What setting are you in? A couple of them treat Drow very differently than others.

Also, don't be drizzt. Just, don't.

So what you do is you take two scimitars, and you be a two-weapon-fighting ranger with them, see? Maybe throw some fighter levels on there. You're also gonna need a magic panther. But the most important thing is that you be a tragic romantic misunderstood exile who opposes the senseless evil of your people. Once all those elements are in place, you've got yourself a drow.

A Drow? So dwells in the Orkney and Shetland islands off the mainland of Scotland, primarily lives underground, but ventures out at night to kidnap musicians, and "Drow" is sometimes spelled "Trow"

If you share traits associated with other Elf-kin you probably fear iron and church bells,.so leather, wood, and bronze armor and weapons only. You may also steal cattle and unbabtized human babies, and to retain your freedom, you.have to send a tithe in the blood of a fellow Elf or a human lover to Hell every seven years.

And you enjoy hunting mortals, but you fall in love with mortal poets.

Or.... you live in the underground city of Erelhei-Cinlu, which was made from the first letters of the names of E."Gary" Gygax's first five children (Ernie, Elise, Heidi, Cindy, and Luke), and you are a weak fighter but a strong magic-user.

    Nice one.

As for the original question, what is the appeal for playing a drow over a different race? What is your picture of the character?

Knowing the general idea of the character would help a lot.

I think that playing an Underdark-raised Drow would be similar to playing a (rightly) paranoid member of the Mob. What matters most is how much power/influence you can eke out for yourself while quietly eliminating your enemies, or friends, or superiors.

If you watch Star Trek, the Romulans are what I often associate with Drow.

Depending on how your Drow was raised, you could be just like anyone else, but you know you're going to be viewed with at least some suspicion if not outright fear. Compare... well, racism in general.

On the surface, how you treat others will determine just how well you'll get along in public.

This is a good way of viewing it, though you might throw in a bit of superiority complex... as a drow, you are better than others. That superiority complex might be a weakness, in that you underestimate others who are not drow.

Romulans are too Lawful to be similar to Drow.

Romulans generally believe in the importance of the Empire and in sacrifice -even self-sacrifice- to maintain it. They're the kind that'd kill thousands or fight a losing battle to the death even if they disagree with this course of action, because it is their duty and pride to do so.

Drow, meanwhile? They're individualistic. They're bullies and sadists for which the only reasons they're not hurting you right now is that they have to plan carefully and make sure to avoid disrupting the plans a bigger, tougher, sadistic bully might have concerning you, because they don't want to be targeted by those.

If you want a vision of the Drow society, imagine the boots of two Drow stomping on each other's groins -forever.

Yeah, they're not Romulans. They're not even the Klingons or the Cardassians. Even the Ferengi have more going for them. They're the Kazon.

That'd imply the Romulans are superiors to those. Ferengi were great in DS)

Eh, not quite. Drow are powerful and cunning, usually.
