Default [PTU] Those that sleep in the shadows

The town of Maltese Cross has seen better days

What had once been a thriving town and farming community sat on the borders of the Great Eldwoods to the cold north of Albion is now a bleak, burnt shell of its former grandeur. Walking the packed dirt road, it's hard to miss the wilting crops and the blighted fields, the scarcity of workers and the rows of hastily dug graves, and the lingering smell of smoke mingled with the slight copper taste of blood

Coming to the town walls - the gatehouse clearly showing signs of wear and damage, and the stones of the wall itself blackened and burnt in places – a couple of dour looking militia members, one with a bandaged head and the other with their arm in a sling, stop the wagon bringing you in, checking everyone's papers and credentials, casting a distrustful eye over all of you, before ushering you out of the carriage and into the town, with a few spoken directions to the Lord's manor

Within the walls, the air of bleakness and sorrow is stronger still. The skeletons of burnt down houses dominate one side of the town, with few of what would have been charming white wood houses still untouched, and the few people on the streets all walk with their eyes cast down to the ground. A saurday market had been erected by the few spirited members of the community left, but the wares on offer are meagre, and dark clouds hangs in the sky, strangling out the daylight

On a set of hastily erected gallows hang a few withered black robed corpses, a mark of the town's retaliation, but compared to the damage to the town – and the rumours of the same befalling many more settlements on the borders of the Eldwood – it feels small, hopeless, and that is what can be seen most in the eyes of the villagers.

It has been over a week since the attack, and while the town was beginning to recover, the scars of damage remain

Drawn by calls for aid or the recruitment posters distributed through the area, or just survivors of a similar circumstance, a small gathering of mercenaries and soldiers mill around outside the Manor house. While damaged during the attack as well, its clear where most of the reconstruction is focused, with only some scaffold and a couple of missing window panes to show the damage. At the door is another millita member, a young girl with brown hair in what looks to be armour two sizes too big, looking out nervously at the gathered crowd. A few rows of old oak trees and tall yews surround the house, as well as a well maintained garden, though one that looks to have been replanted recently, and you can make out a few labourers working past the house, likely on a back garden or the like.

A rough wood sign has been stuck into the ground before the house, instructing the gathered 'heroes and warriors' to wait here to be seen by the lord for his interview and briefing, along side a number of wanted poster bearing drawn depictions of several prominent members of the CUlt, or at least those believed to be. No mention is made of the previously mentioned reward, though lots of flowery words about duty and honour and selflesness. What's most noticeable, however, is scrawled over the whole sign in red paint; 'This Dastard's to Blame'

Gathered near the manor house, besides the six of you, stands a tall man in a set of battered but serviceable armour and a large axe, a man and a woman in boiled leathers and crossbows chatting with each other, a girl in vibrant robes bearing the insignia of the mages college elite, and a second robed person of indeterminate gender beneath the layers of cloth, hanging back beneath the trees with a small but spry murkrow on their shoulder.

and the sky above opens up in a gentle rain, bathing the town and the open square in a pitter patter as you wait.

The journey to Maltese Cross had been, in a word, miserable. She'd been without any sort of padded seat, precious little food, and the carriage driver was by far the most boring person she'd ever had the misfortune to share a six day ride with. Somehow she managed to amuse herself by tricking the driver with Garnet's illusions, but there was only so many times a single person could see a coin on the side of the road only to have it disappear when he stopped before he began to ignore the illusions.

She was dumped unceremoniously at the town of Maltese Cross, which made even her own first home of sticks and blankets look like a luxury. Not doing too well are we Maltese Cross? she asked herself as she walked through the streets. It was sort of depressing really. Not only was this town cursed with being some insignificant country estate, but it had also had the misfortune to be burned to the ground.

Zafira preferred large cities: it was easier to blend in there. She didn't particularly want to be here, but there was that pesky matter of the White Tower to consider, so she gritted her teeth and bared it. She just had to make it through one or two dreadful missions before she'd hopefully find her way back to civilization.

Garnet walked beside her as she wound her way through the messy streets. He picked up his feet delicately, deliberately avoiding the patches of mud that would sully his coat. She'd brushed him this morning, and the Pokemon was always preening and grooming himself to look his best.

