    Default Journal of irreproducible results

the Journal of irreproducible results, or JIR is a book of instructions how to make objects and cast spells that don't do what they say they do. PC's will have to carry out the experiment themselves to see what happens, they can't get to a further page until they do the experiment listed on the preceding pages.

    first page: peanut butter cookies
using an amount of peanut butter worth 1 cp, an egg and some fire your party can make peanut butter cookies in 10 minutes
    DC 35 yields result 1
    DC 10 yields result 2

1: actual cookies with no unusual side effects
2: fire cookies, ingesting deals 1d6 fire damage, throwing on the ground deals 2d6 damage to one square and 1 damage to surrounding squares.

come up with your ideas and we can drive PC's bonkers.

it'd be a profession cooking check, you can make it untrained though, the point is to be able to reproduce the items or results in the book is supposed to be very difficult, or darn near irreproducible.

    knife of wounding perhaps?
i'm not sure on the spec'ing of magical items but they'd clearly be less than normal for this book because you don't actually get what you think you're getting, but the way a knife of wounding would work is you'd think you were getting a knife that inflicts wounds that bleed and inflict an additional 2 points of damage per round, but in reality you're much more likely to just get something heals 1d8+5 when you stab someone with it 5 times a day, and if it runs out of charges the wounds inflicted by it instantly close up after you withdraw it.

DC 35: Fried Rice. Tasty and nutritious, blending the flavors of the spices with those of the meat and vegetables into a succulent dinner.

DC 10: Rice golem. Treat as a tiny animated object that serves the caster for 1d4 days before drying out into immobility.

DC 35: Egg Surprise. I can't tell you what it is; it's a surprise!

DC 10: Egg of Annihilation. Anything directly touching the shell of the egg when it is broken suffers from the spell Disintegrate, at minimal caster level. Deadly, but be very cautious about carrying it around.

    That kind of stuff, right?

Book one is on the Kindle now. It's a mix of hard science fiction and fantasy. How's that work? Surprisingly well.

I share the ebook version of it freely. Link to download it is at the top of that page.

doesn't have to be just foods, could be a light spell that actually freezes nearby plants. or a weapon that actually teleports the user to the nearest pub.
