Default Ghostfoot's Red Hand of Doom - Righteous Resistance (IC)

    WHO CAN STAND AGAINST
    THE SCION OF THE ABYSS?

The frozen hilltops danced with fire.

Throughout the heart of the wild mountains the humans called the Giantspires, great bonfires had been kindled atop the ridges overlooking the lowlands of Impiltur. There thousands of warriors had gathered -- hobgoblins in armor dyed scarlet, thick-thewed bugbear berserkers, goblin worg riders and skirmishers and archers, and the horned ones as well, who often towered over the rest. For so long they had fought each other, tribe against tribe, race against race, engaged in the endless test of battle, feud, and betrayal. But tonight . . . tonight they stood together, hated enemies shoulder-to-shoulder, shouting together as brothers. And they saw that they were strong, and together they danced and sang and shook their blades at the smoke-hidden stars overhead.

"We are the Kulkor Zhul!" they shouted, and the hills shook with the thunder of their voices. "Uighulth na Hargai! None can stand before us!"

One by one the tribes fell silent. Armor creaked as thousands turned to look up to the Place of Speaking. There, a single champion emerged from the assemblage and slowly climbed the ancient stone stair cut into the side of the hill. A hundred bright yellow banners stood beneath him like a phalanx of spears, each marked with a great red hand. The warpriests holding the banners chanted battle-prayers in low voices as the champion ascended.

On the hundredth step he stopped and turned to face the waiting warriors. He was tall and strong, one of the hobgoblin chieftains, but dark scales gleamed across his shoulders, and jutting horns protruded from his head. "I am Azarr Kul, Son of the Abyss!" he cried. "Hear me, warriors of the Kulkor Zhul! Tomorrow we march to war!"

The warriors roared their approval, stamping their feet and clashing spear to shield. Azarr Kul waited, holding his hands aloft until they quieted again. "The warpriests of the Doom Hand have shown us the way! They have taught us honor, discipline, obedience -- and strength! No more will we waste our blood fighting each other. We will take the lands of the elf, the dwarf, and the human, and make them ours! Under the banner of the Red Hand of Doom we march to victory and conquest! Remember that you stood here this night, warriors of Kulkor Zhul! For a hundred generations your sons and your sons' sons will sing of the blood spilled by your swords and the glory you win in the nights to come! Now, my brothers -- to WAR!"

The frozen hilltops were too small to hold the shout the Kulkor Zhul gave in answer to their warlord's call.

    ………………

Not far away, a small group winds its way along an old road, the spring sun piercing the high cloud and the air cold and still. The sparsely settled lands of the Farwater lay nestled in the northern frontier of Impiltur, the frozen muddy road winding north to the Cold Lands through lowlands marked only by the odd copse of gnarled trees or flyspeck of a town.

To the north lie the Cold Lands - war-ravaged Damara and the horse tribes of the Narfell. To the east, across the Easting Reach are the forests of the Great Dale and gateway to the Utter East, Thesk. South is the Sea of Fallen Stars and far to the west, beyond the impassable Earthspur Mountains, are the farmlands of the Vast and the frontier cities of the Moonsea.

The town of Lenchford lies a few miles ahead. It’s a settlement hard on the edge of the Rawlinswood, and the best place from which to begin exploring the nearby lands….

The Goliath walked with his colleagues towards the small town. Peaked houses and the surrounding area looking more than peaceful. At odds with a 7ft tall figure garbed in plate, fur and chain festooned with weapons. The savage looking equipment all festooned with various symbols of Tyr and his scales of justice.

He was tall, tall even for a Goliath his grey skin mottled with patches of darker lichen making almost tiger-like stripes over his body and skull though not much was visible under the heavy plate and the well worn weapon straps. His helmet was off revealing a hairless head and an open face with light grey - almost white- eyes.

Looking at the town his low gravelly voice is loud in the peaceful environment. "Mead, meat and a warm bed will be welcome tonight. Once settled we can start searching for and signs of the greenskins massing. Then crush them!" At the end he grins widely, clearly looking forward to battles to come, a hand resting on the hilt of a massive heavy broad bladed longsword over 4ft long carved from the fangs of some sort of massive wyrm.

