    Default Visually awesome spells/powers/effects?

As title. It's best if the spell is also mechanically powerful, but that's not a must-have if the example is sufficiently awesome.

I think Maw of Chaos is cool. You literally rip the fabric of reality a new one.

Probably fire storm can fit here even if it's not the best spell. It can be decent to target crowds of weaker opponents though.

Well, there are so many to mention imho, that I don't know where to start. I'll just mention a few that cross my mind.

    all Polymorph/wild shape spells/abilities:
Transforming your shape into a powerful combat form is looking really awesome imho.

    Size increasing spells:
The bigger, the more impressive it is..^^

    Eldritch Glaive:
Take a "Rod of Eldritch Power"(least) with Eldritch Glaive.
"Might the Force be with you"
Maybe play an old goblin in a robe and pretend to be Yoda^^

    Body outside Body:
Multiply your fighting power and call for your imaginary twins.

Hammer of Moradin - Quake & Power Throw:
For Quake you hit the ground with your warhammer to a emit a 60ft cone that throws your enemies off the balance (reflex or prone). Power Trow is a 60ft line attack with your warhammer. Imho has a very high visual coolness factor^^

    Whirlwind Attack:
While getting it via feats is to expensive for most builds, the weapon enchantment can be worth it for a good bunch of builds.
With some optimization, it can be really devastating (pounce + WW + charge multipliers =WinWin).
And the visual is the base of any 2h fighter in fantasy films/books/stories. SPIN TO WIN! DEMACIA ! (eh.. oh.. wrong game..^^)
    El Mariachi dual double-hand-crossbow action
Papa Smurf a Redcap Lion of Talisid (ubercharger/gish)
Hellfire Escalation Glaivelock a Killer Kobold build
Hammerdin of Moradin a guide to epic hammer throwing
    ShurikeNado a Shuriken Master build
Almighty Claw of Malar monk/warlock gish (with minor DBZ-SSJ fluff)
TO: BoBaFeat Body outside Body & Void Disciple 4 to break the game.

Blasting is fairly sub-optimal and so is fire damage, but I'm fairly sure that Fire Storm deals some pretty good damage for a core evocation. And there's always Energy Substitution!

Fair point. Especially if it's unexpected.

Quite. Especially Giant Size. Pretty much one of the very few ways for a PC to reach Colossal size without Polymorph-type spells.

    Eldritch Glaive:
Take a "Rod of Eldritch Power"(least) with Eldritch Glaive.

    I honestly found this amusing.

    Body outside Body:
Multiply your fighting power and call for your imaginary twins.
Especially if you're a gish or have other means of attack(example: Eldritch Theurge)

Hammer of Moradin - Quake & Power Throw:

    That sounds neat. Not bad!

Warblades also get Iron Heart maneuvers that work like it, if you didn't know.

How about Apocalypse From The Sky?

A minimum 170 mile radius raining fire or acid on the land is pretty goddamn impressive.
If build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day.

Or sonics. But yeah, point taken.

    PHBII, Evocation, Sor/Wiz 9

    It's a fort save-or-7d6 fire damage

If he fails, he dies, and in a 20 ft radius creatures take [caster level]d6 fire damage

If he saves, but the 7d6 fire dmg still kills him, the blast also occurs

I always liked the Bigby's Assorted Hand spells.

But I also like the truenamer utterance that nobody takes, Deny Passage, which prevents people from leaving the area by putting impassable red bars in their way, like a cage. It's possibly useful because it technically prevents creatures leaving the area by any means during the duration, but not as useful as, well, gate.

I like Erupt for a lot of mechanical reasons (even if it's got some issues you'll wanna get around), but as far as the fluff go, it's absolutely fantastic:

"You know what, screw this, screw all of you, and screw this town. I'm practically a demigod, so I declare that in one minute's time, this whole quaint little village is gonna be the location for a brand-new volcano!"

The spell that has the greatest proportionate visual awesomeness relative to its non-visual effects is surely Silent Image.

Choke, from Tome and Blood. It's a 2nd level conjuration that makes a pair of hands that grab someone by the neck and choke them for 1d4 per round. The target also has a -2 to attacks and all skill & ability checks while being choked.

There is a big caveat of it being a death effect.

    How about flamestrike?

Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down!'"

But Elijah replied to the captain, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and destroy you and your fifty men!" Then fire fell from heaven and killed them all.
Also, summoning spells. A colossal fiendish centipede might be a suboptimal choice for combat, but great for making impression.

Ah. also, if you are a druid, and don't mind being soaking wet, there is a stormwrack spell Stormwalk, that let's you teleport by suddenly emerging from a raging storm at the target location (causing one in the process)

The feat Spell Thematics exists for this purpose. It's a feat that lets you choose a theme, and apply that theme to any visual representation of any spells you can cast. Its only mechanical effect is increasing the Spellcraft DC to identify your spell by 4 and gives you +1 CL for 1 spell per spell level. Any other spell can be affected though, they just don't get the +1 CL bonus. It's not even considered a Metamagic effect, so it doesn't have a downside. You can't make a spell invisible with it.

This means a Fireball can be shaped as a bird that explodes in butterflies and crazy stuff like that.

I almost always let casters do that for free if they want, without any of the mechanical bonuses.
