Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
Felicitous Dinner
"You're a farmboy? Huh. Wouldn't have pegged that for you." He seems sleazy inner city type, not sleazy hillbilly type. "Her? Your mother, or your sister? Getting here can be hard, I know. My parents lost contact with their families and friends after they moved here, not even deliberately. Their calls stayed on dialtone, the letters they sent returned, emails bounced." Trying to say it's not all his fault, even if it actually is his fault. She doesn't know enough to say; he hasn't even said where he's from. She's assuming Outside at the moment, but could be wrong.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
[A Felicitous Dinner]
Valiance laughs, dunking his bread once again. "Ha, I know. Doesn't seem likely, does it?" That was a lifetime ago. It didn't even feel real anymore, more like a dream. A pleasant dream, at least. "My sister. Although, of course - I miss mom, too." He shakes his head sadly. "I wasn't able to attend her funeral. One of the few things I regret about defecting." Had he returned to the United States, he wouldn't likely have survived. "I wasn't allowed back into the country. You know, someone tried to kill me once? Not just me, but still - and that was on Russian soil." There's a chuckle there. It was almost funny now, although it certainly wasn't then. "So, if they could reach me there, well. I'm sure they would've shot me on sight back in the states."
None of it felt particularly real anymore. How could it? Earth was far behind him, now. "I haven't spoken to any of them in years, and... well, I never will again." He didn't even know if they were still alive, if something terrible hadn't happened to them. "I don't think there's any way back, not for me. Not much for me to do now but remember things fondly."

"I grew up in the Nexus. I have heard Russia and the States- I'm guessing United Sates of America?- but I don't know my politics. Why'd you defect, if I can ask? And why did they want to kill you?" Felicity has a vague understanding that there's philosophy or politics or something behind those two countries, but doesn't know exactly what. "They could make it here, if you can't make it there. Might not be able to send them back, though." And it'd require stuff that Dr. Val might not have access to, especially magical reagents.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
[A Felicitous Dinner]
With a grave nod, Val nods. He stirs at his soup before responding. "That must have been utterly fascinating. I've lived here for several years now, and yet!" He sips at his soup. Delicious! Just the way he liked it. "I still feel like a tourist." Then she starts asking some rather personal questions. Ah, but that was the point, right? Good to build a sense of trust. "It's sort of a long story." Another bite of bread. "It was 1983. The Cold War was heating up, and the Soviets needed scientists." He purses his lips here. How else to explain something like this? "I had just graduated with a doctorate in theoretical and applied mechanics, but my prospects with NASA had fallen through."
He shrugs. That was a particularly bitter pill to have swallowed. "I felt lost, like I had wasted my life. That's when he reached out to me." Valiance remembered that night well. The darkened vehicle, the bright white lights within. That voice. "He introduced himself as Cauvin Kramolagh. Claimed to be the head of a clandestine research organization known as Conference Zeta. It was backed by the Soviets, but their brand of science was unlike anything I had seen before." A long sigh. "He promised me steady work, told me that my dreams would come true if only I signed my life away to the Conference. How could I have refused?" If only he had, he wouldn't be here now.
Still, what could be done about it now? "I thought I'd be working on something life changing, that my contributions would push humanity out into the stars once again. I was wrong. My work was to be used for something quite terrible." He never fully learned what the Conference had intended, but what he had learned had frightened him. "But by then, I was too deep. If the Soviets didn't kill me, the Americans would've. So I worked."
"Three years later, within a research facility beneath the city of Pripyat, something went terribly wrong - and I ended up here."

