    @inexorabletruth

Here's some of the module's info on the party's patron and immediate plot hook. I'd appreciate it if you could add it into the original post.

    Spoiler
    Show
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you and others to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."
The only other detail provided is that Gundren has two brothers, Tharden and Nundro. The dwarves pool their money together, but their skillset and background can be a little more varied, should your characters want other connections. Now, Gundren is no adventurer, but he's certainly a lively fellow that seeks his fortune and folly in equal measure. Mechanically, all three brothers are level 1, just like you.

I've updated the thread, and closed it to new interest.

I've been boiling up a pretty decent background for my oddly juxtaposed character that I really like. In fact, I kind of like the new concept of rolling up a character background. It forces you to think outside the box. I've never particularly liked playing elves, because their fluff just doesn't match my kind of roleplay, but this stretches my imagination, and I like it!

This sheet isn't complete yet, but most of what's missing is background and personality fluff.

Everything here checks out mechanically an looks good to go. I just have one recommendation.

There's a spell called Healing Word (Page 250) that I would highly recommend you make room for at first level. Currently, Tasha's Hideous Laughter and Dissonant Whispers have very similar effects, saving throws, and duration. I would recommend swapping out one of those for Healing Word.

I say this mostly because level 1, though short, is more brutal than other editions as far as player-character survival is concerned. Just one bit of healing to bring a dying player back into the fight can make the difference. There is no expectation for a player to be a dedicated healer, however, but it is nice to have this in your bard's bag of tricks.

I was debating between Healing Words and Cure Wounds, and then I need to decide on my fourth first-level spell. Other than that, the character is pretty much finished now.

Here is my character sheet. I think I got everything, but let me know if something needs to be fixed.

    https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1491090

Basically he's the 3rd born son to a noble house. Since he has two older brothers, he realizes that he has no chance to inherit a title or lands. Thus, he left his home and family to seek the life of an adventurer.

His ultimate goal would be to start his own noble house. Be it through reputation, alliances, and marriage..he'll prove that even though he's 3rd born, he's just as capable as anyone else.

Gundren is a business connection of Jergen's father. As Jergen was growing up, Gundrenwould tell him tales of his travels and such. Once Jergen set out on the path to adventure, Gundren offered him a job...

    Here is Bimpnotten Stumbleduck Scheppen.

The gist of her backstory is that when she was a child she wandered away from her magically hidden forest gnome village and into the back of human's traveling wagon. The wagon brought her to a major city where she had to live on the streets since she doesn't know how to find her home village. Gundren would visit the city for business and had taken to paying Bimpnotten Stumbleduck Scheppen gold for odd jobs when he's there.

To be honest I pretty much only took the Urchin background because I saw it came with a pet mouse, before that I was thinking either Folk Hero, Hermit, or Outlander. As a Forest Gnome I can even talk to the mouse.

Be aware that this party will have two fighters, the other intending eldritch knight. Two fighters are quite fine, just keep in mind your future plans for the character build.

Just two mechanical things to take care of.

Dexterity is added to damage rolls for ranged weapons in this edition, so your light crossbow damage is 1d8+1.

Your AC from Chain Mail (16), a shield (+2), and Defensive style (+1) should be a total of 19, not 18. Also, on your the entry for AC in your character sheet, I would like it to read, without quotes, "19 (M)," which will remind me that you have heavy armor master.

I personally would recommend, on such a heavily armored character, to take points from dexterity and put them into constitution. I tend to get more mileage out of that little extra health than I do with a slight bit of initiative and dexterity saves. This is, however, a personal preference, and I know one of my players loathed having a lower dex because of initiative. Take whichever you feel is more important.

    Spoiler: Lizard Lord

Just two things, otherwise looks good.

Your AC, if you are going with the starting leather armor, will be 14.

    Your initiative will be +3.

I am a little concerned to see no constitution bonus. Although the rogue gets a number of ways to avoid or reduce damage in the next few levels, you may find that you are not going to be able to take very much damage at all. If this is the stat distribution that you want, then I highly recommend staying out of melee range until you get the Cunning Action ability at level 2.

I also see that you invested in a very high intelligence; did you plan on Arcane Trickster later on?

    Mechanics question:

Am I allowed to sing my spells, or do I have to follow the letter of the rules and used a musical instrument as a focus for casting?

Also, all spells selected and character sheet officially complete.

This'll do just fine for bringing Jergen into the story. I don't need anything else.

That one goes up for debate in the community from time to time. Here's how I rule that:
    Spoiler: Voice as bard focus
    Show
The purpose of a bard requiring an instrument as a spell focus is to place two restrictions on them similar to most casters. The first is to discourage dual-wielding weapons, because the caster must have their focus in one hand. The second is to provide a physical item that, if knocked away or stolen or seized by guards in jail, will negatively affect the caster.

If you wish to have your voice act as your instrumental focus, I require that those two restrictions remain: you can be disarmed, and it requires one hand to use. The easiest way to do this is to have an magic item equivalent to a microphone, held in one hand and used to channel your voice to greater volumes or distances; a "sonorous scepter" if you will. Is this acceptable to you? I would count this item as one of the instruments in your starting gear.

I'll stick with an instrument then. Do I pick one instrument and the others can only be used for performing, but not for casting, or will any instrument do?
