    Default Artificer Subclass Idea: Runesmith

For those who might have missed it, the Artificer was the first fully-developed alternate class to be presented for 5th edition, shared via Unearthed Arcana early in 2017. However, so far, there's only two subclasses for it; the Alchemist, who specialises in being a support class through its bag of alchemical tricks (healing potions, tanglefoot bags, etc), and the Gunsmith, who is a secondary ranged combatant who can also bolster other party members via spellcasting.

However... I think there's room for a third subclass. The Runesmith. To me, this represents the most "magic-focused" of the Artificer's archetypes, as the class itself has a fairly nebulous "magitek" feel - which is, after all, unavoidable. Of course, even with that in mind, there's at least three "niches" that the Runesmith could occupy, and I personally can't pick between them:

The "versatile" artificer, with more variety in its magical gear.

The "abjurer" artificer, with a focus on using runes to negate enemy spells and magic.

The "melee combatant" artificer, using augmented arms and armor to be better in combat, much like how we have the ranged combat-focused Gunsmith.

Heck, it could even blend some of these elements - a melee combatant with some aspects of the abjurer kind of feels like the old 4e Runesmith.

Is anyone interested in this idea? I've love to discuss it and see if it can be made a reality - it's quite important to my Malebolge homebrew setting.

I like the melee combatant archetype; adding elemental damage to your melee weapon attacks is always fun. You could probably play around with that; modifying arms & armour to deal & resist specific types of elemental damage, maybe?

Abjurer also sounds both fun & useful, though it'd probably be harder to pin down the exact mechanics for negating magic as a core idea for the class.

So, does anyone else have any opinions on this matter? I really need to get this concept resolved, because I actually can't make any more solid progress on my homebrew setting because I'm still torn over whether or not this is a valid Artificer subclass.
