mad OOTS #1073 - The Discussion Thread

    New comic is up.

Also, I should mention that Ookoodook is having a Memorial Day sale now through Monday, 25% off all OOTS stuff (and some APE Games stuff), not counting "scratch & dent" items.

Ah, Elan. "I just fixed that!"

So who's going to give orders while Andi's under the engine?

I could get used to this pace of comic delivery

    Elan is priceless, as usual.

Andi is now functioning as a competent chief engineer again, but no one is captain.

Furkini Menace attacking the gas bag is not as useful as she thinks, as Elan can mend the gas bag. And the Fighter.

"Technically that worked" is one of the all time great glass-half-full moments.

    EDIT:

I think I saw "Sunrise Gravy" on the menu at Denny's once.

No-one, which is why a crew member felt the need to unilaterally stop the ship.

Andi can be captain, or chief engineer, but not both at once. A good captain would realize this immediately.

Well, it looks as if the bridge crew hand holds her, then her command goes better. That's no way to captain a ship, though. Also, Elan's gotta be running low on spells now. She puts enough gashes in the balloon, he won't be able to patch 'em all.

IIRC, he's out of level-0 and level-1 slots, but I believe he has a significant number of other slots still - it's just extremely wasteful to use them to cast Mend.

The bigger question is how he will get up there to cast it. There aren't any convenient ropes attached to that particular area of the blimp, and its facing downward so he probably cant climb up there and cast his spell without falling.

Side note, I tried to spell climb with a p four times while writing that.

Roy explicitly states that Elan can cast Mend with his feet on the deck in panel #6. Also, since the ship stopped moving in panel #2, it's a lot easier.

Eh, it's got a ten foot range. I think it'd reach. Also, p is really close to b, in fairness.

It is possible for Roy to be wrong, since he's not a caster and may not know the range of the spell.

With the engines stopped, nobody needs to give orders to the helm. I will also note that Andi is a lousy ship's engineer. For fuel and electrical, and engines, before you do maintenance you use Tag Out Procedures. Lucky for her, the engine controllmen (Kwesi) knows what needs to be done and shuts off the engine to prevent an accident during maintenance. *shakes finger* Andi, you are supposed to know better than that! Good mechanic? Yeah. Good ship's engineer? Not So Much.

That shutting off of engines was to prevent a fuel leak and or / other accident, while Andi jury rigs the engines/props to increase lift. Once again some of our pirates (Kwesi, Mateo) are able to keep their minds on task and on their duties during this high stress event. Andi? Not so much. (But at least she's finally playing to her strengths in terms of fixing things ...)

I assumed they did it to halt their otherwise imminent impact with the side of a cliff while Andi was working. That seems somewhat more likely than "What andi is doing is actually incredibly dangerous to her well being and she somehow doesn't know this."

I do not agree. The OoTS gets mission failure if the ship cannot fly. Elan's effort is in a lot of ways the main effort: keep the ship flying. As such, whatever it takes is a resource well spent since failure to expend that resource ends the chance for mission success. The enemy has a mission success mode of "stop the ship." Countering the enemy's mission is also a path to mission success. Elan's action are not a waste. They are critical nodes on the path to success.

Remember: it's about mission success (over all optimized collective action) not optimization of one small sub set of the operation. Larger scale optimization often requires some subordinate functions to be suboptimal. (Lessons of real life program management, project management, mission success, etc).

The previous episode lacked comedy but this makes up for it.

Andi is showing herself to be a bad engineer as well as a bad captain. Whether her modification should be tried with the ship at speed is something she should know. Even if it's not known because it's a new technique, a good engineer understands machines well enough to immediately work it out.

"Wasteful" implies spending resources in a foolish or shortsided way. If it is absolutely necessary to spend a resource to achieve vital goals they aren't wasted.

Maybe both, but I concede that I am making an inference or assumption on why Kwesi shut down the engine. (Based on my engineering and maintenance experience, on ships and planes both).

I'd rather they just throw/push this giantess over the side. That gets rid of her threat, lightens the ship, and also lets the beloved Furkini Menace live to fight another day. So We Need To Learn Her Name! (Ref the escape from Azure city and having a name as a way to remain alive...)

Because that would require her to have such an absurd degree of luck in her engineering that it stretches plausibility. It seems incredibly unlikely that she could consistently enter such dangerous circumstances unaware and make it out without getting hurt over years and years of engineering.
