Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
If it is not stupidly designed, the crane can't let go of the data until is is safely delivered to the operator. Of course, this is the Galactic Empire.

I would expect it to have some sort of "emergency release" that requires you to turn a key and press a button at the same time, personally.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
Go down to the bottom of the shaft, open the "maintenance" door, take the crystal off the floor (it fell through all those open grates), and then take it back upstairs to reload.
Or, just out the door.
...
Yea, all they had to do was drop it, and then go downstairs :-)Not "fire at". I never used the word "at"

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
And so ends another brilliant Jim plan.
“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
For the record, keybounce, Pete knows what the trooper is armed with because he's looking at the miniatures on the table. Apparently, the GM is a stickler for accurate minis. Or he took Pete's comment and rolled with it.

Huh. I never noticed before that the Rebels brought a transport ship on the mission for some reason.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
Regarding the commentary in today's episode - the chain goes Rear Admiral, Admiral, Fleet Admiral. Keybounce appears to be under the impression that Rear Admiral is the top admiral rank, and not the bottom one.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
A star Destroyer being disabled in one shot happened in the beginning of ESB...
As for ion torpedoes (and proton torpedoes), no the name doesn't make sense but that has long been part of Star Wars' (and many other "questionnable science" sci-fi) list of weapons. And bombing capital ships is the entire point of the Y-Wings, TIE Bombers, etc. No, it doesn't make sense, but Star Wars tactics never do.Forum Wisdom

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
Ion torpedoes are basically missiles that explode into... whatever the heck ion projectiles are made of in Star Wars. Ions I guess? They are extremely effective against shields and electronic systems. As was noted, in ESB a big Ion cannon was used from the surface of Hoth to completely shut down several Imperial Star Destroyers.
As for this movie, the ships themselves don't have good enough turret tracking to take down fighter sized targets particularly effectively, and X-wings are significantly better than TIE-fighters. In an open battle like this, the Rebels have a significant tech advantage, but due to lack of infrastructure, they cant afford to take anything other than maximally efficient trades or they come out worse. The Empire will literally drown them in bodies if they try to conquer the galaxy militarily, no matter how good their tech is.“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

I said I don't know military ranks.
I seriously thought "Rear Admiral" was the one that stayed in the rear. Not "fire at". I never used the word "at"

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
If I'm remembering my Honor Harrington right (and that HH has any relation to the real world):
Rear admirals are a step above Commodores, and are handed small fleets and task forces.
Vice admirals are a step higher still, and tend to be in command of significant fleets with Rear admirals working under them to manage the large squadrons that make up the fleet.
Full admirals are your really big fleet commanders, and will be in charge of the strategic direction for an entire region.
Fleet admirals are basically God, in charge of the entire Navy.
Interesting fact: I was curious to see how many Fleet Admirals are in the U.S. Navy. According to Wikipedia, there aren't any. Last one was Chester Nimitz.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
No. The Rear Admiral was in charge of the rear section of a formation in the days of sail warships. The Vice Admiral led the van, and the Admiral had the main body. If something happened to the Admiral, the Vice took over since he had a better view of what was happening.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
Spoiler: This RO sceneThis scene felt like it was sort of shoehorned in to me. In a normal Star Wars movie, you have some big battle with spaceships, and you also have some hand-to-hand lightsaber combat. In RO, the main character isn't force-sensitive, so you lose the lightsaber combat. This scene struck me as an attempt by the writers to insert an "up-close" fight between the protagonist and antagonist in order to make up for the lack of lightsabers.

Re: Darths & Droids IV: Not in Numerical Order
I have to agree with keybounce here, with one caveat: the Imps have to be aware enough to know the level of risk. If they think this is just, say, a regional payroll administration hub that the Rebels are attacking as a 'soft target', well, no real need to get extreme. If someone in the fleet knows what's here, yeah, lack of CommSec should equal Death on Swift Wings.
