Korlann can't help but smile slightly as he sees the other members of the company rally for an all-out assault on the giant, tearing the weapon from its grasp and assaulting its senses as well as its body. Stepping inwards towards the hulking brute, he plants one of his feet and draws back a hand, ki swirling around it. Speaking a single arcane word, as Three directed him to when they first found the odd amulet he now wears, the trident flashes as magic swirls in along with the blazing ki. Finally, he pushes forward with his other foot, putting his motion and weight behind a single mighty strike at the giant.

Three’s sensors registered the giant’s fall as a small earthquake, but she knew that would be too coincidental during a battle with one of Annam All-Father's children. She followed the cleric to the far side of the boulder and saw him standing tall between Kuros and the heavily injured Korlann Zehk, and noted with satisfaction as Dergosh and Akara rendered their enemy blind and unarmed. She reloaded her weapon and called out to the giant, still unsure of whether the thing can even understand her: “Now would be a good time to yield!”

The giant seemed to begin to understand that it was in serious trouble. Stumbling with glittering golden particles gleaming from every fold and orifice of its body, it felt a sudden thump as the Skarn’s blow struck true. Strange energy that coursed through its body … which it shrugged off, tightening ancient muscles and pawing at its eyes. It roared its rage, and flailed, unarmed, with fleshy fists the size of ox heads at Korlann.

Even with blood trickling from the wound in his side from the dire wolf, the Skarn slipped both of the wild punches without even breaking stance, body turning just so: it was Monkey Dances In The Clearing, the technique the masters had taught him for when fighting enemies larger than himself.

And when he sensed the energy in the moment was right, he counterattacked.

Another unarmed blow. His steel-strong fingertips dived into a particularly large and available semitendinosus that presented itself. The blow didn’t hurt the giant much, but no force on Faerun would keep the great monster from limping now.

The stunning fist doesn’t come off (it’s against Fort not Will unfortunately, the giant rolled 21 total) but the strike does hit and does damage nonetheless.

The giant uses a full round action to lash out unarmed at Korlann. Both of those miss … but attacking unarmed attracts an AoO from Korlann. Korlann hits with his AoO and does a further 9 damage. If Korlann had Combat Reflexes he would’ve got another from both the giant’s blows.

    Initiative Order:
    Dergosh: +10 – 24 (19/38)
    Akara: +8 - 13 (13/25)

    Three: +9 – 10 (16/19)

Korlann doesn't involve himself in the conversation between his allies, choosing instead to focus on the foe in front of him - and the fact that one slip on his part could prove fatal. The giant staggered, first under the sickening crunch of Kuros's hammer, and then Korlann's two blows with steel-edged hands, finding the kidneys and liver and rupturing them. It reeled, red flooding in from every side in its vision, blinded, stunned. It was dimly conscious of two presences: the wooden-thing starting to raise its crossbow, and a small, reptilian shadow rising on the rock next to it, silhouetted against Selune's face...

Ruk crept up the rock behind the giant, his painted red face rising into view like a dawn sun in the middle of the moonlit night. The giant didn't have a chance, but as long as it was standing it was still a threat.
The kobold mustered himself - and jumped. He landed on the great thing's thick neck, clambering to keep balance, grabbing onto what wiry hairs he could to not be bucked off.
He gaze landed on his wooden friend,
    "Three! Now!"
He reached around the giant's head, claws digging into its nostrils, and pulled with all his tiny might. Blood trickled between his fingers.
The giant shouted in surprise and pain, arching his head back, attempting to relieve the pressure on his nose.
A bolt whistled across the field and buried itself in the giant's exposed windpipe. A roar became a groan and then a gurgle, as blood filled his throat.
The great thing came teetering down, like an old felled tree. Korlann stepped to the side as the giant made his way to his final resting place.

The noise of the giant crashing to the ground echoed off the rocks and into the night. But just as suddenly as it the noise and the fight had begun, it was over, and all was quiet once more. The giant's Greatcleaver lay as motionless as its former owner, pointing northwest like a great iron finger.

The giant’s fall had also ruptured a filthy-looking, black, burlap sack it carried. Such things were common to the creatures; a hill giant would often pick up all manner of random items in its travels. It didn’t take a detailed inspection to see what had been contained there.

A small constellation of blue stars, gleaming in the moonlight, lay scattered a few feet away. Seven sapphires by the look of them.

Less inviting were the sack’s other contents. First, two small humanoid skulls – surely that of children, if they had been human, and likely still children of whatever people they had been. The skulls were visible half-falling out of a small casket of faded oak which had shattered in the giant’s ruin.

