Multiclassing from Sorceror to Necromancer...
Hullo to all! A semi-quick question for you:
I'm fairly new to D&D, and I've wanted to play a Necromancer since I started. As of right now, I play a 7th Level Chaotic Neutral Halfling Sorceror, and since one of the two Paladins in my party turned Blackguard, and the other...well...isn't exactly in our party anymore, I figured "Hey, this is a pretty good time then!" The problems I have are:
A) What's a good way to go about it in game? As in, how does one manifest Necromantic Powers?
B) Is going from a Sorceror to a Pure Necromancer (as in, not just having the few Necromancy School spells) at this level feasible?
C)Would becoming a Necromancer limit my spells?
D) Where would I find the template for said Necromancer?
I do have Complete Mage, which has the "Dread Necromancer", but I'd really like the "True" Necromancer.
PS- Please don't eat me because I'm a Pixie....

Re: Multiclassing from Sorceror to Necromancer...
Just multiclassing this way is a bad idea, since you won't get you wizard (necromancer) spells at high levels (you will max out at 5th level spells at level 20).
If you want to play a necromancer, see if your DM will let you do a character rebuild (a la PHBII), or just let you make a new character. Really though, it is far more effective to just learn necromancy spells, since RP wise there would be no differnece between a sorcerer who knows mostly necromancy spells and focuses on creating undead, etc. and a wizard who specializes in necromancy.
Wizards don't "manifest powers" (which with that wording is how psions are described), they learn and study how to manipulate arcane energy to suit their needs. A necromancer is simply a wizard who specializes in manipulating arcane energy through necromancy.
Sorcerers develop powers through instinct and innate ability. A sorcerer can develop their innate abilities into necromantic effects (and effectively be a necromancer).
Really, just see in your DM will let you change your spells known to fit your new concept, or build a new character.
I think you have the flavor mixed up and are focusing too much on class names, rather than RP or mechanics.
Also, necromancers aren't inherently evil, they just tend to be so because they spend so much time around negative energy and because messing with corpses is generally considered evil.Johannes factotum of the Bard Defense League

The main question that any DM should ask before making a house-rule or exception is, "Is it balanced?"

Re: Multiclassing from Sorceror to Necromancer...
Unearthed Arcana has sorceror/wizard varients that you might be interested in looking at.
After perusing through it, the Specialist Necromancer sorceror/wizard varient makes it so you lose your famaliar, but you gain an undead servant, you gain undead abilities, and can make undead stronger.
I forget whether or not Unearthed Arcana is part of the SRD... so you can search there too..
Keep in mind it's a varient, not a full blown prestige class.
Heroes of Horror may have a necromancer-based class, but I can't recall the details, as I haven't had the book in awhile...
Oh, and PS: Not all Necromancers are evil. ;-) Diablo II necromancers were just chaotic neutral. ;-)Paragon Badger (14 HP)

Re: Multiclassing from Sorceror to Necromancer...
You know, you're competely right. Come to think of it, I've pretty much taken a majority of the Necromantic spells I can take thus far, so I mean, a Sorcreor who specializes in Necromancy isn't too far-fetched...
Thanks Bard.
Edit: And Paragon.
As to an Undead companion...hm. That's an interesting thought.Last edited by Deth Muncher; 2007-08-08 at 12:46 AM.

Re: Multiclassing from Sorceror to Necromancer...
Well, with the religious undertones of the Diablo II world, I don't think many people really thought too well of animating the dead to become your servants. Even the sorcerors/esses didn't go there.
And what's more chaotic than doing things that conservative people are opposed to? :-PParagon Badger (14 HP)

But nobody really liked Gheed, either.
If there's a rule, there's someone out there trying to figure out how to get around it just to piss off his DM.