As they approached the manor, Zafira returned Garnet: no use in showing one of her trump cards too quickly. As she looked at the manor house, which reminded her of one that she'd stolen a certain second-century vase from in a different fief, she began to feel irritated at this particular noble lord. Did he not see how his people were suffering? All too often, Zafira thought to herself, these nobles have no desire to help others. They just hoard their wealth for themselves. Certainly the nobles in Aerith City hadn't given a Ratata's ass about the begger children in the streets, so she was always rather harsh when assessing those of 'higher blood'.

Zafira's opinion of the man dropped when she learned that she was supposed to wait outside, in the rain, with a bunch of random people, for an indeterminate amount of time. She had half a mind to break into the place (and even started sizing it up), but figured that was probably against the rules of her parole. While she wasn't any sort of Robin Hood figure, she did have a rule to not steal from people who were barely scraping by. She knew what it was like to be hungry. Nobles like this guy however, were fair game: especially if they were muking horrible people. But alas she couldn't, so instead she cast a careful eye over the crowd. Her gaze lingered ever so slightly on the Murkrow guy, a Witch Hunter? The girl with the Pokemon-sword was strange as well ... did she look kind of pale to him? If nothing else, she made sure her sword would easily be able to slide out of its sheath if she needed it.

But instead of breaking in or trying to make small talk, she just crossed her arms and waited ... and waited ... and resisted the urge to tie someone's bootlaces in knots with her mind ... and waited a little bit more.

With the rain pattering down from above, most of the mercenaries were trying to keep dry which, truth be told, was a rather reasonable line of thought. For Toru though? It was the closest thing he'd had to a shower since he'd left Ashinghaven, and he was making the most of it. Furlong wasn't as much of a fan, with his small leaf switching back and forth to try to keep water out of his eyes, to little avail. The hunter was absentmindedly running his hands through his hair, trying to remove some small amount of the dirt and grime.

The town had been a bit of a shock for Toru. While he'd heard of the decimation in the area, he hadn't expected it to rival Ashinghaven's. After all, Maltese Cross was an actual city. They had a militia, guards. They weren't a few dozen hunters making a living for themselves in the woods. Every time Toru saw the burnt husk of a house the still-healing wound on his head would twinge, reminding him of what the Black Beast had done. The damage was unmistakable, and the markings impossible. If he wasn't wrong, he'd even spotted a few tracks that matched the creature. If there was anywhere he was going to start his hunt, it would be here.

Upon finally reaching the manor, Toru sneers. People were dead or dying and most didn't have a roof over their head to shield them from the rain, and this man was fine. He was like the wealthier merchants from the good times, tricking the hapless villagers into overpaying for useless trinkets. Then again, Toru thinks, clutching his necklace close. This is just another of those useless trinkets.

Toru slowly pulls his bow from his pack, making sure that the Deerling-hide sheath was still keeping it dry before looking over the others. A shifty-eyed woman who didn't seem all that useful in a fight, a literal mountain of a man, two armored people who looked like the knights he'd heard of in stories and a man that seemed unnaturally dry despite the rain. A motley crew, to say the least. Toru was tempted to ask the man and women with crossbows about their weapons (they'd always been of interest to him) but, for now, Toru contents himself with pulling an arrow from his pack, idly twirling it around his fingers like a baton.

Furlong, on the other hand, isn't so content to wait patiently. The Nuzleaf begins to wave his arms idly, causing small breezes to fly into the nearby puddles, subtly splashing the others waiting.

John hopped out of the carriage and was just... blown away by the sheer devastation and suffering he was seeing in the town. He had heard of the problems that the town was going through a few towns over, he had been travelling around in the hopes of finding some work and ways to offer his help when low and behold Maltese Cross had popped up. He had eagerly made his way to Maltese Cross to offer his services to the town lord but hadn't expected this. He had assumed it was the town lord being angry at some slightly out of hand group of some sort but this was too much, why was there not more people here to help! Where were the Counts knights or soldiers. John releases Tungsten onto the muddy ground and he warbles happily at being released but I shake my head, I wasn't in the mood to be cheered up and Tungsten starts to pick up on that vibe as he looks around.

