to Irrisen, my plans are for Nelsi to eventually become content with traveling, realizing that there is nothing left for her in Irrisen and that the queen is not going to change her mind. So she should be fine going wherever the campaign takes the party. Given her history of being cast away twice - first by her mother, and then by Queen Elvanna - I think she would be loath to abandon any companions she got attached to, not wanting them to feel as she did.

I picture her story being one of self-discovery. Her life, for the past 6 years, has revolved around Queen Elvanna. She's worshiped as the queen has told her to worship, carried out her orders with hardly any complaint, and taken comfort in knowing that the queen cared about her. And suddenly, that simultaneously "caring" and overbearing presence is gone as the queen has cut her loose. She doesn't know what life without Queen Elvanna means... yet. But she'll hopefully find the answer on her journey.

    Spoiler: Foreshadowing
    Show

As the entrance to Yensa came into view, Nelsi dismounted. They had been riding hard for several hours now, and with the town in sight, the horse could finally take a well-deserved break. Gathering the reins in her hand, she led the horse down the path to the small border town.

She briefly recounted the circumstances in which she found herself in a town so far from Whitethrone. Queen Elvanna usually liked to keep her nearby to tend to matters closer to home, but Countess Marcelyna had recently reported issues with a band of ruffians. The countess, wanting nothing to threaten the trade agreements between Irrisen and neighboring Hagreach, requested that Queen Elvanna send aid to stifle the conflicts quickly. Nelsi was a little worried that the countess would find her less than adequate, but she reminded herself that sometimes, numbers weren’t always everything. A lone operative could move more subtly to root out the troublemakers, finding them faster and paving the way for the “numbers” that the countess likely already had to finish the job.

Besides, she had never been as far as Yensa before, and the queen had expressed that Nelsi should learn more about the inhabitants of Irrisen, both near and far. That was certainly something that Nelsi could do something about, with this trip. And the queen had, as always, funded her travels to be expedient and comfortable. Hence why she was here with this lovely mare.

“Well, don’t you look like you’ve traveled a long way.” Lost in her thoughts, Nelsi’s completely startled by the voice she hears. Wh-What? Turning to try and locate the speaker, she was quite puzzled as it seemed no one else was around.

    “Up here, lass.”

Looking up, she finally located another living creature – it appeared to be a raven, perched on the gate to the town. As she did this, he let out a sound that seemed oddly similar to a whistle, and said, “How strange. With that hair, you could almost pass for one of the Jadwiga. But a noble wouldn’t just be riding on horseback into a small town like this, all by her lonesome. Besides, you haven’t really got the Jadwiga ‘look.’ The hair’s there, but the face looks… mild.”

Who does this creature think he is? Having heard enough comments (from her own family, particularly) about how she’d never fit in with the other Jadwiga, Nelsi shot the feathered smart mouth the nastiest look she could muster.

“Ohh, now she’s trying to look mean.”

“As a matter of fact, I am one of the Jadwiga,” she declared, trying to channel the sense of authority that Queen Elvanna seemed to effortlessly ooze. “Hold your tongue, bird, before I cut it out.” She unsheathed her short sword, its slender, curved steel shining in the clouded light, letting the implication hang there silently.

But if anything, having heard this, the raven bore a look that almost seemed more disrespectful. “Ohh. My mistake, my lady, he returned with a just a hint of a sneer. “Gods forbid I stand in the way of someone so mighty. Well, I’ll just leave you be, I suppose. Good day.” Though Nelsi would was slightly tempted to shoot the raven down as he unfolded his wings and took off, he was gone before she would have even been able to bring out her bow.

Forget it, it’s not worth the effort. Or the time. You have a job to do, don’t allow yourself to be distracted. You’ll need to present a good first impression to the countess. Reassuring herself, she continued toward the town.

Hooray. c: Sent you a PM on my thoughts so far, it's a little long and I don't wanna spam the OOC with my stuff >.<

So... if anyone wants to intersect backstories, Nelsi has been all over Irrisen, usually around the cities/towns but occasionally in the wilderness as well. I'm not seeing any cases where she would have known any of the other PCs well, but I do see plenty of opportunities of simply making their acquaintance, albeit briefly.

Morortok wouldn't have been in Irrisen for long. However long it take to get from the border to Hoardwood. Maybe in passing for Nelsi, but I doubt they'd do more than exchange a few pleasantries on the road.

Checking in. Alastair will speak in Red. Rook does not speak :)

I have done some reading on Irrisen, but I don't really get a feel for it. With that I would rather have Alastair start from outside and be a new visitor. He is very loyal and will always aid his group, so if anyone has a good cause he is there.

Ow, that leaves me with little to no time. Okay, I'll throw in a 10-minute for now, with perhaps later expansions in whatever forms you deem necessary.
    Okay, so Cori:

    Step 1: Concept bulletpoints
    • Cori spent his early days in the Plane of shadow in a Fetchling community serving the great dragon Riantassala
    • He was sold (or lent) to the rulers of Feyfrost. As befitting of a dragon, no explanation was given.
    • The council of Chillblight used him as a expendable soldier, sending him in depth of the Winterwall glacier, where only his natural resistance saved him
    • A month ago, Cori was exiled from Feyfrost by the personal order of Prince Mauxpaudi. Again, no reasons or explanation. He arrived to Hoarwood, sustaining himself through odd jobs. He doesn't really know, what to do with his sudden freedom.
    • Cori is still naive, knowing a little on how to live in the wold without orders.