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
[Double Date]
Uh-oh, best to cause a distraction while those two were arguing in silence. She had no clue why they were even trying to avoid attention like that when Cantata literary depended on body language to communicate.
"Not to my knowledge, but I'm hardly an expert. Most people I can play with don't do 'too complex' boardgames." She remarks with a sly glance in Kirk's direction. "But you know, you and Tina being together actually reminds me of something that happened to me way back that I recently got an update on. Both Kirk and Tina have probably heard this story at least three times now but as you're new I figure this would be a part of your 'initiation', eh?" Dena leans closer with a grin. "So, the story of the attack of the furry lesbians..."
She clears her voice. "I was on a mission in Riverside which involved stealing and potential kidnapping. This took place before I was a senior member so I did crappy job like this all the time. Anyway, it involved getting this big fancy manor which happened to host a party with a furry theme. Don't ask me why, I'm not really a fan of it. But everything went smoothly until I got to the kidnapping portion of the job and I had to abscond. I figured that was it though as I still got the stuff the client wanted."
The gorgon shakes her head. "Boy was I wrong as while I was showering two furry ladies, the same ladies the party had centered around, broke into my apartment. I had attempted to kidnap one of them so their anger was pretty justified but picture this. Three gals, two all furry with one blushing and the other pointing a weapon at me who's still only in a towel."
Dena grins again. "If I had heard about it now, I'd figured it was the plot of a porno. But thankfully they were a bit too pissed to consider such possibilities and I swing too much in the other direction to indulge them. We worked things out however and they eventually left. However, I actually looked them up a few years later and it turns out they're now married and still live in that big manor in Riverside which MERC happen to be policing. Which is pretty ironic when you think of it as it was the opposite of what I was doing back then."

Cantata watches the two silently converse from the corner of her eye. She can tell pretty well what’s going on here, but doesn’t consider it her place to interrupt. Maybe we need a girl’s night out; could be a few games that work with just three! She tries to make it clear from her expression that suggestion is entirely jovial and not some mean retribution for Kirk wanting to exclude her, before arching an eyebrow and gesturing for Dena to “do tell”, setting down her phone and leaning in.
The merc follows along eagerly with a sip of her drink, giggling silently when Dena gets to the real fun bit. As she finishes, a lightbulb seems to go off and she picks up her phone again. “A shame you weren’t the one who negotiated that contract; I bet it would have been quite an entertaining reunion"Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?"

Felicitous Dinner
"What kind of science were you doing? Space-flight related, or something else?" Felicity's family wound up in the Nexus after the Cold War, and she knows little of it. Currently she's half-imagining a war fought with iceburg-ships and freeze rays, or else one fought over a frozen wasteland of ice and snow inhabited by polar bears, penguins and solitary fortresses. She also doesn't recognise the name Pripyat, since mostly her parents told her about the country she was born in, not other countries in the same world.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
[A Felicitous Dinner]
Doctor Valiance shrugs and wrings his hands for a moment. It had started out so simple, so exciting. He had such high hopes for what would come to pass. "Mhm. I was part of a group of researchers tasked with designing a computer so powerful it would trivialize the way in which we navigated the complex mathematics required for space travel." He sighs and takes another bite of bread. "I was told our work would send Russians to Mars." A small smile. "We would have made history! But they lied to us. What we made, it was never used the way we intended." The smile fades as he remembers the day his creation was unveiled. "You see, the Soviets were no longer interested in space travel. They hadn't been, not since '69."
No, what they really wanted was so much stranger. "Rather than looking out to the stars for answers, they tried to pierce the veil of reality itself. They had become convinced that a whole world existed alongside us, a parallel universe - another dimension." It sounds insane to say out loud. And yet, he's only here because of it. Life is strange. "They believed accessing it would provide them the advantage necessary to win the 'war'." Valiance had never been particularly interested in their cause. "They built a drill, a primitive hardlight resonator capable of slicing through subatomic particles." The first time he saw it, it had taken his breath away. "It was a terrifying thing to hold - a manmade horror beyond comprehension, exactly what Tesla had warned us of."
His appetite has started to diminish. "It required an extraordinary amount of energy to function, hence its creation beneath the plant at Pripyat." They had called it the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. "It was useless, however, without the machine we had made. An arm without a brain." He thinks back to those long days within the computer-complex. "The machine we made was extraordinary. A computer-brain composed of miles of circuitry, entire warehouses of databanks." You could become lost inside of it, in fact, he often had been. "I had never seen anything like it."
"And the most frightening part of all.... is that it worked."

