MFW it's been eleven years since I made the second ever metal thread. It's neat to see these are still going. You know what I miss my dudes and not-dudes? Shows. I saw Overkill shortly before the world got locked down, and I've been aching for some serious live thrash.

I'm pretty bummed about the Aether Realm/Paladin tour getting cancelled, especially with Aether Realm's new album being so clearly written with a live setting in mind.

I also miss shows. Now, Norway has mostly been able to keep things on lockdown, so I hope to be able to organise a small outdoor show in june or july. But it will be really small, with a cap of either 50 or 100 people, depending on what the municipality will permit

I was supposed to see DragonForce in March. Now I'm just hoping for a rain check instead of a refund.

I'm actually kind of stoked on this - don't you think there will be some awesome acoustic shows as a result?

I don't think so actually. There has been some streamed acoustic shows, but it seems a lot of the fans are tired of it, and want the electric shows back

It's been interesting to see the different responses to the crisis, and the ways people are getting creative with streams. A friend of mine does a weekly show; mostly him chatting with another friend, some live performances and interviews, some pre-recorded videos (mostly experimental electronic stuff). The Gothicat festival has been put together a few good video shows. A couple other friends of mine did a neat one; three bands, switching between songs: https://youtu.be/QfB2lp08EnA I've done a couple myself; experimenting with pre-records because as a solo artist juggling sound/video and interacting with people is a little tough. The last one I did with a three camera setup (cell phone and tablet, really), edited sort of like a music video, and then live hosted chatting between songs (and typing during). Sort of looked like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVdPkTkfua8

But really the thing I like the most is more people are tuning in to this sort of stuff (myself included). I don't think this will or should be the be-all/end-all of what music is to become, but I'd like to see more, and more people getting creative with what can be done in a streaming performance.

My last real show attended was Wovenhand and OM, so a pretty solid one, even as disappointing as some of the cancellations have been.

For "good things that have been around for a while but I had never heard of": Riot's Immortal Soul (Heavy/Power). The youtube sound really doesn't make it justice, however.

Unleash the Archers has a new single out that I'm really digging so far.

I really liked Apex, it's one of my favourite albums ever. Let's see what they make this time

A general audio question: can anyone here hear the difference between FLAC and streaming services like Amazon and Spotify? I'm not talking about HD streaming. I personally cannot notice any improvement, even with headphones.

I can, but not always. I mostly notice it on songs that are very dense and/or loud, such as Screenshot by Swans; About halfway through on the Spotify version, a lot of the underlying instruments sort of muddle together and start buzzing, even through good headphones. With my FLAC file for the song, though, I can pick out any of the dozen or so layers and follow it through the whole track. It's honestly almost 2 different songs.

Then Wilderun's Far from where dreams unfurl might fit the bill... it's a song I love, but there's a part where I can't tell what I'm listening to.

Hey, you might want to check out Harakiri For The Sky! They're pretty awesome ;)

If that floats your boat you might want to give Agrypnie a shot.