    Volstaad

Not for the first time since his return, the sight of the familiar architectural style of the houses of the nearby town combined with the mountainous landscape rising in the distance to the east triggered conflicting feelings of comfort and apprehension.

Volstaad suppressed the rising sense of apprehension; no point dwelling on those memories - they were the first steps on a path that was long and bloody, and one which he no desire to tread again. He shivered, but not from the cold; thanks to his heritage, his well worn but still magical cloak, and the fact that he'd spent the last dozen years in lands where such weather would be considered a balmy summer's day, the chill touched him not at all.

The tiefling glanced at his tall, stony companion and resisted the urge to pull the hood of cloak over the shiny black horns that jutted from his brow. "Aye, some warm food and decent drink would be most welcome," he said agreeably. The drink especially - sleep always came after with a strong drink... or several. "Hunting goblins in the foothills and the forest, we're going to be sleeping rough for a while."

    Javartis Stangle

Marching along with his new allies, the lesser noble human was used to traveling by foot and although he wore armor the mithral metal it was made of didn't slow him down. The travel gave time to get to know each other. Soon enough they would be counting on each other for their lives and the safety of Impiltur if the rumors held true. Javartis carried a sealed message for the captain in Lenchford, but he was more interested in pursuing the rumors of the greenskins massing. Perhaps the message dealt with that very topic.

Javartis' fine but sturdy blue cloak shielded him from the spring chill although the magic amulet he also wore would protect him from even severe cold or heat, a gift from his father Lord Stangle of Sarshel. The cloak had an insignia sewn into what would be the upper left chest when the cloak was pulled closed or his left shoulder when the cloak was left open. It had a purple background with a vertical longsword signifying military might. The crossguard consisted of two hands in a warm embrace signifying trade. Over the hilt was a book, signifying knowledge. Peace through might of arms, trade, and knowledge. He stood tall and handsome similar to his father and brothers, and walked with an air of confidence but without the feeling of arrogance common to those raised in wealth and power. He needed this path. A time to get away from the death of his family. He was used to death of those around him in battle. Dealing with the loss of Satine would take time. Dealing with the threat to Impiltur gave him a new sense of purpose.

The warmage considered the group. A scout, 2 warriors, a warrior cleric, and himself. A good balance for a group of swordpoints whether they considered themselves a group yet or not. The first taste of battle would tell. It seemed they all wanted a chance at the greenskins. The tiefling's look gave Javartis an additional insight. The unfocused stare was one he had seen from soldiers who had seen too much too soon. It was not Javartis' place to inquire, at least not at this point.

The group crested a hill and could see Lenchford not too far off. Javartis smiled and spoke with joy. "There it is. Lenchford. A fresh cooked meal will be quite welcome. Hopefully they have more information on what we seek."

"A bath," Raiatari Eikibe said wistfully. The pretty, fair-haired, mocha-skinned aasimar walked alongside her pack mule, the stoic beast bearing her pack as it trudged down the dusty road. She was clad in as lightweight garb as she wore back in her homeland; thanks to her inhuman heritage, all but the bitterest cold of the harshest winter left her unaffected. Her bronze-plated armor shone golden in the sunlight, and she carried a sword at her side, but there the image of martial prowess ended; Raia carried a harp, humming and strumming out a tune. Her playing was passable, even good as her slender fingers danced across the strings, but she was lost in her playing and far from focused on what was going on around her. The girl's bright blue eyes were distant as she strove for just the right turn of phrase in her playing.

"And maybe a good audience for once! The last few inns haven't exactly had the happiest clientele. Something's got the people downhearted." Even as she spoke, Raia was more intent on the practice than on the path; she was trying to remember a particularly uplifting turn of musical phrase she had once heard. "Are things usually this, um, unhappy around here?"

Appearing a mundane and nondescript traveler or woodsman aside from the chitinous plates covering her shoulders and arms, ending in spines that extended just past her fingertips, and a simple crown just above her head - both adornments shades of shimmering, translucent blues - Lana mostly strode along her fellows in silence. Not one for subtlety, an observant eye would find her only slightly holding back an impatient frown. Though relieved from the discovery of greater details regarding her mission (the ominously massing goblinoids), she was nonetheless tiring of uneventful travel and eager to spill greenskin blood.