Last, a rectangle of stone, fallen from the sack, by the giant’s dead hand. The stone was a veined but beautiful cut: marble, perhaps not of much expense to adventurers who risked their lives for good returns, but one that would have cost a peasant or his family dearly. The stone had landed face-up, and bore an inscription. The language was Common, albeit the carvings had been done in a style not practised for decades.

The cleric nonchalantly side-stepped the giant as it crashed to the ground in slow motion, landing partially on the cleaver that Dergosh’s Gruumsh-magic had disarmed from him. He crouched over and pried up the giant’s arm where it rested on the blade, then casually slid the weapon over to Korlann with his foot.

Ignoring for now the rest of the items spilled from the giant’s pouch, the half-orc stood back up, dusted his hands together and began to look around. “Giant goblin…you think he have giant fireworks somewhere?” he asked to no one in particular, craning his neck around. His eyes settled on the corpse of the worg back amongst the rocks and he began to stomp over to the body with a look halfway between a grin and a glare, pulling his flensing knife from his belt as he went. Not my kill, but those big wolf teeth. Will find good use, he thought as he began the bloody work of removing the worg’s canines.

Dergosh had a look around the immediate vicinity in case the overlarge goblin had its own overlarge nest to be raided, but whether because of the hour or the habit of hill giants to wander over a large area, he couldn't see anywhere that looked much like the monster's haunt.

The job of flensing the wolf, at least, was relatively simple. It had fallen with both jaws accessible and he could easily get at the teeth. Not all of them were viable, of course; some had rotted away, others had been broken in the fight courtesy of Kuros breaking its skull in half, but he managed to come away with a decent-ish number given the task and the time he had to work with.

    Spoiler: OOC

Korlann nods approvingly as the giant falls, before allowing his stance to relax somewhat. His face contorts into a grimace, however, as the adrenaline fades from his system, replaced by the pain of the injuries that he had been mostly ignoring during the battle. His expression turns fierce, however, upon seeing the contents of the giant's sack - his gaze quickly passing over the gems, and settling upon the two child-sized skulls and the accompanying stone slab. Making his way over towards the slab, he reads the inscription, his thoughts seemingly confirmed. Kneeling, he places a palm on the slab, looking towards the two skulls. "Should it be possible, I will see that your remains, and this stone, are returned to whence they came - failing that, we can leave you in the care of one of the Earthmother's chosen. Either way, you will be allowed to rest in peace."

With a grimace, he stands before turning towards the others. "Three of Three, Akara, could the two of you gather those gems, and check to see if there is anything else on the giant's person which would be worth taking? Kuros, a hand with this?" He gestures as he speaks, first indicating the fallen gems, then the slab. "Ruk, would you be willing to wrap those - carefully? I want to see them returned to their proper resting place, if possible - failing that, we will reach out to Jhod to have them lain to rest once more under the Earthmother's blessing."

    Complication Pool: 2 of 6

While the others collected and dealt with all the objects of interest, Kuros set about skinning the dire wolf's corpse, knife gleaming silver in the moonlight but quickly bathed in the red of the dirty task. Even allowing for the fact Dergosh had already started the process by taking off the beast's skull for its teeth, the dire wolf was nine feet long and weighed a good eight hundred pounds when living; it took him a good hour to finally free what was pretty well a nine foot by four foot furskin laid out in a square. Even if he didn't have the time or really the setup to start cleaning the immense, blanket-sized pelt, much less dry it off, the rich black fur was thick and would serve as a cushion between Kuros's skin and the ground.

That said, if he didn't get on with properly curing the beast soon, the pelt would stink worse than a nestful of rotten eggs come high noon tomorrow. As if to punctuate the thought, a large bird's shape gracefully passed over the moon, and then landed on the boulder the giant had been on. The vulture took up its patient watch with a waddle of settling feathers and legs, eyeing the corpses hungrily.

Kuros then turned his attention to the wolf corpse itself. By this point even he was starting to blink more heavily, the day's adrenalin finally draining out of him, but he pushed himself on and managed to salvage enough meat and muscle from the creature to at least tend to his own supper. The moon was setting by the time he'd finished and in full darkness he didn't quite trust himself enough to cut portions that weren't offal or otherwise contaminated.

As it was, most of the Company had turned in for the night by the time he stood again with enough meat to make a meal of it. Dergosh was already snoring loudly and Three had already settled down to the night's watch. They'd used the Healing Belt, but Korlann was still somewhat bruised and battered, and the young monk still twitched in his sleep, waiting for the dawn and presumably some further help from Dergosh. So the big man took his dinner by the fire, and then sprawled out on the wolf pelt blanket, giving himself up to sleep.