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
A Felicitous Dinner
"That... sounds like something Major Disaster was working on. She employed me for a week, my last employer before Professor Payne. She wanted to teleport into a version of the world with no other people, so she could walk into a bank for example, teleport back into the people-inhabited reality, steal all the gold, teleport with the gold into the deserted reality and walk home in the deserted reality where nobody existed to stop her. I don't think it worked. I turned up at his warehouse one day to find that the lights were on, he'd eaten there, changed into her costume and powered up the prototype. I think she used the prototype, but it didn't work properly. She didn't come back, and I waited a long while. Only trace of where she might have gone was that the cubicle she teleported from had filled with fine gravel." Felicity did change the gender of Major Disaster as she spoke, since whilst Major Disaster was a woman when she was in costume and causing havoc (and plotting to steal from banks using a private dimension), when she got home and took her costume off to live a normal life, she went by Dennis and lived as a man.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. [A Felicitous Dinner]
Val leans forward as Felicity speaks of her own experiences with similar technology. Jumping timelines in order to exploit parallel dimensions? The entire thing sounded eerily similar to some of the work undertaken by the Multidimensional Sciences Division of Conference Zeta. From what he could recall, their work had even produced results. "Fine gravel? Huh. Any idea what happened to the remains?" Just running a few tests on that likely would have produced some interesting results, at least. "Actually, do you have any idea what happened to that prototype in general?"
"Could make for an interesting acquisition!"

"Presumably went where the gravel came from." Which could be just about anywhere, without running a geological analysis on the gravel. Which Felicity lacked the resources or knowledge to do at the time, and she did not keep the gravel.
"I dismantled part of it and sold it, because I needed to pay the bills. I also moved out of my garret and into the warehouse to save money, and sold most of Major Disaster's gear. Some I kept, if I couldn't find a buyer or if I worked out how to use it. I sold the gravel to a building site. Once she disappeared, I stopped getting paid, and... Well, I needed to eat." And Felicity thought trying to use the teleportation device she suspected of killing her employer by teleporting them underground was a bad idea. "I've still got a laser gun built into an electric torch, a pair of long fall boots and most of Major Disaster's music collection. I don't use the laser much. I can't recharge it and I don't know how many shots it has left in it." A weapon of last resort, before she could dissuade attackers by using a lighter to set herself on fire.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Such a shame, the parts have gone - the gravel too! Valiance was momentarily deeply interested in the possibilities. "Ah, unfortunate." Best not to go deeper into detail, for now. "Teleportation devices, urk. Such an awful way to die!" Terrible side-effects, even. He briefly remembered a ghost story of sorts, told to him by his father, years ago. "You know the story of the USS Eldrige, by chance?"
"Reminds me a lot of what happened there. It really did happen, you know."

"One reason why I dismantled it before selling it. Didn't want anyone else to teleport somewhere they couldn't get out of. And why I didn't try to use it myself." Felicity shrugs and takes a spoonful of her soup, as she's still eating it. It's a meal provided by the pocket of someone else, she's going to finish hers even if Doctor Valiance doesn't finish his. Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
[A Felicitous Dinner]
Doctor Valiance continues to stir his soup. Could he get what's left to go? Hm, probably not. "Oh yeah, super freaky story!" He grins a little before playfully waggling his fingers. Oh, he had the best 'work' stories. "So, it all happened back in 1943." He rubs his hands against the table. "The world was at war once again. It was going well, but the Axis powers remained a force to contend with at sea." Well, more or less. "The Americans looked towards strange technologies in their attempts to regain naval dominance." Stranger still was yet to come. "Their top scientists were working on something codenamed 'The Philadelphia Project'. They were attempting to create a technology which would render American warships invisible!"
He takes a bite out of yet another piece of bread before continuing. "This was to be accomplished by, essentially, phasing the vessel in and out of observable reality." It sounded insane the first time he'd read through the Soviet files supplied to him on behalf of Con-Zeta. "You see, their science was based on Einstein's unified field theory, which explored the link between the fundamental forces of gravity and electromagnetism." It was all theoretical, at least, it had been. "They believed that they could manipulate this link - this 'unified field' - by installing a set of electrical generators within the hull of the USS Eldrige." There's a little nod here.
"The activation of such an extraordinarily potent concentration of electromagnetic energy was meant to bend light around the warship itself via the process of refraction, 'phasing' it out of sigh and rendering it invisible." Now for the good part, the part that made him squirm the first time he'd read it. "On October 28, they sought to test this technology within the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. At 9:05 in the evening, the order was received by Lieutenant C.R. Hamilton." Val leans forward at this point. "At 9:10, the generator-rig was activated. By 9:15, witnesses on land reported what they perceived to be an eerie blue-green glow emanating from within the USS Eldridge."
"Then, it disappeared." Doctor Valiance leans back in his seat now, hands in his lap. "At 9:33, the USS Eldridge reappeared within the Naval Shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia, clearly visible from atop the deck of the USS Andrew Furuseth. A five hour journey, seemingly made in minutes. Then, it disappeared again." He shakes his head and chuckles. "An hour later, it reappeared in Philadelphia, but it was... changed." That was a polite word for it. "It had become a tomb. Much of the crew had simply vanished, while others were found embedded within the metal structures of the ship, partially fused to the bulkhead itself - still alive - but only just."
"It was all real. I know this, because... well, decades later, the Soviets recreated the project."
"Well, the Conference did, rather."Last edited by Hattish Thing; 2020-06-17 at 05:07 PM.