She tread slightly off the side of the road, walking several paces ahead of the group, keeping an uninterested ear turned toward conversation of the comforts of civilization while searching her peripherals and scanning the scene ahead. At least the others had the appearance of competence, and she could appreciate the looks of experience they wore - this was no time for soft, green men.

She turned, calling back to the others, "All looks clear ahead!" before grumbling, mostly to herself, "I'll let you know if I ever see a happy town of "civil" folk."

"Thank you Lana." A well trained scout who enjoyed her work!

Javartis turned to Raiatari as they walked. "Unfortunately most of the places we come across northward will be smaller. Lenchford might be an exception since it has a river crossing. Perhaps the spirits in the last couple of villages were affected by the below average tasting ale. I, for one, enjoyed listening to you sing and look forward to hearing more." As the group continued toward Lenchford the warmage began to study the town from afar- its outskirts, access, terrain, and the layout of the town. it was second nature to him to notice an area in terms of strategy and tactics in case the need for action came up.

The Goliath shrugs at the young woman's question. "You lowlanders are always unhappy. There is no joy in your souls or in the brick houses you make. Your inns are the closest you come to the joy of the clan hold. Music, song, a roaring fire and the gathering of family and friends."

At the scout's words he smiles widely, "See, even Lana agrees. " He picks up the pace slightly hustling towards the centre of the village seeking a guardsman to ask about the massive they'd received from the local captain, or an inn to rest and speak with the locals, or a temple to the one handed one.

As Raia strums her harp - Of course it would be a harp - and when Ukachka comments, and his fall upon the symbols of Tyr that adorn the goliath, Volstaad finds his hand unconsciously drifting towards the hilt of the curved blade at his hip. Surprised, he quickly releases the grasp on his weapon before anyone hopefully notices. Old habits die hard, I guess.

"Gatherings of family and friends are fine things - if you have them, that is," the tiefling comments without a trace of bitterness. "As for the unhappiness of these folk, it has been many years since I last travelled these roads, and when I did it was no lie to say that very few were happy to see me, so I could not rightly say. They are fearful people; perhaps it is fear of goblin raids that have them upset? The tribes have always raided the outlying settlements - when they're not busy raiding each other, that is."

Upon hearing some words witch which she could agree, the scout's pace slowed to bring her closer to her companions. She grinned, cocking her head to glance upward at the mountainous man from the mountains, and let out a dry chuckle.

"There is wisdom in your words, Ukachka - the harder these "civil folk" try to build up grand communities, the more distant from each other they seem. The giants of the North, the berserkers of the East... even the greenskins know the value of a clan, that it is strong like a pack. ...Though goblinoid scum still do not understand balance. At least a town of men will on rare occasion strive to give as much as take, as do even the mighty beasts, but greenskins sweep through like a foul plague, slaughtering with pleasure, burning the land, and even preying on each other, as our horned companion here pointed out. That's part of what is so troubling about these recent revelations - a unified band could pose a serious threat to lives and freedoms of all in the region, man and beast alike."

She stopped abruptly, a grim mood settling once again. It was also more words than she had spoken at once in the time she had traveled in this group, a thought adding to her discomfort as she turned her focus back to her surroundings.

The road crests a small rise and descends into a cold, misty grove in a large, shallow dell. In the distance, several miles away, you make out the faint spires and hearthfires of Lenchford smouldering gently in the cold spring air. An abandoned farmhouse, partially visible through the mossy trees, stands on one side of the road. You've passed a dozen spots like this one already today, but this one feels wrong. The mule snorts and stops, refusing to take another step. Suddenly you glimpse the glint of mail through the leaves at the side of the road. Fierce warriors - tall, hairy goblinoids - are lying in wait!

Even as you reach for your weapons there is a shout from one of the hobgoblins and a hail of arrows flies from the marauders lurking in the foliage on each side of the path, striking Volstaad for 19 damage, Javartis for 22 damage & Raiatari for 5 damage.

