Hah. I could do that right now. Unlike in your swamp lands, the air temperature can vary here, and we can get both cold and warm. It's been an uneasonably warm January, making the hammock viable.

Swamp is more southern-Mississippi and Louisiana. I'm central AL, we're heavily forested (low) highlands.

    Also, that sounds delightful!

It's also in Norway (and two other places, according to Wikipedia). The Norwegian one even has a joke attached to it:
Two Englishmen were asleep on a train in Norway. When it rolled in to a station, one of them woke up and looked out the window. Startled they turned to wake their companion, shouting: "Wake up! The train must have crashed when we were sleeping, because now we're in Hell!". The second Englishman looked out the window, then pointed toward a building and said: "Don't worry, there's God's expedition."

("gods-expedition" means "goods office" in 19th century Danish.)

I barely hit freezing down here! Sometimes (as in once every few years) it snows enough to make a footprint!

That's not impressive, seeing as a fridge is designed to keep things just above the freezing point of water. If it were always warmer outside than in your fridge, snow would be literally impossible.

My house is 1900 square feet, two stories, on a third of an acre, by a picturesque horse meadow, and came with a free spare house (around 1500 sq ft, also 2 story, unfinished interior, running electric and stubbed for plumbing). Less than 200k.

So my maternal grandfather's family traces back to some farms in that part of Norway. The family joke was that my ancestors were the toughest raiders in Scandinavia because they went through Hell to go viking, and came back through on their way home.

While I can't say from experience (never talked to someone from their) that is basically just the standard reply to expect if you mention how flat the rectangle of Canada is.

As far as real estate. My folks and I are looking into a couple houses around 2k square feet in good crime areas all of which are under 30k, although those are fixer uppers. Normal houses are around 70-100k for the same size in the same area.

Just to reinforce your point, Germany's nowhere near the size of Texas. It's about half the area, in fact; somewhere between New Mexico and Montana.
