    Ratfolk-Vershab nods and thinks for a moment. Looking up from his spellbook he says, "With different spells prepared I would be able to better empower several of you, including our new ally, but I currently lack the skill to repair golems. That said, it is a skill that can be learned. I am not deeply invested in the pursuit of such knowledge, but can see the value in it...

    Tactically speaking we should leave and then stealthily scout to see if the golem resets itself. Were I to come prepared and invisible, I could perhaps conjure first a pit to capture the golem, followed by an illusion to keep it in place. Without someone to direct it, the golem should be unable to pierce a simple illusion as long as the spell doesn't inspire it to react. Then, were we quiet and careful enough, it might be possible to remove the useful equipment from the room without alerting it to our subterfuge...

    Vershab can prepare and cast Create Pit and Silent Image, possibly in the next several minutes. By sneaking up, invisibly, and then casting the spell during a surprise round we can begin from a position of strength, were combat to be required.

    Alternatively, a well-crafted illusion of an appropriate scene could keep the golem occupied. Based on our previous fight with the sand golem and their general mindlessness, it cannot reason independently of something controlling it. Perhaps an illusion of an adamantine box, completely opaque, would work? I'm open to ideas.

    What I know is that Silent Image won't work to make an illusion of an empty room. Effectively making the entire party invisible is beyond the power of a 1st level spell.

    For an illusion to work the golem has to assume it is what it is without ever interacting with it. If the golem hears us then it is likely to try to escape and easily do so...

    Natala watched as the others discussed potential options to dealing with the golem. Her own abilities were somewhat limited when it came to affecting a construct effectively immune to magic, but perhaps there were ways to help. As they considered options, she asked aloud, "Is there a diplomatic approach to this? Constructs often have instructions built into their very being ... if someone were to take on the appearance of the architect ... or if our companion could speak on our behalf. Otherwise, what are the ways we could overcome the physical resistances of this creature? I remember the lantern archons had good success against previous constructs."

    Tetisurah indicates that she doesn't know any way to converse with the construct, and suspects it isn't possible. As for the idea of mimicking Chisisek's appearance, this seems impractical, in the absence of a likeness of the long-dead architect.

    Aware of these difficulties, the Relic Knights confer at length on possible ways to bypass the golem, eventually deciding to withdraw. Vershab prepares appropriate spells, and they return about an hour later.

    The golem has resumed its seemingly inert posture, a metallic, humanoid shape standing in the shadows close to the entrance of the treasure room.

    With a nervous glance to Vershab, the youngster nods. Knuckles turning white in the grip of his curved blades, he watches anxiously for the results of the arcanist's efforts.

    A moment later Vershab disappears from view and sneaks up to the open secret door. Once at the entrance he casts a Silent Image spell, conjuring the figment of a solid adamantium box completely surrounding the golem on all four sides-plus-ceiling. Then he waits to see how the construct reacts...

    The clockwork machine immediately reacts by attempting to punch through the imaginary box to escape, and succeeding. Vershab wonders - if this thing had a face, would it look puzzled with this turn of events? It's an academic question, since the contraption doesn't have anything like a face. Instead, it reestablishes the barricade in the door. After a few more minutes, it shifts back to humanoid shape and resumes its standby position.

    Invisible-Vershab looks disappointed underneath his magical protection, but escapes back to the others and reports the results in a clinical manner. "We must fight it, I'm afraid. I will begin with a pit to hinder it, followed by webbing and then summoning lantern archons to pierce its powerful armor. Does anyone have anything else to prepare before we begin?" he finishes, before listening and turning back to attempt the first spell before his invisibility fades...

    As soon as the first words of Vershab's incantation resonate across the chamber, the clockwork engine animates. A pit appears right under it, but it narrowly manages to clamber up the fast steepening slope and avoid a nasty fall.

    The cogs and gears spring into life, and the machine's arm-like extensions slam into Turi's chest, while a pincer reaches to restrain him. The contraption's mechanical power is incredible, catching his arm as in a vice.

