First piece of advice: Determine which subforum (listed above the general role-playing threads) matches the game system you'll be playing in:
D&D 5E/Next
D&D 4E
D&D 3e/3.5e/d20 - Pathfinder also fits here.
Older D&D and Other Systems
Repost the question there.
If you ask it here in the General Roleplaying forum, no one knows which rules you're using, so you may get less-than-useful advice.

Yep, as mentioned above you'll get better advice if you post this question in a sub-forum which corresponds to the edition of D&D (or Pathfinder) which you are playing.
A mod may lock this thread, but it's not because your question is bad -- it's just in the wrong place.
When you make a new thread in the appropriate sub-forum, try to include more information, like:
- Which setting?
- What level? If above 1, do you get to pick magical loot?
- What are the other characters in your party?
- Did you roll for stats? Are you using point-buy? How many points?
... stuff like that.

Think of a concept. Who is he? Why is he doing what he does? Likes/dislikes? Strenghts/flaws? Does he have friends, enemies or family? What motivates him? What are his goals and dreams? Where does he come from? What is his background? What does he look like?
Oh then you throw some numbers on your sheet to represent those questions you've answered and you can start roleplaying