John just sets his jaw and hefts his armor as starts to walk speedily to the manor. His jaw just tightens and tightens as he see the various sights around the village until it seems that his teeth were going to shatter. He finds the manor with the sign out front and sees some various other people out front, who he assumes are waiting just like him, and joins the group. As the young man waits he tries to distract himself by grabbing an old cloth out of his pack and wiping down Tungsten who lets out little rumbles of happiness, he always did prefer a clean shell but everything is still in the back of his mind a bit 'I will work for this man even if I have to sell my services for free.'

Sandra and Threnody glide over the ground, not high enough to keep out of the rain, but several feet above most other people's heads. She surveys the devastation below her and mutters, "Hell's bells...What in the name of Arceus could have happened here?"

Once Sandra approaches the manor, she glides down and lands in front, remaining mounted as she rests her Honedge on her shoulder and surveys the assembled militia, looking curiously at her soon-to-be comrades, attempting to get a feel for the various heroes.

Geoffrey quickly glances around, the flames sparking around him getting brighter and more abundant as he takes in the devastation. He turns to Sandra, "Well, apparently it was 'This Dastard', if that's of any help."

His glancing becomes more and more frantic, and he sends out Quil, his quilava, and mutters to him to be on his guard.

Mack was a bit put off that they wouldn't let him ride his Rhyhorn into town; he was fully capable after all. Regardless, he did understand the need to follow their procedures, so he had squeezed into seats not designed for someone of his size. He frowned at the destruction as he arrived and disembarked. It wasn't exactly a good first impression for his first trip here, and he'd wished he had figured out what was going to happen here a bit sooner. Still, even if he had he was just one man. Now was the time to see about making himself useful following up officially for once.

He stood out in front the manor with the others, pulling his giant traveler's cloak around him to keep the rain off. He sized up the others around him and saw the seal of the mages guild. He remarked how he'd never had any contact with them regarding some of the magic he'd learned from the druids. Judging by how they had gone into hiding, they might not like unregistered magic users around here. Now would not be the best time to bring that up, Mack thought. His were more subtle than others' so he felt confident he could keep it hidden for a bit, until he got to know people here first. The manor itself was a bit pompus and reminded him of his days serving lords like these. They could use a good dosage of respect, that's for sure.

He decided to chime in when he hears the others talking, "I'm sure they'll tell us soon. What's more important is why. Are you all volunteers here or is there anyone official around with some information for us?" The rain didn't bother him, so he didn't care if they were waiting long. He expected that kind of rudeness anyways. In fact, his foot felt a bit damp as the leafy pokemon splashed at him. With a warm smile, Mack looks at the creature and stomps his on foot in a puddle, muddying his boot and creating a rather large splash in retaliation.

It was the little things that kept him in good spirits.

Toru's head snaps up at Furlong's muttered snarls as he tries to shake the water off of him, a rare smile creeping onto the boys face. The hunter finishes his idle twirling and returns the arrow to its quiver, looking to the giant of a man.

"Just a volunteer," he replies as a morbid thought crosses his mind. "And I suppose representative of Ashinghaven, but only by process of elimination." It certainly wasn't a comforting thought, but it could give him some degree of legitimacy with the Lord. "No clue why we're out here though. Maybe he wants the rain to wash the stink off us for a bit," he jokes bitterly, looking up to the sky.

Furlong was currently doing his best to steer the rain towards Mack, although he was having little success at the moment. Quick bursts of wind were easy, but a controlled push? That was a bit trickier, and the Nuzleaf gave up any semblance of subtlety to attempt it. He began waving his arms frantically back and forth to try to push the air, bobbing up and down ridiculously as he does so.

Well if you came for the money, you're probably out of luck, Zafira responded happily, attempting to keep a positive attitude despite the rain. Considering the words 'reward' have been replaced by 'honor and prestige' and how much he enjoys trying to make that pathetic manor look impressive, I seriously doubt you'll be getting anything significant out of him. Of course, there were plenty of places to make money in Albion, but coming to destroyed towns wasn't likely to top the list.

Not the most intelligent group they've got assembled, Zafira thought, conveniently forgetting her own lack of any formal education other than a single ancient book she'd sold off before she'd actually read any of it.