    Step 2: Goals.
Character goal: He's got a whole new world to explore and he's definitely going to grab the opportunity. But for now, he'll be fine with not having to think about daily needs.
Player's goal: Okay, I have never played a naive wide-eyed character. I'd love to see, how it'll be.
    Step 3: Secrets
Known secret: Nah, Cori is not the type to keep skeletons in his closet.
Unknown secret: Exiling Cori was actually one of the saner desicions of Prince Mauxpaudi. One word. Divinations.
    Step 4: Npcs
    • Riantassala, the "great" (actual greatness may vary) umbral dragon of his homeland. As Cori was raised in the community of her servants, he was drilled to obey the beast. Will he get over it? Will he unfold the reason behind his transfer to prime material plane? (Hostile)
    • Velaina, elf ranger in service of Feyfrost council - Cori's frequent companion on the assignments. The little, he knows about Golarion, he knows from her.
    • Asmund, the tavern keeper in Hoarwood. He is generally nice to Cori, points him at the odd jobs available and buys the game, hunted by young fetchling for a decent price.

    Step 5: Memories:
    • Colors. Yeah, sure, mostly white anyway, but really, colors. Prime has colors.
    • Fire at the glacier. Mostly needed to keep companions from freezing. Primes are squishy, and although Cori couldn't put the same amount of veneration into the burning wood as them, he still treats it with respect.
    • People. Cori will never forget his first day in Hoarwood. People everywhere and it's so noisy.

Open to discussing the idea. I am currently looking for a stronger connection if one can be established first.

One connection I can possibly see is that Nelsi and Alistair are somewhat nobility.

o: Indeed. Where is Alistair from, though? If he has interacted with the Irrisen nobility at some point in time, it's entirely possible Nelsi could have been there.

I am fuzzy on that part. I have not been able to wrap my head around Irrisen culture yet. He is from the lowest level of nobility, a minor landless knight.

I feel you, I've been trying to get as best an understanding of Irrisen as I can from the wiki, but it's not the same as having the actual book.

Irrisen does interact with its neighboring nations, though. The Land of the Linnorm Kings seems, at least from what I've read, that it would fit with Alastair's background - no central government, smaller kingdoms united by heritage. Perhaps Irrisen and one of those smaller kingdoms (whichever one you like best?) were trying to negotiate a peace treaty or something? The two hold no love for each other, but I could picture both of them at least making an effort before their long rivalry gets in the way.

Alternatively, maybe you could be one of those rare travelers from somewhere in Varisia?

    All suggestions, of course.

EDIT: Ooh, that could also tie nicely into his goal with winning Peoni's hand. "I'm gonna go and make an impression on those cold-hearted Irrisen folk. If I can accomplish something as difficult as starting to mend the poor relations we have with them, that would surely impress." Or something like that.

EDIT 2: Alternatively, if you meant that you were trying to wrap your head around Irrisen's culture to make your character fit in coming from Irrisen: The nobility is made up of people all related to Baba Yaga, otherwise referred to as the Jadwiga. Some have lesser degrees of relations than others. The generation closest to Baba Yaga, her daughters, are brought in individually in 100-year cycles to rule over Irrisen. The children of those daughters, or Baba Yaga's granddaughters, are put into power when their mother ascends to the throne. They rule over each of the provinces of Irrisen for 100 years alongside their mother, after which they disappear alongside her into wherever Baba Yaga takes them when she inserts a new ruler.

So, for example, Nelsi is the great-granddaughter of Baba Yaga, and one of the Jadwiga. She would normally be put into a nice nobility status, and the only reason she wasn't was because she showed no aptitude for magic. The great-grandchildren are allowed to remain in Irrisen even after the current ruler is displaced, though they are usually relegated downward to less prestigious positions to make way for the people that new ruler is bringing in.

Maybe Alastair is a many-times great grandson of Baba Yaga, and his family was thus given a smaller piece of land generations ago to live comfortably on? It would also put him farther away from the main courts of the provinces, which are all (I think) ruled by Evil-aligned beings. The country as a whole is Evil-aligned, and the aristocracy especially so, so that might otherwise conflict with what sounds like a very Good character. From the huge political upheaval that happens every 100 years, it seems like the incoming monarch would want to completely displace the previous one, so I'm not actually sure how much power the remaining descendants hold onto. I'm also not sure on how the farther-removed generations' status is. So take this with a grain of salt. D:

I have winter clothing, right there on my sheet. I'd assume Morortok is already wearing it.

Once Carp confirms that's the only entrance/exit we can see, Nelsi will say just that lol. She's trying to know whether or not the kobolds will try escaping some other way to get away from the party.

Well there is probably only 1 main entrance, there is certainly more than 1 (hidden) exit. Kobold warrens are a maze of tunnels and traps. If the kobolds can't navigate it without setting off their own traps, then they'd be dead already. Of course, the safe paths and entrances are only accessible to Kobolds (or Ratfolk...)