    Vlarga wasn’t thrilled to be facing off against a mechanical man-wall. The whole thing seemed strange, but she had broken machines before - they just take a bit of extra oomf. She prepared by magically strengthening her muscles by calling on the font of power in her blood. When the plan went bad, and Turi started to get maimed, she strode into the room, entered her rage and applied some extra oomf to the problem with her falchion.

    Turi companions rush to his rescue! A suddenly enlarged gnoll, foaming at the mouth, positions herself well against this mechanical opponent, but her blow hits a heavy plate with little effect. Lehasti's falchion inserts itself between some gears and dislodges a few, but the metallic machine is extremely tough. Turi takes advantage of the greasy substance now covering him from head to toe, courtesy of Vershab, and slips away from the deadly pincers. Natala runs forward and calls the blessings of the ancient gods over the group...

    No longer paying attention to the young rogue, the golem turns on its latest attacker...

    Lehasti releases a breathy grunt of pain as the golem's pincer-like extension impacts and seizes her in its vice-like grip. With a wordless snarl through gritted teeth, the paladin sweeps her blade against the construct as best she can

    Meanwhile, a wave of relief ripples through Azkin's frame as his brother wriggles free. As his mentor takes Turi's place, a familiar resolve enters the young Sarenite's expression, and he gazes into the suddenly crowded fray before calling out a prayer to their shared deity...

    While Vershab begins casting, a large gecko runs up the wall right in front of him to turn the corner and get in position behind Lehasti. A glance from the arcanist confirms that Tetisurah no longer occupies the end of the corridor. Vlarga pounds in a massive blow, and Turi strikes any weaknesses he can see in the monstrous machinery, dislodging a metal plate. This allows Lehasti's spiked gauntlet an opening to tear a few small gears out.

    Extending her hand, Natala calls on the power of the Ancient Gods to heal Lehasti... And the golem finally falls to the bottom of Vershab's pit, taking the paladin down with it in a tremendous fracas of clanging metal.

    Turi hits twice and Vlarga once. Lehasti, being grappled, takes a -2 to attacks, but the Debilitating Strike from Turi fortunately lowered the golem's AC enough that it's still a hit. The DR cushions a lot of the blows, but the golem is now significantly damaged.

    Natala casts Cure Serious Wounds, healing Lehasti for (3d8+8)[13] hp.

    The golem maintains the grapple on Lehasti (+5 bonus as it's already grappling her) (1d20+34)[40]
    Regular grapple damage (2d10+8)[26] plus grind damage (2d10+12)[23]

    End of round, Refl save DC18 (1d20+6)[17], if failed, falling damage (4d6)[9] - fail. Both the Golem and Lehasti fall. The golem is protected by DR and takes no damage, as opposed to Lehasti.

    Lehasti received 13 hp of healing, but took a total of 49 58 damage. She's still grappled, and prone at the bottom of the pit.

    Turi gasps as Lehasti and the golem plummet to the bottom of the pit. For just a moment, he stands slack-jawed, afraid he's seen the last of his friend and ally among the land of the living. Dashing forward, he speaks a command word to conjure a small swarm of buzzing, winged insects from his chitinous armor. After only enough heartbeats to remain confident that Lehasti isn't already dead, he leaps into the pit. Undeniably unsure about his choice, he drifts slowly to the bottom of the pit, already lining up an attack with his blades.

    Azkin's jaw drops as the metallic monstrosity seems to finally lose its purchase on the slanted edges of the supernatural pit, its fall somehow both ponderous and startlingly fast, and the young cleric watches his mentor being bodily dragged alongside the golem. After a heartbeat of shock, he turns toward his brother and chokes out an almost inaudible prayer, resting a hand upon the older boy...

    Bravely, Turi jumps to the help of his beleaguered friend. In a desperate effort, Lehasti jumps to her feet. But neither of them manages to land a telling blow on the mindless machine of death.

    An archon appears above the pit, and obliges Vershab's request, while offering a dry comment in its native tongue.

    Mercilessly, the sharp appendages of the clockwork golem continue to hold Lehasti still, piercing her body in multiple places.