But look on the bright side, she said, like our lovely friend with a bow, quiver, and Nuzleaf intent on soaking us all mentioned, we're at least getting a free bath out of the wait. Although your sword's probably going to rust if you leave it out darling. You'll also notice none of us have our weapons in hand. Considering there's no immediate threat, would you mind finding a place where it couldn't behead someone with one accidental turn? I'm a bit on the cautious side for a mercenary I know, but what can you do?

"Just a volunteer as well, like yourselves." John grunts as he corrals the little Aron from joining in the splashing fight and getting all muddy. He finishes the wipe down and stands up.

"Well maybe to some honor and prestige are the reward. Money is nice but those are far more rewarding." John shrugs and then crouches back down to keep polishing the Aron.

Toru gives at a sharp whistle at Zafira's words, ordering Furlong to stop messing around. The Nuzleaf stop his frantic gyrating, instead sullenly leaning against Toru's leg.

The hunter's eyes do go wide as two of their number say they wish to do this for pride. Risking their lives when it wasn't personal? Why not just fight in a tourney or something? This hardly seemed the most direct option.

"Now that she mentioned it, what's up with your sword?" Toru asks, taking a few steps closer to Sandra to inspect it. "I've never seen a weapon quite like it before." Toru does leave out the fact that he could count the number of swords he'd seen up close on one hand, but that was a minor detail.

Sandra look at the weapon at Zafira's words, then laughs and says, in response to the thief and hunter, "Ah, see, that's where you're right. This is no normal weapon." She closes her eyes, and as she does so the blade opens two eyes on it's hilt, looks around, and grins, giggling, "Hon-Honedge!" then closes it's eyes again as Sandra opens hers, saying, "It is my companion, just like yours."

Mack smirked at the exchanges between those gathered here. So you all know as much as I do about this job as I do. Whatever your reasons, I think any one of you are doing a great service coming here today. It's not just anyone who would take the security of the outer regions into their own hands. I'm eager to see you in action. I already see many of you have some formidable looking pokemon! He really was impressed by the variety of pokemon his would-be allies had brought with them. Well trained too, it seemed. His own where rather large so he kept them recalled. His competitive side considered how much fun it might be to train or spar with such opponents, but he pushed it aside. Now was not the time, perhaps after the lord of the manor appeared.

After a few minutes beneath the rain that felt almost a week due to the bleak atmosphere of the ransacked town, the front doors to the manse slowly opened as the young militia member stepped aside to make way for an older butler to bring out a wooden pedestal, then step aside himself to make way for the lord himself.
Dressed in crumpled finery in red and blue that looked to have seen hard wear recently, Baron Whitewood's pudgy jowls show signs of sag and clear black bags are around his eyes. He moved not with the pompous air that most conuntry nobles did, but tired, exhausted, and a close look at his hands revealed a number of recent cuts and bruises. At his waist, he wears a sword uncomfortably, like he's not used to it. Stopping behind the pedestal, Whitewood casts a nervous glance over you all and the other few gathered mercenaries, his frown deepening as he muttered something to himself you can't catch with the distance, before clearing his throat
“Ladies and Gentlemen, heroes one and all, Maltese Cross thanks you from the depths of all our hearts for responding to the call, unlike some self-declared 'knights'. As you can see from our once-humble abode... This so called cult of... You know what, I'm too tired for this. Let's cut this crap, and talk straight for once."
“Whether your here for duty or the reward – and yes, that is still on the table, everything we can scrape together – the fact is over a week ago those grimer-sucking scumbags who call themselves the 'priests of night' or some such drivel took us by surprise. They sacked our homes, they killed many of us, and... and they took my daughter and many more young women, and ran off into the woods. We have a clue where there hiding, but as you can clearly see”
he stopped, gesturing to the town and the young militiawoman who had been standing guard “we haven't got a Vanillite's chance in hell of getting them back ourselves.”
“So that's where you come in. I don't really give a damn who you are or what you did before, so long as you can help. So long as you... you can tell me what happened to my little girl, just put my mind at rest. I don't expect good news, but anything and you'll get whatever you want from my coffers, whatever aid I can give, anything."
"Right, that's all I have to say. Best of luck to you, and if your hungry or need a drink before throwing your life away, you can share what food we have left at the towns inn. Just tell them you're our 'heroes'. Any questions?”
he finished finally, his eyes locked on the deeply robed stranger waiting beneath the bows of the oak trees.