Kuros forages enough to make a meal for himself, so he doesn't have to use up a trail ration.
As said, the wolf pelt at least stretches out to a 9x4 blanket. However, it's not cleaned or treated (you don't have any big supplies of water around) so it's still dirty on the back and as said it's going to smell pretty bad soon if it doesn't get all that blood rinsed off it.
Everything else goes in the wagon and everyone settles in for the night right here.

We're going to advance to morning with my next post, so get your last thoughts in for the night if any. I otherwise assume the following healing was applied to the following people:

Three: Back at full power after Repair Light Wounds. Also recovers infusions?
Akara: (2d8)[10] hitpoints back after charge from Healing Belt. That leaves Akara at full hitpoints.
Korlann: (2d8)[7] hitpoints back after charge from Healing Belt. Assume 4 more hitpoints recovered overnight and 1 point from Dergosh's last spell, and that's a total of 24/34 tomorrow morning.

I've also started adding the Complication Pool to actual posts, just so you guys have a sense of when things might start going wrong again. This doesn't mean the pool necessarily is always going to be rolled when it reaches 6 - if someone does something particularly dangerous, the pool might get rolled at that point too!

Three began the process of reloading her crossbow before the giant had even hit the ground - these lands are dangerous, and it wouldn’t do to be unprepared if something else ambushed the Company in its weakened state. She responded to Dergosh’s idle explanation as she worked the bolt into place, “I imagine he’d have thrown the big fireworks instead of the boulders. Explosives would have been a strong opening strike - he’d have hurt more than just me, perhaps even immobilizing the wagon.”

Bringing her attention back to the battlefield, she found her vision drawn first to the scattered jewels. But the small skulls caught her attention almost immediately afterwards. She did not know how the giant had those or why he carried them around with him, and to be perfectly frank, she did not care to speculate. She simply shook her head sadly and muttered out an infusion to repair the last of her damage as Korlann Zehk took charge of the situation. Three followed his direction and inspected the giant’s corpse for any remaining items of note.

After, Three cast another infusion - the last of her stronger ones, at least until she rests for the night - this one bringing into existence an invisible little helper to continue work on a project of the monk’s. He wanted these… little star-shaped weapons to throw at opponents. She didn’t think that they would have been so much trouble, but she could never get the damnable things to set properly. The ends always came out so brittle as to be useless. Perhaps a fresh set of hands would have an easier time of it?

Three casts [roll]Repair Light Damage[/i] (Eberron Campaign Setting, 114) on herself, pushing herself to max regardless of the roll.
She has 1 level 1 infusion remaining.

Three searches the Giant’s body: (1d20+3)[22].
    +3 from her Intelligence modifier.

Three casts the Unseen Crafter infusion (Races of Eberron, 191). It lasts for four days or until the crafting is completed, whichever event comes first.
She has 0 level 2 infusions remaining.

The Unseen Crafter attempts to craft Shuriken.
Shuriken come in groups of 5. They cost 1 gold. Because of the low cost, Three will be attempting to craft these in one day instead of one week, so for the purposes of this attempt they have a cost of 100 copper.
Shuriken are exotic thrown weapons, and so have a DC of 18. If Three rolls lower than 14, all crafting materials are lost. If her check is more than 13 or less than 18, she makes no progress today. On an 18 or higher, Three multiples her result by the DC, so the minimum copper piece value she can roll is 324. So, so long as she rolls an 18 or higher, she makes the weapons.
It should cost one-third of the base value in materials to attempt, so Korlann is down an additional three silver and four copper.
    (1d20+5)[14]
+2 from her ranks in Craft (Weapons), +3 from her Intelligence modifier, she has artisan tools and provides them to her Unseen Crafter until the end of the spell.
It costs three silver and four copper, and requires an 18 or higher to perform.

@Blues: This is Three’s third attempt to create these things. I don’t mind doing it, but the cost so far is 1 gold and 2 copper. For reference, it only costs 1 gold for five of them through a merchant. I know that individual gold pieces aren’t really that important when we’re running around with hundreds on our person and thousands in sell-able loot, but I figure I’d bring up the cost anyway as a heads up.

The night had passed without incident, albeit Three's luck hadn't been great - once more she had failed to craft a decently-balanced throwing star, and the giant's body had not held any more items of interest despite her careful and thorough search.

