Like I said in the recruitment, I'd like to know some world details before I make a backstory.

In that case I assume you leave the story up to me?

    In that case:

    Spoiler: Valis Draconis
    Show

The story begins in the small city state of Brugstad. Brugstad is home of the most important institute for higher learning on the continent - the University of Brugstad.
Not only is the university home of some of the most famous and ingenious thinkers of the day, but it fulfills a geo-strategic important function: It separates two rivaling countries.
To the West lies the Republic of Fren, to the East the Kingdom of Alem. 500 years ago, after a nasty war of succession the old kingdom separated into two nations – and since then a seemingly unending series of wars, skirmishes, raids, brawls and altercations have hardened the fronts – literally. From the inhospitable mountains in the north comes forth the Rena, a fast and dangerous river, flowing straight to the sea in the South. Along it’s shores both nations have erected numerous castles and strongholds, limiting their enemy’s ability to cross over one of the few remaining bridges.
And here Brugstad comes into play: The masters of the University, mages, priests and scholars had declared Brugstad as neutral territory even before the secession war. The city itself lies on a small island where the Rena meets the ocean. The island is connected to Fren and Alem by two mighty bridges. At the same time it boasts one of the few natural harbors along the rocky and dangerous coast, making Brugstad a very rich and influential city indeed. They secure there independent neutrality through a mercenary company called the Sturmbanner. The company employs some of the best fighters and strategists from around the world and was granted its own chair for warfare and tactics 100 years ago.
But there is a third bridge.
This one leads straight to the north along the river to the Valis Draconis. The Valis Draconis used to be a rich part of the river valley with deep lakes, fertile ground and above average temperature, making it a gourmet's dream with wine, fish, truffles etc.
Everything changed when one such gourmet showed eventually up:
The great dragon Thihammar declared it some 250 years ago as his personal territory. He leveled several castles, bastions and other fortifications on both sides of the river in a single day and erected a magical barrier, preventing prying eyes from scrying into the valley.
Ironically, this brutal slaughter secured a relatively stable peace between Fren and Alem as this valley had been a prime issue for contention between the two nations and also a strategic important position.

The dragon withstood all attempts to invade his valley, until very recently.

Sigurd Ransgarson, dwarf, senior member of the chair for dragon studies and seer published a paper predicting Thihammar’s death.
Only a few people took note of this ridiculous thesis.
It stopped being ridiculous when the scrying shield begun to waver and a few mages where able to glimpse into the valley.
It became interesting when a small party of adventurers managed to go into the valley and return not only with there lives but also a rather generous amount of gold.
Only a week later those lucky adventurers were found with cut throats in Brugstad’s harbour district.

Now tensions between Fren and Alem rise again, as they prepare to secure the valley and possibly win access to its archenemy's unsecured flank.

    The free Republic of Fren
Government: Elitist oligarchy/plutocracy composed of rich nobles and even richer traders.
Head of state: Sir Ian Fortescue, Halfling, mining baron, slave trader and owner of vast colonies in the west.
Economy: Strong trade bias, highly efficient banking system. Main export beside credit loans and fashion are cheaply produced goods from Frens many manufactures.
Notable features: Fren has a slight bias in it’s population composition towards elves, halflings and more recently bugbears from the colonies who are captured and bred as slaves. Fren has no draft service. Combat doctrine favors duels, and a strict enforcement of “honorable” combat, supplemented by a healthy dose of sabotage, diplomacy and misdirection beforehand - preferably by the hands of mercenaries.
Frenians are said to be hot blooded, hedonistic and enthusiastic.

    The Kingdom of Alem
    Government: Elective Monarchy
Head of state: King Ger the Great, Dragonborn, professional soldier and ex-member of the Sturmbanner.
Economy: Strong agricultural bias, still favoring hard coin currency. Main export besides livestock and grain are guild produced wares of high quality. The strong guild influence hampers Alems overall productivity, limiting sharply the quantity of produced goods.
Notable features: Alem is less urban then Fren and it's population favors slightly the more robust races as well as lizard folk. Recently there has been an influx of constructs. The newly rediscovered creation spells are considered a state secret, but Brugstad University is said to have a copy already.
King Ger expects to gain a considerable economic boost through the use of constructs, but the guilds resist his initiative as they fear a sharp decline of their influence.
Combat doctrine favors simple militia with divisions composed of whole communities, as well as a heavily armed and trained standing military.
Alemians are said to be cold, disciplined and conservative.

    The Valis Draconis
Government and Head of State: The Great Red Dragon Thihammar, sorcerer and connoisseur of rare treats.
Economy: Closed subsistence agrarian society with occasional smuggling and raids.
Notable features: Thihammar has a great host of Kobolds working for and serving him. They are mostly hunter/gatherers worshiping Thihammar as their deity.

On the continent there are mainly four tongues:
    - Frenish, a rather modern tongue with relatively simple grammar but with many words borrowed from other languages, used extensively in banking and economic discussions.
    - Old Alem, the complex and harsh sounding language of the old Kingdom, now mainly used in legal documents, scientific thesis and pretentious conversations.
    - High Alem, the slightly simpler but even more precise version of Old Alem, current standard wherever technical terms are discussed.
    - Ren, the common trade language, imported from the colonies and the big continent in the south, the de facto lingua franca.
    - Draconic, mainly spoken inside the valley now.

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Heart was found at the door to an orphanage in Brugstad, swaddled in simple white linens, with a note including her name and nothing more.

She was raised among the other orphans, but was always out and about. As soon as she could walk, she was moving around, often to the consternation of those running the orphanage. They attempted to settle her in with some families, but no one was able to handle her, and she always ended up back at the orphanage. When she was twelve, then, she overheard the owners of the orphanage talking about the "problem child," and was able to piece together from context clues that it was her. She was the problem child.

So, she ran away. Shortly, as she ran to the seedier and less well-known (to her, at least) part of Brugstad, she fell prey to a group of thugs. They figured they could use her innocence and small frame to help them pickpocket and steal.

Heart was forced to work for them for some three months, before a sting from the Brugstad guards found their hideout and got them. She was taken along with them, and sentenced to prison, initially. Due to everything happening in Old Alem, she had no idea what was going on, but was still rather scared, as is appropriate for a child being sentenced. Luckily for Heart, there was a merchant present-a kind dwarven man, who when he was mad aware of the sentencing of the thugs who had disrupted some of his shipments, decided to look into it. And when he saw poor, 12-year-old Heart being sentenced, he bribed the judge to release her into probation under his employ, rather than prison.

Now technically working for the dwarf, Orin Interis, Heart found a new home. While a strict taskmaster, Orin's a kind man. Heart worked hard for him, learning Frenish to help go over his documents, and traveling with him as a scribe. The probation was to last for three years, but in that time, Heart grew to view Orin as a father figure. So, when her probation was up, she signed up immediately to continue working for him.

Shortly thereafter, his bodyguard was crippled in an attack. (Unrelated to Orin-the bodyguard has a sordid past that caught up to him. Orin's a big believer in second chances.) Knowing that his work did sometimes lead him to dangerous places, Orin tried to find a new guard. But Heart took it upon herself to learn from his old bodyguard, so she could protect her dad.

Working as his scribe and bodyguard lasted for some six years. Heart's recently turned 21, and Orin has told her that he will be leaving the area. He's worried about tensions between Fren and Alem will disrupt his business, and quite possibly hurt some of his people, so he's ducking out before anyone gets hurt. Heart, while tempted to go with, knows of the innocents in Brugstad, all of whom stand to lose if Fren or Alem conquer the area. She thanked Orin for his years of help and care, but told him she would stay.
