Show us your hometown
Inspired by the traveling advice thread, I decided to start this thread, where you can show off your hometown and share traveling advice.
I'll start with Hamburg, Pearl of the North.
Spoiler
This is a part of the port by night, featuring the Queen Mary 2 on one of her visits.
This is an aerial picture of the port, with some of the nicer (mean: richer) neighbourhoods in the foreground)
This is the the Binnenalster, an artificial lake in the centre of the inner city, complete with the Jungfernstieg, a main boulevard, in the background. You can also see the tower of the townhall and the blue goals, an art installation during the Football World Championships last year.
This is the townhall by night and fully illuminated. It's home the the Lord Mayor and the Senate, the governing body of the city state of Hamburg.
Universität Hamburg
This is the entrance to the old main building and center of the campus of Hamburg University.
A "Fleet"
One of the many "Fleet" (network of small canals, which run through the city) and the reason why we're called Northern Venice. You can also see the old "Speicherstadt", warehouses they used mainly for coffee and spicestorage before they started to use containers. Part of the traditional port.
Hafencity
This is a conceptual drawing of the Hafencity, a new quartier with apartments and office builidings, which they are right now building.
Elbphilarmonie
This is also under construction, the new concert hall for philharmonics. A huge building on top of a traditional warehouse.
Eppendorf
This is Eppendorf, a middle class neighbourhood, again with a "Fleet". My grand-mother happens to live there, but today it's mostly young professionals (hipsters).
Außenalster
This is an aerial picture of the Außenalster, a large lake right in the middle of Hamburg.
Thalia Theater
This is the Thalia Theather, my favourite theatre in Hamburg. One of the best theatres in Germany, our other top theatre being the Schauspielhaus.
I hope you've got an impression of what Hamburg looks like. The most beautiful city in Germany, but that's just my opinion

Re: Show us your hometown
Uh... I have several.
In chronological order:
Bordertown
This is the most interesting thing there, and the only thing I remember. I was born there, only stayed for 3 days (mum was basically the only doctor in our town, and she could hardly midwifer herself).
Travelling tips: Stop for lunch at the kangaroos, then move on right out of there.
Kaniva
This is approximately its entirety. The town logo is a windmill. It's set in the wheatbelt between the Big Desert and the Little Desert, and I've talked to people who have driven the highway from Nhill to Bordertown - which runs straight through it, as can be seen in the picture - and never even noticed it. Pop ~ 900
Travelling tips: It has a caravan park, but you probably won't notice it. Beware of the itchy-bomb trees at the swimming pool.
Armidale
Biggest town I've ever lived in (5 digits!). Gorgeous churches, very pretty especially for about a week in autumn, lots of cafes, and a new shopping centre being built for some reason (the other one was only just expanded ). University town. Heaps of schools. Cold in winter.
Travelling tips: The restraunts and cafes are great. Come visit me in the town library on Saturdays. Oh, and we have 3 spare beds (4 if you include Erin's spare).
Valley Heights/Springwood
This was approximately the view from my house. Lower slopes of the Blue Mountains, surrounded by bush. Very pretty, but very small.
There's probably better towns just as pretty in the viscinity.
Tallangatta
The entirety of the town is in this shot. You can even see my school, down in the left-hand corner. Very small, quite pretty. Has a caravan park and, on the rare occasion there's water in it, you can go skiing on the weir (when there's no water, the mud's grand). Pop ~1000
Travelling tips: you might like to try to check when there's water. Good walk on the far side of the lookout, and when I left there was a bed-and-breakfast near it that made great cakes.
Armidale again
Just thought I'd throw in this shot - the livestock market after a massive hail storm.

Re: Show us your hometown
City of Eugene, Oregon, United States of America; Awesome Place
See here for the area.
SpoilerOne of the more urbanised areas, still lots of green:
A nice view of...I think it's the University of Oregon. Been awhile since I was in that area.
The kind of area surrounding the south, west and east sides of Eugene.
The city at dusk:
The local bus station:
See the bricks? That's all over downtown. Most of the sidewalks are brick. Try finding that in many American cities, HAH!

Re: Show us your hometown
Some of us don't live in a 'hometown' y'know
I'm up in the boonies, on the very borders of my town of Dahlonega. Its a pretty cool place though. Home of the very first American gold rush and one of the big reasons the Cherokee were pushed out onto the Trail of Tears (I'm related to those who hid out however and didn't go).
Most of the buildings here are at least a hundred years old.
However... can't seem to find a pic of the bloody place.
Heres the college though and surrounding area:
Some personal pics of mine in the off-beaten trails of Dahlonega...

Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. My house is in the crosshairs, so I guess I should expect an ion cannon strike anytime now.

true
and from what you said earlier they were even made by your forefathers...
you may need to add a few "fore"s in though
we really don't need to go into one-up manship here. i just like pointing out to people (americans mostly) that 200 years isn't even a grain of cosmic sand in the hourglass of the whole planet.

Re: Show us your hometown
Well, my house originated around the mid-1800s, so within a decade or two of Armidale being founded. That's about as old as you can get around here... well, without looking at those aboriginal artifacts on the hill. >sigh< I wanna go to Europe, where the really old things are

Re: Show us your hometown
Well, here's my hometown, Jasło
Not big, not impressive, but I like it. Here are some images:
Spoiler
Coat of arms.
The overwiev of the town.
Front of eldest church here.
Ignacy Łukasiewicz, guy who was inventor of the first method of distilling kerosene from seep oil, who worked in this region, and set up first industrial oil refinery in Ulaszowice, now the part of Jasło.
Some photos of our town park:

Re: Show us your hometown
Right now, I live in Brompton, an awful place. Generally, literacy goes down as you move north in England, but Medway is a long way south and boasts some of the lowest literacy rates in the country.
You may think the rest of the country has trouble with chavs, but only because you have never been down Chatham high-street. They lope around in packs, marked by their 12" gold-plated clown necklaces, track-suits and BMX bikes that they either had since they were 7 or else they recently stole from a 7 year-old.
Hundreds of benefit-scroungers, teenage mothers, juvenile delinquents and drunks.I played: Arin of the Silver Tongue, Barri Poari

Re: Show us your hometown
Hey, we also have the...uh...well there's the...no, that's not interesting at all...um, certainly there has to be something interesting in Atlanta...
We have sprawl, lots and lots of suburban sprawl, and I guess that's about it with the exception of a couple of marginally architecturally interesting buildings. Oh, and the world's largest aquarium.
Spoiler
But yeah, not much of interest in Atlanta, unfortunately. Sometimes I regret having moved back here after college, but my friends and my family are here, and that was reason enough. That and I wouldn't have managed to support myself financially had I decided to move back to Oxford. Now that's an interesting town.A Story of Love, Jealousy, & Twenty-Sided Dice