At least the sun was up and it looked to be a clear, warm day. They'd be able to navigate easily enough, given the Old Sycamore's massive shape was still visible halfway to the horizon. Eight good hours they'd slept, and nothing had seemed game to come and interfere with the Company's rest. Although about ten or fifteen vultures had assembled on various rocks and boulders around them, waiting patiently on an opportunity at the corpses the Company had slept by last night. The stink was already getting bad, even at this early hours, and flies were clouding on the dire wolf's corpse like disgusting black clouds. Kuros had been woken up by the damn things flitting on and off his face, as was to be expected from sleeping on quite literally a blood-soaked pelt for a night. Even Ser Pig was sleeping on the far side of the camp, away from his customary position as close as he could get to the mules' feed bags to raid them at an opportune moment.

So folks, daily use items are recharged and spell slots are available; spell selections will be needed and so on. Korlann is still at about 24/34 hitpoints. Assuming you're heading for the Sootscale Caverns now, so, choose your spells or do whatever, and we'll get going.

As the sun sent its morning rays through the gap between several of the large boulders surrounding their makeshift camp, Dergosh rose to perform his morning ablutions, scooping up handfuls pebbles and rocks and dusting himself with them. There were air baths and steam baths in addition to traditional water baths, but Gruumsh’s priests preferred their rock baths when possible. He then tended to Pig, patting the bristly swine and sharing one of his dried rations with him.

He stood contemplating the spells the One-Ear might grant him today, wondering if it was even necessary if all they planned to do was visit the lowly kobolds, when he saw Korlann moving around the camp looking worse for the wear. Grabbing the healing belt out of the back of the wagon, the half-orc slung it over his head and shoulder like a bandolier.

“Warrior Korlann, Hero of the Clan must look properly menacing when crushing life from weakling kobolds. Hold still,” he commanded, popping the man with another charge from the device.

Korlann stops in his morning practice as Dergosh approaches, lowering his arms after having just repeated the motions for his stunning blow once again - without the infusion of ki to empower it - and smiles slightly to himself as the orc uses the belt to further heal his wounds. "Thank you, my friend," he says as the magic washes over him. "Though if all goes well, we won't need to crush the life out of any kobolds, it is still good to be prepared just in case. That being said," he pauses for a moment, turning back towards his practice, "I'll be finished with my own preparations in but a moment."

Assuming his stance once more, he holds his arms out before him, focusing a bit - and as he does, the azure radiance of the ephemeral bracers on his forearms seems to fade slightly, while wisps of sapphire light flit around his fists, dancing there almost encouragingly. Nodding, he repeats his stunning strike motion a few more times, before nodding to himself in satisfaction. "Yes," he says, more to himself than anyone, "that should do nicely."

With that healing, Korlann is at 29/34, and should be fine with no further healing for the moment. Reinvesting essentia for the day, moving my one point from my Bluesteel Bracers soulmeld to my Sapphire Fist feat - I lose 1 point of damage overall, but get +1 damage and +1 DC on Stunning Fist attempts (would this apply to Pharaoh's Fist as well, BTW, since that's effectively an AoE Stunning Fist?).

the mornings exercises complete, the company looks up to see their camp surrounded by a flock of vultures. with a conspiratorial glance to her companions, hands subtly shift to weapons, crossbows, javelin. smirking to herself at the thought first drawing a picture on the ground for Dergosh, to understand what to do.

the birds explode into frenzied flight, and the company explodes into violence. with a final thought that if she should be successful with her 'new' crossbow, that maybe the bird would be cooked as well as slain, she takes quick aim, and let's fly a single bolt.

Three’s watch was as uneventful as it was unproductive - it seems Korlann’s little stars were too much for even her invisible assistant. Well, at least her infusions were restored. Three retrieved her tools and gave orders for the Unseen Crafter to remain as close to her as it could manage, so as to not accidentally end the magic early. Then she spent the earliest parts of the day tending to Mule One and Two, but kept the items that the Company had claimed from the giant in mind. They still needed to be inspected, appraised, and split between the Company or placed into the wagon for safekeeping.

But Akara’s subtle body language caught Three’s attention, and while she didn’t know why the woman wanted to attack the scavengers, she wasn’t exactly going to refuse to do so. Perhaps Akara noticed something odd and the vultures weren’t what they seemed? Perhaps she just wanted to get some target practice in? It didn’t much matter: Three’s crossbow launched a bolt just after Akara’s did, and launched two more in the moments after, all aimed to knock the birds out of the sky. After the brief hunting session, Three helped retrieve the bodies, if any.

    --

Three began her inspection of the giant’s weapon. She ran her fingers along the edges and focused most of her attention on determining what, if any, magical effects were gracing this cleaver. She assumed it definitely had something, else it would have seen some amount of wear from the giant.