Zafira had to resist snorting. Must be nice to know that no matter what kind of situation you get into your daddy can finance a rescue operation, she thought to herself. You'd think a woman would value being able to defend herself, but apparently not. Whatever, I'll just rescue the idiots, get my paycheck, and collect my next job.

She turned and began walking away from the Duke. Let's grab some grub then, she said. No use going to work on an empty stomach.

John eyes the noble critically, he had great respect for the hierarchy of nobility that held this land together but his true respect and loyalty went out to the nobles and leaders who pushed themselves in the field of battle and joined their men. The the awkward way this man wore his sword and his pudgyness showed that he was clearly no fighting man, though his frankness was refreshing and definitely proved he was a cut above the normal country nobles in the area.

None of that meant he wouldn't try his hardest to the return his daughter to him though. Hefting his gear he heads out to the inn as well since he didn't have any questions and he didn't want to make a promise he may be forced to break 'I'll just have to try my hardest to return those girls and his daughter. It's all any of us can really do.'

Maybe they would have some travel rations to bring as well.

Toru listens intently, although he does his best to not stare at the Baron. He hadn't expected the man to look like he was in pain; maybe he'd actually suffered alongside his people. Still, no matter how much the Baron had suffered, his people had suffered far more. He didn't deserve that much pity.

"You have anything else for us to work off of?" Toru asks, knowing that finding them in the woods would be like finding a needle in a very, very large haystack. "A direction? A map? Anything?" Toru asks, adjusting his bow on his back. The more help he got now, the sooner he could find them. There was a very faint glimmer of hope in Toru's voice as well; after all, if they were taking people from here, maybe some of the people from his village were there.

Mack listened stoically as the soft little man plead his case. It was terrible that the cult had dragged off some prisoners with them as well as ransacking the place. They were getting bold and there was not enough of the king's finest out here to protect these people.

"Hrmph," Mack grunted in affirmation."I'll get to the bottom of this. Just point me in the right direction and I'll be on my way...after a good meal and other preparations. Surely we can organize ourselves rather than everyone going on a wild pidgey chase."

“We have some hunches. There are a number of former bandit strongholds in the eldwood we never got round to clearing out, and we just took as good fortune when the petty raids and thievry stopped, but more than that, I'd swear to the three hounds I can name where they are; when they attacked my house, when they took my little Elise, they grabbed something else; Three gold disks recovered from an old shrine in the woods, dedicated to a pokemon we didn't recognize. Some kind of bird, but every expert we had look at them said the disks predated the current kingdom, that they held some kind of magic or some such. I kept them as a curiosity, but the bastards grabbed them too, but they left everything else valuable. If I where to make a bet, their holed up near that shrine. It's too much of a coincidence otherwise.” The baron paused for a second, looking thoughtful.
“Hans, the local archivist, was injured during the attack; he's resting at the temple to Celebi, in the north of the village. Hopefully, some of his records survived – some maps of the eldwoods, or at least something about the Eldwoods to give you a heads up. If not, there there was an old dirt trail leading to it north northeast of town, but it's been years since we last went there, so I cannot say if it's still serviceable. If you need weapons, then the smithy was left standing, and since his daughter, Sarah Woodrue, was one of those taken, he should be happy to lend a hand. They can probably help more than this popus old fool. Good luck, and don't throw your lives away – we've had enough damn tragedies around here recently” The Lord finished bitterly, turning around to head back into his house. The butler cast one last glance over you all and the other mercenaries, with a deep frown like he was looking at something unpleasant, before following. The large oak doors closed behind them with a click

“Well, That's enough for us. By the end of the day, we shall return with these so called scourges – prepare that reward and your praise” said one of the two leather clad hunters, a man with dark hair, in a confident tone. Gesturing towards the walls, the other huntress and the girl in the mages academy robes headed off with him, with the latter mutting a couple of words and the rain seeming to twist around them, raindrops hitting the ground but none the trio themselves “You can all just relax. Find a nice cozy seat in the inn and put your feet up We won't be needing the help of ameatures”