The Goliath curses as hobgoblins rise from the sides of the narrow path. "For the maimed God, the blade of Justice shall cleave you down!". Raia was about to answer their misanthropy with some pointed comments about the sort of reception she'd received in rural communities, but the arrows suddenly zipping out of the underbrush interrupted her. One arrow missed her, but the other didn't. It struck her in the chest, but her maille had stopped it from going too deep and by some miracle it hit one of the sparse few parts that actually were armor.

"Ow! Hey, that hurt!" Raiatari dropped to a knee, yanking the arrow out scanning to try and pick up the enemy. Her bright blue eyes narrowed when she spotted the savage humanoids. It was like they were not even trying to hide, such was their contempt for civilized folk.

Javartis noticed the ambush a second too late like the rest of the party. The arrow that hit him was a solid abdomen shot that nearly put him down for the count. The seasoned warmage pushed the pain aside and dashed behind the mule, both for cover and preventing it from running. While turning back to face the fight he dipped his finger into his spell pouch. He raised the hand while twisting his wrist and speaking a word of magic. With his dipped finger pointing upward a red hot rock formed above it. Javartis pointed at the one of the hobgoblins and the rock flew directly at its target. The underbrush and trees failed to protect it.

As the murderous volley of arrows thunks all around Ukachka bounds up the bank into the nearby thicket, axe in hand. The hobgoblin brings his bow up to aim another shot at Ukachka's companions but spies the big man bearing down on him too late. Splack! His axe bites deep into the hobgoblin soldier for 67 damage leaving the mortally wounded body folded and broken on the ground.

Volstaad draws his scimitar and takes the battle to the assailants as well. Dashing into the underbrush he confronts an archer. Even as the hated goblinoid tosses his bow aside and fumbles for this sword and shield Volstaad slashes out, the acid-dripping blow a solid one connecting for 10 total damage leaving the foe visibly shaken as it tries to parry.

Raiatari and Lana engage an archer on the opposite side of the path, a fierce sparring but no blood drawn. A projectile of molten rock flies from Javartis as he ducks behind the mule, an archer taking aim at him but catching it full in the face for 23 damage and keeling backward a faceless smoking ruin.

The hobgoblins fight back, two archers taking aim at Ukachka arrows pinging harmlessly off the big mans heavy armour. The other two hobgoblins raise longswords and engage with Volstaad and Raiatari. Evidently trained combatants they are nevertheless unable to get past the defences to land a blow against either

Lana's frustration with herself only increased, her first attempt at proving herself to her companions in combat so far unimpressive, but the glorious sight of Ukachka's powerful blow nearly cleaving a hobgoblin in twain brought a peace to her mind.

Still in pain from the arrow lodge in his gut, Javartis stays focused and observes the battle's flow. His allies are working their way through the enemy ranks. The warmage decided to continue dealing with the enemy furthest away. He repeated the previous spell again. The flaming rock sailed past the first two enemy on the left to then impact on the third and furthest hobgoblin. He enjoyed the opportunity to call upon his powers but another thought did cross his mind. He mentions it to the party in Damaran. "A prisoner for questioning would be useful."

Raia flashed the hulking goliath a grateful smile, then turned and dashed out into the road. When she judged herself to be about in the center of the group, she took a deep breath and raised her voice in a hymn of valor and triumph. Sure, the words were Mulhorandi and her party members wouldn't have gotten half of the references anyways, but that wasn't how the magic of it worked. Raiatari reached up and touched the badge at her throat, feeling the warm glow of the magic intensify as it amplified twofold.

Volstaad lashes out pressing his advantage. The hobgoblin is outmatched and as it tries to bring his shield to bear the tiefling shifts left and runs it through for 15 damage. Lifeblood flows and Volstaad quickly moves forward away from his fallen foe.

Roaring, the axe-wielding goliath hurtles across the path smashing into Raiatari's opponent. Reeling the soldier barely has time to look up as an axe blow cleaves into him for 24 damage sending his broken body sailing into the frosty undergrowth.

A whirring sling-stone flicks past the combatants from Lana's sling. Crack! it strikes true for 10 damage, ricocheting off the helmeted head of one of the remaining archers. He takes a faltering step back before adjusting his helmet and raising his bow again.