Re: Bloodsong's Oasis: Restaurant and Speakeasy
A Felicitous Dinner
"How did the second version go? Better than the first, or not?" Hopefully Doctor Valiance knows the answer, because he's led up to it so well. Felicity is leaning forward with a great deal of interest, imagining people fused to the ship's metal hull or just missing. A lot of the science here goes over her head; her focus is on chemistry and biology, not physics or engineering, really. She can do stuff in physics or engineering, but generally only if it's focused around chemistry or biology. She knows enough to build- or at least bodge- the equipment necessary to make chemicals or start mucking about with genetics, though in either case it likely wouldn't be particularly safe or sturdy.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Doctor Valiance shrugs and enjoys another spoonful of soup. "Well, sort of. It's complicated." It wasn't that complicated, but it sounded cooler if he said it was. "You see, the Americans were looking for the wrong thing." Another bite of bread. "What they invented - or rather, had started to invent - was so much more than cloaking tech." And far scarier. "It was a kind of archaic teleportation device! Everything aboard that ship, including the crew, had temporarily discorporated. When the atoms within that space reincorporated, they had scrambled - hence the fusion of flesh and metal." A small shiver, for fun. "The Soviets went at it with proper context."
"It's actually what reminded me of your story, there."

"Really? I thought Major Disaster had swapped her position with that of the gravel, which is why the gravel had filled the machine and she was nowhere to be found. If some of the gravel was her remains, then... Maybe I should have buried it, rather than sell it to a builder to make concrete out of it." To be fair to them, Tina and Kirk had heard the story more than once.
"That'd would have been simply delicious, but I think that would have ruined their moment. They even had one of those lesbian babies apparently. The kid's a teenager by now I think." How this work with other timelines is unclear but that's just facts. "Time sure goes fast, huh? So glad I don't have to worry about it the same way as other people." My, this place certainly is full of miracles, isn't it? She has half a mind to ask how, but then again, the rules would probably be a fair bit different for her. "Folk like who, exactly?" Asks Cyrin, looking suddenly guarded. His own voice is quite deep, with a harsh edge to it that's belied by his delicate features. His accent is blunt, but there's a strange care and precision to his enunciation, and he speaks somewhat slowly, as if mimicing the speech and mannerisms of a scholar or aristocrat, despite lacking the same linguistic flair. The weak, the downtrodden, those judged without merit fer their judgement. Now it were made at first fer those unwelcome in their own country, and fer those afflicted with lycanthropy."
Atreyu shrugs and offers a weak open-mouthed smile, making no attempt at hiding his particularly pronounced canines.
"But when y'make a home like that fer some, over time it tends to attract more of those unwelcome without reason. Such as, say folk with some infernal heritage." He nods ever so slightly in Cyrin's direction. "Yer quite right, I ain't an elf, but I've been proud to call my place home to werewolf, tiefling, duskira, goblin, kenku, an' more. "It looks that way, unfortunately. Major Disaster wasn't one for keeping meticulous records of what she was up to, since that can corroborate other evidence should she have been arrested by NERD or something. So I don't have schematics for her gear, just what I could remember and was told. A few notebooks, but nothing really groundbreaking. Not like her teleporter or the lasergun torch." Maybe something Felicity could sell, except it's handwritten in code and Felicity doesn't know anyone else who could read them. And even then she's not got the best understanding of the code used herself, as she'd only worked for the supervillain a week.
"Yes, of course. Time to go home. When do I start work? Where should we meet?" Quite important information that Felicity hasn't been given yet, though we can probably ignore it and end here.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

She seems to have been paying more attention to the real conversation than she was letting on. "Like visiting my grampa." She smiles, sweetly, playing it off as a tease, but her foot is totally knocked back to kick him in the shin again. Does she wanna make a scene? Does Kirk know who Tina is? She lives that drama life. Has he ever known her to suffer in silence? My avatar was done by Gullara. Thanks again!