“A bit full of themselves, aren't they? Alas, I'll just have to look forward to the look on their faces when I swoop in and take the glory” laughed the armoured man as the trio left, before bowling low and graciously to the ladies gathered and then the lord of the town “Seigsmund, Knight Larion of the order of the silver horn. A pleasure to meet you all, and know that this quest is accepted. On my honour as a knight, it will be done. Now, what was that about grabbing some grub? The pretty lady is right, no use trying to smite heretics on an empty stomach!”

looking around, it seems that some time during the lords speech that the cloaked individual with the murkrow had slipped away somewhere, without ever having uttered a word.
"This aint no game, Time to make history, yeah"

Zafira's ears perked up at the words 'gold discs'. Perhaps there was an opportunity for her to make a profit after all. If these discs were already missing, then it would be easy for them to have been misplaced carelessly into her care. Of course, it might be a risk so quickly after getting out of jail and with so many watchful eyes, but perhaps there would be a chance for her to sneak away.

Well, let's get some food and talk strategy over dinner, Zafira said as she walked to the in. My name is Zafira by the way. Nice to meet you mister Lairon. Obviously I'm not a Knight or a noble, so you'll forgive my poor table manners.

When she arrived at the inn she walked up to the barkeeper, shirt unbottoned jusssst little, leaned over the counter, and said in her sultriest voice. We were told that heroines like me and the rest of these ladies would be fed dinner before the rescue operation. You the man to see?

Obviously if it was a woman barkeep, Zafira does the same thing, pronoun change excepted of course.

Toru listens intently, wondering to himself if any men were taken. So far at least, it seemed only women had been taken from the village. The hunter certainly hoped that was not the case; after all, the more variety of people that were taken, the better the chance that his family wasn't dead.

Don't think about it, Toru reprimands himself, shaking his head. The archer makes his way to the inn with the others. His eyes go wide and he blushes profusely at Zafira's attempt to seduce the barkeep, turning to Geoffrey.

"So, uh, what's with the little fires?" he asks, pointing towards the boys' hair with a tone of sincere interest.

John listens with half an ear, temples and mapping were not his forte as much as he tried to learn. There had been no time growing up between helping out his parents and the lack of available teachers for him. Then with Arcos he had had a different education, physical mostly with emphasis on his magic and how to lead. He mentally shrugs 'I'm sure someone will have those skills, it will work out and we'll find those scum.'

He lets the hunters remarks slide off him, despite just the slightest irritation at being called an amateur, that wasn't why he was here. He was here to help. He was prepared to make his way to the inn when he heard the armored man introduce himself. 'A Knight of the Silver Horn! Here!' John quickly turns around and introduces himself "Hail Seigsmund. I'm John Renning, I'm looking forward to working with you on this mission. I heard you say you were a Knight Lairon of the Silver Horn and I was wondering if you had heard of a retired knight of your order Arcos Thorne? He mentored me and I've heard all sorts of stories from his knight days."

Mack shook his head at the group that left. The last thing they needed was a bunch of groups competing for this job. They were likely as not to get themselves hurt or worse in their haste, and there's telling what they might do if they don't get their 'prize' first. Regardless, Mack was going to be well fed.

"You think that's really necessary, young lady?" Mack says as he lumbers down next to Zafira. "We already have the Baron's blessing and I'm sure any seasoned bartender would be used this kind of act by now." He smiles down warmly as he teases her. "I'm glad to see the most sensible of us have decided to take the offer of food before trying to trudge around in the rain. Speaking of manners, the name's Mack."

Zafira, she responded to Mack. And would you really deny a girl her fun? Shey eyed the big man up, but figured that attempts to talk circles around him would likely fail. His eyes weren't the kind to be lead astray by a young woman like her.

So she narrowed her eyes and switched her approach. Look Mack, she said, her voice going from sultry to sarcastic in the blink of an eye. For women in this world, unless you're noble born you're treated worse than dirt. And if you are noble born, more often than not you're dressed up as a porcelain doll. Would you really deny a common born girl like me the opportunity to use the one trait that society has put any sort of value on?