Javartis continues his spellcasting from his heroic position behind the pack-mule. Another searing projectile courses across the battlefield smashing into the far archer. He ducks behind a tree avoiding the worst of it as the missile bursts into flames for 12 damage showering him with burning debris but still standing.

The two injured archers hold their ground, continuing to fling arrows against Ukachka only to ping off his armoured bulk. Behind them, large shapes flit through the shadows of the frozen boughs...

From the direction of the ruined farmhouse two hobgoblins stride boldly into view. One wears a tabard bearing the emblem of a bloody red hand or claw, a symbol you now notice painted on the shields and armour of the ambushing archers. He holds a smoldering flame-kissed shortsword in each hand and confidently smirks as the melee unfolds before him.

The other clanks along next to him in heavy banded mail armour, an ornate evil-looking mace resting over one shoulder and shield on the other arm. A grotesque horned goat- or demon-skull helmet is pushed back on his head as he surveys the scene. Padding behind them are four of the largest wolves you have ever seen. The size of large ponies with bristling midnight-black fur and eyes that flicker with an unholy red light it is clear that these are no ordinary animals that pace back and forth in the frost, breath steaming hungry for sentient prey.

"Chuunsh Zarr, ar an khruun ghaagaan dhagaar or ghaagac daan magaan kolaal akhuuc maagaan." says the bladebearer to his armoured companion.

"Ecn Uth-Lar A rhaal'degaan o agaan shuugaan. Den dech rhaan a daal'duulkaan shakaan. Daan rhaal lhon kelaan daan dhagaar duuc, taan. A dec dar daan dech taal dhuur ghaagec tuuc okuuc." responds helmet-head, gesturing to each of you as he talks.

"Cuunr dar ar dech druun daal akec huul." finishes the swordsman, clashing his blades together and sending a small cloud of sparking embers drifting in the still air.

Javartis' eyebrow raises as the fight changes from a simple ambush to a small battle. He calls out to his companions. "Form up in the woods. Don't let the wolves overwhelm you."

The warmage turns his attention to the new hobgoblins and answers them in Goblin. "Uth-Lar eh? Tell us who sent you so we can tell them of your deaths." Javartis dips his fingers back into his spell pouch and this time pulls out a small jade gem. He points toward Uth-Lar then with a word of magic throws the gem at the ground. It disappears before hitting the ground just as stones begin to rain down on the two new hobgoblins and one of their wolves. The warmage then moves into the woods near most of the party.

"You're hurt!" Raia exclaimed as Javartis came loping up to her. She frowned as she looked over his injuries and then at the oncoming wolves, biting her lip before nodding. "Alright, hold still - and try not to get torn up too badly, I don't have a whole lot of this left." Ukachka moves off the frozen path into the nearby bushes. Twigs crack under his heavy boots as he invokes the power of Tyr bringing newfound power to the group. Nearby Raiatari turns to the injured Javartis, healing the worst of his wounds through the power of her scarab belt. Lana hurls a javelin at the nearest archer, the wicked goblinoid forced to duck behind a leafless tree to avoid the attack.

The massive wolves hunch and growl terribly, muscles tensed ready for carnage. At a sharp barked command from the flame wielder they launch themselves forward, the pack splitting to each bring down the nearest warm-blooded prey! They bound across the battlefield with alarming speed, crashing through bushes with unholy hunger burning in their eyes. One latches on to Ukachka's leg massive jaws tearing for 21 damage before he bats it off with the haft of his axe. Another two bear down on Raiatari one grabbing her in its maw and lifting her clear off her feet teeth grinding for 23 damage before tossing her to the ground. Arrows flit through the melee from the remaining archers but fall harmlessly.

The hobgoblin leaders share a chuckle at the chaos the pack inflict. The heavily armoured, goat-helmed hobgoblin reveals itself to be a cleric or priest of sorts. Holding high a holy symbol it begins the gestures and words of divine spellcasting, pointing to Lana lurking in the smoldering trees...she feels oppressive power pulling at her mind but steeling herself manages to resist the foul magic!
